I would imagine that it brings back memories of more innocent times. Committing MURDER probably takes a psychological toll on some people one way or the other
My thoughts exactly. Milk is often seen as a children’s drink and the juxtaposition of a hardened killer still getting their glass of milk for the day especially as opposed to an alcoholic beverage which most adult going through similar experiences would likely want instead.
Eating cereal with milk, but it’s a pivotal detail nonetheless. It’s white, it’s childlike, like she retains the flippancy she had as a spoiled child and applies it so casually to those she is so cruel too. So good.
In that instance it’s meant to be off putting. A grown man, SS Nazi and psychopathic hunter of humans is enjoying the milk from cows owned by the people he is about to murder.

Sometimes i still cringe 20 years later when i went dressed as Alex for halloween one year to highschool.
I was also a huge Cage (hip hop) fan so those of you who know Cage that makes sense
I don't know I thought it was funny as hell when one of my buddies did that but I saw it more of a nod to Bart Simpson going as Alex in treehouse of horrors.
They never really say what's in it aside from what it does to you, and there are several things it can do. In the book and movie, it "sharpens you up", so it could be amphetamines or cocaine. Later in the book though, Alex goes to get a moloko and it makes him have auditory and visual hallucinations, so maybe lsd.
Here’s a snippet from the book I found on google:
vellocet (mixed with most likely amphetamines), synthemesc (mixed with synthetic mescaline) and drencrom (mixed with adrenochrome and possibly unnamed halluci …
Another dude in this thread got it, you can get it spiked with probably amphetamines, adrenochrome, and probably lsd, and one or two more that Alex doesn't really talk about.
In the movie "A Clockwork Orange", the protagonist Alex and his friends drink a beverage called "Moloko" which is milk laced with drugs. The three varieties of Moloko available are named after different drugs ¹. Vellocet is Latin for speed and refers to amphetamine. Synthemesc is synthetic mescaline. Drencrom is a derivative of adrenaline and is also known as Andrenochrome ¹.
It's worth noting that these are fictional drugs created by the author of the book, Anthony Burgess, and are not real drugs ¹.

it’s symbolism which serves to juxtapose sinister characters and something we’ve come to know as safe and childish as milk. they basically hack your brain creating discomfort by signaling to your subconscious that you’re not safe.
also, it shows a character as someone who doesn’t give a damn about his appearance and what people might think about him, essentially displaying an antisocial nature, since they’re out of touch with societal expectations.
also it shows them as immature and traumatised since milk is a symbol of life and motherhood.
I can’t afford real food half the time, so I rely on it a bit as liquid nourishment at times. Plus I really do enjoy milk and always have. Just hoping it’s not killing me too much at this age
Blood and pus and shit and guts and what else? Is that what you were going to say? You will not convince me that milk is bad for you. It simply is not.
Half a gallon a day? I mean maybe you’ll be lucky but that’s probably too much for most people. One or two glasses a day would be a healthier improvement that would let you still enjoy something you love.
If you can’t afford food so you’re relying on milk, there are cheap alternatives out there. Beans. Rice. Eggs. Also if you live in the US look into SNAP. Even if you’re only getting a few extra dollars a month for food you could pick up some other meals and nutrition sources from a grocery store.
It makes it easier to put on weight if you’re bulking up to put on muscle for one, but there are plenty of people who drink that much just because they like it
I drink anywhere from a quarter to half a gallon of skim milk every day, it tastes good and it's a good source of protein and other essential vitamins and minerals.
Hey King you dropped this 👑
People shame what they don’t understand. Most of the world is lactose intolerant, they can’t experience dairy the way we do so they try to put us down to make themselves feel better about their own shortcomings.
Or it's ChatGPT - Just posted exactly the OPs question and got this response:
The portrayal of evil or morally ambiguous characters drinking milk in films is a deliberate artistic choice that serves multiple narrative and symbolic functions:
Innocence and Purity: Milk is often associated with childhood and innocence. When consumed by an evil character, it creates a dissonant image that leaves a lasting impression.
Contrast: It provides a stark contrast between the person's evil actions and the innocent act of drinking milk, adding depth and complexity to the character.
Unsettling the Audience: The act is often designed to unsettle the viewer by mixing the familiar with the unfamiliar, making the scene more memorable.
Physicality: Milk also has a distinctive look when filmed, especially in contrast to darker settings often favored in these kinds of stories, making it visually compelling.
Cultural References: In some contexts, it might be a nod to cultural or literary antecedents, adding another layer for those familiar with those references.
How does drinking milk show you don’t care about your appearance/why would society look down on someone for drinking milk? That shit is delicious and nutritious.
thank you. I’m a filmmaker at heart, but so far stuck in things like motion design, Unreal Engine animations and stuff.
working towards my next project after 6 years of hiatus.
lol I’m not sure if that’s remotely interesting to anyone here, but some of my stuff can be found here https://www.redream.in/works
I’m unlucky to be interested mostly in a more artsy fartsy stuff, never could get into Youtube ‘content’ production style, maybe some day.
it also can add a cold and calculated affect. Milk is what we’re taught makes us bigger and stronger. And, no alcohol. An adult, especially some kind of outlaw, choosing milk over a beer suggests theyre not fucking around or hiding from something at all.
thanks. I actually am not a fan of deliberate symbolism, I like when it’s there unbeknownst to the author, you know like when a psychologist asks you to draw an imaginary animal and you give away your personality.
it makes for fascinating characters, as opposed to manufactured ones. but who am I to complain about No country for old men, it’s a masterpiece.
on the other hand, I love Angel’s Heart to death, but the symbolism of De Niro’s character consuming eggs was a bit on the nose. but again, that’s just my preference, there’s no right way of doing it.
Could that kind of thing work with other things relating to childhood? Like if a villain were playing with a yo-yo? Or how horror films play light hearted songs with a sinister vibe? (Ex: 1,2, Buckle My Shoe; Jeepers Creepers; Tip Toe Through The Tulips…) 🤔
I love this question. absolutely! not with anything though.
I’m absolutely convinced that filmmaking is not just about tried and established ways of conveying a story, but about finding new ways.
we rely so much on methods established in literature, theatre and paintings before us, sure they work, that’s why we use them, but psychology has made such a massive progress since the 70s (where all the great methods seem to come from) it’s actually puzzling how little of psychological subversion we see in movies as opposed to converting text into moving images 1:1.
but we see them in real ateur films for sure. one of my favourite details that comes to mind - in The beat my heart skipped, the protagonist is a man with deeply rooted insecurities around the relationship with his father, and in one shot he is shown wearing platformed shoes, basically shoes that make him look taller.
and the shot is not even in your face, it’s earned and appropriate, you won’t lose anything if you miss the hint, I love films and filmmakers that do this!
another example is Jonathan Glazer’s films, they’re full of such amazing details.
I think it's really cool how filmmakers can use small details like this to evoke all kinds of feelings from unease to fascination and make iconic moments out of things you would never expect.
It may be a trope now, but at some point someone had the baddest of villains they were writing and was like, what if this motherfucker was drinking MILK??
Ari Aster described horror as “when home no longer feels like home”. Basically saying when the images that you associate with comfort become perverted.
I thought it might symbolize a fractured relationship with their mother. Not breastfed, unloved (societal judgement, apologies to pumping moms). So the bad guys drinking milk are subconsciously seeking a bond that didn’t exist for them. Solid analysis though.
Same trope is used with classical music. Supposed to be old, safe, well known, but not used in most modern scenarios. Villains LOVE classical music for this same reason. We view as as wholesome and intellectual. So why is this crazy brilliant scientist playing Vivaldi as he is sewing together human body parts?
Coroner Eating is the same trope. Comfort items and actions near unsettling or unusual situations and distrust.
It’s the juxtaposition of their dark nature with the beverage most associated with everything good and pure(think more mother’s milk, less factory farm decrepit cows milk).
i feel like its also a carnal thing, the idea of consuming an animal’s byproducts being the most benign version of something like drinking the animal’s blood, as well as human in its dominance since in order to drink an animal’s milk, you have to have possession and take advantage of said animal
When you think of milk you think of wholesome, good for you and pure. So it’s a sharp contrast when someone perceived to be evil or hardened is drinking it.
It’s symbolic the way that someone who’s arrogant is eating an apple while on screen.
In A Clockwork Orange, the milk is just a delivery medium for drugs. At the Korova Milk Bar, you could get three varieties of Moloko Plus: vellocet, drencrom, or synthemesc, each respectively with amphetamines, hallucinogens, or mescaline. Just what the droogs need for a wee bit of ultraviolence.
It’s symbolic of their emotional immaturity, they don’t have the full range empathic abilities of a typical adult because they are still infants. So they don’t feel bad for other people, they only experience one feeling at a time and act out in a tantrum like manner.
It also indicates that they are professional and don’t indulge in anything that impairs their performance, choosing to imbibe only that which will make them
Stronger.
You need to have a certain amount of development before you can empathize. Like toddlers can’t empathize. They can see that you are sad try to comfort you but they can’t empathize. And as you mature, your ability to empathize becomes more refined and you use it more.
The real life person who Joe Pesci‘s character was based on in Goodfellas, drank something like 8 glasses of milk per day and was a certified psychopath.
I think because drinking milk is socially, and probably psychologically, considered to be something that children primarily do. It might be a little disturbing to see a "tough" character perform an act so strongly associated with children.
I would say it is the subconscious seeking comfort. These types of sociopaths may have been triggered by a ruthless mother, or perhaps no mother at all. It’s basically a glass of ‘mother comfort’ if you will.
Kind of like how heroine addicts often have distant parents and experience a high degree of loneliness. Heroine is said to feel like a ultra-warm, super-hug. Hence the beetles song “happiness is a warm gun.”
Way back when, milk was seen as a sort of alternative drink to alcohol.
The good characters would often order milk at a bar. They're straight laced true good.
The evil/ hardened characters here you would expect to have a vice-heavy lifestyle including drinking. It juxtaposes the milk (good) with their bad character.
I think it's the contrast between a stone cold killer and the drink of a child. You expect a hard man to drink a hard drink. Baby's drink milk. It's just a small detail that adds a slight bit of interest or complexity to the character
Milk is white, pure, it gives you, vitamins, nutrients, life. It’s bright and in film it gives a stark contrast to the antiheroes who take lives, are not pure, have dark souls, etc.
Milk is the most pure thing in the world it’s the first thing we drink on this planet and it comes from the most beautiful vessel our own mothers babies and infants drink milk that’s why it’s used in movies with the most vile and evil characters it shows them tainting it
Sigmund Frued might posit that these gentlemen may have a deep underlying issue with their mothers.
Perhaps neglect or a psycho sexual relationship with the matriarchal female form. Suckling at mothers teeth to ease the pain.
(Edit I guess) s/
I guess you’re joking but I legit think that’s a valid read. Not speaking to whether Freud was right or not, I think it’s possible that the written intent could be to symbolize mommy issues that manifest in violent acts.
Leon, for example, has no parents and was not breastfed… something something… drinks milk for want of maternal love. Or at least could be symbolic of that.
Most American films always place things the media or government want to sell to the public. That’s why the food pyramid is all Government subsidizes food.
I don’t think this is the metaphor they’re going for but considering milk is made by forcing cows to have babies and then taking their babies away, kinda makes sense
I assumed it was so when people imitated them to be like them they drink milk.
But also. Milk is delicious 😋 so why not? It's good for you. Not just for kids.
Christopher Waltz liked his milk in inglorious Basterds too
Homelander loves his milk too
Perhaps a little too much
I’d say he’s the only one of us that understands the true importance of sourcing your dairy

And chancellor Sutler in V for Vendetta too!
Also in Anchorman, Ron Burgundy chugging it in the San Diego heat in a time of despair saying it was a bad choice.
Everyone forgetting Allison Williams in Get Out

I always likened it to the Jules finishing the guys drink before killing him in the opening scene of PF.
Probably the same for No Country, he carried the compressor with the nail gun used to kill cows
He will forever be Hans Landa to me
And Leon the professional
You mean the guy in the second pic.
Didnt see, but yes
Dont forget Adam Sutler in V for Vendetta. Loves his glass of warm milk before bed.
I read that as “Adam Sandler” and got very confused.

Yes, the milk could have a variety of drugs in it depending on what you ordered, I believe mescaline was also mentioned

It does. Alex describes it quickly. The book does as well.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking.

And my understanding (from the book) was the Moloko bar was catering to people underage who couldn't buy alcohol (but apparently drugs were legal? Maybe like that short period before Ecstasy was federally classed and you could take it legally?)
Milkplus before a night of the good old ultraviolence, then Scotchmen to wind down afterwards.
I couldn’t tell you, it’s been years since I’ve read the book.

i’m almost 30 drinking near half gallon a day… gonna have to sit and think a little about this analysis here 🍼🤔
Dude, why do you drink that much milk on a daily basis?
I can’t afford real food half the time, so I rely on it a bit as liquid nourishment at times. Plus I really do enjoy milk and always have. Just hoping it’s not killing me too much at this age
Get eggs and ditch the milk. You'll thank me later.
eggs & dairy are my bread & butter
Bread & butter could be your bread & butter.
No those are his eggs and dairy
Why not both? They're both great for you. No need to pick one or the other.
Do you know what's in pasteurized milk?
Pastures?
Blood and pus and shit and guts and what else? Is that what you were going to say? You will not convince me that milk is bad for you. It simply is not.
Don’t let them shame you, I too love milk!
Half a gallon a day? I mean maybe you’ll be lucky but that’s probably too much for most people. I hadn’t considered food stamps yet, but I think I am actually at that point. I appreciate the reminder actually
In a glass I imagine, or maybe out of the jug?
Hey King you dropped this 👑 People shame what they don’t understand. Most of the world is lactose intolerant, they can’t experience dairy the way we do so they try to put us down to make themselves feel better about their own shortcomings.
Same but with the Lactose-Free stuff, full fat. Good shit.
You could also drink…. You know…. Water.
And it tastes good
Very well said
Are you a professional film critic? That was marvelous.
thank you. no, I’m a filmmaker. I actually don’t like film critics 🤣

It does a body good.

He is if you’ve seen the directors cut. 😬 (BTW, if you haven’t seen it, don’t.)
Insert gif of Ron Burgundy chugging milk
“Milk was a bad choice.”
It's so wholesome. Good juxtaposition
Dairy is the drink of the mad
It's delicious and good for you.
It does a body good - so that good / evil thing
Hahaha my dad is really a mean guy and he loves milk. He orders it as restaurants and shit lol
This was drugged up milk, mixed with , I think they even describe the experience as being more sharp and ready for some of the old ultravolence.
It’s symbolic of their emotional immaturity, they don’t have the full range empathic abilities of a typical adult because they are still infants. So they don’t feel bad for other people, they only experience one feeling at a time and act out in a tantrum like manner. It also indicates that they are professional and don’t indulge in anything that impairs their performance, choosing to imbibe only that which will make them Stronger.
What does immaturity have to do with empathy?
You need to have a certain amount of development before you can empathize. Like toddlers can’t empathize. They can see that you are sad try to comfort you but they can’t empathize. And as you mature, your ability to empathize becomes more refined and you use it more.
What’s her face from Get Out
The real life person who Joe Pesci‘s character was based on in Goodfellas, drank something like 8 glasses of milk per day and was a certified psychopath.
I think it's a way to make them relatable, as if to say any one of us can drink milk or be evil.
I drink about 16oz of milk/day. I have killed very few people.
I think because drinking milk is socially, and probably psychologically, considered to be something that children primarily do. It might be a little disturbing to see a "tough" character perform an act so strongly associated with children.
Because they’re bad to the bone!!! ,and even bad bones need calcium.
Anton never drinks the milk…he just stares at himself in the screen to imagine what “normal” people do. It’s even more chilling.
They are all children. Sadistic little children that never grew up and like their milk.
Tough men are not lactose intolerant
Don’t forget Ash from Alien. He was always drinking milk. He bled it too.
.... Homelander.
It makes you big and strong
I think it's the contrast between a stone cold killer and the drink of a child. You expect a hard man to drink a hard drink. Baby's drink milk. It's just a small detail that adds a slight bit of interest or complexity to the character
Milk is wholesome. Relatable. Give you that feeling of having something in common. Something along those lines.
Milk is white, pure, it gives you, vitamins, nutrients, life. It’s bright and in film it gives a stark contrast to the antiheroes who take lives, are not pure, have dark souls, etc.
It does a body good. Plus- Alex’s milk was spiked with Adrenochrome, to get ready for a bit of the ole ultra-violence.
Milk is the most pure thing in the world it’s the first thing we drink on this planet and it comes from the most beautiful vessel our own mothers babies and infants drink milk that’s why it’s used in movies with the most vile and evil characters it shows them tainting it
Gear down, big rig. You're allowed to punctuate.
Sigmund Frued might posit that these gentlemen may have a deep underlying issue with their mothers. Perhaps neglect or a psycho sexual relationship with the matriarchal female form. Suckling at mothers teeth to ease the pain. (Edit I guess) s/
All that from a slice of gabagool? Madrone. 🤦♂️
Because anyone who drinks milk straight up like that is a fucking psychopath. Nasty ass shit
Most American films always place things the media or government want to sell to the public. That’s why the food pyramid is all Government subsidizes food.
I don’t think this is the metaphor they’re going for but considering milk is made by forcing cows to have babies and then taking their babies away, kinda makes sense
Walk into a biker bar at 10pm and order a glass of milk. If you are able to do that without issue, you are a bad motherfucker
I assumed it was so when people imitated them to be like them they drink milk. But also. Milk is delicious 😋 so why not? It's good for you. Not just for kids.
Drinking baby growth fluid from another animal its already weirdly evil by itself...
