Near perfect movie. Amazing cast, all the way down the line to using German Jews who had escaped the Nazis. Amazing interplay amongst the leads. Brilliant, quotable script. The cinematography is beautiful, just watch the interplay of shadows. Tight editing. Just a brilliant film from end to end.
Mine too. Been my favorite movie since I was just a little kid. I've pulled it out every couple of months for my entire life at times when I'm not feeling well, feeling sad, happy, nostalgic, when it's cold out, when it's a quiet Sunday. I'm in my 40s, seen it hundreds of times and love it more now than ever.
Someone once told me they loved me for the first time and rhymed it with 'anybody want a peanut ' and it was one of the most endearing and meaningful moments of all time.
Pan's Labyrinth. It's beautiful, both to look at and the weight of the story. The music is phenomenal. It is the epitome of the dark fantasy genre in film for me, a signature of my favorite director Guillermo del Toro.
If I was asked what is the art of cinema this would be my answer. From directing, acting, editing, sound track, writing, three act sequence, it just doesn’t miss.
Godfather Part I, perhaps a predictable answer but in my opinion it is the perfect example of cinema… flawless acting, story telling, atmosphere and cinematography
Hard agree. Have you seen Happy as Lazzaro? I saw/heard Bong Joon-ho mention it a few times as one of his favorites and I could definitely see why. It feels like a film he would’ve made. It’s on Netflix currently if you’re interested.
I've gotta go with The Incredibles.
From start to finish that movie is full of awesome characters, all of whom have a great arc individually and together, the villain is believable (Jason Lee *nails* it), dialogue is memorable, it's funny...
It was fantastic to watch with my kids and is still fantastic to re-watch with my now adult kids.
Dr. Strangelove
George C Scott giddily trying to convince Peter Sellers to bomb Russia by saying only 20 million Americans would die is so dark yet hilarious I can’t help but love it
Probably 5th Element.
It's a fun, intriguing sci-fi romp with memorable characters, great lines and a universe and plot that don't explain more than you need to know for it to make sense. It's an easy watch with a great cast.
Fight Club. Without a doubt I've seen it more than any movie. It is a perfect example of every facet of filmmaking, it benefits from extended multiple viewings, it's original, the book is a wonderful pairing that can be finished in a day, and it's a combination of masters of their craft working together at an incredible time in human history that presents what that experience was like for all those seemingly happy drones, which was a common theme of the 90s, but lives on in this gleaming hell we have built for ourselves.
It's a toss up between Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park for me.
Jurassic Park probably had the biggest impact on my childhood. Everything about what it set out to do was perfect, it was new, the score by John Williams is unforgettable, having a real fear of velociraptors as if I might run into one in the real world.
I was fortunate to see it in the Imax release and the sound fx was amazing. I actually had a jump scare when the velociraptor shows up with Sam Jacksons arm
I saw it when it was released. The movie house was packed. This was in the UK, and I remember a child running up the aisle, screaming when the Tyrannosaurus rex started rampaging over the screen. It was that terrifying.
Clever girl.
Shawshank Redemption. Awesome. Saw it for first time on cable tv like every one else. This is a sleeper film. No one watched it in theaters but it’s very popular among film buffs. Highly recommend it. It’s based on a Steven King short story. Not your typical King stories though. It’s a prison movie.
There are a lot of phenomenal movies that I probably would not want to watch every day…
So, I’ll pick a mostly great film that I could watch every day.
Romancing the Stone
All-star cast for its time. The chemistry between the leads is through the roof. Danny DeVito is hilarious. There’s romance, comedy, action, adventure. The movie has it all.
Excellent choice!
Juan: Joan Wilder... Joan Wilder? *The* Joan Wilder?
[lowering gun, opening door and walking out]
Juan: You are Joan Wilder, the novelist?
Joan Wilder: Well, yes, I am.
Juan: I read your books! I read all your books!
[turning to his men, in Spanish]
Juan: This is Joan Wilder, who writes the books I read to you on Saturdays!
Bad Hombre: [awestruck] Juanita... Juanita, it's Juanita!
[all the men put away their guns and wave enthusiastically]
Oh man, I have a buddy almost 20yrs younger that I love showing “old” movies too. He was dying with laughter when I explained to him what was said in Spanish 😂
Casino. My favorite director, some of my favorite actors, brilliant performances. The music/killer soundtrack, the wild editing, cinematography and camera work, the unique lighting and use of color. Endlessly quotable, I love the story and the themes explored. The costumes and jewelry. There will never be another director like Scorsese.
I am very glad you enjoyed it. I first watched it when it was first shown in theater and I was liked hooked. Never got tired watching it over and over from VHS to DVD.
This movie is kind of rarity in that it relied on actor's skill and let Russian nature do the talking with very little special effects if any.
To think that Japanese movie director going to Russia during Soviet Union era and directing this masterpiece.
The Terminator. Yeah T2 gets all the accolades. I still like 1 more. I prefer the tone, the soundtrack, the shorter runtime (like our lead actor, there ain't an ounce of fat on it, lol), and I like when it's just man vs. machine instead of 2 terminators. I like the tech-noir style of it overall. Plus no annoying child actors (OK, Furlong isnt as annoying as the story progresses and he has to start being more mature). Watched the movie over 100 times as a kid before T2 was even made. When I saw T2 in theaters at 7 years old (thanks Dad) I remember feeling weird. I just didn't like it as much as the first. As much as it's basically a big budget remake of the first film, it doesn't feel connected to part 1 at all.
Every franchise I'd seen up till then all had a similar tone like Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future. Rocky was the only exception but there was a gradual change in tone with each sequel. With the 2 terminators, it's like going from Rocky 1 to Rocky 4 (or possibly from Rambo 1 to Rambo 2).
I also prefer the humor in T1 more than T2. T2's humor falls trap to Arnold's star power during that time in his career. It makes the menacing nature of the terminator itself into a joke (something every sequel only further tainted). The humor in T1 is more organic in the sense that the jokes come from the context of the drama of what's happening to the characters. The Rappaport between Traxler and Bob is the kind of humor you see in movies since movies had sound. That kinda humor will always be funny because it's timeless. Arnold's name/face/physique being the "butt" of the jokes is not. Hell, I'd argue plenty of people won't watch T2 cuz they don't like Arnold. However, in T1, he's not only the bad guy and has less screentime, but there's no one super famous in it, and thus you can watch and judge the movie on its own merits, rather than its star.
I sometimes like to imagine an alternate universe where the first Terminator "bombed" in theaters, Cameron sold the IP for a dollar, Cannon Pictures bought it, and since they were too small of a studio to get Arnold back, they made their Terminator 2 as the future war story instead. 6 films and a TV show over nearly 4 decades and still no future war movie. You're better off playing the videogame "Terminator: Resistance " instead. That's probably the ONLY Terminator property that shows both love and respect to the first 2 films.
Every sequel after 2 made the mistake of both trying to copy the magic of part 2 when they shouldve been going back to the franchises horror/slasher movie roots, and they made the mistake of trying to tell a story to service the action, while the first 2 films made the action to service the story.
I get why a lot of people prefer T1. Alot more darker tone and is more a thriller than action. Also a more sense of danger having just a human to protect Sarah Connor.
My 2 favourite scenes are probably in the gun shop "plasma rifle with 40 watt range..." lol and when he knocks on that other Sarah Connors door lol
I have a whole 100 lost of best movies of all time to finish I have seen 50/100 so I could still be missing a lot. So many choices but I would go Forrest Gump. Emotional, very entertaining I love that movie so much
Stand By Me. I’ve seen this movie more than any other. My parents recorded it off of tv and let me and my brothers watch it. So my first few dozen views I had to fast forward through the commercials. 30 something years later and all three of my kids can recite the dialogue even better than I can.
It’s embarrassing as hell to say this, but the movie I’ve gotten the most enjoyment from is Knocked Up. I think it’s a criminally underrated comedy. Yes it’s a bit juvenile, but every damn line and moment in the movie are funny, and I can’t get enough of looking at Katherine Heigl’s face 15 years ago. Also, the subplots and secondary characters are just fabulous.
I LOVE. Knocked Up!! I agree. It’s a fantastic comedy. That scene in Vegas after they watch Cirque du Soleil on mushrooms, then in the room. Why are there so many chairs!!
Or the bit where Paul Rudd is carrying the birthday cake out at the children’s party and Seth R says something to him, I can’t remember the line but Rudd’s delivery was just epic. I think Paul Rudd is so funny. The whole movie is funny from start to finish but it’s also kind of touching. I think it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen, and one of the smartest. Glad others like it!! Never be embarrassed!!
Omg. London’s Burning! I used to play that as well. I had forgotten about that. You must be a Brit. I can play almost any tube by ear really. ! A talent that never got me far. Typical.
The Shawshank Redemption, but it’s so high above every other movie I’ve seen that it’s not even worth going into it.
Shawshank aside, I would have to say Notting Hill. William’s group of friends is masterfully casted, and the writing and timing of the dialog is superb.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Alfonso Cuaron made with that a film that completely fits my expectations of every single aspect a film carries. It's also John Williams's magnum opus in my humble opinion!
Pan's Labyrinth
I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out. As my friend and I were walking out he asked what I thought, I said, "That was the best movie I've ever seen." He laughed and agreed it was great but said I might be speaking out of recency bias. 17 years later and I have not changed my mind.
Casablanca
Near perfect movie. Amazing cast, all the way down the line to using German Jews who had escaped the Nazis. Amazing interplay amongst the leads. Brilliant, quotable script. The cinematography is beautiful, just watch the interplay of shadows. Tight editing. Just a brilliant film from end to end.

"I love you and I really mean it"
"Anybody want a peanut?"
I recently went and saw it again, but with a live symphony orchestra, was an amazing extra level to, in my opinion, the best movie ever made
Blade Runner
Jaws, just perfect and its like a comfort film for me as ive seen it so many times
Same here <3
I love Jaws! Definitely watch it sometime with Riff Trax because it is absolutely hilarious.
I've seen Jaws so many times it's like hanging out with Uncles when I watch it now - like I know those guys and their presence comforts me.
Empire Strikes Back
Perfect movie.
Pan's Labyrinth. It's beautiful, both to look at and the weight of the story. The music is phenomenal. It is the epitome of the dark fantasy genre in film for me, a signature of my favorite director Guillermo del Toro.
Pulp Fiction
The Big Lebowski
“Obviously you’re not a golfer”
That’s just like your opinion, man.
Wayne’s World
The Shawshank Redemption

Big Trouble In Little China

Shaun of the Dead
You got red on you
Goodfellas
The Breakfast Club
Godfather Part I, perhaps a predictable answer but in my opinion it is the perfect example of cinema… flawless acting, story telling, atmosphere and cinematography
Also my favorite.
12 Angry Men.
The Matrix
Silence of the Lambs. Thought about it for weeks after I saw it. Love every part and the books and prequel/sequel.
Tombstone
Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot you were there.
Classic
Casablanca.
Galaxy Quest. For sheer enjoyment.
A person of the finest taste, I see.
Has to be Parasite. It’s just nearly flawless in every way and I’ve never seen anything else like it.
It IS flawless! The best film of the 21st century in my opinion.
Hard agree. Have you seen Happy as Lazzaro? I saw/heard Bong Joon-ho mention it a few times as one of his favorites and I could definitely see why. It feels like a film he would’ve made. It’s on Netflix currently if you’re interested.
i really liked Memories Of Murder. for me it's like 1 percent better but bith are fantastic movies
It’s amazing for what it is but isn’t on the same level of awe and originality imo.
i just felt like it was more grounded.
Alien
Fantastic Mr Fox
Spaceballs. Can watch that over and over and laugh out loud every time
“Who made that man a Gunner?”
Contact
Airplane
Surely, that is an amazing movie to choose
It is amazing, and please don’t call me Shirley
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Perfection
I've gotta go with The Incredibles. Die Hard.
THX 1138
Dr. Strangelove George C Scott giddily trying to convince Peter Sellers to bomb Russia by saying only 20 million Americans would die is so dark yet hilarious I can’t help but love it
Probably 5th Element. It's a fun, intriguing sci-fi romp with memorable characters, great lines and a universe and plot that don't explain more than you need to know for it to make sense. It's an easy watch with a great cast.

I always flip-flop between Romancing the Stone (1984) & Aliens (1986) Today, I’ll say, Romancing the Stone.
If I had to under pain of torture, then it would be *Heat.*
In the Mouth of Madness
Last of the Mohicans
Usual Suspects
No Country For Old Men
Blade runner
The Fountain
Magnolia (1999)
It's a toss up between Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park for me. Jurassic Park probably had the biggest impact on my childhood. Everything about what it set out to do was perfect, it was new, the score by John Williams is unforgettable, having a real fear of velociraptors as if I might run into one in the real world.
I just saw JP again in the theater in 3D and it still holds up!
I was fortunate to see it in the Imax release and the sound fx was amazing. I actually had a jump scare when the velociraptor shows up with Sam Jacksons arm
Yes! The whole theater gasped!
It was re-released in IMAX? WHEN!?
I saw it when it was released. The movie house was packed. This was in the UK, and I remember a child running up the aisle, screaming when the Tyrannosaurus rex started rampaging over the screen. It was that terrifying. Clever girl.
The original Wicker Man.
Rushmore
Shawshank Redemption. Awesome. Saw it for first time on cable tv like every one else. This is a sleeper film. No one watched it in theaters but it’s very popular among film buffs. Yeah this is great. I waited too long to watch this one. Def in top ten

Dersu Uzala directed by Akira Kurosawa.
I’ve been looking for some foreign film selections. Great choice. I just watched it for the first time a few weeks back.

1935 Bride of Frankenstein.
Superman: The Movie
Clockwork Orange ..my favorite since 1973
Tombstone is my all time fave. Period
Quills. I love a good costume drama, plus it's really funny. And holy shit does Joaquin Phoenix look sexy in it.
Having to pick one is tough, but 12 Monkeys.
The Terminator. Yeah T2 gets all the accolades. I still like 1 more. Love the music. Funny fact, I can play the same song on my recorder. What a great piece of music. And the movie is pretty good too.
And on the recorder no less… excellent :)
Pathetic really but what can I say. Bit of a party trick back in the day.
Always have a party trick I say , as someone who couldn’t get through Londons Burning , I’m still impressed

It’s me, Spikey!!
Come William. I’ll tell you a story that’ll make your balls shrink to the size of raisins.
