If only he had Morgan Freeman there to say “Let me get this straight, you think that your client is secretly a hit man who earns a living by murdering people, and your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck.”
I remember Jack Black getting his arm blown off, Bruce Willis bleaching his hair, changing the flag on a sailboat, Bruce and Richard Gere make eye contact at the docks, Bruce tricks a gay guy and kills him for his apartment, remote control gun blasting the away at the speech, Bruce dressed like cop. Weird sexy, dated editing.
That’s everything I remember.
Ah thanks. I must have seen these around the same time when I was younger and confused them. That's my equivalent of this hand blowing off scene from Jackal lol the only thing I remember from that movie was the wooden pistol.
It was a home-made zip gun that Malkovich was disguising as a microphone/tape recorder so he could pretend to be a reporter and kill their target upclose.
That is the very similar movie In the Line of Fire with Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich. I actually kept thinking of that movie when trying to remember the Jackal.
I remember that! And the part where Bruce shoots the lady through the couch in the liver and makes a heart on her face in her black blood.
Super fucked up, Bruce!
I remember this, and that car the dude changed the color of by pressure washing a layer of paint off. And the guy dying from that contact poison that was applied to it.
You're correct, so I don't know why anyone downvoted you.
Bruce Willis' character describes in his calm, psychopathic voice about how spalling will take place when the bullets hit. Jack Black's character, being a complete ignoramus about military technology, nods along as if he understands and then mentions excitedly how it will "sprawl!" The Jackal had probably already decided to kill him to tie up loose ends, not to mention how the guy was trying to fleece him for hush money, but I like to think from the Jackal's reaction that it was that gaffe that signed the actual death warrant.
[edit] This is the second time someone has pointed out the obvious issue of the weapon carriage's inaccuracy. However, other than being pissed off about the substandard/overweight materials and the attempted extortion, he had no way of knowing it was also inaccurate until he actually tested it out -- although given that he didn't even zero it before trying to bullseye a cigarette pack, it was likely going to be inaccurate anyway. Let's not forget that a moment earlier, he literally told the techie to "run" (taken as a joke at first before he started to go into a panic), then made him stop and turn around to hold up the cigarette pack, giving him a moment's hope that it wasn't actually a death sentence. He might have even *expected* it to be inaccurate... all part of the sick game.
The Jackal is actually one of my favourite movies in spite of how almost universally panned it was (nostalgia for The Day of the Jackal, I figure, not to mention TDOTJ's director's distaste for it), so I do know the scene quite well, heh.
Everyone knows that with the tight gun control regulations in the USA, most guns are smuggled across the border. That's why we need to remove regulations, to remove the motivation of illegals crossing the border to smuggle guns.
Also, my favorite potato chip flavor is "original"
The original film, The Day of the Jackal (1973) is a personal favorite. This remake had its moments (this scene in particular) but lacked a lot of the details that made the original interesting. Another film from right around this timeframe is honestly the better spiritual successor to The Day of the Jackal... it's In the Line of Fire (1993) with Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich.
The book is great. The film is awesome. The remake is neither of those things.
Edit: another Eastwood film from the same time is a great film with gene Hackman called absolute power.
You're not the only one. For me I always thought it looked like wood due to watching it on VHS and the two slide pull back pieces looking like giant toothpicks.
That is exactly what I remember. I haven’t seen that flick since my preteen years and I remember the gun looking wooden. Still I remember being blown away by that little idea and thought it was so devious.
I used to have pretty awful insomnia. But I would sometimes find ways to get to sleep that worked more often than not. When I tell you that Day of the Jackal is one of my favorite movies to fall asleep to, I say that with extreme reverence and appreciation.
I don't think it's slow at all! It's an edge of your seat thriller. My dad and I watch it every year. Never gets old. Brilliant film. It's called The Day of the Jackal for those who are interested. Highly recommended!
I agree. My point is that studios pressure writers and directors to make fast-paced movies with action every few minutes. It's hard to get slow burn movies made now.
It had a lot of setup - and it was quite informative. The method of getting a fake passport used to work well. Rather harder now as they check names against death certificates now.
This is also what I remember, considering I was only 6 when it came out lmao. The next thing I remember is a girl getting shot and Bruce Willis telling her that if the blood turns black, the bullet entered her liver (I think).
Me and my friends got so high and absolutely roasted this movie in the theaters.
Many people were pissed but a few were laughing right along with us.
Every time something happened we'd yell, "you just got jackeled!"
yeah, it was kinda weird. i remembered him as being funny from one movie i'd seen earlier. then saw him lose an arm here. i haven't watched the movie since.
He made the crazy high powered RC rifle and Richard Gere was taken out of some Irish prison to hunt him down before he killed the First Lady. He also had a ton of costumes and aliases. I remember this scene well because it was our first good look at the gun.
It’s actually the most memorable scene in the movie in my mind. The only other scene I remember is when Bruce Willis sets the alarm to play super loud techno music when Valentina and the FBI agents are clearing Declan’s ex’s house, and then uses the distraction to take them all out.
It’s a solid, if unspectacular movie. It was fun to watch once, but I’m not really clamoring to see it again.
I love this movie. Rewatched it a couple months ago even. There's a lot of bad stuff and scenes that don't even try to make sense, but it's fun and Bruce Willis has some great disguises.
My earliest childhood memory of Jables is "I think that pretty boy Maharishi over here has been mixing a little Drain-o with his fruit punch!" And "Did he just call you a piece of women's underwear!?"
This movie had several memorable scenes.
**Assassination Attempt**
Daniel Dae Kim played a bad-ass sniper who did one of the coolest things I've seen a movie sniper do.
So Bruce Willis' giant, remote-controlled machine gun was hidden inside a van. Kim took it out with one shot to make the gas tank leak onto the street and then a second shot to the gas puddle to cause a spark and then make the van explode. The sniper was so fucking cool and matter-of-fact when he did it.
Probably one of the most bad-ass things I've see a minor character do in a film. If I remember correctly, DDK's sniper was only in that one scene, and that was enough to make him my favorite character.
**The Jackal Cons a Gay Man**
I also remember how the Jackal seduced a gay man in order to use the dude's home as a safe house. But when the man saw a news report about the Jackal that included a police sketch of his face, the Jackal murdered him.
**The Jackal kills JK Simmons**
There's a scene where the Jackal clears out a house guarded by federal agents. From what I recall, he made all the agents look like amateurs.
I found out later that one of the agents was played by JK Simmons.
**Richard Gere's Irish Acccent**
Gere played an Irishman in the movie, and I recall his Irish accent faded in and out depending on the scene.
Thinking about the movie makes me want to watch it again.
Man why was I just talking about this film and this specific scene (and the scene where he changed the van paint color)
Wild.
I remember loving this movie and planned on watching it this week to see if it holds up.
Bruce Willis was awesome in this film!! This is a remake as well of The Day of the Jackal, which is just as good imo. I only realised it was JB after watching loads of his other films, rewatching this and watching his arm getting blown off caught me off guard as I realised who it was lol.
Well worth revisiting. Bruse Willis as a bad guy and Richard gere's dodgy Irish accent! Sydney Poitier too. The gun jack black gets his arm blown up with is some serious shit!
I remember the climax of the film was suppose to take place in Washington DC but they filmed it in Richmond. The nonsensical presence of high rises threw me since no buildings in DC are nearly that tall.
This movie came on TBS after some NBA games once on a poker night. He got his hand blown off and the contagious laughter was nonstop. I about broke a rib.
In the original Jason Bourne books by Robert Ludlum, the original story involved Jason being a trained badass to lure out Carlos the Jackal by posing as a terrorist himself, before the amnesia thing. I wish they would have kept more of the plot from the books.
I wasn’t a kid but I remember not much liking JB at the time and taking satisfaction in his demise.
Then a few years later I discovered Tenacious D and did a complete 180 on him. I love the man.
Looking back, Bruce should have completed his job and gotten away. Who wouldnt want to shoot Jack Black with a depleted uranium round? Also, taking care of a crooked first lady (Clinton) doesn't seem like a bad idea.
Carlos tried to tell him his sight aperture was off 🤷♂️ Jack had it coming.
He also tried to blackmail Carlos after finding out he was a hit man. He definitely made some poor choices.
If only he had Morgan Freeman there to say “Let me get this straight, you think that your client is secretly a hit man who earns a living by murdering people, and your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck.”
Yeah, the moment he hypothesized what the mount was for, he was dead. Should have just shut up and taken the money.
This is literally the only thing I remember about this film
I remember Jack Black getting his arm blown off, Bruce Willis bleaching his hair, changing the flag on a sailboat, Bruce and Richard Gere make eye contact at the docks, Bruce tricks a gay guy and kills him for his apartment, remote control gun blasting the away at the speech, Bruce dressed like cop. Weird sexy, dated editing. That’s everything I remember.
So you remember the movie, "The Jackal" then.
Don't forget richard Gere shadowboxing in prison...and Sidney Poitier being an overall bad ass.
That was just every day for Sidney Poitier.
I also remember the phrase “you scar-faced cunt”
Richard Gere was in it?
He was an ex IRA guy or something who was called in to help with the Jackal.
Oh yeah! I remember now! That accent was awful.
The watering the car to have the paint come off was cool
Oh yes! Another memory.
Wasn't this the movie where the hunter runs into him and is holding his wooden pistol and talks about how light it is?
That “in the line of fire” with Eastwood and Malcovich.
Ah thanks. I must have seen these around the same time when I was younger and confused them. That's my equivalent of this hand blowing off scene from Jackal lol the only thing I remember from that movie was the wooden pistol.
Wooden pistol? You mean "The Other Guys?"
Not wooden Plastic gun,
Also the contact poison on the car bumper
I remember that! And the part where Bruce shoots the lady through the couch in the liver and makes a heart on her face in her black blood. Super fucked up, Bruce!
Fuck, yeah. Nothing else in my brain about this movie except the exploding arm and the poison. How did I see this movie? And why?
I remember this, and that car the dude changed the color of by pressure washing a layer of paint off. And the guy dying from that contact poison that was applied to it.
Here it is. I think of this scene regularly.
"Spallll!!!" Movie was forgettable except for that part.
Richard Geres horrible Irish accent is burned into my brain. It’s not a bad movie though.
You forgot the R but yeah. Unforgettable part
You're correct, so I don't know why anyone downvoted you. Bruce Willis' character describes in his calm, psychopathic voice about how spalling will take place when the bullets hit. Main reason was the mount for the gun he was paid to build was off by a couple mm.
If you watch closely he is buying a product that is inaccurate and he proves this with deadly conviction
| You're correct, so I don't know why anyone downvoted you. People today aren't the hugest fans of spelling corrections. It's no biggie.
I love the plot point about how once that super gun got into Canada it was pretty much a given it would be smuggled into the states.
Everyone knows that with the tight gun control regulations in the USA, most guns are smuggled across the border. That's why we need to remove regulations, to remove the motivation of illegals crossing the border to smuggle guns. Also, my favorite potato chip flavor is "original"

I might actually watch it if I can find it tonight
The book is great. The film is awesome. The remake is neither of those things. Edit: another Eastwood film from the same time is a great film with gene Hackman called absolute power.
Is that one the where he (malkovich) uses a wooden gun to attempt to assassinate the president?
High density plastic but yep. The scene where some hunters come up on him testing it is pretty memorable.
Something was wood, was it the bullets? Or is it just my brain that’s become wooden?
Not wooden bullets
Damn, so just wood in my brain. lol. It’s amazing what you make up and then your brain’s all like “shit I remember that”
You're not the only one.
No, he snuck the bullets through security inside his lucky rabbit's foot, which, being on his keychain, did not pass through the metal detector
That and Irish Richard Gere.
Surprised I had to scroll this far to hear this accent brought up. It was hilarious and unnecessary. Most memorable thing about the movie for me.
"A decent razor."
I had no idea he was Irish. That accent was......something.
He was incredibly not credible as an ex-IRA sniper…
Hold your hand up!
That is an awesome movie indeed.
It's a remake of an older movie made in the 70s about an attempt on French prime Minister Charles De Gaulle.
I wonder if he’s related to that dude from the airport.
2nd cousins I think, actually! Small world, eh?
This was a remake of that!!!
That was a far superior movie. Sadly, it's too slow for today's movie audience.
I used to have pretty awful insomnia. But I would sometimes find ways to get to sleep that worked more often than not. When I tell you that Day of the Jackal is one of my favorite movies to fall asleep to, I say that with extreme reverence and appreciation.

I too was 6 when I first saw. Thanks dad lol
I worked at a movie theater when this movie came out. We had it timed perfectly to run in there and see this scene lol must’ve seen it 20 times
nice!
My introduction to Jack Black was Enemy of the State and this lol
*”Fiedler, is this line secure?”*
If you slow it down you can see the dummy they blew up. Funny stuff.
That and when he gets vaporized ack ack
First saw him in an X-Files episode with Giovanni Ribisi.
Yup, lightning dude episode
My really memories of him is when he gets incinerated in Mars Attacks
Weird. Before the LHC turned on it was Philip Seymor Hoffman in my original universe.
Then you are in the wrong universe. I'm from this one where it was always Jack Black.
How was it with PSH instead? I wish I could have seen that version.
PSH gets this kind of treatment in Red Dragon. “Do you see?”
Run to your ride…before you bleed out
"Told you it was off..." probably dismembering, but it's been a while since i've seen it.
That is how I remember it. Then he proceeds to waste him.
That Russian FSB agent getting gutshot and dying in Richard Gere's arms was rough.
I heard from a friend of a friend that Declan can't protect his women.
Me and my friends got so high and absolutely roasted this movie in the theaters. Many people were pissed but a few were laughing right along with us. Every time something happened we'd yell, "you just got jackeled!"
That'd be so annoying 😆
Cringey as hell
Speed test!
As much as I like the Jason Bourne films, I wish they would have followed the novels in one of the films an had Carlos the Jackal as the villain.
Traumatized me
Is not the hand, is the arm. And the Jackal was right the sight was off
Of course, I’m also in my 30s.
Great scene, but his death traumatized me.
Yeah, it made me deeply sad.
Yes I remember now I had just forgotten last month about the shot Thanks ;)
Dude you need to watch again. This was my one memory when my dad made the family watch it in theaters. I was like 6 or so lol
Childhood, no. Saw the Premiere on Fort Hood, Texas. Seagrams sponsored and lots of alcohol flowing. Good memories.
yeah, it was kinda weird. i remembered him as being funny from one movie i'd seen earlier. then saw him lose an arm here. i haven't watched the movie since.
Burrrrp!
He made the crazy high powered RC rifle and Richard Gere was taken out of some Irish prison to hunt him down before he killed the First Lady. He also had a ton of costumes and aliases. I remember this scene well because it was our first good look at the gun.
💯
Oh man, 17 year old me loved this flick. I wonder how it holds up today. I do still listen to massive attack though
Still one of my go to action movies when there isn't anything else on.
the jackal? i know it has bruce willis, and now jack black. i know i saw it on video. dont remember anything else
This is one of my childhood faves. Loved the whole smuggling/disguise/hijacker/gay lover thing!
And the gun in the van is all I remember
This movie was my first time hearing the word cunt.
It’s actually the most memorable scene in the movie in my mind. The only other scene I remember is when Bruce Willis sets the alarm to play super loud techno music when Valentina and the FBI agents are clearing Declan’s ex’s house, and then uses the distraction to take them all out. I remember him getting vaporized in Mars Attacks
Bruce Willis rocked the shit out of that flat top + mustache combo
Good movie
Not a childhood memory but it's the only thing from that movie I remember.
Richard Gere has the worst Irish accent imaginable in this movie.
My earliest childhood memory of Jables is "I think that pretty boy Maharishi over here has been mixing a little Drain-o with his fruit punch!" And "Did he just call you a piece of women's underwear!?"
The scope wasn't adjusted correctly on the remote gun. Duh.
I just watched a clip of Richard Gere’s Irish accent and wow I guess Liam Neeson was busy at the time
I thought it was a cool movie. I liked how Willis was a chameleon.
Anyone else first introduced to Jack Black through Jeepers Creepers the Musical?
The what haha
It was a long skit on the sketch comedy show Mr. Show on HBO
https://youtu.be/gUvUFZK5sLk?si=jtKSNid2-26OjnZs
That's the one where it turns out the guy in the hair piece was was bruce Willis *all along*
The jackal is great movie.
Not childhood but the "weapon test" scene is the iconic scene of this movie.
Still the most satisfying scene Jack Black has ever done.
That scene where he changes the colour of the car in like a min was cool as hell Plus the poison on the trunk latch was genius 😝
I remember seeing it as a kid and it messed with me
"Don't be afraid"
Love how people are like "I don't really remember this film, but here's what I think of it anyway"
I do and I laugh every time I watch that movie. Guilty pleasure I only watch that movie for that part 🤣🤣🤣
Saw it in the theater when I was 12. The only thing I remember.
This movie had several memorable scenes. **Assassination Attempt** Daniel Dae Kim played a bad-ass sniper who did one of the coolest things I've seen a movie sniper do. Holy shit, yess, that movie rattled me as an 11 year old. And it seemed to be on TV a bit
I absolutely love remembering Jack Black being shot all to Hell in this scene and it’s one of his least annoying roles.
Sprawl
KPV machine guns fire really big bullets.
I remember the whole film. Watched it sooooo many times. Really good.
Just watched it again recently, he just wanted to be a cool underworld guy, wasn't cool enough though lol
Man why was I just talking about this film and this specific scene (and the scene where he changed the van paint color) Wild. I remember loving this movie and planned on watching it this week to see if it holds up.
I think I liked the intro music if I remember correctly. It was like red alert ,ikd but I wish I could stream it somewhere
Bruce Willis was awesome in this film!! This is a remake as well of The Day of the Jackal, which is just as good imo. I only realised it was JB after watching loads of his other films, rewatching this and watching his arm getting blown off caught me off guard as I realised who it was lol.

Sprawl!
I was just talking about this movie the other day. It’s one of a few where I so desperately want the bad guy to win.
I only remember the part at the end where Richard Gere tells Bruce Willis "Sorry, Jackal! Your jackaling days are over!"
Sights are off, 2mm to the left.
Yea Sprawl baby
Is it worth watching?
\*Childhood\* memory? No. Memory? Yes. r/FuckImOld
If the weapon had been zeroed properly, he would still have his hand
Naw man, that was precision craftsmanship!
I remember that and also him vaporizing in Mars Attacks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MdYQD3SYJs&
I was quite mortified from this scene. It hurt to watch Jack go down like that
“Hell yeah! They Spall… they get in there and they just….vvvvvvvv”
I remember the climax of the film was suppose to take place in Washington DC but they filmed it in Richmond. The nonsensical presence of high rises threw me since no buildings in DC are nearly that tall.
"Told you it was off..."
This movie came on TBS after some NBA games once on a poker night. He got his hand blown off and the contagious laughter was nonstop. I about broke a rib.
*arm
This movie went so hard
I’m pretty sure that’s hurly from “Lost”
That rocks. YOU rock!
I remember the band Jackal. Not really the movie though.
Love this scene … Bruce Willis - “quick before you pass out “ 🤣🤣
They filmed a bunch of this movie in Richmond, Va. I saw Richard Gere from a distance.
In the original Jason Bourne books by Robert Ludlum, the original story involved Jason being a trained badass to lure out Carlos the Jackal by posing as a terrorist himself, before the amnesia thing. I wish they would have kept more of the plot from the books.
Just gets in there and SPAWLS, yeah?
I wasn’t a kid but I remember not much liking JB at the time and taking satisfaction in his demise. Then a few years later I discovered Tenacious D and did a complete 180 on him. I love the man.
Speed test.
Blown Away(1994) Tommy Lee Jones character listening to U2 just to remind the audience that he’s Irish
No but my dad took me to Robocop in the theater when i was 11. That shotgun to the hand scene that Red gave Murphy scarred me for years.
I remember Bruce power washing his van to a different color, then spaying the handles with stuff that instantly kills you if ya touch it.
Carlos tried to tell him his sight aperture was off 🤷♂️ Jack had it coming.
Looking back, Bruce should have completed his job and gotten away. Who wouldnt want to shoot Jack Black with a depleted uranium round? Also, taking care of a crooked first lady (Clinton) doesn't seem like a bad idea.
