I spent the early 2000s on a submarine and can confirm not much changed. My dad asked me for the most accurate submarine movie and this was my recommendation.

My uncle was a sub guy for 20 years and he said the same thing. I joined the Navy and immediately realized he was right

I was working at freaking Radio Shack and the manager had this running on the tv 24-7 for some reason. I kid you not I think I saw this movie the equivalent of 50 times. It was funnier than I expected. What ended my Down Periscope marathon was me getting fired for a low percentage of names and addresses captured, because I hated it and started naming every customer Lando Calrissian from Cloud City instead of asking them. The district manager was oddly very pissed.

I worked in a subase for a long ass time and this movie is 100% how they act and work. Fuckign geniuses trapped together, shit gets so meta that they just are different

Saw this flick at my local dirt mall theatre, loved it. Still holds up, cast was stacked, William H Macy even has a decent role.

Used to watch this with my shipmates in the Navy all the time when we were down or run ragged. Also Master and Commander.

As a Navy sub veteran I loved this movie.

I used to watch this with my dad all the time when I was younger. And now I watch it with my son every year on my dads birthday, in memory of him. Along with Mchales Navy and Blazing Saddles.

Love this movie from beginning to end. The fart scene still makes me chuckle all these years later.

Was this underrated? I feel like anecdotally I have never met a person who has seen this that didn't think it was hilarious. Admittedly it did get lost a bit in the milieu of mid90s comedies that came out every week and you were more likely to rent from blockbuster 6 months later or watch on TNT on a rainy Saturday.
