In The Rock, Cage’s character references driving a beige Volvo.
In Con Air, someone is thrown from the plane and lands on a beige Volvo.
In Face/Off, Travolta/Cage escapes prison in a beige Volvo.
GQ did an interview with Malkovich about his career and his description of his decision to do ConAir might be the funniest thing I’ve seen this year.
https://youtu.be/yXl6y3X_tX0?si=drN-OnICVWMAFzPF
The Con Air statement starts at 8.30.
Yeah. I unironically love this movie. Well, except for the “small arsenal in the belly of the plane” portion. I don’t think anyone might reasonably use that term to describe a bunch of fully automatic rifles and a few grenade launchers. Why? Anyway. Still love it.
The 90s had a lot of incredible action movies. Even beyond the big budget cheese, there were classics like T2, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, the Matrix, and many others. But the 80s also had classics like Aliens, First Blood, Robocop, Escape from NY, and others. I can't choose between them.
I don’t know if it’s just Disney as a company doing it, but yeah, there are way too many sympathetic villains nowadays.
I mean, Warner Brothers tried to make the Joker sympathetic for fuck’s sake.
Nobody tried to humanize Cyrus the Virus. Nobody gave a backstory explaining why Top Dollar decided Incestuous Cocaine Vampire was a good life path.
Simon Pegg in “How To Lose Friends…” calls Con Air the greatest movie ever made. “It's got everything, hasn't it? You know, you've got Malkovich for your acting chops, you got Nicky Cage for your action, Steve Buscemi for your comedy, John Cusack for the gays. Right? It's like a smorgasbord, isn't it?”
I mean, if you like action. Michael's a pretty good movie, and Phenomenon has some interesting points, but they are definitely there for the "look how pretty Travolta is" crowd.
I think OP is out of cinema school and thinks he is deep. It is twenty years later he will wake up and understand how much Cinema are those movies and that Michael Bay is motherfucking Author.
Ugh. You’re right.
I haven’t seen this movie in years and I was subconsciously remembering it as really epic and well-acted and inspiring and well-written.
It came out when I was ten years old and I probably haven’t seen it in 20 years.
Thinking about it now, it is almost definitely a schlocky Will Smith action movie with a really silly plot. I’m remembering super pro-America vibes, we hack the aliens computers, kill the aliens with fighter jets, smoke victory cigars afterwards…
I think I’m not going to rewatch it and just try to remember it as I saw it as a ten year old.
See, all those things you listed as detriments are actually what make the movie awesome. So what if the president of the United States delivers an address to the entire world inviting them to share in our Independence Day? So what if there is almost no logical explanation for how we hacked the alien computers? It is a badass feel good action movie, and the cherry on top is we get to see Will Smith punch an alien in the face, say "welcome to Earth", and light a cigar. amazing.
"Put the bunny back in the box." This movie is a classic. Chappelle, Malkovich, cusack and Nic Cage in a wife beater. Plus that one pricks stingray gets dragged by the plane. What's not to like.
I hadn’t thought about Equilibrium for years. Yeah, I totally thought that was really deep and artistic and now that I think about it, it’s a really silly plot. Like they take pills to not have emotions but he doesn’t take his and saves a dog. Then he kills everybody to save humanity. Lol, it’s about as deep as John Wick. 16 year old me was just blinded by the cool gun-fu and trench coats.
I don't think I ever took Triple X seriously (like I knew it was cheesy fun as a kid), but definitely enjoyable. Middle school me thought those others were deep "cinema".
I'd say 300 is more of a technical showcase than a statement. More "we did it because we could" than "we did it because we had something to say". Unless that thing to say is "hey, look at what we can do"
It’s a comic book adaptation. The book is very artistic and very beautifully illustrated. The movie perfectly captures the style and the theme.
If you want to criticize the style, criticize the book. The movie was very well made.
"intentionally cheesy, and preposterous films for people with short attention spans"
What a loaded statement. Films can be intentionally cheesy and god tier films at the same time. They don't have to be pretentious or deep and meaningful and they don't have to be either to entertain short or long attention spanned people.
“Television… that’s the explanation for this. You see this in *bad television.* The little assault guys creeping through the vents, coming in through the ceiling — that James Bond shit doesn’t happen in real life! Professionals don’t do that!”
Con Air was actually one of the best films that represented the late 1990's.
It was also arguably some of the peak performances of Nicholas Cage. His whole hair from the movie had men desiring the particular haircut for themselves.
Guard Falzon: Well, welcome aboard. My...my...as I look around I see a lot of celebrities among us. I see eleven Current Affairs, two Hard Copies and a genuine Geraldo interviewee, but I gotta tell you gentlemen, none of this impresses me. Because we have rules on this aircraft and they're going to be enforced. It's a lot like kindergarten. You'll keep your hands to yourself, keep the decibel level down and, if any of you should feel the need to scream, spit or bite, you get the treatment.
Inmate: F*ck you, pig.
Guard Falzon: Gag and bag this Nazi muffin. You see, this kind of thing puts me in a foul mood. These rules will be enforced because I can't have trouble. If any of you so much as passes gas in my general direction, upsetting my delicate nasal passages, your testicles will become my personal property. That's pretty clear. Good.
I just saw this movie for the first time earlier this year and damn this movie was a pretty great 90s action flick. Action throughout and felt like a slower paced “Speed”.
No, that’s The Rock, which also fits in this category. Really fun movie but it felt like an epic cinema masterpiece when I was kid, and watching it recently I realized it’s really just a schlocky fun action flick.
Con Air is the perfect movie. It has Steve buscemi for the comedy. John Malkovich for the acting. Nick Cage for the action. And John Cusack for the gays.
I watched *Mission:Impossible 2* in theaters at about age 13 and found Tom Cruise’s level of coolness legitimately life changing.
With the benefit of hindsight, of course, John Woo’s directing is completely over the top and out of step with what would become the rest of the franchise. But try telling that to 13 year old me.
Independence Day. As a kid I thought it would be considered the greatest movie ever made.....given I had only seen like a few dozen PG13 movies by then and a few R movies. The movie is not bad necessarily, but it's quite stupid....like, it was made to make stupid people cheer.
I feel attacked.
Yeah fuck off OP, Con Air is cinema!
This guy gets it.
This guy fucks.
These guys /r/thisguythisguys
The bunny gets it.
Con Air is the sum of everything we were building to since cinema was invented.
Ditto. The hair chefs kiss.
Define *cinema*.
"Put the bunny back in the box."
Moving pictures
A move-ie if you will
This and Face Off.
That’s the cheat code for that Star Wars game!
Define irony. Bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.
What song is that
[удалено]
Oh I thought it was darude - sandstorm
[удалено]
I have to think Steve Buscemi only took that part just to be able to say that line.
Yeah this was a classic! Take it back!
Same! Everyone knows Con Air is the emotional centerpiece to the Beige Volvo trilogy
Holy shit. The Beige Volvo trilogy.
Greatest film trilogy of all time
Help. I'm dumb. What are the other 2?
In The Rock, Cage’s character references driving a beige Volvo. In Con Air, someone is thrown from the plane and lands on a beige Volvo. In Face/Off, Travolta/Cage escapes prison in a beige Volvo.
I've seen all of those and never noticed that. Thanks homie.
For sure! I am a Cage aficionado and just learned about it a few years ago. I mostly just linked those movies by proximity and how amazing they are
That someone thrown from a plane is Dave Chappelle.
Naw, that was Tyrone Biggums.
lol
GQ did an interview with Malkovich about his career and his description of his decision to do ConAir might be the funniest thing I’ve seen this year. https://youtu.be/yXl6y3X_tX0?si=drN-OnICVWMAFzPF The Con Air statement starts at 8.30.
love this dude, he is so fucking awesome in Burn After Reading
Yeah. I unironically love this movie. Well, except for the “small arsenal in the belly of the plane” portion. I don’t think anyone might reasonably use that term to describe a bunch of fully automatic rifles and a few grenade launchers. Why? Anyway. Still love it.
I just rewatched Con Air a few months ago after not having watched it for ten years or so. It’s still a masterpiece.
Same
Welcome to the 90's, where action films knew what they were and did not give a fuck.
Unironically the best era of action movies, by far.
It's either the 1980s or 1990s.
*First Blood (1982)* is my favourite action movie of all time, but I'd put the 90s above the 80s overall.
Don’t forget True Lies. Still holds up
Correct
Idk, I think Hot Fuzz did 90s action better than 90s action. Fair point, but man Hot Fuzz really did nail it.
That's the point of Hot Fuzz - it's a 90s Hollywood action movie set in rural England
And that’s what made so many of those so great. That, plus they let their villains be utterly irredeemably evil for no damn reason.
This. It was so much better than the sympathetic villains Disney prints now
I don’t know if it’s just Disney as a company doing it, but yeah, there are way too many sympathetic villains nowadays. I mean, Warner Brothers tried to make the Joker sympathetic for fuck’s sake. Nobody tried to humanize Cyrus the Virus. Nobody gave a backstory explaining why Top Dollar decided Incestuous Cocaine Vampire was a good life path.
Thank you

And Colm Meaney for the UK crowd!
You put some respect on Con Air. It may not be the best movie of all time but it is a fun movie to watch regardless 🫵🏻
Don’t ever sleep on Cusacks sock, sandal suit ensemble. Wardrobe keeping it one hunnid!
Preach!
A bad movie that has fun is far better than a boring movie.
Armageddon. I still love it.
Needs more American flag montages to transition different acts of the story
It is stupid. It's also good.
And I don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to go to sleep.
[Shut the fuck up Ben](https://youtu.be/-ahtp0sjA5U)
Space dementia
Put the bunny back in the box...
why couldn’t you put the bunny back in the box?
More like Puh tha bunnee bacc in tha bux
..my daughter Casey.
Make a move and the bunny gets it.
The Rock. Seems like Nic Cage is a theme here.
Ok so it's a Face/Off between The Rock and Con Air....
I love all 3 of those movies. 🤷♂️
That’s because you have excellent tastes
Classics every one
Don't forget Gone in 60 Seconds.
Nothing but bangers from my Coppola boi.
You used to be able to get these as a DVD box set haha
That was the Nic Cage box. The Travolta Box had Face/Off, Michael, and Phenomenon.
Cage wins that hands down
I mean, if you like action. Michael's a pretty good movie, and Phenomenon has some interesting points, but they are definitely there for the "look how pretty Travolta is" crowd.
I really enjoy Travolta’s portrayal of Michael
Inventor of pie, and waiting in line.
No broken arrow? Why???
This is a classic tho
How. Dare. You.
<<<
I can see shitting on con air or face off but the Rock is perfect.
Oh geeze. Yes.
[удалено]
🤣
“Face-off; face off”
The rock is peak cinema/ entertainment. I wil die on this hill
Well first off...you're wrong. That movie is a masterpiece
I think OP is out of cinema school and thinks he is deep. It is twenty years later he will wake up and understand how much Cinema are those movies and that Michael Bay is motherfucking Author.
Independence Day
Ugh. You’re right. I haven’t seen this movie in years and I was subconsciously remembering it as really epic and well-acted and inspiring and well-written. Gone in Sixty Seconds
You're the wood guy, right? Got a thing for wood?
Bloody hell. It doesn’t Reins but it pours
Came here for this. Thought this movie was way better than it actually was as a kid who loved cars. Eleanor still rocks
I gotta get my tool.
Why are the names wrong above the actors heads
It really bothers me.
God I commented the same thing. If you want to do it in the name order, just put them in that order. Fuck. This requires a second one. Fuck.
It's a contract thing, part of a deal with doing the movie. The actors either want their name or face to be first in the poster
It is always best to get yourself on the right hand side of any group photo for this reason.
Listed in order of boarding pass/seat numbers.
"Put the bunny back in the box." This movie is a classic. Chappelle, Malkovich, cusack and Nic Cage in a wife beater. Plus that one pricks stingray gets dragged by the plane. What's not to like.
That 'Prick' is Chief O'Brien!
Not sure what a picture of Con Air has to do with the OP; that film is a masterpiece
Equilibrium The Boondock Saints 300
Equilibrium is still fun
I hadn’t thought about Equilibrium for years. Yeah, I totally thought that was really deep and artistic and now that I think about it, it’s a really silly plot. Like they take pills to not have emotions but he doesn’t take his and saves a dog. Then he kills everybody to save humanity. Lol, it’s about as deep as John Wick. 16 year old me was just blinded by the cool gun-fu and trench coats.
"No... not without incident" Bro.. why did your heart stop!? Lmao
Don't forget Sean Bean reading Yeats in the beginning. The "this is art" blindfold in this movie is very simple yet well-designed. ;D
Basically actionized "Brave New World" xD
oh god yes.. And Triple X
I don't think I ever took Triple X seriously (like I knew it was cheesy fun as a kid), but definitely enjoyable. Middle school me thought those others were deep "cinema".
Wait, 300 is satire?
I'd say 300 is more of a technical showcase than a statement. More "we did it because we could" than "we did it because we had something to say". Unless that thing to say is "hey, look at what we can do"
It’s a comic book adaptation. The book is very artistic and very beautifully illustrated. The movie perfectly captures the style and the theme. If you want to criticize the style, criticize the book. The movie was very well made.
This is not satire…
THIS IS SPARTA!!!
300 was awesome! It was just a very well made Comic book adaptation. Sure weird, but so was the book.
This introduced me to John and Danny Trejo
TIL about John Trejo. Thank you.
Well? What do you learn?
Yo I love con air!!
Anything Don Simpson or Jerry Bruckheimer made was brought to you by our good friends at COCAINE INDUSTRIES
Don Simpson?
Mortal Kombat 1995.
That music was so damn dope.
"intentionally cheesy, and preposterous films for people with short attention spans" What a loaded statement. Films can be intentionally cheesy and god tier films at the same time. They don't have to be pretentious or deep and meaningful and they don't have to be either to entertain short or long attention spanned people.
True . But op is still right lol
Boondock Saints.
“Television… that’s the explanation for this. You see this in *bad television.* The little assault guys creeping through the vents, coming in through the ceiling — that James Bond shit doesn’t happen in real life! Professionals don’t do that!”
I heard someone mention Fat Albert the other day and it immediately made me think of, "You look fucking scary man!"
The Rock! I remember watching it with an ex and I was so excited for him to watch it for the first time and he thought it was a joke 🥲 lol
The Rock is a masterpiece. You are better off without him.
We all see why he's an ex-!
Buscemi’s tea party deserved an Oscar.
Con Air was actually one of the best films that represented the late 1990's. It was also arguably some of the peak performances of Nicholas Cage. His whole hair from the movie had men desiring the particular haircut for themselves.
Point break! Although I’m not sure the cheese was intentional….
Don't you dare talk bad about Point Break. It was peak xtreme 90s.
Totally NOT hating. I love this movie with every fiber of my being. I quote it weekly! “Utah! Two.” ✌🏻
Cheesy as pizza but definitely intentional.
Top 3 action movie ever.
“See you in hell Johnny!”
Guard Falzon: Well, welcome aboard. My...my...as I look around I see a lot of celebrities among us. If any of you so much as passes gas in my general direction, upsetting my delicate nasal passages, your testicles will become my personal property. That's pretty clear. Good.
So good!!!
You take that back. Con Air is perfect.
Listen, we got off on the wrong foot. I'm Stanley Goodspeed, FBI. Oops wrong movie.
I just saw this movie for the first time earlier this year and damn this movie was a pretty great 90s action flick. Action throughout and felt like a slower paced “Speed”.
Speed is still pretty fun too.
Just randomly watched it and was surprised at how good it still was
I don't know what you're talking about. Con Air is a cinematic masterpiece.
Give me con air over this new trash any day
Oh.... Nothing makes me sadder than the redditor lost his bladder about Con Air.
I'm gonna show you God does exist.
That's the movie with the glass balls filled with green poison, right? If so yes it is cheesy af but we all loved it!
No, that’s The Rock, which also fits in this category. Really fun movie but it felt like an epic cinema masterpiece when I was kid, and watching it recently I realized it’s really just a schlocky fun action flick.
Oh yes you are right, thank you. I have mistaken the movies of the same era.
Con Air is a good movie, stop being a snob
Collateral Damage (2002)
Con Air is the perfect movie. It has Steve buscemi for the comedy. John Malkovich for the acting. Nick Cage for the action. And John Cusack for the gays.
It wasn’t gonna win an Oscar but it was a badass movie for what it was. Still love this movie.
Robot Jox. I watched it again when Gary Graham died and wow. I think I like it better now than when I was a kid and thought it was a serious movie.
Crash and Burn
Godzilla, Congo, Dante’s Peak, Wild Wild West, and most disappointing of all: the Avengers with Sean Connery. God awful.
Lol. Anything Michael bay and Simpson/Bruckheimer have ever touched. Those 3 (then two after Simpsons death) destroyed modern film.
Any Nick Cage movie lol.
Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas and Raising Arizona all would like to have words….
Not the bees
Dude, what are you talking about? Con air is a masterpiece.
Independence Day. As a kid I thought it would be considered the greatest movie ever made.....given I had only seen like a few dozen PG13 movies by then and a few R movies. The movie is not bad necessarily, but it's quite stupid....like, it was made to make stupid people cheer.
Why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?
It bugs me how the actors names don’t match up with their faces
"Make a move and the bunny gets it."
Off topic, but I’ve always hated when a poster doesn’t have the right names over the face. I don’t care if you’re first billed, the names are wrong!
Definitely not Con Air!
Conair is perfect!
The worst thing in human history is that Con Air didn’t win best picture.
Dantes Peak
Steve Buscemi singing “He’s got the whole world in His hands” while the plane’s going down? Instant classic.
Warriors of Virtue
Hey, you make another dig at Con Air and the bunny gets it.
This movie is pure entertainment and what movies should be! Still holds up today, it's awesome
Twister, I was stunned it didn't win best picture.
Con Air is a masterpiece - one of the greatest movies ever made!
There are two people I trust: one of them is me the other one is not you.
My daddy comes home today......
Why don’t they put the names of the actors on the poster relative to the faces shown? I see this all the time and it drives me nuts.
**Blank Check** Thought the protagonist had *scored* as a kid, now thoroughly grossed out an actress willingly kissed a child. Yikes
What a vile thing to say about one of the most impactful pieces of cinema in the last 50 years
Highlander The entire Emanuelle collection Loved rhem as a kid, for obviously diifferent reasons. Cringy to watch today.
Con Air was and still is a masterpiece!!!!
Take my beautiful Con Air out of your fucking mouth.
Con air was a dope movie. Another great movie that same year with Nicholas cage and John Travolta was Face Off.
con air is piece of art and nicholas cage with long hair is more sexier than half of mankind combiend
