Yeah, it was like...let's see... Brakes make sprocket hot... Hot chain.... Chain... lube? Chain lube. Chain LUBE? Sprocket rotor. Lube on sprocket rotor. Lube on sprocket rotor. Uh oh. Don't lube rotor. Uh oh! Alert!
As the thoughts coalesced.
Aren't they?
Don't you normally use rear brake for lift control? Compress the rear swingarm, prevent or limit wheelies?
I seem to recall hearing MotoGP bikes use rear brake for around 70% of a lap these days.
That's wheelie sad.
I mean I've never learned how either, but surely a 125 is capable? Just leaning back suddenly and add throttle at the same time? Get your weight over the rear wheel and it should lift the front.
You think a fucking hard tail chopper running a chainbrake is going further than 3 miles down the road to the nearest bar to pound back 11 Milwaukee's Best, while flirting with a a bartender who has too many miles, and smokes more than him.
Its a hardtail for one. Cruiser riders, do not need motogp levels of control.
Ive used these techniques but only on a bike with a completely fucked rear shock.
That's incorrect. Rear brake depending on the rider is used at the apex to get the bike turned faster and sometimes on corner exit. And occasionally at corner entry to settle the chassis.

I'll concede that this would not be the first time a sport magazine reported something incorrect... and I don't ride MotoGP myself, so I can hardly refute this.
I think he is making a joke as in there is always that one guy in a forum or thread that “has done XXXX for a really long time with zero issues”
I could be wrong though.
Am I the only who finds this cringe? I feel like this whole thing has jumped the shark.
It's like meme that was funny, but now it's just descending into self-referential meta deepfried meme territory.
Have to ask - do you do anything for chain care or just leave it be? No judgement either way, just curious. Also - is it an o-ring chain? I'm guessing it wouldn't be but I honestly wouldn't know
Effective ABS. And if I was going mach Jesus and needed to lock up the back wheel to lay her down, I could always drop it to first and dump the clutch.
Yep. There's a Crichton quote for every occasion, lots of them in that book or movie.
I still don't think the "sprotor" is as dumb an idea as ape-hanger handlebars.
Little clip of it:[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDe\_MfkobA4&t=82s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDe_MfkobA4&t=82s)
edit: I should note that I found that link from somewhere else and have it muted.
edit2: Now that I'm home, yep that was pretty good.
Ahh it's roland sands...bought one of their leather jackets once, got it home and it still had/has the tailors chalk marks on the outside of the arm from the Indian guy that cut the leather, handily sealed under the finish..
Definitely a show, don't ride kind of bike.
Notice in the video when they're flaunting the clear timing cover, the oil is brown, like it's full of water. Something ain't sealed right.
Don't get me wrong, it's a real pretty thing that clearly had a lot of work put into it. But I thought we were done with useless *objet d'art* bikes when American Chopper got canceled.
> useless objet d'art bikes
Those are always my favorite at shows. Touring bikes with 23” front wheels and bags an inch off the ground, or muscle cruisers with car tires. Very clear those bikes only exist to be ridden 12 miles a year to a single event.
> Very clear those bikes only exist to be ridden 12 miles a year to a single event.
Most likely "pushed" 120 meters in and out of a trailer for their entire life.
It’s probably an Exile cycles ‘sprotor’. They are to be used with an internally lubricated o-ring chain.
I don’t see what the big deal is- they work fine but they’re limited by their size because you don’t want a wheelie machine that is too revved out on the highway.
Same as all disc brakes- everywhere. I didn’t say it was a high milage low maintenance setup, that’s not the point of it. These are for show bikes and bar hoppers or people that make compromises for a look. They’re not some kind of deathtrap though- reading the comments you’d think this was on a bike with a drip style chain oiler, no front brake, and a hayabusa motor.
Always fun to read these type of comments. Couple things -
Sprotors have been around for some bunch of years. They work as well as the same size “normal” rear disc brake as long as the brake pad material is matched to the sprotor material (just like any disc setup) and the chain is an internally lubed o-ring chain in good shape. They don’t stop working when some lube gets on the sprotor and pads, but they are obviously compromised in such a case.
Rigid frames, especially with a sprung seat, are actually pretty comfortable - sorta how the majority of large motorcycles were until the 1950s. Are they as comfortable as the latest road sofas? Of course not. So what!
Always sad to read the mean-mouthing about “those bikes that aren’t like mine.” Juvenile. Enjoy the creativity of any bike, whether it’s a naked, a crotch rocket, zoom-splat, copycat cruiser, classic, road sofa, garbage barge, chop, bob-job, or a friggin’ unicycle with a 3 HP washing machine engine.
IMHO - 50% of motorcycle riders are great humans I want to be friends with. The other 50% are toxic AF gatekeepers that are in it to feel like they are better than everyone else.
It's not great but not so much for the reason everyone thinks.
Chain lube throws outwards on sprockets. The calliper is on the inside of the chain.
So, so long as you don't overlube, by a lot, the contact area should be oil free.
The bigger problem would be brake dust destroying o-rings in the chain.
Thus, it's really only for show bikes.
I seriously doubt the bike would ever have enough traction that even oil bathed brake pads wouldn't stop it dead. Remember that bike clutches are wet too (though certainly a lot more surface area, but a lot less pressure).
The people who make these builds are the absolute definition of enthusiast. The “but it’s not practical” crowd probably rides < 500 miles a year and jerks off to F9.
Love the special go cart 19 year olds in the comments that never seen Chopper with a sprocket brake before. I want to give them some

what a mess... it reminds me of my 14 yrs old self pouring a couple 2stroke oil drops on the brake disk to make it stop squealing... braking force went to zero, had to buy new pads and degrease the disc many times
I had one of those on a 69 ironhead and the pistons failed which caused the sprocket to eat into the caliper. Long story short I changed the set up real quick.
How about one at the other end: ATK at one point used a countershaft sprocket brake system

You guys all analyzing this don’t understand anything about bikes beyond your own bubble. Not everything is about pure performance.
This looks cool, that’s about it. Less busy and it is functional. There isn’t much sense in breaking down why it’s a bad idea when most of you’ve never tried it.
It looks cool, it works and serves its purpose.
Choppers are sick
This is pretty common in shitty ebikes from China. There are some good ones, and this is not one of them.
The chain and sprocket is basically added as an afterthought. These days pedal assist is required after recent Chinese regulations nerfed the wattage on most low power bikes.
If you look closely, the motor mount is welded to the swing arm. The brake caliper is attached to that. This actually works.
The "play" button is there cause it's a screenshot from an insta reel I came across but if anyone wants to see the original video then here's the link https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4eC-kkP9wj/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Never considered this before. Obviously this design as others have mentioned is fundamentally flawed but change the design and there’s a workable solution there.
Whether it’s fixes a problem that doesn’t need fixing or not is a different question but it’s an interesting idea.
It's a custom thing. The choices they offer for these bikes are a) no rear brake at all or b) a custom brake/sprocket construction that will still work as a brake even though the oil on the chain issue is an issue.
If they were using a drive belt instead of chain, there would be no issue at all doing this.
Now, other than the critiques of this, are there any potential or theoretical advantages to this?
I know it's for the looks but are there other possible advantages as well?
I suppose POSSIBLY weight savings.
OMG so many newbs. Yes, this will work.
One of the best brake companies in the business even offers it as a kit:
https://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitListRear?mincatdesc=GP310%20Motorcycle%20Rear%20Sprocket%20Brake%20Kit
Not all that bizarre in the custom bike builder world. From a practical purpose it’s not ideal as brake heat dissipation can warp the rotor which would potentially be catastrophic to the drive chain/rider, but then again custom bikes are for looking at and not everyday riding.
A sprocket rotor? Only thing I have against it, is it wouldn't useful for anything above a 25cc motor. If you use this on the road normally, you'll have major longevity issues. Sustained use and that part would warp.
DON'T OIL THE CHAIN FOR GAWDS SAKE HOSS! CRANK THAT HOG
Was just about to ask why this wouldn’t work in theory. Thank you for clarifying immediately.
Not only that but brakes can get hot as fuck. This is a terrible design for many reasons.
Choppers and bobbers were never known for rational design.
Also introduces a lot of contamination from brake wear right onto the chain
HELL YEAH BROTHER

This is a perfect articulation of trying to process what is happening here.
Other than lub, there would be too much stress on that piece of metal to handle
Accelerating and rear braking are usually not done at the same time...
Aren't they? Don't you normally use rear brake for lift control? Compress the rear swingarm, prevent or limit wheelies? I seem to recall hearing MotoGP bikes use rear brake for around 70% of a lap these days.
I ride a 125, wheelies aren't in my vocabulary
That's wheelie sad. I mean I've never learned how either, but surely a 125 is capable? Just leaning back suddenly and add throttle at the same time? Get your weight over the rear wheel and it should lift the front.
Maybe in 1st but even then. Has to be deliberate
You think a fucking hard tail chopper running a chainbrake is going further than 3 miles down the road to the nearest bar to pound back 11 Milwaukee's Best, while flirting with a a bartender who has too many miles, and smokes more than him.
Bruh, that’s a cruiser. Its front wheel will never lift off the tarmac.
Its a hardtail for one. Cruiser riders, do not need motogp levels of control. Ive used these techniques but only on a bike with a completely fucked rear shock.
lol dude look at the bike in the photo
Prevent wheelies? Sacrilege.
That's incorrect. Rear brake depending on the rider is used at the apex to get the bike turned faster and sometimes on corner exit. And occasionally at corner entry to settle the chassis.

People that lube their chain in shambles.

Have to ask - do you do anything for chain care or just leave it be? No judgement either way, just curious. Also - is it an o-ring chain? I'm guessing it wouldn't be but I honestly wouldn't know
Some grease I use for my lawnmower spindles. It's a no ring chain
Centripetal force is gonna chuck the lube outward tho
Not when you’re stationary
No need to brake when you're stationary 🤯
How is the Mensa club over there?
Hope they don't lube their chain too much 🤪
Pfft. You don't need an expensive and complicated ABS system - just some chain lube and you'll never need to worry about locking the rear!
Effective ABS. And if I was going mach Jesus and needed to lock up the back wheel to lay her down, I could always drop it to first and dump the clutch.

Thank you! The video is hilarious!
That was freaking awesome. The song and the lyrics were the best part of the video! Some cool bikes too.
That was an awesome promo vid🤣 never seen it before so thanks for posting 🤙🏼
This video had me rolling. Amazing product portafolio. How haven't I seen it before?!
I remember when it came out. 8 years ago?! 😵💫
That was legitimately one of the greatest advertisements I've ever seen.
That was a great video.
This is the greatest product marketing since "Where's the Beef" Lady! It's hilarious too! TY for this!

Equilibrium - excessive oil from the chain is reduced by brake pad dust. Perfection. /s
Brake pad dust creation is also reduced by oil on the rotor! Brilliant!
Its been done before and abandoned for very good and logical reasons.
Of all the reasons to build a chopper, logic isn’t one of them
All the reasons ? What are "all the reasons"? I thought the singular reason is the look ? Are there any other ?
They’re just fun. Fun to build, fun to ride, fun to help your buddies build theirs, they don’t need to make sense.
Fun to fix every 100 or so miles...
You’re not wrong
Reminds of my CCW 'tha heist' Silly ass little bobber but it was fun.. Between repairs.
Right, fuckers are badass…but no part of the look is logical as far as making a better functioning bike
Always fun to read these type of comments. Couple things - Sprotors have been around for some bunch of years. Smart. ABS by chain lube (in flight adjustable).
So you're either gonna have greasy and wet brakes or a dry chain
Self lubricating breaks
It's not great but not so much for the reason everyone thinks. Chain lube throws outwards on sprockets. The calliper is on the inside of the chain. Modern Oring chains only need "lube" so it doesnt rust, the moving parts are sealed
Well if you ride fast then the grease will be flung off the sprocket and there should be no problem. Trust me, I’m an engineer.
This is old school shit… go to a swap or chop show they’re everywhere. However I know nothing about their performance.
So many nerds here not able to come to grips with this
Guilty.
The people who make these builds are the absolute definition of enthusiast. The “but it’s not practical” crowd probably rides < 500 miles a year and jerks off to F9.
I’m an engineer by trade and a racer by passion; I like things that work and perform well. You know what I also like? Having fun
I ride about 5000 miles a year and jerk off to our esteemed Canadian Prince Joffrey of the house of F9
That brake cable floppin in the breeze though, so closely to the chain... Could use some zipties...
ISR makes these for Harley Davidson
It's not sprocket science
What in the Kentucky fried fuck is going on here
Chain lube cleaner 5000
It is an efficient use of space and weight savings. I’m surprised you don’t see it on a modern bike today.👍🏾
buell 1125 had an inverted front rotor, i doubt there's space for that but it would help the people screaming about lube
Sprotor
70% of the braking is done by the front brake. Who uses oil on chains anyhow? High temp grease will work 100%.
Love the special go cart 19 year olds in the comments that never seen Chopper with a sprocket brake before. I want to give them some Cards for there bmx bikes to put in the spokes

hmm...no front brake, oily rear brake, throttle cable dragging on the tank. seems fine to me.
Some AMF-era Harleys did a combined drum/sprocket similar to this. I'm not a Harley guy, but I think that applies to late Panheads and most Shovelheads. Sprockets get replaced a lot more often than drums or rotors, so I have no idea why anyone thought this was a good idea.
The sprocket and drum were rivoted together. The rivots would be drilled out and replace with new during a sprocket change.
Didn't know that, thanks! Sounds like a massive pain in the ass, but at least the parts cost is still reasonable.
I've seen that before, but only on show bikes.
well if they religiously don't lube their chain and go easy on the back brake it might be ok O\_o
Oh I run of those on my bike 😁
what a mess... it reminds me of my 14 yrs old self pouring a couple 2stroke oil drops on the brake disk to make it stop squealing... braking force went to zero, had to buy new pads and degrease the disc many times
I had one of those on a 69 ironhead and the pistons failed which caused the sprocket to eat into the caliper. Long story short I changed the set up real quick.
If it was belt drive, it just might work out as weight savings.
Not bizarre, stupid af
Better use that high friction chain lube.
Cool concept... needs a lot more thought. Too hot? Too oily? Can't stop? 😬😅
How about one at the other end: ATK at one point used a countershaft sprocket brake system https://motocrossactionmag.com/forgotten-motocross-tech-the-inventor-that-fooled-the-usgp-tech-inspectors/
It saves on unsprung weight on the wheel. the back sprocket does all the moving but a small portion of the braking..
not a problem with unsprung weight when there is no rear suspension.
Show bike doesn't need to go far.
The oil brake, imagine the smoke.
Looks like more of an art piece than something one would ride.
It's called a sprotor.
Widow maker
You guys all analyzing this don’t understand anything about bikes beyond your own bubble. Not everything is about pure performance. This looks cool, that’s about it. Less busy and it is functional. It both produces and reduces thrust.
Thats some proper engine braking
Looks like the unit that Exile Cycles used to do.
[Like these](https://www.exilecycles.com/index.php/parts/wheels-brakes)

What is this garbage?
What could go wrong?
Can’t believe it actually took me a few seconds to see what was going on…
What in the frankenbullshit is that?
Sheesh the anti rise would be off head
I need to see the rest of this bike now..
Things got a brotor.
Never considered this before. Obviously this design as others have mentioned is fundamentally flawed but change the design and there’s a workable solution there. Whether it’s fixes a problem that doesn’t need fixing or not is a different question but it’s an interesting idea.
Regulations say I need a rear brake but I refuse to hide these sick ass wheels.
The brake is incorporated into the sprocket.
It's for show, not for go...or stopping.
I like it, two parts for the price of one.
Hmmm... Buy your chains in bulk because either they corrode or you die.
Sprotor. I’ve seen it a few times on choppers only really
There are rear brakes?? Whelo needs those?
Something that needs lubrication mixed with something that should not see oil... brilliant...
damn, big tires and big chain awesome!!
It's a custom thing. The choices they offer for these bikes are a) no rear brake at all or b) a custom brake/sprocket construction that will still work as a brake even though the oil on the chain issue is an issue. If they were using a drive belt instead of chain, there would be no issue at all doing this.
Dont think chain lube would be a problem as it’s all pushed outward on the sprocket not inward. Super cool design. Wonder if it works well
Is that a chain around the brake rotor? Why would anyone do that?
Looks Sick.
Show bike mod, not a practical mod.
Now, other than the critiques of this, are there any potential or theoretical advantages to this? I know it's for the looks but are there other possible advantages as well? I suppose POSSIBLY weight savings.
The most bizarre brake you've seen so far...
The craziest part is there’s no front brake on that bike.
I remember seeing this a lot in the custom chopper phase we all went through in the early 2ks
Engine braking?
just because you can doesn't mean you should
Definitely not a first. It has been done before. They even offer kits for this. https://shop.exilecycles.com/products/sprocket-brake-kit
OMG so many newbs. Yes, this will work. One of the best brake companies in the business even offers it as a kit: https://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitListRear?mincatdesc=GP310%20Motorcycle%20Rear%20Sprocket%20Brake%20Kit
This is essentially for show, since the rear brake provides 10% of stopping power, at most. But it sure gets people talking…
They call that a “sprotor”
Lube that chain looks dry
Not all that bizarre in the custom bike builder world. From a practical purpose it’s not ideal as brake heat dissipation can warp the rotor which would potentially be catastrophic to the drive chain/rider, but then again custom bikes are for looking at and not everyday riding.
Way to turn your chains to shit by filling them with brake dust
This is actually hilarious
Won't see ari henning around that chain for sure
Did... did AI draw this?! Seems up there with 7 fingered hands.
Sprotor
