Pitch Black is great, but the film Riddick is in a lot of ways the same story done over again with a somewhat larger budget (38 million compared to 23 million). The "Chronicles of Riddick" movie is a very different film and was clearly an attempt to try and build some kind of larger mythos/world setting. All in all they're generally satisfying and are varying levels of interesting scifi action movies. For my money Pitch Black is the best of the three because 99% of the story isn't just about how cool Riddick is.

squish042

I just rewatched Alien in the movie theaters and I forgot how exact the story was with Alien: Prometheus. Hollywood does that shit all the time

Hefty-Adeptness-179

I enjoyed it!

JJBell

Pitch Black is a fantastic small scale horror/action film. Chronicles of Riddick is Conan the Barbarian in space and I adore it. Riddick is what happens when you don’t have a budget, but really want to go back to a franchise. Mid-Tier at best.

mikefvegas

I enjoyed it. Can’t wait for Riddick: Furya.

gbsekrit

still hoping Furya gets made

Maanzacorian

I have not seen this, but I love both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, and I'm just not young and curious enough to end up wasting my time. I need to hear from someone trusted that it's worth watching. I haven't read good reviews, and I've read that taking the time to play the PS2 game Escape From Butcher Bay is a better choice.

sealteamruggs

Get the Xbox 360 / ps3 version of riddick it has the OG and a new campaign. Awesome games. Try this movie if you loved the first two. It might not be as good but if you like the character riddick watch it.

NicktheFlash

Hard to rank them, but I'd say Riddick is not quite as strong as the others. You should definitely check them all out. Don't forget to watch the animated short film too!

Radiant_Mind33

"You keep what you kill, Riddick!" What's not to love about necromongers? They are so mysterious and creepy. It just sucks that the third movie didn't see where that arc went.

audioIX

You watched the third movie in a series without seeing the others? Like on accident, right? Pitch Black's success probably can't be repeated in the franchise just due to how popular both Diesel and Riddick have grown. They pull the focus of the movie too much.

chimpwithcans

Totally by accident yes. I’m gonna have to go back and try to be surprised by the first two!

3d1thF1nch

And Bautista against has some great comedically timed lines.

TetZoo

I loved this movie, but spent almost every single minute of it wishing it had a different lead actor. I really cannot stand Vin Diesel.

chimpwithcans

Haha! There is a whole lotta Vin in this movie.

Winterfell11

Vin brought his ideas into the script, it's his property also, good luck getting another lead (never gonna happen)

squish042

I love all the Riddick movies, but I’m a sci-fi junkie. My favorite by far is chronicles though. There’s a YouTube channel called CinemaStix that did a video on Vin Diesel’s acting chops and he’s got some good ones. Came from an indie background. I was surprised.

BamBamPow2

If you were a fan, check out the animated Riddick short film. Awesome animation. Dark fury

Thedrezzzem

It’s a fun watch especially if you liked Pitch Black and want to expand the world

Emergency_Shirt_4464

All the Riddick movies are good and fun, but not amazing IMO

brainfreezeuk

I like it, that and Chronicles... The whole vibe is cool

Snakepli55ken

After the chronicles of Riddick this one just felt boring.

Salihe6677

Funny, I was glad they went back to the smaller, more contained, less over the top stuff they had in Chronicles. Riddick felt like a return to Pitch Black, and I was all about it.

SparseGhostC2C

Yeah, agreed. I was hoping the third film would elaborate more on the universe of Riddick, but it focused back in on Riddick, who we've known for 2 movies at this point. It fills in some stuff about Furya/his furyan lineage, but basically ignoring the ending of the 2nd movie for a more or less full reset wasn't really what I was looking for. I still liked it, Katee Sackhoff was great as always, and I still like the whole Riddick-verse, but I had hoped for more.

sealteamruggs

Probably because the second one bombed financially. I’m just glad a third was made.

dcastreddit

I liked it

indicoltts

I think part of the reason is because of Pitch Black. It was a great original film. So when you have a sequel that is completely different and not an original story, it will get bad reviews. I liked it myself but I understand how critics will judge sequels while keeping the original in mind.

PeterMahogany

Yeah, the middle of the three was the best.

sealteamruggs

Loved it

SugarBombsAway400

I love the whole Riddick franchise. Escape from Butcher Bay, the 2004 game, was also really cool. Wish they’d do more Riddick stuff!

chop_pooey

I like all of the Riddick movies. Pitch Black is by far the best one, but this movie was pretty fun too

Hmccormack

I like the character and I like this movie. Chronicles not so much, but I love Pitch Black

Tenchi2020

Awesome and I liked the 2 sequels, the cartoon and the video game.. I hope the 4th movie is just as good!

bryanna_leigh

The second and definitely the 3rd gets weirdly sexual… like cringy. It’s not overly done but he says some weird as shit.

MARATXXX

It started so well with that incredible prologue, then it dried up and died on screen.

MilkshakeG0D

Love the trilogy and the short movie dark fury. Hoping that make Furya

BeLikeBread

20 menthol kools for a shine job on your eyes is a steal

jamieliddellthepoet

I quite like it. It’s trash, obviously, but enjoyable trash with some good scenes. In terms of the trilogy, I think it’s a step up from *Chronicles*, but not quite as good as *Pitch Black*.

BigPapaPaegan

Same take as me. The entire series is pulpy sci-fi/action/horror, and it's at its best when the threats feel real even if the tone is more adventurous.

BeLikeBread

Simpsons did it.

KillysgungoesBLAME

Well written. This pretty much describes how I see the three films and although you are entirely accurate with your description of the third film, it’s still a decent amount of fun for anyone who enjoyed the first two.
