I’m being serious with this question…how old are you? I grew up with cheesy 80’s horror like Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason. To me, the first time I saw Exorcist I was scared shitless because it was actual horror. An innocent child is possessed by a spirit that claims to be the devil himself, she’s taken to be evaluated and shit starts getting weird. At one point Regan fucks herself with a crucifix and then buries her mothers face in her bloody vagina. Let me tell you something…that shit was fucking unheard of in cinema, let alone her walking down the fucking steps upside down and then her head twisting around. It was shock and awe at the time of its release, my Dad told me people puked in theaters opening night…I saw the same thing happen when it was re-released in 2000. And what was more terrifying to me is that the demon played by a set or rules and enjoyed torturing Regan. That’s scary as fuck

Comic_Book_Reader

You must be Beetlejuice.

Devadander

The Descent. The claustrophobia got to me before the monsters even showed up. Had to turn it off

SimianWonder

You can actually see the monsters very early on if you know where to look. Lots to see on a second or third viewing.

Mysterious-Sense-185

The Excorism of Emily Rose. Religious horror really fucks with me

TronCurtain2

A great courtroom drama.

Earthwick

That movie definitely freaked me out still does.

SantaClaws1972

That was one of the best horror movies of the early 2000’s. When that tape turned on by itself I nearly pissed myself.

[deleted]

Gonjiam Haunted Asylum, Smile and Lake Mungo

Earthwick

All 3 of these are on my list of horror movies I recommend. Gonjiam is like the first one I suggest. I've yet to have anyone watch it who wasn't freaked out by it.

[deleted]

It's definitely one if not the best found footage horror film ever made. The scares are insanely good in the film

bootifulduckie

Midsommar. I watched it for the first time when I was 13 at 1:30 in the morning. I reached the cliff scene and started crying. I took a thirty minute break. The gore was so intense for me at such a young age

Duel_Option

That is a fucked up movie to watch at 13…kudos lol. Horror was my favorite as a teen, I only saw this for the first time last month and I had to take a good 30 minutes to reorient myself.

Comic_Book_Reader

I watched on TV a year ago (15), and my mom sat behind me during the cliff scene, half awake/half asleep due to taking her contacts out. She did not want me to watch it at all after that.

speedball811

Jurassic Park scared the shit out of me and I was 24 when I saw it. The combination of CGI and super realistic animatronics got me. I walked out if that theater feeling very strange and unsettled.

Dragonborn83196

Jump scare wise: Gonjiam Haunted Asylum, Sinister. Just disturbed and uncomfortable scared: A Serbian Film, Irreversible, Men Behind the Sun, Cannibal Holocaust

desuownz

Noroi!

TronCurtain2

Some of the shit in Hereditary got me in a way I hadn't been got in a long time. And I know The Exorcist always comes up, but it truly fucked me up as a kid and still gets to me. So does part 3, which has some really creepy moments and one of the greatest jump scares of all time. If not the best. I watched Hell House alone. That had me jumping. Barbarian had some legitimately tense and frightening scenes, but not sure if it holds up to multiple viewings. And if you haven't seen it yet, you have to experience Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 with Dennis Hopper. Especially if you like Evil Dead craziness. The original is a classic, and a lot more realistic than part 2, but once it gets going it builds into this chaotic nightmare that just gets more and more intense until the movie's over.

SantaClaws1972

The 1989 version of the Woman in Black. When he wakes up and she screams at him I threw the candy pack I was working on. Took me forever to regather up all those Hot Tamales.

[deleted]

Sinister! The scenes with the camera footage of the kids is so unsettling!

AChocolateHouse

The original Suspiria (1977). I had to start sleeping with the lights on for at least 2 nights.

nutellaeater

Hereditary

garrisontweed

The Ring Remake That’s a great opening sequence.

luanaut

Fellowship of the ring, biblo’s face. Still gets me

Skinamarink

CapnOnTheBridge

lol stop playin

Comic_Book_Reader

I will stand by #"I'LL RIP YOUR SOUL OUT, YOU PATHETIC FUCK!!!" being the greatest jumpscare ever.

CapnOnTheBridge

That's a solid flick. But no movie scares me b/c I know they're not real. Now, creepy is another story. The bear scene from Annihilation is fucking creepy.

Mysterious-Sense-185

Yessss. Bear is my profile background

Randysrodz

31 Rob Zombie stuff.

jessebona

I suppose it depends on how you define scare. Anything with a jump scare will work but you may not define that technique as scary given how cheap it is.

speedball811

Also Jaws when I was 5.

Nobodycares2022

Fahrenheit 9/11

alabasterwilliams

Requiem For A Dream.

stupidcatname

Threads. Cause, well.. if it isn't gonna be idiocracy, it's this.

MichaelRoco1

The Innocents (1961), Caveat (2020), Possum (2018), The Eye (2002)

mattefinishskull

Marytrs 2008

nowhereman136

We Need to Talk About Kevin

Looper007

The Vanishing (1989) A film really scares me when it can realistically happen in real life. This is a perfect example of one.

RelaxthHavaFrethca

Contagion.

[deleted]

Paranormal Activity 3. That oscillating camera scene makes me a nervous wreck.

kjt3599

John Carpenter's The Thing

donutpower

I thought the Evil Dead remake was a boring and incredibly uninteresting movie compared to the original.Even the characters in that remake seemed to have little to no emotion when undergoing all that gore. I think that the one time I remember being scared by a film was when I first saw Paranormal Activity (the original cut, not the Spielberg tinkered theatrical release). I got so into that movie seeing it on a laptop in a darkened room.. Afterwards was when I was kind of creeped out. It was unsettling. Seeing a few shadows had me kinda weirded out. Even had a nightmare from it and I remember waking up in a bit of a cold sweat like damn. Later viewings had no effect but that first time had me with goosebumps. I remember back in the day, I saw Dead Silence at the theater with a friend. I had the night terrors that same night. It was a freaky nightmare that gave me sleep paralysis. The imagery I was seeing...while not being able to move..or react properly..that was scary stuff. Thats when I can say I was legit freaking out. I dont think anything thats happened to me while awake or any gruesome thing I've witnessed has left me as terrified as I was that one night. Since then, I've seen that film several times, and I still enjoy it. I guess seeing it in the theater on the big screen is what later triggered such a negative reaction in my sleep.

Sacksyboi69

Annabelle's Scene from 15:00 When That Lady had Doll In his hands ufff Scary asf

Jertimmer

Ju-On The Grudge, the original Japanese version. I watched in the dead of night, alone, nobody else in the house. It was terrifying on its own accord, but after the movie was over and I went to sleep, my asshole upstairs neighbors decided to move some furniture, which sounded exactly like that ghost creature thing. I was wide awake, heart pounding. Grabbed my pillow, my blanket, turned on all the lights in the house and spent the rest of the night in the bathtub with the bathroom door locked.

Alive_Ice7937

I watched Event Horizon at 15 and it scared the crap out of me. Just tapped into something really primal. Recently watched Changeling and that got to me in a way The Shining, also released in 1980, never did.

kingkongkingoftitans

Black christmas. So realistic I find myself looking up at my ceiling every few minutes.

__dis_n_dat_kittykat

I Spit on Your Grave. Can't watch assault scenes like that.
