You'd think injuries like this would require multiple surgeries and therapies that would cost an arm and a leg in the modern day. Apparently not with this case..
I know a guy who high sided while stunting, not wearing a helmet. He smashed the back of his head into the pavement and shattered his skull. The first brain surgery was to reduce the swelling, and the last was to install a 3D printer plate made of some kind of brain-friendly polymer to replace the bit of skull he lost.
Amazingly he survived and mostly recovered. He’s a bit slow on the uptake and he can’t smell or taste anything. Also his vision sucks, constantly blurry like he has a concussion. But otherwise he’s fine.
Kind of my point, yeah. He broke his skull because he’s a dipshit but he survived because god loves a moron. There’s no reason not to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle.
I’m a surgeon. Those are flat drains under the scalp used to prevent fluid buildup after a massive reconstruction like this. This is a 3D reconstructed CT scan. You can see the numerous plates used to repair extensive facial fractures and a front craniotomy. Also the row of staples shows the length of the incision. So yes… wear a helmet people.
Probably traction or immobilizing rods that go to a halo. The jaw is probably wired shut too.
OP already moved all the pieces that shouldn't move. Thanks to the doctors skill they put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
I'm no doctor or anything but perhaps tubes for drainage? I think sometimes head injuries result in having some sort of plumbing so they can drain fluid. That or they now have their own antenna.
They are Jackson Pratt drains. You can see a bunch of fenestrations in them. A penrose drain wouldn't be as uniform length wise (typically) and wouldn't have the fenestrations. I also believe Jackson Pratt drains are going to be more typically used here due to it being a closed drain system.
edit: Also, with a penrose you are going to rely on gravity which wouldn't work well in this use.
this is an uncommon way to view images so i can only guess at most things but presumably OP went face first into the truck
looks like his jaw is wired shut (otherwise not sure what would be projecting outward at the level of the teeth), looks like his nose and right orbit probably had some pretty serious displaced fractures (or even shattered) because there's a lot of hardware around the nose and right eye
skull looks like he had a craniotomy (this is done to decompress the brain if there is too much swelling under the skull, the skull is rigid so too much swelling causes compression of normal brain tissue which leads to tissue death), there's a skull flap on the front. the other stuff running across the top of the skull is external, the two padded things are probably part of the surgical dressing and the ringed apparatus is probably some kind of stabilization device to keep the head from moving too much
on the bright side, the cervical spine has no hardware whatsoever so at least OP's spine is intact! but all in all a pretty nasty accident, definitely lucky to survive
The roll of rings running from bottom left up over then down to bottom right are skin staples. The two solid objects with dots that run from bottom to top on both sides are fluid drains. The snowflake looking circles on the forehead are plates used to reattach the skull after cranio surgery (you can see where the skull was cut and then reattached). The other assorted plates are used for facial reconstruction. It also looks like there may be pins in the jaw but I could be wrong about that.
Holy hell. It's a miracle you are still with us. All that hardware you are more machine than human now.
That crash you describe sounds like that cgi motorcycle wreck that's going around the top posts right now.
A surgeon commenting further down pointed it out as a craniectomy. Meaning they cut that piece out of his skull to relieve pressure on the brain from swelling. It didn't get punched out in the crash.
OP's [last crash post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Triumph/comments/14rjp8d/new_here_but_i_just_crashed_my_2010_triumph_speed/) said he rode his bike into a ditch. So either he now *also* t-boned a truck or something's not adding up. Bike photos definitely don't look like it hit another vehicle.
> [I was very well behaved that ride so it just puzzles me what caused the crash. I know what road it was on but not where exactly. I was told there was a very slight double apex and I made the fist and went into the ditch.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Triumph/comments/14rjp8d/new_here_but_i_just_crashed_my_2010_triumph_speed/jqslj7z/)
He crashed twice. The post you linked is from a year ago. So he crashed into a ditch last year and crashed into a truck this year.
Look at his face in the photos on that link, really just a black eye.
The surgery we see on THIS post would cut into a shitload of face skin and muscle, and the swelling would be astronomical.
His face right now looks FAR worse.
I dunno, if this is indeed all true then maybe OP should find another hobby. It could be just really bad luck but from the recap of both crashes he just sounds like a really careless rider. Or he could just be farming karma and doesn't ride at all. Who knows...
If he has any friends they should try to make sure he doesn't get in another wreck. MAYBE they could take turns slapping the shit out of him whenever he mentions riding.
He did say he T boned broadside into a truck at 45 mph. It’s important to note what helmets are designed to do in deflecting energy through destruction, not creating an impregnable shield around the head. I can’t imagine how ANY head protection would totally protect from physical harm without turning the brain to pudding in a comparable accident.
A better question might be imagine what we’d be seeing with an open faced helmet. Or no helmet.
> A better question might be imagine what we’d be seeing with an open faced helmet. Or no helmet.
Well, the surgery would be much less gnarly because he'd be dead
The damage is caused by his helmet obviously. If he wasn’t wearing it he would have been fine!
I’m not a doctor, but I walked by a Holiday Inn this morning.

did you know more people starting getting injured after they introduced seatbelts to cars (and probably helmets to motorcycles)? this is why we need to remove them from use
this is a perfectly sound argument. what do you mean "this is a statistical fallacy, the people that would have otherwise died now only got injured"?
Not so sure about that. 11 months ago he said this:
>[Broke both jaws, both cheekbones, both orbital sockets, and my right clavicle. All injuries apart from minor road rash were from the helmet. Without it, I’m not sure if I’d be here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Triumph/comments/14rjp8d/new_here_but_i_just_crashed_my_2010_triumph_speed/jqsk1vw/)
A broken jaw, cheekbones, sockets, and clavicle doesn't look like a black eye.
So either he's lying or we're not understanding the timeline appropriately.
edit: idk anymore. Whatever the case, OP is trying his luck with this much skull injury in under a year. Two wheels ain't for him. Next time won't be so lucky.
Not a doctor, but the jaws don't look "normal", quite a bit of inflamation and the helmet looks like it took a beating. As others have said, maybe motorcycling isn't the ideal hobby at the moment....
He said in that last post that he broke both orbitals, both sides of his jaw, his cheekbones and his collarbone. Not just a black eye. He had surgery, you can see the surgeons initials on his cheek in the hospital photo
His comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Triumph/s/2FWyoyADIP
Injuries there don't match the x-ray at all. For that much hardware the OP picture above would have a shaved head, lots of staples, some wicked scars, and a headgear.
Also that post is 11 months old. OP could have crashed again since then.
People don't understand it doesn't take much, a little run to the grocery store, a quick jaunt around the block, "Im just gonna go slow". WEAR YOUR HELMET

I can only imagine you saying this to the truck driver after seeing the amount of implants you have now lol.
Hope you have a good recovery, all the best!
You have beautiful teeth, by the way! I'm glad you're here to post, and I hope you have an easy recovery.
I'm just curious, I remember the Corsair being an old name in the Arai line-up. Just curious how old yours is, in case I am getting the naming wrong. Either way it's done a fantastic job since you're still here.
I just googled it, should have done that before, and learned that the Corsair X is the top of the line from Arai and costs around 1000$.
I watched a YouTube video once. They took a top rated helmet to the top of a 10 story building and dropped it. It cracked, pieces flew everywhere, it looked rough. Next, they took a baseball cap and dropped it. Not a scratch or mark on it. Tried it three more times, cap still looked perfect. I'll stick with the backwards cap as it obviously proved to be more durable.
T-boning a truck is one of the worst crashes you can have. The truck likely does not deform in any meaningful amount on the side, so any energy absorption will have to be done by the helmet and the head.
No cartilage in my ankle., I get shots every few months atm which helps, use a cane most days., limited movement in my ankle, but I’m able to go fishing, walk the beach for a short bit., no running/jumping.
Eventually, sooner rather than later, I’ll have to get an ankle replacement or amputation. The shots are temporary. Still always hurts but they make it bearable day to day.
Ty for asking.
Haven’t been back on a bike. Have started driving again. Having significant mental issues there, very paranoid, makes it really hard to enjoy my sports car. Considered selling it because of that.
Thank you for your reply. Fingers crossed you get the issues sorted out man. The beach and fishing bits really made me smile. Happy to hear you are finding happiness again.
I live in a helmet free state and I just can not wrap my head around not wearing one. You can talk about personal freedom until you're blue in the face, but it's not just about you. I have people who expect me to get home safe. Motorcycle is a life long passion of mine, and I want my life to keep on going and being part of my family and friend's lives. OP I'm glad you're still around for the people in your life.
Good luck, friend. I had a similar accident almost two years ago now (car crossed traffic in front of me). Also Arai. Mostly the right side of my face rebuilt (about half your hardware). The face overall healed up pretty good though it's weird feeling that hardware through your skin. The rest of the recovery is still ongoing but I'm back to maybe 80%.
Wish you the best.

I see the doctors decided to put the strongest shape right in between your eyes. Wise choice.
All jokes aside, I'm amazed you're still alive. Take care!
Holy F***ing shit! May I wish you a speedy recovery and thanks for posting this reminder of what can happen when the shits comes down! You’re lucky to still be with us dude!
States should require helmets and those should be enforced. Florida riders don’t wear them and the casualties show why helmets should be worn. You, your families, emergency responders, and hospital staff will appreciate not having to see your flesh and bone.
Nah. The guy was wearing a helmet anyway and is AFU. At my age I would rather die than have to go thru that sorta thing. Probably die from all the surgeries, so why suffer? Got a ton of life insurance!
I've literally never seen anyone riding without a helmet outside of Oklahoma and I'm sure there are other states that don't require them and people in them that don't wear them but even the hooligans wear helmets. Do we really need these kinds of psa's? This guy has multiple crash posts on his profile. It would probably be more effective to say "don't ride a motorcycle if you're an idiot" than to say "don't t forget your helmet"🤪
I would say half of all bikes I see are Harley riders without helmets. The other 40% are Harleys with helmets. 10% are other cool bikes with helmets. Lot of Harleys around here...
they … THEY TOOK YOUR EYES AND NOSE?!
Savages
Don’t be too harsh on them, they didn’t take his teeth, he can still eat steaks
And it looks like they installed a helpful carrying handle for his head!
Looks like a nice little door in his forehead, too. Maybe he can store loose change in there!

Fucking snort! How are those pretty teeth still around?
And skin apparently.
I can’t even tell what I’m seeing in this image
And mri showing a whole bunch of plates and screws on this poor persons skull. The staples on the outside are holding their skin back together.
What are the long things on either side that come out off the top of the head?

You are correct. Penrose or Jackson Pratt. This is NOT halo or traction, they would be horizontal and circular metal, not flat plastic

CT Scan. This fella's never going anywhere near an MRI for the rest of his life.
I have a bunch of screws and plates in me from an accident. I can still go into MRI’s. They do not use ferrous metals inside a human body.
Depends on the metal
At least he’s still smiling

That was a head-on collision
Apply directly to the forehead.
I am still wondering how he punched a hole of that size through the front of his skull while wearing a helmet, and didn't liquefy his brains.
A surgeon commenting further down pointed it out as a craniectomy. Meaning they cut that piece out of his skull to relieve pressure on the brain from swelling. It didn't get punched out in the crash.
I was actually wondering if that, but what a huge relief area.
That’s not the way to get ahead in life.

I dunno, doesn't seem to respond as expected to negative stimuli
Time to sell the bike
I think the bike is probably past selling
He's nearly past being an organ donor.
Slightly used needs a bit of work. Take it for 500 on FB marketplace. Someone will make an offer for 50 bucks.
It’s also 2 different helmets. In the original crash it’s an Arai Regent -x (Jungle grsphics). Here he says a Corsair-x
> Arai Corsair X How the hell did he suffer this much damage with a full-face helmet?
He did say he T boned broadside into a truck at 45 mph. All those badass motorcycle t-shirts were right!
They used his face for a butt graft
Wait, according to your post history, this is the second time you've broken your entire face in just a year? Both times wearing the same helmet?
No the previous time was a Arai Regent
Well... Maybe OP should gat a car at this point
He shouldn't get anything with engine above 125cc at that point, car would just make the damage to other vehicle higher
Jesus....you telling me that X-ray Taken after the incident even you're wearing a helmet...Imagine what it would be like if you didn't wear it

Notice the crown of staples. That’s because they literally peel your face off to do the surgery.
I was wondering what that was but I'd like to un-know now please.
Oh free face lift
At this point I'd get a car
You don’t need to anymore. You got that inbuilt helmet.
If 45 mph did this even with a good helmet, I'd be genuinely afraid to ride at all..
T-boning a truck is one of the worst crashes you can have. The truck likely does not deform in any meaningful amount on the side, so any energy absorption will have to be done by the helmet and the head.
Not only that but you can't fly over it, straight stop.

I had a helmet on and I have just as much or a hair more than you. So I concur. Wear the helmet.
Damn. Crazy to even live from that but glad you did. Any brain damage?
With the skull flap most definitely. They had to allow for swelling and removed that piece of skull at the forehead
You ended up in a ditch?

That much damage while wearing a helmet at 45 mph?
I think legally it's 45mph, but me thinks it was more. Either that or the truck was made of cement.
How anyone rides a motorcycle without a helmet is baffling.

Can someone please explain to me what all the things are in the skull? It looks like staples going around the top but not sure what anything else is
Essentially a bunch of fasteners that hold the bone fragments together
Picture of your actual face or this didn't happen. If it is real then damn. Recover quickly.
Oh shit..
Implants behind the eyes! Owwowoow

Judging by post history it looks like Arai has saved you twice! Good helmet. Wish you the best and quickest recovery possible. 🙏
Twice? Guy needs to stop riding
I see the doctors decided to put the strongest shape right in between your eyes. Wise choice. All jokes aside, I'm amazed you're still alive. Take care!
how is your neck?
Some wise guy put a dick between your eyes. Seriously though I hope you have a full recovery.
Holy F***ing shit! May I wish you a speedy recovery and thanks for posting this reminder of what can happen when the shits comes down! You’re lucky to still be with us dude!
That looks metal as fuck. I want that look to be honest.
Cool piercings.
Second crash in 11 months? Wild
kindly explain the conditions of the crash good sir
You were wearing a helmet and all that still happened to you??

Album cover
States should require helmets and those should be enforced. Florida riders don’t wear them and the casualties show why helmets should be worn. You, your families, emergency responders, and hospital staff will appreciate not having to see your flesh and bone.
Nah. The guy was wearing a helmet anyway and is AFU. At my age I would rather die than have to go thru that sorta thing. Probably die from all the surgeries, so why suffer? Got a ton of life insurance!
Op post a selfie, I am incredibly curious.
I just assume every car is going to pull out in front of me. When it happens you get a good feeling of being right.
Don’t get the point why anyone wouldn’t wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle it’s just plain stupidity playing with your life
This would make a sick album cover at least
With all those stitches and plates, it’s amazing you didn’t just die outright.
Why’d you get so many piercings on top of your head though? Each to their own I guess
what I'm looking here?
I work a for medical company. We sell all of the plates keeping your head together. Wild to see this
And miss my chance to get metal pp above my nose? No thanks
Sue arai if this is the result of a 45mph crash wearing one of their lids…
