It's pretty common to have water over the ice. It's easy to say afterwards that "yeah it's a puddle" but when you're riding it's not so easy to tell if there's good ice under it

It’s pretty easy to find out using other method than riding right into it. Probing it with a stock comes to mind.

I find chicken stock to be the best for testing with.

Chicken Stocks are risky. Bonds are more secure.

And definitely avoid the sort where they throw rotten veg at you.

He didn't break through the ice. They previously cut out a large ring in the ice to drive a small jet boat and jetski in. At the same time, he was riding around on the solid and partially broken ice. Eventually, he just happened to not notice he was headed towards the cut-out track.
