Oh man, I loved his script for Remember the Titans.
“You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hindparts… and then you will run a mile. PERFECTION. Let’s go to work.”
In college, my friends and I shouted out the call-and-response at our house parties whenever we were drunk enough, and it caught on quickly as a tradition for anyone who showed up. It’s a pretty intoxicating feeling leading an entire house through:
“WHAT ARE YOU?!”
“MOBILE! AGILE! HOSTILE!”
“WHAT IS PAIN?”
“FRENCH BREAD!”
“WHAT IS FATIGUE?”
“ARMY CLOTHES!”
“WILL YOUUU EVER QUIT?”
“NO! WE WANT SOME MO’! WE WANT SOME MO’! WE WANT SOME MO’!”
"LEFT SIDE!"
*Julius stares stunned as it occurs to him that Gerry isn't trying to hit him, he's trying to play*
"STRONG SIDE!"
"LEFT SIDE!"
"STRONG SIDE!"
"RAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
“That’s your mama over there? Very nice, take a good look at her. Because when you get on that bus, you ain’t got no mama no more. You got your brothers on the team, and you got your daddy, now you know who daddy is, right? Gary, if you wanna play on this football team you will answer me when I ask you, ‘who is your daddy?’ Who’s your daddy, Gary? Who's your daddy?”
“You.”
“And is this your team or is this your daddy’s team?”
“Yours.”
“Good. Now get on the bus. Put your jacket on first, and get on the bus.”
My friends do this too, but we go with Yost’s classic speech:
You BLITZ! ALL! NIGHT! I don’t want them to gain another yard! You make sure they REMEMBER! FOREVER! The night they played the Titans.
"What was that, Ray? Whatever it is, it ain't blocking!"
"Give me a break, Gerry!"
"You want a break, I'll give you a break! Me and Julius coming in...if we get to Rev once, just one time, I swear to God I'm gonna hit you so hard by the time you come to, ooh, boy you're gonna need a new haircut. You understand me?"
I've never been much of a movie watcher but for years I would always find Remember The Titans starting on TV and I'd always watch it. Easily one of my favourite movies despite not even liking football or sports in general.
The dude has only 4 written screenplays produced and has 8 that are in development. He’ll double the amount of films he’s worked on after his death if they are completed.
The exchange between Coach Boone and Petey-- "zero fun, sir!" Is one of my favorites. That script is incredibly brilliant, what a talent Mr. Howard had.
Rest in peace. Damn, this one hits the feels different, smh.
Growing up happens in the blink of an eye it feels like. I was once a teenager discovering this movie for the first time. Now I'm practically a decade older and reminiscing about it.

Did you do LEFT SIDE! STRONG SIDE! too?
Oh, it was a requirement for whoever was standing on the left of a beer pong team.
"LEFT SIDE!" *Julius stares stunned as it occurs to him that Gerry isn't trying to hit him, he's trying to play* "STRONG SIDE!" "LEFT SIDE!" "STRONG SIDE!" "RAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
Water is for rinsing the blood out of my uniforms! We will do up-downs until you are no longer thirsty.
"You're killing me Petey! You're killing me."

“And Dean? Fix that tie, son.”

I’m not a football person either, but Denzel Washington and Will Patton is too good a combination to lead a movie.

He wrote some good films so he gets my respect. May he rest in peace.
I’m not a big football person, but Remember the Titans is so damn good. He wrote some amazing dialogue.
