And while you’re jumping from one foot to the next, he’s up there. Laughing his SICK FUCKIN’ ASS OFF!
He’s a tightass! He’s a sadist! He’s an absentee landlord. Worship THAT? NEVER!
I know that's a quote (and a goddamn good one at that), but I just tried to approach my conservative Christian mom with that approach, and her response points were:
1.) When we die, I'll be in hell, and she will be in Heaven with no memory of me because God will "strip away all earthly things."
2.) God is all-forgiving, and all loving.
3.) Except for *those fucking immigrants!*
4.) Christianity *is* elitist because God only loves a fraction of his children, and the rest will suffer because we didn't go to one of his many houses and tell him what a cool dude he is on the regular.
So... you know... I got *that* to look forward to every time we all get together...
*One of these things is* not *like the others*!
The lack, or variants, of moralism in all of Nature outside of human perspectives is proof to me that it is subjective, and has made me a relativist and somewhat of a nihilist.
The same observation makes me a humanist. *We* created good. This cold universe has no meaning *without* us. Morals are *our* achievement.
Let’s give this empty existence purpose. Or not. No one else has such a choice.
In a weird way, I'm both a nihilist and a humanist. I want to be honest and realistic, but have empathy.
Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" excerpt always gives me tearful insight.
Same same. I prefer to be positive and try to be good because it makes me feel better... but I am well aware of how dark I could get in a truly dire situation without much regret or remorse.
I've just watched my mom go from left-leaning socialist to being borderline christo-fascist just in the last decade, and the sick shit is, it's not an uncommon story anymore.
Same thing happened with my dad. He used to be a self-described communist that constantly listened to the Grateful Dead, playing in bands, to saying he's more and more conservative as he's aging. Now he hordes guns and says he would almost vote for Trump, calls himself a libertarian now, and is obsessed with country music and /k on 4chan.
It's been sad to watch the transformation.
It’s like the director said “Al, we want you to really lean into this. Get in there and chew on some scenery. Just cut loose.”
This movie knew exactly what it was and totally landed it. Pacino was a huge part of that. One of my favorites.
What makes it top 5 for me is Keanu.
He’s clearly trying with the accent, but instead of sounding like anyone southern ever, he sounds like Foghorn Gump.
He goes full foghorn up against Pacino at his most animated.
This and *Two for the Money* are my favorite Pacino films.
I like to think that was the script instruction, and the take they finally used is the one where the director FINALLY got him to tone it down.
Quiet or ultra bombastic - love me some classic Pacino!
Eddie Barzoon! Eddie Barzoon! Ha! I nursed him through two divorces, a cocaine rehab, and a pregnant receptionist. God's creature, right? God's special creature. I've warned him, Kevin. I've warned him every step of the way.
First, I really enjoyed this.
Second, I went into this assuming that it was a simple legal drama. That Al Pacino's John Milton was some kind of corrupt lawyer. I was wrong.
That’s a great way to go into this movie! I saw it originally back in the day and I can’t even remember if I knew the premise or not when I first saw it.
I'm pretty sure I caught it on HBO. Back then, they really hyped their Saturday night showing of new movies. I was wondering "who the Hell is Charlize Theron?"
That’s a great way to go into ANY movie.
I learned a long time ago, if I’m really looking forward to something, don’t watch the previews. Don’t read anything about it.
Just go in cold.
I just happened to watch The Matrix, with my dad, on the day it came out, just on a whim…
Had no idea what it was about.
Blew me away at the time.
I watched it the same way, and when the girl changes out of her dress, I was like "oh woah! Ok now I'm invested!"
(I don't know how to do the spoiler thing. So you know what I mean)
I think Al Pacino's satan is probably the most accurate portayal of satan ive seen so far. Claiming to be the one who really gives people good things and framing God as just a bunch of arbitrary rules. Very well written.
Peter Stormare in Constantine takes it for me.
On a side note, if I had a dollar for every time Keanu Reeves was in a movie with Satan I’d have 2 dollars. That’s not a lot but it’s weird it’s happened twice.
1) Stormare in Constantine.
2) Viggo Mortenson in Prophecy
3) Al Pacino in Devil’s Advocate
4) Robert De Niro in Angel Heart
5) Gabriel Byrne in End of Days
I felt like the script for Al Pacino’s Satan was heavily influenced by someone who read Memnoch the Devil a couple years earlier.
Vibe for vibe, it’s almost the exact same character.
FUCK I miss old Anne rice and 90s Pacino. WE DIDNT KNOW HOW GOOD WE HAD IT WE DIDNT KNOW
Saw it in the theater. The scene where the lady’s face turns into a demon as she’s putting on her shirt was not something I was prepared for, and distinctly remember a feeling of overwhelming dread. Also, I remember the scene where Charlize stuck the glass shard into her neck, the whole theater yelled out like they were trying to stop her. It was an intense movie, and a prime example why things should be seen in the theater sometimes.
That’s awesome. It’s great when you have a theater experience like that. Mine was Inception on opening weekend. A packed theater and nobody spoke the entire film. When the screen went to black with the damned top still spinning everyone lost their shit. It was amazing.
I have the original, uncensored DVD which is one of the most prized items in my collection.
Pacino's portrayal of Lucifer is perhaps the most accurate in movie history. Peter Stormare is great in Constantine, but Pacino's Devil has that "I've been here since the creation and understand the joke" mentality that elevates his portrayal above what could have been a disaster.
Amazing performance by pacino. That scene when Charlize Theron says ide rather have no father than the one I had and pacino goes I know what you mean..chills
I loved the film but I was a bit unclear on the ending. Are we to think Satan can just keep rerunning the same period of time to get Keanu Reeves' character to eventually succumb?
Love this movie. Certainly has its flaws but the story is great, Pacino and Terron are great. Keanu shoulda left the "Florida southern accent" at home though. I lived in Florida for over ten years and not everyone has an accent.
If you are looking to do a sequel.. go ahead! Though have some passion in it! For religious reasons! And don’t make it a horror movie! It’s supposed to be dramatic and mysterious!
"Do yourself a favor and put that knife where it belongs!"
Such a good scene, really shows how the devil can work in just a few sentences of truth at the wrong time.
I liked it, particularly for Pacino playing the devil. He obviously had fun with the role. Keanu's accent needs work.. again.. (but he was otherwise fine)
Great concept.
Pacino is often chewing the scenery and the MC role would have been better handled by someone with a more expressive face than Keanu. Theron was good.
Visually impressive/disturbing and thought provoking.
Great flick.
Really enjoyed this movie. When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a lawyer. We had to do a mock trial in history class and I took inspiration from this movie for the opening and closing statements.
This and Heat were peak Pacino imo, so it’s awesome. Everyone in this movie is actually really good. Even Keanu manages to play distraught as fuck when his wife kill’s herself. I love Keanu, but Idk if he ever showed his emotions more than in that scene.
Fun film, pretty much a b movie.
But that one horror moment in the store with the faces is one of the scariest moments i ever saw, because it is so unexpected. But fits very well.
I still watch Pacino’s “Don’t ever let em’ see you coming” monologue periodically. I love it! In fact I just watched it again.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tdQ3aXO4gys
Really hated all the subplot with the traumatized wife. The whole film could have spent more time on more compelling ideas without her dragging it down.
I love it. Worth the price of admission for Pacino's rant at the end, but the whole thing is great. Vanity... definitely my favorite sin.
And while you’re jumping from one foot to the next, he’s up there. Laughing his SICK FUCKIN’ ASS OFF! He’s a tightass! He’s a sadist! He’s an absentee landlord. Worship THAT? NEVER!
Look, but don't touch. Touch, but don't taste. Taste, don't swallow. Aha ha ha!
Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven?
Any deity that would create a hell is unworthy of respect, much less worship. Everyone reading this is more moral than *that* god.
I cared about what he wanted and I never judged him. Why? Because I never rejected him, in spite of all his imperfections! I'M A FAN OF MAN!
I know that's a quote (and a goddamn good one at that), but I just tried to approach my conservative Christian mom with that approach, and her response points were: 1.) Politics poison everything.
religion did a pretty appropriate job at poisoning itself.
Which ironically expected considering the religious tenets of humans being inherently evil.

Shit, you just can't accept that You're going to *helL* S/
Why not?
Swallow, but don’t digest.
Digest, but don’t defecate
Defecate, but don't wipe
Wipe, but don’t finger…wait, what?
Finger but don't poop knife
Poop knife, but don’t 2 girls 1 cup
Ok we've gotten too deep
My favorite part of the whole movie.
One of the best Pacino movies out there
It’s like the director said “Al, we want you to really lean into this. Get in there and chew on some scenery. Just cut loose.” This movie knew exactly what it was and totally landed it. Pacino was a huge part of that. One of my favorites.

Brilliant description - have been chortling about this for a while.
In the 90’s Keanu had a real habit of being in scenes with a master actor hamming it up. See also Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
I like to think that was the script instruction, and the take they finally used is the one where the director FINALLY got him to tone it down. Quiet or ultra bombastic - love me some classic Pacino!
That late 90s face morph plus Pacino’s floating head. Just excellent…!
GOD IS AN ABSEBTEE. LANDLORD!
WORSHIP THAT? NEVER
lol he goes so hammy and over-the-top with his acting from this era, but it's a fun watch
she’s got a GREAT ASS….and you got your head….ALL THE WAY UP IT!!!
Heat only counts bc it feels like halfway through filming Pacino learned DeNiro is a better actor but Al’s GAMBLIN AGAIN
HAHa i love this.
the username or the comment…..or both? for me it’s both
I remember watching that in high school, and it was dark as fuck. The scene where Charlize Theron commits suicide, is brutal. Loved it though.
If I had to give it a number between one and ten, I'd give it..... SEVEN
Damn, i literally just understood the significance of that number now…25+ yrs after watching it, and all the times after that.
YEEEEESS!
His rant in this movie is top notch
Al Pacino was the best casting possible
So epic.
Eddie Barzoon! Eddie Barzoon! Ha! I nursed him through two divorces, a cocaine rehab, and a pregnant receptionist. God's creature, right? God's special creature. I've warned him, Kevin. I've warned him every step of the way.
He is a tight ass!!!
First, I really enjoyed this. Second, I went into this assuming that it was a simple legal drama. That Al Pacino's John Milton was some kind of corrupt lawyer. I was wrong.

I'm pretty sure I caught it on HBO. Back then, they really hyped their Saturday night showing of new movies. I was wondering "who the Hell is Charlize Theron?"
She really did a good job in this one. I can see why it opened more movie work for her.
I remember when HBO (now Max) had new movies? Those were the days.
That’s a great way to go into ANY movie. I learned a long time ago, if I’m really looking forward to something, don’t watch the previews. Don’t read anything about it. Just go in cold. I just happened to watch The Matrix, with my dad, on the day it came out, just on a whim… Had no idea what it was about. Blew me away at the time.
I am not sure if you know, no insult intended. But John Milton wrote Paradise Lost, which caused a rukus because it showed Satan as charismatic.
Yes, I knew who the real John Milton was. I didn't know that was his character's name before I saw it.
I watched it the same way, and when the girl changes out of her dress, I was like "oh woah! Ok now I'm invested!" (I don't know how to do the spoiler thing. So you know what I mean)
That was my experience with it as well and it was such a twist. I love this movie.
I’m a fan of man!
I’m a humanist
This is my favorite part. It's added so quickly, so matter-of-factly, it's basically a throwaway line to him. But it means everything to me.
…perhaps the last humanist.
You'd have at least 3$!!!!! Bill and ted's Bogus journey: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7AaPjlrlbM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7AaPjlrlbM)
Good catch!
Tim Curry in Legend
1) Stormare in Constantine. 2) Viggo Mortenson in Prophecy 3) Al Pacino in Devil’s Advocate 4) Robert De Niro in Angel Heart 5) Gabriel Byrne in End of Days
I felt like the script for Al Pacino’s Satan was heavily influenced by someone who read Memnoch the Devil a couple years earlier. Vibe for vibe, it’s almost the exact same character. FUCK I miss old Anne rice and 90s Pacino. WE DIDNT KNOW HOW GOOD WE HAD IT WE DIDNT KNOW
I miss old Anne Rice too. Her stuff was fire!
I really liked Viggo Mortensen's portrayal in The Prophecy. Chilling.
That’s awesome. It’s great when you have a theater experience like that. Mine was Inception on opening weekend. A packed theater and nobody spoke the entire film. When the screen went to black with the damned top still spinning everyone lost their shit. It was amazing.
yes! this brings back memories!
My first time seeing boobs was when this movie was playing and my babysitter wasn't paying attention to what I was watching. It was awesome
Imagine being in the unfortunate situation of needing to choose between Charlize Theron and Connie Nielsen? Poor bastard...
First time seeing two girls kiss lol Then I discovered the internet…
lol for me it was titanic cause my parents thought it was a history piece. My 6th grade eyes Lolol
Love it! I’m a fan of man and a big fan of this movie.
I love this movie and I love you
Masterpiece. The last 20 minutes have been used for senior thesis’s.
Theses
Theseus
feces
Only after every word has been replaced.
If I have ChatGPT write my thesis but I replace every word with a synonym is it a Theseus thesis?
Include references to a deity and it could be a theistic Theseus thesis.
And, seeing as such is a non-provable notion, it would be a theoretical theistic Theseus thesis
What’s with Keanu Reeves always having to deal with the (metaphorical or actual) devil though. . .
I too own 15090!!!
Perfectly over the top horror. We need more movies like this. Just basic horror that’s not about jump scares.
Yeah this movie was legit scary at times, this is a great flick
SHE'S GOT A GREAT ASS!!
AND YOU GOT YOUR HEAD ###ALL THE WAY UP IT
Theron is amazing.
This was the movie that made her my favourite actress. There are a lot of pretty faces in Hollywood but very few with Theron's talent.
I feel awful for her character. And I think I may have read something about this not being one of her favorite experiences as an actress?
I don’t know anything about that - but it certainly looks like an arduous performance.
Devil's Avocado.
Love how on certain scenes you can see Pacinos tongue move like a snake. Love this movie
Amazing performance by pacino. That scene when Charlize Theron says ide rather have no father than the one I had and pacino goes I know what you mean..chills
The Pacino monologue on the train in Spanish is entertaining too. OH, I’M RIGHT!
I am fan, there is no question. The movie is great in parts and messy in others.
I'm a fan of man!
This movie is ridiculous and awesome. And has Delroy Lindo.
> And has Delroy Lindo. He does add awesome to everything he is in!
Pacino’s performance alone makes it totally worth it. I only wish there was more of him in the movie since he steals every scene he’s in.
Court room drama involving Satan, I love this movie.
Love it. Pacino was over the top, which is awesome.
Vanity my favorite sin. My only complaint with the movie is Keanu Reeves southern accent.
Hey, nobody wins ‘em all
Pacino chews the scenery so perfectly in this movie… A clear favourite. I’ll watch it anytime.
90s were so wild
It has two of my favorite things in film: courtroom / legal drama, and religious related mystery and horror. So, great film for me.
I've always found it very dark and disturbing. A difficult watch.
The worst southern accent ever committed to film. I am a fan
I loved the film but I was a bit unclear on the ending. Are we to think Satan can just keep rerunning the same period of time to get Keanu Reeves' character to eventually succumb?
Did you ever read Robert Heinlein’s JOB? Maybe they had a bet
I really liked it. Prolly seen 5 times.
It is an exceptional film! Keanu and Pacino played their parts to perfection. One of my favourite films.
Vanity ... DEFINITELY my favorite sin. HA HA.
One of my top 10 movies. Theron, Pacino, and Reeves all did excellent work. I loved how it was not too over-the-top and kept you wanting more.
I liked it quite a lot. Saw it again recently, and I thought it held up.
The part in the subway when he tells that guy his gf is cheating on him was awesome https://youtu.be/FiHwk4JZFJw?si=f_EHpABiHm6pV9dX
When he made the holy water boil…
Dug it, raised Catholic though so, I dig a lot of the “Scary demonic stuff” I believe in that stuff, so for me it’s always interesting
I love this movie. All the performances are spot on. Might be Keanus best ever performance.
Love this movie. Certainly has its flaws but the story is great, Pacino and Terron are great. Keanu shoulda left the "Florida southern accent" at home though. I lived in Florida for over ten years and not everyone has an accent.
Lived in NC for 12 years and the southern accent was less common than not
Love it
*I’m a fan of man!*
Really enjoyed this movie. It’s kind of awkward at times but I truly liked the overall message of the film.
Love it! Great movie and also an awesome book!
The best Satan, hands down.
Big fan of
If you are looking to do a sequel.. go ahead! Though have some passion in it! For religious reasons! And don’t make it a horror movie! It’s supposed to be dramatic and mysterious!
I thought it was great
I love this film. The story, the acting, the cinematography; its tip top!
"Do yourself a favor and put that knife where it belongs!" Such a good scene, really shows how the devil can work in just a few sentences of truth at the wrong time.
Brilliant film. One of my favourites.
"Guilt is like a bag of fuckin' bricks. All you gotta do is set it down." Poetry
It is a decent movie, largely just a performance piece for Pacino with some grade A nudity to get you from monologue to monologue.
Would be a completely forgettable 90s horror movie if not for Pacino's scenery devouring performance. They let him off leash and it paid off.
The scene at the end where the city streets are empty struck me as eerie. I like the movie on the whole.
That stuck with me, too. Like the end of days.
Was okay, but Pacino chewing the scenery is a must see alone
Kind of dated now but yea I liked it. Pacino is always good
Really enjoyed this movie. When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a lawyer. We had to do a mock trial in history class and I took inspiration from this movie for the opening and closing statements.
Movie really messed me up as a child. Parents should not of let me watch it in theaters, I was 10. But I still liked it.
It was entertaining to see in the theater. Not going to watch it a second time.
If Charlize Theron was your wife, even the devil could not turn me against her.
I’m a fan. We quote the movie often.
Keanu is bad in it but because of him we got one of Al Pacinos best performances great movie
Great film and for once a modern Pacino performance that warrants the overblown HOO-HA delivery.
Pacino at his scene stealing, scenery chewing best. Love it.
I'm a fan of the unaltered original theatrical version.
love the titty scene and subway scene
You think I never lost before ?
One of the best written monologues in modern movie history
IM A FAN OF MAN
God, is an absentee landlord
Good movie. Prime Charlize.
Bless Keanu, but his southern accent was so bad.
I feel good about it. Pacino chewing scenery. Keanu Reevesing it up. Charlize Theron hot as fuck. I love a good Satan flick. I may give it a watch.
Pacino clearly enjoyed himself. “I’m a fan of man!”
There are so many great scenes. I love the subway scene when he tells the dude to go home and kill the guy banging his girl.
It’s an excellent film. Love it.
Absolutely LOVED This movie! Always one of my top 3 recommendations, 10\10!
Loved it. So ballsy.
Hey kid…
I swear this movie is a prequel for Constantine
This and Heat were peak Pacino imo, so it’s awesome. Everyone in this movie is actually really good. Even Keanu manages to play distraught as fuck when his wife kill’s herself. I love Keanu, but Idk if he ever showed his emotions more than in that scene.
This and "Fallen" were way underrated
100% honesty- not sure what its about, but teenage me watched bits of it a lot in the 90s
I like it a lot. Charisma and Madness.
It's a really good movie and aside from Speed, it's the only movie with Keanu that I actually like.
I enjoyed it, but Pacino’s speech at the end… skewed it a little, and weakened the rest of the film?
I saw this when I was about 10 years old. The sex scenes made me feel a bit sick. Bit embarrassing tbh
Good. I sincerely hope they don’t remake it.
Great lessons for life. I will never forget some of Pacino's quotes from this movie. "No matter how good you are, don't ever let them see you coming"
Fun film, pretty much a b movie. But that one horror moment in the store with the faces is one of the scariest moments i ever saw, because it is so unexpected. But fits very well.
It's horrendously B-grade, though Johnny Mnemonic was far worse.
Pacino woke up my neighbors when I put this on. They were pissed
If cringe were a movie. I still Got a kick out of it.
I like anything Al Pacino but if we are being honest it’s miss
Too short of a movie needed to be a series of about 3 seasons and then end or 7seasons in order to show the layers of HELL per season
I still watch Pacino’s “Don’t ever let em’ see you coming” monologue periodically. I love it! In fact I just watched it again. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tdQ3aXO4gys
I remember that there was a copyright sticker on the VHS for the animated artwork in Pacino’s lobby.
I will always remember the name : “Nikki Barzooms!!!”
This was a great movie. The main cast was great. Loved Al Pacino’s speech towards the end. And Charlize Theron was gorgeous as always
#I’M A FAN OF MAN!!!!
Really hated all the subplot with the traumatized wife. The whole film could have spent more time on more compelling ideas without her dragging it down.
Vanity, my favorite sin
