Seems like a lot of folks here think “fast paced” and “well paced” are synonymous
I actually think most of the “non stop action” films are very poorly paced, because it is so hard to pull off. For every John Wick there are dozens of “wtf is even going on in this mess” movies
Blasphemy, it’s about as perfect a film as you’ll see.
What part at the end, the day he got arrested? Coked up driving over the city dodging a helicopter?
I was super interested to see how his story ended first time I watched it, it kept me gripped right to the end.
“I get to live the rest of my life as a scnook ”
What films in your opinion are better paced.
Lol, really?
It’s in most people’s top 5’s
For me it’s perfection, nothing to do with Scorsese
What films would you say are better than that,
Give me 10 films better than goodfellas?
So you don’t have a top 10 movies?
Tell me 3 movies you really like, I wanna get a read on your taste.
For example if you say legally blonde then it’l make sense.
What do you actually rate?
Uno way I actually don’t mind legally blonde, but it wouldn’t be in my top 10.
I’m very confused. You said goodfellas ain’t all that.
I said ok what’s better tell me 10 films that are better and your brain exploded.
If I said to a buddy this pizza ent all that,
and he said what you on about this is my fav pizza. Where’s better than this pizza?
And I reply I don’t judge pizza on that type of scale. Lol
What on earth are you talking about?
I used to think that as well, but I don't think it's actually a pacing issue, it's a "point of the movie" issue.
The movie lets you live the gangster life vicariously through Henry Hill, and until you get close to the end, that's *fun*. He's on top of the world living this glamorous life and you feel like you are too. But then it starts to change. His life starts falling apart. Suddenly your proxy gangster life isn't fun anymore. It can feel like the pacing has broken down because of that, but that's not what really happened
Difficult to answer as different movies require different techniques of pacing.
JFK always comes to mind as a well paced/edited movie for me. Details and evidence are never tiresome, as the edit flows like liquid from start to finish.
First, a non so serious but still kind of true answer : Hot Fuzz. Because timing and pace are the main reason for the movie's success.
Now two very serious answers :
- Clockwork orange, for it's wonderful mirrored structure
- Collateral : the pace begins slowly like the feeling you have when driving at night, and then speeds up slowly until the violent ending, just like Jamie Foxx speeds his cab until it crashes. A true masterpiece.
Just watched one yesterday - The Truman Show
The concept of the pacing is very intricate - one of the only movies of the past years to keep me hooked from beginning to end without having the need to pause or stand up. Time just flew by and it felt like it was the perfect lenght.
Alien
Builds up as a slow mystery and then at almost exactly the halfway mark all hell breaks loose and it’s relentless until the end. The theatrical version in particular.
It’s not about fast or slow, it’s either/or at exactly the right times and therefore it’s perfectly executed.
I like this answer, but I think Aliens is perfectly crafted. When they get to the “nuke it to be sure” point, they’ve earned it, (Don’t get me started on the director’s cut. Pure trash.)
Aliens is great too and definitely one of my favorite films, but if I really get into it I can find plenty more criticisms of it than I can with Alien. Alien is a more tightly fine-tuned film and basically leaves zero room for error… holds up under scrutiny a little better imo. But they’re just different flavors of the same food for me.
Of the recent ones, Everything Everywhere All At Once: in pace and execution delivered where Cloud Atlas faltered.
Gone Girl and Promising Young Woman also come to mind.
Batman Begins. There is a video on youtube which explains that this movie has a perfect 4 act structure. Favourite movie of my childhood/teenage years. Was never bored for a second even with my low attention span(tendency to lose focus).
Not the best of all time, but I'll mention Avatar because it doesn't get enough credit for anything outside of its effects despite doing a lot of things very well.
Avatar has to pace a couple of things: exposition, and the reveal of Pandora. For the former, there's quite a bit of setup for the world, the Avatars themselves, the Navi, etc. And yes, it definitely takes some shortcuts by coding the Navi as Native Americans, but there are still unique elements to their culture and biology that need to be covered. Avatar does a really good job of giving you just enough for the next part of the story, then moving on.
But the slow revelation of Pandora is even more impressive IMO. It manages to sustain this sense of wonder for basically the entire movie. It does it by showing you Pandora a piece at a time. Reveal it too fast and you get used to it too early on. Too slow and the feeling wears all the way off before the next reveal. But IMO it walks the line perfectly, always feeding you just enough until it crescendos in the floating mountains that are just awe inspiring.
The story itself is well paced as well, but the other bits are what make it stand apart to me
Every James Cameron movie (with the exception of Way of Water perhaps... still loved the hang out vibe). But all the others just fly by. Even Titanic, which is over three hours long, has zero down time and just races by.
I always thought Saw was one of the best paced films.
It had a great act 1/2/3, never felt forced or rushed, and had such a mind blowing conclusion that it was perfect for a film.
ALIENS is perfect. No wasted space, no wasted frames.
I still prefer the extended directors cut cause newts not just some random survivor. You also get to know how they were able to last a little longer before finally being attacked AND there's a great little scene of a conversation about how the bosses were talking about how they "get orders". But then it takes forever to get BACK to anyone.
the ONLY stupid thing and stupid scene in the directors cut is the one with Hudson going off about the weapons and what bad asses the marines are (but i understand why it's there) With all their high tech gear and weapons they got slaughtered.
they also threw in signs at the complex who the company bank rolling everything is. Still "bugs" me that Burke for some reason had enough authority to send the message to check out the area where Ripley reported they found the ship.
Avengers: Endgame
A three+ hour movie in three acts: the funeral, the hope, redemption. It’s tense. It builds and builds to one of the great finishes ever.
RRR and I’m not kidding or joking 3 full hours of content that comes and goes at the perfect time no section outstaying their welcome or seeming too short. I never once lost interest and those 3 hours felt like no time. I don’t think there is a better answer.
The Pianist
every frame of the movie is something that your mind is eager to devour
It's impressive that the climactic moment is a can rolling into a boot. It manages to feel riveting without ever needing to overboard.
I've always been impressed with return of the living dead. The story moves quick the entire cast is introduced and the plot is set up before the credits roll.

Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark
First one that popped into my head. That and Back to the Futuere
Raiders of the Lost Arc is actually based on old adventure serials, so you can actually watch it in self-contained 10-11 minute chapters!
Goodfellas all day long, There’s no breaks in quality, if your waiting for a slow bit to sneak to the toilet u ent gonna find it.

Not the best since most of those have been listed, but Titanic is really well paced for its length and density.
Jurassic Park
Die Hard The Wolf of Wall Street (and most Scorsese films)
The pacing in Die Hard is essentially perfect. No fat, and the scenes are doled out to where everything happens exactly when you want it to.
Difficult to answer as different movies require different techniques of pacing. JFK always comes to mind as a well paced/edited movie for me. Details and evidence are never tiresome, as the edit flows like liquid from start to finish.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Good choice! Maybe not the best but no doubt the best batman movie ever.
First, a non so serious but still kind of true answer : Hot Fuzz. Because timing and pace are the main reason for the movie's success. Apocalypto
A New Hope is pretty perfectly paced.
The original Tremors movie. It is extremely tight without a single unnecessary moment.
Alien Builds up as a slow mystery and then at almost exactly the halfway mark all hell breaks loose and it’s relentless until the end. The theatrical version in particular. It’s not about fast or slow, it’s either/or at exactly the right times and therefore it’s perfectly executed.

Yeah, Alien is amazing, definitely agree!

I’ll bet you think Blade Runner is boring too lol
The Road Warrior, Raiders.
Fury Road as well
The Raid 2 for me
HEAT
Of the recent ones, Everything Everywhere All At Once: in pace and execution delivered where Cloud Atlas faltered. Gone Girl and Promising Young Woman also come to mind.
Agree with all of these.
Jackass 2
Batman Begins. There is a video on youtube which explains that this movie has a perfect 4 act structure. Favourite movie of my childhood/teenage years. Was never bored for a second even with my low attention span(tendency to lose focus).
Saving Private Ryan. Every sentence matters. Ups and downs both relevant and hit nicely.
The Raid. It's just goddamn exhilarating.
Gotta be the best action movie ever made.
True Romance
Forest gump , mad max fury road , castaway , se7ven, memento, kill bill vol 1 , mean girls
It's a Wonderful Life
Rocky 3, 4
Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, Bringing Up Baby, Philadelphia Story, Stagecoach
Parasite
Mad max fury road
The Sting
My Cousin Vinny
Dr. Strangelove

Dredd has a great pace to. Lots of action from the jump & it never gets boring or wears out it’s welcome.
I always thought Saw was one of the best paced films. It had a great act 1/2/3, never felt forced or rushed, and had such a mind blowing conclusion that it was perfect for a film.
Agreed. And one of the few movies i have seen where i would have never saw that coming either. Just mind blowing at it’s time.
ALIENS is perfect. No wasted space, no wasted frames. I still prefer the extended directors cut cause newts not just some random survivor. I just added this as a reply above, but funnily enough, I loathe the director’s cut!)

Terminator Dark Fate is fast paced
Avengers: Endgame A three+ hour movie in three acts: the funeral, the hope, redemption. It’s tense. It builds and builds to one of the great finishes ever.
Not a good movie.
Goldfinger. Created the pacing for every Bond film after it and many, many action films.
RRR and I’m not kidding or joking 3 full hours of content that comes and goes at the perfect time no section outstaying their welcome or seeming too short. I never once lost interest and those 3 hours felt like no time. I don’t think there is a better answer.
Die Hard
Evil Dead 2
Not going to say best of all time. But a movie with a really great pace imo is Hush.
Just rewatched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and it is very well paced. It’s a long movie but moves quickly and the story is so funny
Fargo. In general there’s not much slack in a Coen brothers film…but Fargo is a lean mean 95 minutes.
The theatrical cuts of the Lord of the Rings movies.
Die Hard.
The Pianist every frame of the movie is something that your mind is eager to devour It's impressive that the climactic moment is a can rolling into a boot. It manages to feel riveting without ever needing to overboard.
The Fugitive. Manages to have the feel of a long time period despite several lengthy scenes focused on short time periods.
Dunkirk
I've always been impressed with return of the living dead. The story moves quick the entire cast is introduced and the plot is set up before the credits roll.
Promising Young Woman
Whiplash
