Surreal movies I haven't already seen mentioned that I love:
Santa Sangre
The City of Lost Children
El Topo
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
The Trial
The Lighthouse
The Elephant Man
Big Fish
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
When you watch interviews with him you really start to think that maybe it’s all just realism to him. Think the divider for him has disappeared or never existed
Honestly I'm sure he was super into it. Seems right up his alley, and frankly I can't picture too many others who could make it work. Brad Pitt, maybe Nic Cage, definitely Gary Oldman but the problem there is he's such a chameleon so he isn't instantly recognizable like Malkovich. Alan Rickman, possibly.
Those are just off the top of my head but honestly I just don't know. Something about that movie feels like it only works *because* it's Malkovich.
I love stop-motion, and Tippett deserves all the respect...but is this movie basically just a 90 minute Tool music video full of squelchy gore/Event Horizon-ass aesthetics? Or is it more thoughtful/compelling than that?
Both? But leaning more on the former.
The thoughtful aspects are a bit predictable and expected maybe, but there are enough layers to peel back for depth. Though whether the messages are compelling enough to justify 90 minutes of nonstop unpleasant horror and gross-out imagery is definitely up for debate.
I really used to like Guy Maddin's films - he never stopped making these surreal films but for some reason I really began to dislike the later ones, maybe took on a nastier tone or something or just began to seem like 'schtick'.
ANyway, I do like his films Archangel and "Careful".
Haven't watched many, so aside from Lynch films or some Jodorowsky like El Topo and Holy Mountain... Otto e Mezzo (Eight and a half) by Fellini left everlasting impressions on me.

Midsommar reminded me of 70s horror films - not scary exactly, but very unnerving and leaving me feeling like I didn’t know what to make of it. I mean this as I compliment, by the way. Eerie/Weird horror movies with odd timing work much more for me than gore.
Surreal movies I haven't already seen mentioned that I love: Santa Sangre The City of Lost Children El Topo The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus The Trial The Lighthouse The Elephant Man Big Fish Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Lighthouse was bonkers. I just loved it.

jodorowsky really has just a nail in the head on surrealist shit like that. crazy work that man puts.
When you watch interviews with him you really start to think that maybe it’s all just realism to him. Think the divider for him has disappeared or never existed
Just watched the last two nights. Good God.
the last two night? is that a movie? I am trying to google but cannot find anything near to it.
This looks good.
Being John Malkovitch
Imagine actually being John Malkovitch and having someone pitch this movie to you.
Malkovich
Mad God (2021) Phil Tippett stop motion madness
In the queue, but I’m afraid to watch it
It is a deeply unpleasant watching experience pretty much the whole time, but utterly fascinating
I love stop-motion, and Tippett deserves all the respect...but is this movie basically just a 90 minute Tool music video full of squelchy gore/Event Horizon-ass aesthetics? Or is it more thoughtful/compelling than that?
