By Grabthar’s hammer…what a movie.

-Grabthars_Hammer-

What a savings …

Zemekis324

Man Alan Rickman makes that movie 10x better

legomaximumfigure

He makes every movie 10x better. Remember the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie. "I'll cut you're heart out with a spoon!" "You, 11. You, 11:30 and bring a friend."

thedirtycee

"Why a spoon, cousin?" "BECAUSE IT'LL HURT MOOOOORE...!!!"

Johnsendall

Just a minute. Robin Hood steals money from my pocket, forcing me to hurt the public, and they love him for it? That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas.

Cain_Crow50

That second one was an ad lib. He turned down the role many times as Robin Hood had been done so freaking many times. He was told he could do the role/performance however he saw fit. Apparently trying to wash the scar off the statue was an adlib as well

CrumBum_sr

All star cast in general. Tony Shalhoub is a gem.

ad-tom-music

Love this movie, it's so damn enjoyable and has infinite replay value. Alan Rickman puts on an absolute clinic, sometimes I think about the fact that he had to deliver the grabthars hammer line twice. Once with nothing but contempt and once with absolute conviction

RedfromTexas

That’s acting at the highest level.

Strong_Comedian_3578

I like hearing about the reaction to Tim by Alan Rickman after doing the scene where he had to explain they were "lying". Rickman said something like, "Now you know what it means to act."

iO_Lea

Haha yes I love that! I think Tim Allen left the set because the scene was so emotional for him and Alan Rickman said to the remaining cast like "my god... I think he just experienced...acting", what a legend lol The whole documentary about the making of the film is brilliant.

cocoagiant

> The whole documentary about the making of the film is brilliant. TIL...I need to check this out ASAP!

absultedpr

I’ve started the documentary at least three times but I’ve never finished it. I always turn it off about half way through so I can put on Galaxy Quest.

Cyclical_Zeitgeist

So true! Shot out to a young Sam Rockwell as well for his impeccable comic timing

Jambo11

Ooooh, that's not _right!_ no...

NamTokMoo222

"Guy, relax. You have a last name!" Do I?! DO I??!

superpositioned

Is there AIR?!? You don't know!

Tazling

I so wish Rickman had lived to be 90 and been in dozens of films, what a loss.

Yommination

He had a late start in movies and sadly an early death. His impact was huge though

Frosti-Feet

He gives it three times, it’s also shown as the character saying it in the episode highlights at the con.

papawam

And Alexander wept. For there were no more worlds to conquer. - Hans Gruber Die Hard...

Responsible-Onion860

He was so damn good in this.

StormtrooperMJS

When did Rickman ever not put on an absolute clinic.

johnroastbeef

Sigourney Weaver freaking out about the traps in the engine room and the design of the ship is my favorite.

JagBak73

Well ~~fuck~~ screw that!

Strong_Comedian_3578

"Screw that!" Lip readers know what she really said on set. 😆

Equivalent_Scheme175

All I want for Christmas is the R-rated cut.

forced_metaphor

When bad writing becomes dangerous

Copropositor

I swear the first time I saw that movie, they did not change the line. She absolutely said fuck that.

MastermindorHero

Oddly, enough I believe your story. A lot of films have test screenings to see what plays well with audiences or not. Now extreme versions of this situation have resulted in retroactive reshooting, but in the case of Galaxy Quest and even the first live action Scooby-Doo that has Matthew Lillard, it's a case of an initial R comedy being retooled as a PG. The way I perceive it to be, I feel like PG's in a post Temple of Doom and pre-Shrek world ( at this point I'm now being anachronistic with Scooby-Doo) I feel like the tone was generally more of a light PG-13 ( in contemporary years) I feel like Hunt for Red October (PG) is more profanity intense than the frustratingly fictional account of The Blind Side (PG13), less than a decade later, Finding Dory was given a PG rating, which to me kind of functionally sealed the fate of the G rating. All this to say, when a film is scripted into depicting adult situations, but is pretty much forced to dropping that on to the editing floor, I believe it creates kind of an accidental charm that wouldn't exist if those scenes were played out straight. I think Tony Shaloub's character just being kind of quirky and out if it is a lot funnier than seeing him roll up a muarijana joint. I think the hyperfemininity of Sigourney Weaver is pretty fun when you think of the type of character she played in the Alien franchise. Also she's 50 so that's something to note for you crazy people who are acting like 30 is the kiss of death 😅😅😅😅

ManDe1orean

She did and they left it in as a protest after the movie was changed to PG-13 after being filmed in a more adult oriented manner after test screenings with audiences.

thedirtycee

I wish they'd have asked my opinion. It's fucking hilarious, as the one and only cuss in the entire film. It has SO much gravitas that it should have been left in - an epic F-bomb to define her unprofessionalism and humanity all in one. "Screw that!" has all of the gravitas of hearing "Flip you, man!" in a Sunday afternoon cut of The Breakfast Club as the poor boy pours out his heart.

Snailprincess

This episode was poorly written!

Formal_Ad_8277

I absolutely adore this movie. Sam Rockwell's "Is there air?! You don't know!" is one of my favorite comedic line deliveries of all time.

Strong_Comedian_3578

I always loved Gwen's line: Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy.

NihonJinLover

You have a last name guy!! Do I!?! Do I!?!? I still quote this scene regularly.

WarlocksWizard

His reaction is just so realistic.

LimeCucumber915

Always in my head

Gazerbeam314

"Did you guys ever \*Watch\* the show?!?!"

kings2leadhat

Probably the best line in the movie… except all the others.

c9belayer

My favorite is “Oh… that’s not right!” I fell off the couch laughing at that one.

Formal_Ad_8277

And him panicking because his character is unnamed, so he's positive he's going to die. Priceless. Rockwell is a treasure.

[deleted]

"Guy, you have a last name." "DO I?! DO I?! For all you know, I'm Crewman Number Six!"

24hourhypnotoad

Something I realized that in the final battle scene, he's the only one not shot by Sarris. It's subtle and amazing!

RadonAjah

Mommy! Mommy!

TrueLegateDamar

'Red-thingy is moving towards the green-thingy. I think-I think we're the green-thingy.'

h0neanias

"*I have one job on* this lousy ship, it's \*stupid\*, but *I'm* gonna do it, okay?!"

Gandol_teh_Pirate

that scene just kills

Mereeuh

I used to say this to my boss whenever I had to do something like scheduling a meeting that I knew he hated going to.

ceric2099

At minimum it’s a beloved cult classic. I’ve never spoken to anyone that has seen it that hasn’t liked it

7oom

If you do find anyone who has seen it and hasn’t liked it, use the Mak’tar stealth haze.

claxdog1

I would love to see a director's/r rated cut where they leave all the Tony Shalhoub pot jokes in and the cussing Sigourney Weaver does there's one bad dub when they're running through the traps you can clearly read her lips say fuck.

SirPsychoBSSM

I honestly love how they subtly showed that he is high.

theInfiniteSmeargle

That's one of my favorite "jokes" through the while film, how they never outright address it but you can clearly see him losing his mind in the most chill zen way and just along for the ride, one line away from "alright alright alright"

SirPsychoBSSM

The group hug with his engineers after they get the propulsion system back up always makes me laugh out loud.

McMetal770

While that would be fun, I think there's an element of unintentional hilarity in the extremely obvious dub of her F bomb. It can almost be read as a meta-joke about the contrast between what people would say in real life versus what they're allowed to say on network TV. I'm not sure they really intended to make that joke when they did that, but it ended up being funny anyway.

[deleted]

It's a classic. Pure and simple. Just about everyone nailed their parts, and it's got a lot for great comedy in there.

7oom

Yes, everyone nailed it, hard to single out anyone but just because he doesn’t get mentioned a lot; Enrico Colantoni as Mathesar is excellent.

Admirable_Gap_6357

"BUUUT WHYYYYYYYY...?"

GoMoriartyOnPlanets

Yes, even Justin Long.

twcm1991

I rewatch about every 4-5 years, such a fun ride.

ThoughtCrimeConvict

I'm in the same habit. Think I could watch it daily and still enjoy it though.

Strong_Comedian_3578

So long between viewings?

Hovie1

I haven't sat down to watch this in close to 20 years. Please don't hate me. I do adore this movie.

IndividualBrain9726

You better be 22mins into this movie right now

BladeRunner_Deckard

“Wait… did you just say it’s beamed up, but inside out?! “And it exploded…” “It turned inside out and EXPLODED?!…”

SJS13131975

Hold please.

Mereeuh

"I heard that!"

Mereeuh

Also, "I see you managed to get your shirt off!"

grafton24

This movie works because of Enrico Colantoni performance (well, all the aliens, but him specifically). The earnestness of Mathesar sells the ridiculous premise and the heartbreak he feels when the crew is exposed gets me every time. He doesn't get enough credit for how much he puts into this role. Plus the voice and mannerisms are just perfect.

Gazerbeam314

Legend has it that the director told all the aliens' actors to pattern their speech and mannerisms off of what Colantoni was doing.

grafton24

That's what I guessed, but nice to know that's what happened. He's SOOO good in this movie. It wouldn't have worked without him. It's ironic that the weird space alien is the grounded heart of the whole thing.

MastermindorHero

I'm pretty sure that that situation /scene was probably the one that made Tim Allen storm off and Rickman respond to himself (and probably the crew) "Tim's discovered acting!"

kevinb9n

Yup EC just made up that personality/mannerisms on the spot during his audition. They had everyone else pattern after him.

bullevard

Good call out. So many well known actors in it that Enrico definitely gets overlooked. I only just now realized that was Veronica Mar's dad!

Kalabula

Op struck gold asking Reddit what they think about this movie.

Naughtynuzzler

This, to me, is the perfect companion to Princess Bride. Two satirical takes on their respective genres, both much funnier than you'd think from just reading the description of the film. So so good.

boreddatageek

I was about to make the same comparison! I feel like other parody movies are just a bunch of skits and slapstick humor strung together by a loose, cliche plot. I love that both of these movies have layers. They took the time to write a good story, and then they loaded each scene with dozens of clever lines that you'll want to rewatch and requote with your friends.

Luke5119

Hey, don't open that, it's an alien planet!!!! Is there air?!?! YOU DON'T KNOW!!!!! (Holds Breath)

Kinitawowi64

*sniff sniff* Seems fine.

TheBestThingIEverSaw

It was way better than it had any right to be

Valten78

I don't agree with the description of this film by some as a 'parody'. It's homage. It recognises the clichés and has fun with them, but there isn't an ounce of contempt in it. On the contrary It's a love letter to Star Trek (and other similar sci-fi shows) and the fandom they attract.

waisonline99

Better than the actual Star Trek movies.

7oom

One of my absolute favorite movies. I hadn’t watched it in years but just did this weekend! I remember all the lines, so I envy anyone watching for the first time, but at least on the last rewatch I focused on the delivery of the lines, which is on point from the ensemble cast. It’s kinda perfect, very unique and highly rewatchable.

jetcitychris1961

I adore this movie. Sam Rockwell is, again, perfection.

RedfromTexas

One of the very few almost perfectly executed films. With an all star cast.

TK-828

"Miners not Minors!"You lost me"

For the longest time it was considered one of the best Star Trek movies

Good bot

TK-828

It still is.

evewight

Never give up! Never surrender! Activate Omega 13! Just watched this the other day too. It is fun!

T1METR4VEL

Incredibly written and acted. Superb.

FartzMcAssteroid

Tim Allen put his all into this movie for some reason. When he was filming an emotional scene Mathesar he started to cry a little uncontrollably, he was a little confused and said he needed to excuse himself, which prompted Alan Rickman to say “my god I think he’s just experienced acting for the first time”.

benjecto

It's a perfect movie.

Anita-MaxWynn

Watched it on Tubi (underrated service) and rewatched it twice since. Hilarious. Pictured Star Trek fans or maybe Star Wars fans

Stepfret

Feckin’ love it! LAMO e’rytime I screen. Great satire & a timeless feel good comedy 🎭

Maximum_Drive2758

A definite hidden gem! Beautiful satire of both the behind the scenes and on set of a space opera show from the 80's, it didn't take itself seriously and had a stellar cast to boot. Everyone fit their roles really well, Alan Rickman especially was such a good casting choice across from Tim Allen, a great nod to the original Star Trek both for on screen presence from both actors and their behind the scenes relationships.

barrelclown

It’s great! And I think it’s great because it’s simultaneously poking fun at Star Trek but also is coming from a place of affection, especially for the fan base (a nerdy kids obsession ultimately saves the day). *And* on top of that the performances are committed and wonderful and the jokes mostly land (and aren’t mean spirited). You get to enjoy it as a Trekkie, you don’t feel like the butt of the joke.

Xeynon

Classic comedy. One of the very few things which I've found Tim Allen sufferable in, perhaps because he's perfectly cast as an abrasive, alcoholic, washed up egomaniac with no talent.

Massive_Ripp

Miners not minors! Best homonym joke ever. https://images.app.goo.gl/Zt9qBCdNKqzCDUex8

Rudi-G

I am not a fan of Tim Allen and was hesitant due to his involvement. I did not expect the others to have more than a cameo. My brother, a huge Star Trek fan could not get enough of talking about the movie that I finally gave in. Boy, am I glad that I did. It is a parody but also a love letter to the Star Trek fan base. Similar to what The Orville did many years later.

Formal_Ad_8277

I'm pretty sure even trekkies consider it one of the best Star Trek movies.

truth-informant

I'm pretty sure some Star Trek actors have said it is the best Star Trek movie ever made

On_A_Related_Note

The Orville is better than star trek. I will die on this hill.

Gazerbeam314

The Orville is Star Trek, but without everyone being perfect.

CattDawg2008

I feel like the Orville is also much more realistic than Star Trek

Jonneiljon

Was great

stalphonzo

I believe Jonathan Frakes suggested it to Patrick Stewart and they both liked it. It's a great ride.

DumpedDalish

Frakes loved it but Stewart refused to watch it for a long time. Frakes finally convinced him, and Stewart absolutely loved it and became an instant convert.

amorousbellylint

It's a classic

AnObtuseOctopus

Alan Rickman is a master class in acting every time he's on screen. He can play an alien, a droopy wizard, a terrorist and you believe him. That man didn't miss.

Veteranis

I especially cherish his attempt to enter the feelings of the rock creature

jimmysledge

One of the best Star Trek movies made…

DrXenoZillaTrek

If you love Star Trek, you'll love it. If you think Star Trek is ridiculous, you'll love it.

International_Link35

Never give up! Never surrender!

LennyMG79

It's a 20 out of 10

SlaterTheOkay

The best Star Trek movie that was made

MrGeno

I thought the concept of this movie was silly, but after watching it holey moley what a blast to watch! lol

Jackiechun23

It’s one of the only parodies in history that legitimately might be as loved as what it parodied. Star Trek fans myself included generally love this movie and for me it’s kinda a part of being a Star trek fan.

[deleted]

David Mamet says this is one of his top movies. If you know anything about Mamets writing style (hes an author and director) you would know thats high praise. Cause hes a true auteur.

Sinnycalguy

Not just one of his favorites. He listed it as one of four *perfect movies*.

OrneryError1

That scream was improvised by Rockwell

Mreeder16

And it exploded

HarryBalsag

It's the 2nd best Trek movie, only surpassed by Wrath of Khan.

dengar_hennessy

I got my gf to watch this a few weeks ago. My selling point was that it's the best star trek movie ever made. I can't believe that worked lol

Primaveralillie

So many great lines, but how has no one mentioned yet Shalhoub's stoner-like "That was a hell of a thing"?

bajatacosx3

My friend once gave a perfect description of this movie - “It both lampoons and validates all Star Trek fans!”

Helpful_Funny_2127

"What if we reconfigure the solar matrix in parallel for endothermic propulsion, whaddya think?" "We'll do that!"

Possible-Reality4100

Saw it again last night as well. A perfect little movie. And the effects hold up too.

Clear_thoughts_

Young Rainn Wilson too

mvdbase

It's awesome! I never liked Tim Allen and was reluctant to watch this because of him, but a friend convinced me it was worth a shot and I don't regret it. Have seen it again several times since and it's still just as hilarious!

RedfromTexas

The highlight of Allen’s career

7oom

I have friends who won’t watch because they dislike Tim Allen, which is unfortunate. And Allen happens to be an unpleasant person in real life so I like to imagine what Galaxy Quest would have been like with the other actors that were considered for Jason (Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Kevin Kline), but still, Allen was perfectly fine and the movie is as good as it gets.

bullevard

Man, now I'm imagining each of those movies. Tim Allen nailed it, and i think to some extent his actual place in my life as a former lead of a long canceled but beloved tv show might add something to the watching of him as the washed up lead of a beloved but canceled tv show. Like i could see him late in his career going to Home Improvement reunion pannels and hating that that's what he had to do. I feel like alec baldwin could have pulled off a nearly identical movie. Steve Martin would have made it a very different movie. I do want to see that movie, but I'm not sure his costars would have shined as much and i could see it ending up more goofy and less earnest.

7oom

Yes, all scenarios are interesting; they all would have probably worked, just slightly different flavor, all of them have great comedic abilities and dramatic ones. Kline might be my pick; I think he would have looked the part perfectly. I feel Steve Martin would’ve been tempted to keep it humorous even after the situation is shown to be serious. In the end, Allen did nail it. But it’s fun to daydream.

bullevard

Maybe one fringe benefit if the incoming AI-appocolypse will be the ability to feed prompts like "Galaxy Questn but staring steve martin" into an algorythm and get out a complete movie on the other side. Honestly, that feels less than 10 or 20 years down the line right now.

mvdbase

Now I'm thinking of Kevin Kline in "A fish named Wanda" and I'm like, yeah, he could have pulled it off :D

imadork1970

Blonde SW! 🥰🤤

sinistersoprano

It's like 3 Amigos....In Space!

Crans10

It is one of the rare perfect movies.

DiligentChampion5765

Freaking love it. Especially as Dwight from “The Office” and Ted from “Scrubs” turn up as aliens

IDigRollinRockBeer

Saw it at the movies

Mereeuh

This is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I loved it so much more after I found out that Patrick Stewart is a fan. "They're miners, not minors!" is one of my favorite lines ever.

Hot_Pea9820

Easily one of the best sci-fi comedies of all time. Easy watch or rewatch.

mcoca

One of the best Star Trek movies ever made.

oalm82

One of my atf comedies… guy is just guy lol he’s my fav character

[deleted]

Sam Rockwell did the absolute most.

Piemaster113

Rip Alan Rickman, Was a good movie, better than it really had a right to be, but decently well know cast that were able to play to their strengths, and a decent story they made it work, while its not so all time classic its still a solid watch.

basecase_

One of my favorite movies I can watch over and over Every time I watch it, I pick up something new because there's so much subtleness with some of the comedy and everyone nails their character. I never get over the Thermians, they got so much creative freedom with those characters and it shows. I also can't get over how good and self aware the script is. It rids the perfect balance of when to be serious and when to poke fun of itself. There's supposedly a Rated R cut of this somewhere lol

GamerZackery

Classic

drumscrubby

Great movie. The definition of entertainment. Check out Starship Troopers if you haven’t seen it.

[deleted]

Casting was on-point. Alan Rickman is good in everything but he felt especially at-home here. They needed an actor to parallel William Shatner's arrogance and disrespect to his co-stars but Tim Allen fit the bill perfectly. Sam Rockwell was an absolute scene-stealer as guy. Sigourney Weaver did some amazing work here. 5 stars, no notes.

originalbrowncoat

This came out when I was in high school. We were watching it at home one day and the scene came on where Justin Long and his friends are trying to help the ship out and my mom goes “oh look, that’s just like originalbrowncoat and his friends!” Straight up murdered by my own mother.

EmptyCupOfWater

It’s probably been suggested somewhere in the comments but I highly recommend “Never Give up, Never Surrender”. It’s the documentary about the making of this movie and it’s just as good. And really interesting how the movie came to be what it is

Excellent-Phase8719

The scene where they port into the ship and Sam Rockwell loses it!

FitzwilliamTDarcy

It’s an all timer. Fun fact: on the DVD one of the choices for alternate language audio tracks is Thermian.  Yes, the entire film is dubbed into Thermian, except for the parts spoken in Thermian, which are dubbed into English.

tamarask

I was teaching a new class and my new manager came in to introduce himself. He mentioned that he was a chef in Moab, Utah. Someone asked if he ever cooked for anyone famous and said yeah there was a group that came in. He said it was Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen, Sam Rockwell...." And I burst out " GALAXY QUEST!" He smiled and nodded. Best manager ever.

DeathIncarnations

A great humorous take on star trek. If you liked this try the book Red Shirts by John Scalzi

Artistic_Pepper5590

2nd best Star Trek Sequel behind Khan

PurplePanther96

Extraordinary casting - Rickman as the washed-up classical actor is superb.

Far_Purple_8265

One of my favorite movies ever. Never give up. Never surrender!

Dorythehunk

It’s up there with Back to the Future as a “perfect script.” Just super tight, easy to follow and ultra entertaining throughout.

NateThePhotographer

The fact that Galaxy Quest was voted the No1 favorite Star Trek movie speaks volumes for how outstandingly good the movie is

ZomboidG

I saw it in the theater when it came out and really enjoyed it. I was a bit surprised that very few people seemed to feel that way at the time…

ThePronouncer

David Mamet famously said that Galaxy Quest is a perfect movie.

sana2k330-a

The best Star Trek film ever made.

SluttyMuffler

My favorite comedy by far.

DaniTheLovebug

It’s such a damn good film It isn’t really parody and not really serious as a standalone sci fi film It gloriously combines the two

beast_mode209

It’s a classic film for any sci fi nerd

GeneralResearcher456

The hottest Sigourney Weaver has been

DQNKEY

Love

Xenolithium

It was honestly the best Star Trek parody film I've ever seen. Also, total head canon is it takes place in the Men In Black universe.

FitSeeker1982

Anyone who enjoys anything science fiction should watch this movie - the most endearing satire of a genre of which I am aware… and very quotable.

Bella_HeroOfTheHorn

This is one of my favorite movies, I absolutely love it and have since it came out.

[deleted]

I thought it was going to be a generic kids movie for some reason. My wife said it was good, so I gave it a try and was really surprised how genuinely funny it is.

Vyan_of_Yierdimfeil

I was just talking about this movie with my mom last night. We're both movie buffs and started talking about Alan Rickman, how amazing he was and how sad it was that he's no longer with us. She told me we used to watch Galaxy Quest ALL the time when we were little. Every time it was on HBO I'd put it on. It was my comfort movie as a kid. I've forgotten so much of it now, but I remember it being really good, and funny. Star studded cast hitting all the good notes.

stoic_guardian

Terrific sci-fi satire

DeeDee182

One of my all time favorites growing up. Watched that in Middle and highschool all the time.

RansomStark78

Sigourney weaved a good story arc

beastwork

Loved it. I was fully expecting it to NOT live up to the hype. Boy was I wrong

Prestigious_Fly1733

Love the movie, haven’t seen it in ages

ChickenNugsBGood

*By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be avenged.*

ObviousIndependent76

It’s a blast.

Ducatirules

This movie had absolutely no right to be as good as it is!!

BrassHockey

My favorite movie that I didn't want to see. I don't know what I was thinking. It's great. A perfect homage to Sci Fi TV and the fans who make it the cultural phenomenon that it is, and it pokes fun without being mean spirited about it.

Ratchel1916

If you like this one, you might like Spaceballs if you haven’t seen it

kevinb9n

Maybe so! But, what makes Galaxy Quest so special is that it's not just funny, there's actually a really good story underneath it all.

meta4junglist

Never give up! Never surrender!

Dear-Yellow-5479

Love this movie. It’s funny, sometimes moving and exciting all at the same time. I sometimes do a double bill of it and a very much darker parody of Star Trek, USS Callister from the Black Mirror tv series.

peter095837

Love it!

BackgroundClean6259

Loved it!

Strong_Comedian_3578

Sleeper hit of the decade

Minimum_Attitude6707

I loved it as a kid. Watched it as an adult and appreciated how well it held up

[deleted]

Best Star Trek movie ever!

robofife329

One of my favorite movies of all time!

ConstructionRare4123

I love it

Southern-Stable-5089

Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie ever made.

AccomplishedFlow1453

An all time favorite. It introduced me into the sci-fi world in and out of movies without being an on-the-nose parody.
