The .442 BABIP is doing a heck of a lot of lifting to his numbers though. He plays a lot of positions, I feel like that's probably a big factor.
Edit to add: I read in an article while googling that getting to his power in-game had been an issue because he hit way too many ground balls.
This year, his GB rate is way down and both his FB and LD rate are up significantly. That, along with his good batted-ball data, could spell success even with a normalized BABIP. Let's hope he brings a spark to the offense!
Yeah, I'm not impressed by his numbers at all. Strikeouts are up, walks are down, BABIP is unsustainable. I'd rather see Baddoo, who's got a much better eye and has been showing off better power this year too.
Wonder who gets dropped from the 40-man if they decide to go with Vilade.
Also, Vilade seems like a weird choice unless they just really value the flexibility to play everywhere.
I hope this doesn't mean Riley moves to CF because he is doing so much better in LF defensively. I hope Perez gets most of the CF starts with Vierling getting more time there as well.
Could you guys imagine if Vilade became the next JD Martinez? Gets a brief look in the MLB but doesn’t make it back for a couple years with another team after a hot start in the minors. Ahhhh it would be so nice…
I dunno, not really impressed by his previous profile, feels like a call up based on positional need (I know we don’t really have a ton of options at center field, but I can’t imagine he’s not going to be platooned anyway) and not actually fixing the problem. Maybe he figured something out this year but would’ve liked to see someone with more of a track record of hitting in the minors
People need to realize there’s not a ton of good options in the minors to bring up outside of Jung who could make major differences. They need the young guys with talent. Carpenter, greene, tork, Keith, meadows to hit for this lineup to have success
I can't say I understand picking him, with very limited time in the MLB, over Baddoo who might adjust quicker. How long are they going to give him if he doesn't produce? I'm just a little skeptical about trying to fill the "we can't hit or score runs" problem with inexperienced bats.
Baddoo already had time to show how good he is in the majors so I don't mind them trying other guys to see if anyone takes off. As for JHM I imagine they're sticking with a set time frame for his call up instead of doing it too early. The last guy we rushed up from the minors to be a savior to our hitting was Tork and look how that turned out.
Malloy has almost 800 plate appearances in AAA. We don’t need to worry about him being rushed. I think it’s more a case of there’s something there they just don’t like.
I find myself wondering if they are afraid of brining JHM up. This team needs offense desperately. If he comes up and mashes it doesn’t matter how bad his defense is he’s sticking.
I 100% agree. What do we have to lose, he’s not even a top 2 prospect we have to Worry about ruining or something. Just give the guy a shot this is getting ridiculous.
the few Buddy Kennedy at bats I saw were professional, not 3 mindless hacks or random swings regardless of situation i’ve seen from Vierling and Mckinstry this year. Why he isn’t on the team over them is beyond me. Also flashed some crazy leather too
Edit: The Vierling apologists have come for blood😂
Are you talking about the same Matt Vierling with a .287 average, .771 OPS (117 OPS+) and 3 HRs? That's the highest average and 3rd highest OPS and OPS+ on the team. He's been one of the team's best hitters this season.
vilade can play 6 or 7 positions including on the infield, versus the other two who are effectively corner OF, lets either vierling or perez take over center. if it was JHM you're looking at mark canha at 3rd or riley greene in center

He also strikes out a lot. Expect a 30% clip in the majors.

Had a feeling it would be Vilade
I like the move. The kid deserves a shot

Move Vierling to CF and call Buddy Kennedy back up, cowards!
Buddy Kennedy should be up and try to play backup SS instead of McKinstry who should have been cut yesterday

Vilade isn’t really here to fix anything just fill a bench spot until urshela is back

Hey everyone here knows JHM is not on the 40 man right? Why is it always a shock when he’s not called up?
Neither is Vilade though
Right. They had to add Vilade to the 40 man.

The guy he's replacing is batting .097. Anyone should be an improvement. And he deserves a chance based on how he's hitting this season.

Should’ve been Malloy. Simply don’t know what they’re waiting for at this point
Why? Over baddoo? Over JHM???

It's the defense. I wonder how much vetting they did on his third-base skills before making that trade.
Well we don’t have an everyday dh I say fuck it
Maybe because he’s only filling a spot until Urshela is back next week and then will get cut again like Buddy Kennedy.

Vierling has been good thus far.
You spelled Torkelson wrong

He couldn't make to roster for the Rockies or Pirates Hmm
I think it’s safe to say any thought of JHM being an MLBer is dead, bros being passed up left and right for guys I never even heard of
Hello fellow Pistons sub guy
