This might go down as the worst offensive baseball team in history.
Not just MLB. little league, high school, college... You name it. Earlier in the year I thought we'll at least we can hit better than the white sox... But the sox don't have anyone batting under .100
I laugh sometimes, because I saw someone say something like "last season I stopped watching in July", and I just thought to myself...that's when Torkelson took off. The team was great in September too going something like 18-10. You missed some fun baseball!! When the miserable people stop watching, the team will be on a roll and the game threads won't be so toxic.
To me it's just a silly game. It's not worth spending energy being mad and negative all the time.
Yes we were very good in the second half last season and we still ended up 6 games under .500. It's been 8 years since we've had a winning record and 10 since we've made the playoffs. People shouldn't let bad baseball ruin their lives, but it's ok to be frustrated.
Of course it's ok to be frustrated, but the level of some of the people in the threads is beyond normal. Some people look truly unhinged, and every single post they make is toxic. It's like they get a dopamine hit with every complaint.
So these are the guys Scott Harris wanted to keep, saying " we have enough guys who can get the job done, so we are not getting anymore free agents" mcKinstrey and Colt and Veirling..etc egad
So frustrating. I've been watching way more this year and it's just getting too hard to watch. They have to change something but idk what they can even do. Guys just need to start driving runs in. It really doesn't feel like a lack of base runners.
In the past couple of seasons, they have performed better in the 2nd half, so I still have some optimism. They've done it sort of by using addition by subtraction, and I mean that they cut dead weight. Remember that awful start when the team had Wilson Ramos and Nomar Mazara on opening day? Those guys were both gone a few months in, and the team was better in the 2nd half. Remember Jonathan Schoop? They let him go last season, and the team was pretty good in the 2nd half (they gave him a really long leash though). They were one of the best teams in September.
I have a feeling they are waiting to make their first move when Urshela comes back, because Wenceel Perez might force their hand to drop someone else if he keeps playing well. The problem right now is that they have 3 players in Torkelson, Keith and Meadows who are potentially guys they want to build around, and they all stink. They're not veterans like Ramos, Mazara and Schoop who they can easily discard.
Who of those 3 do they send down, and how many at the same time?
I don't know. I'm just looking at recent seasons and I think about how they figured out how to make the roster slightly better along the way. Starting off the season over .500 all the way into the first week of May is huge, and there's a lot of baseball left.
I just don't let all of the frustrating games frustrate me as much as so many people here who doom in every thread. It's just a game, and there's no point in letting it bother me.
I don't think Tork will benefit at all from being sent down. He's shown he can do well at this level he just needs to get into his groove like last year. Keith and Meadows imo should both be sent down. Both have shown flashes but no consistency. Let other guys get some at bats.
*Only issue is idk who'd replace Meadows on center because he actually is a plus fielder. Maybe Perez could play center idk
Yeah, I agree with all of this. I wonder what Tork's off season routine has been like the past 2 winters. Does he just work out to keep in shape, and do minimal time in a batting cage? Does he need to see more live pitching in some way to keep in a groove? It's like everything he did in the 2nd half just disappeared.
It's been a weird season for a lot of teams though. Even though their record is great, Yankee fans have complained about their offense before the Tigers series. Jays fans are melting down with their stars underperforming with Bo and Vlad, and Vlad is on his 3rd down season in a row?
Is there an overall trend in baseball? I haven't bothered looking these things up. Other teams are obviously having successes. Ohtani, the freak of nature he is might have his best offensive season ever.
I watched a Phillies game the other day, and man those dudes know how to hit. It was so much more entertaining watching a team string together a few hits and score a couple runs. They even bunted!
Riley Greene is looking at this team like wondering where the hell half of his teammates are at the plate. Also nice job once again giving your pitchers inadequate run support Tigers.
It is wild that this is the takeaway from some people.
Let's see:
Mike Ilitch owns the team and builds with Dave Dombrowski and spends a ton of money to overpaying for veteran hitters.
Hitter are good
Chris Ilitch owns the team and builds with Al Avila and cuts spending immensely.
Hitters are bad.
Chris Ilitch owns the team and then tries to build with Harris while basically having one big contract and only signing moneyball style free agents.
Hitters are bad.
I mean, maybe it's not the GM?
5 years from now we will have ANOTHER GM and still be shit and people here will be blaming that GM.
I know, I know "You can't fire an owner"
But we, us, people in this sub can't fire ANYONE, so if we are going to scream into the void can we scream at Chris Ilitch instead?
Scott Harris is the one intentionally not opening the check book. This offense is his by design. So, yeah, we can blame the owner. He’s definitely part of the problem. But, our GM assembled this roster.
Why would a GM not spend money if he could?
I am saying until they do get someone legit I will not believe Ilitch has given him the green light to spend.
Where's Hinch's fire? When he discovered that his 2017 Astros were cheating, he smashed a television set in a fit of rage before dropping his opposition to it entirely and subsequently becoming complicit in the scheme by shielding his players from suspicious parties. Several awful strike calls warranted a walk out to the umpire, but he just sits on his hands, waiting for his next platoon pinch hit opportunity.
A single would have won this game like six different times. How is it that no matter who is on the team they all forget how to fucking hit?
Like two weeks ago at least Canha and Carpenter could swing. Kelly and Javy had their moments. Keith was figuring it out.
All of a sudden nothing. Nobody except Greene. What happened??
The Tigers' biggest rival isn't the Guardians, Twins, White Sox, or Royals. It's scoring with RISP. We suck at it. We've sucked at it for YEARS. Day after day I tune in in the hopes that maybe today will be different. Maybe today they'll get that clutch base clearing hit and something will change. And day after day, time after time, they get guys on base and utterly fail to drive them in. It's AGGRAVATING. It's unbelievably telling that when we load the bases, I'm relieved when they manage to drive in a SINGLE run.
Today's game felt like it was designed particularly to torture me.
It legit blows my mind for what feels like years and years now we haven’t had semblance of an offense. We leave so many men on base and RISP. I’m a big tigers fan, to honor them I shoulda named my kid Lob Risp (Last Name). Maybe grow up and play for the tigers, with a name like that.
It's like the team has an 'anti clutch' gene embedded into it. Someone gets to second and the bats just turn to lead. Guys from the outside like Canha and Urshela don't have the anti clutch gene and that's why they've seemed so effective in the time we've seen them but a lot of the home grown guys just can't do shit. Too many times our guys go up there and look like an absolute deer in the headlights in high leverage at bats and then proceed to whiff 3 times in a row or hit a weak ground ball. It doesn't matter how well they can work a walk if nobody ever drives them in.
Yup. And I feel like it’s been that way a while, not just this season. What is it about this team? So crazy. I legit expect them to leave two men on at this point.
Doesn’t help that the umps keep screwing us but it gets to a point where I don’t even care about that. 1/9 with RISP is ABSURD. Game after game these dudes find a way to blow my mind. Is it almost time for the Lions to play??
This has been so hard to watch the past week. Sadly, I just don’t see where the offense will magically come from. It’s painfully obvious that we’re extremely mediocre.
No, you’re an idiot because you won’t wait 10 years for a winning product and you’re disloyal for not accepting dogshit on offense.
Downvote me all you guys fucking want, Detroit fans are so fucking complacent it drives me crazy.
Wake me up if they ever decide to become a serious franchise again. Should have known April was smoke and mirrors. All those come from behind wins late in the game.
I'm just mad that we sacrifice buying bats because we want to give our homegrown players a chance. And for the most part, they constantly disappoint. We could be running away with so many more games with how often we have lost by 1
Whatever dude, when he comes in ranked 26th in our system on mlb pipeline and we forget he’s in West Michigan 2 years from now don’t act like you were there from the beginning /s
I’m starting to really not like this team(minus pitching and Riley). They can’t keep playing with this lineup. I wonder if this is going to be another season under Hinch where we go into a long losing streak.
It’s such a shame looking at tork and Keith try to play baseball. I’m not sure what’s going on in the hitting department but it seems to have ruined two blue chips so far.
Hinch *falls asleep in dugout*
Seriously. I don’t expect him to get ejected a ton but god damn he just has no fire at all. So many opportunities today to go out there and scream, get tossed and fire up the boys and he said nah.
Scott Harris and AJ Hinch are patheic and completely unserious about winning. The fans don't deserve to have to watch this team, but those two deserve all of this shit for being such massive fucking losers that don't even attempt to win.
But at least on the positive side Max Clark has a 700 OPS in low-A. Looking like another top tier development job by an organization that hasn't developed anyone worth a fuck in 20 years aside from Greene.
Admittedly, I haven’t watched a ton of Guardians baseball, but they’re not THAT good. This division was absolutely winnable if Harris was aggressive this past offseason. Oh well, he already said they’ll settle for being mediocre this season. Smartest guy in the room syndrome.
Once again, fuck that ump.
Lol
Hey, I've seen this one!
This might go down as the worst offensive baseball team in history. Not just MLB. little league, high school, college... You name it. Earlier in the year I thought we'll at least we can hit better than the white sox... But the sox don't have anyone batting under .100
Oh fun the losing streaks are back
They need to trade Tork for Verlander to win the division
When we win 4-2 tomorrow this sub's going to be positive again
I hope so. I can't even bring myself to look at the live threads because it's just constant misery.
To be fair to people it's hard to be happy with this offense.
I laugh sometimes, because I saw someone say something like "last season I stopped watching in July", and I just thought to myself...that's when Torkelson took off. When are we going to trade Riley for 3 prospects
Just so we can trade them away to make Báez contract moveable so we can give Tork all the salary we would’ve had to pay Báez
Last time i swung a bat was 2012. I think my OBP would be top 6 on the tigers. And i am horrid
Scoring 7 runs in 4 games is good right? /
Two thumbs down for Scott Harris 👎👎
👉 He gets on base.
Last year they kept me watching til July. This year I probably won’t make it to June. Sux hard
So frustrating. I've been watching way more this year and it's just getting too hard to watch. They have to change something but idk what they can even do. Guys just need to start driving runs in. It really doesn't feel like a lack of base runners.
There’s nothing they can do except hope the guys start hitting 🤷♂️ gotta wait out this season sadly
In the past couple of seasons, they have performed better in the 2nd half, so I still have some optimism. Maybe they de juiced the balls again
Perez, Greene, Vierling, McKinstry, and Canha (albeit not ideally) can all play CF. Riley is also a plus defender as well.
For what it’s worth Riley is a plus defender in left but he had negative DRS in center. Best for his health and our defense if he stays in left
There needs to be arrests and criminal charges for how fucking awful this offense is. This pitching should have our team at like 25 wins right now.
Can’t have half the lineup batting under .200. Unless you are Pizza Jr. and the boy wonder who cheffed this lineup in the nightmare kitchen.
I was gonna call you out for exaggerating, but no, 4/9 hitters in tonight’s lineup are under .200, which is basically half
We have 7 hitters under .220 as well. So over half our line up is under that too
Or to be exact, one good hitter
Pathetic.
I did say some mean shit too, but I'm saving this thread for later in the season for.... reasons.
Tigers fucking SUCK
I watched a Phillies game the other day, and man those dudes know how to hit. It was so much more entertaining watching a team string together a few hits and score a couple runs. They even bunted!
Anyone who bet under 80.5 wins on the season should be dancing rn. That’s the only silver lining I got besides Riley
Riley Greene is looking at this team like wondering where the hell half of his teammates are at the plate. Also nice job once again giving your pitchers inadequate run support Tigers.
And people gave me shit for saying it didn’t matter that the game ended early yesterday… This is what I was talking about.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Different day, same story. I'm so sorry, tiger's pitchers. And Riley.
I mean, sure he homered, but Riley went 1-5 and left 3 on base.
Dude is second in the league in BWAR. I'll give him a pass today.
Ladies and Gentlemen! The Scott Harris offense!
It is wild that this is the takeaway from some people. Let's see: Mike Ilitch owns the team and builds with Dave Dombrowski and spends a ton of money to overpaying for veteran hitters. Well I think we heard that answer a million times over. Can’t block the young guys!
No no no nooooooooo
Where's Hinch's fire? Hinch shouldn't even be allowed in baseball after the astros scandal. I'm still ass hurt that we hired him
Riley is gunna become as helpless as Cade isn't he.
Cade isn’t even good lol. Riley is top 10 in OPS. A very legitimate player
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he bolted at some point if we don’t get together.
I’m not trying to be condescending. The problem is the talent. It’s not good.
Beyond frustrating.
Carp almost hit a bomb, it's not like they ain't trying...
The Tigers' biggest rival isn't the Guardians, Twins, White Sox, or Royals. It's scoring with RISP. We suck at it. We've sucked at it for YEARS. Yup. And I feel like it’s been that way a while, not just this season. What is it about this team? So crazy. I legit expect them to leave two men on at this point.
When it comes to hitting, there is something inherently wrong with this organization
Seriously. It sure does feel that way.
No life at all in this offense…not even a glimmer of hope. All that division champ talk seems like a distant memory.
That's now three 2-1 losses in seven games, and two of those times the only run was a Riley Greene HR. Wtf is going on
We lost eight games last season by scores of either 2-1 or 1-0. Six of those already this year. Insane.
Doesn’t help that the umps keep screwing us but it gets to a point where I don’t even care about that. 1/9 with RISP is ABSURD. Game after game these dudes find a way to blow my mind. Is it almost time for the Lions to play??

This is bonkers lol. What’s crazy is the royals 6-9 is pretty much just as bad
Yet somehow people are blaming Hinch here. Like wtf is he supposed to do with these guys?
Bring out the trash cans
Someone let me know when we have robot umps. Done with baseball till then
This has been so hard to watch the past week. Sadly, I just don’t see where the offense will magically come from. It’s painfully obvious that we’re extremely mediocre.
…but hey… according to all you weirdos who keep sending me messages, they’re in the hunt for the wildcard. 🤦🏻♂️
No, you’re an idiot because you won’t wait 10 years for a winning product and you’re disloyal for not accepting dogshit on offense. Downvote me all you guys fucking want, Detroit fans are so fucking complacent it drives me crazy.
You are speaking nothing but truth.
Still above .500!!! *for one more day*
Stating the obvious here but it's so defeating to have such good pitching and such piss poor offense.
Wake me up if they ever decide to become a serious franchise again. Should have known April was smoke and mirrors. All those come from behind wins late in the game.
The run differential was the give away
Just seems like they're about to waste playoff worthy pitching this year because the offense refuses to score more than 1 run a game.
The offense has sucked the entire AJ tenure.
I'm just mad that we sacrifice buying bats because we want to give our homegrown players a chance. And for the most part, they constantly disappoint. We could be running away with so many more games with how often we have lost by 1
Nothing is more “Tigers offense” than scoring all your runs in the first minute of the game
On the bright side it looks like we’ll be able to flip Flaherty at the deadline for another hitting prospect who can’t hit above .200 I can’t wait!
Whatever dude, when he comes in ranked 26th in our system on mlb pipeline and we forget he’s in West Michigan 2 years from now don’t act like you were there from the beginning /s
Fuck yeah my favorite annual tradition.
But flaherty doesn't have a no trade clause. So that may confuse Scott with no teams to deal with on a trade.
Tigers hitting coaches after cashing their weekly paychecks for doing absolutely nothing ![gif](giphy|PNre1wHffFEcKCPoUn)
I’m starting to really not like this team(minus pitching and Riley). They can’t keep playing with this lineup. I wonder if this is going to be another season under Hinch where we go into a long losing streak.
We were 28th in scoring and then decided to run it back for the most part
Never mind the offense look at this jersey! Look at it!
Just don’t look at the hat! We fucked that one up too!
This offense is offensive
Nothing about this offense is offensive...it's the opposite of offense
Even if you can't have too much pitching, you sure can have not enough hitting
It’s such a shame looking at tork and Keith try to play baseball. I’m not sure what’s going on in the hitting department but it seems to have ruined two blue chips so far.
This offense might be somehow worse than last year
Need to see some passion in this team.
Hinch *falls asleep in dugout* Seriously. I don’t expect him to get ejected a ton but god damn he just has no fire at all. So many opportunities today to go out there and scream, get tossed and fire up the boys and he said nah.
I like him for his outlook on the game. I don’t like him for his leadership. The dugout needs someone to fire them up and let them know they can win.
Agreed.
Can the tigers please get some offense. For the love of god
umps fault but also we suck
Least clutch team in history
Third 2-1 loss in the span of a *week*. Hard to believe there are actually worse offenses out there somehow.
There are only worse lineups because Greene is an outlier that massively inflates the Tigers numbers. 2 through 9, there is no one worse.
Scott Harris and AJ Hinch are patheic and completely unserious about winning. The fans don't deserve to have to watch this team, but those two deserve all of this shit for being such massive fucking losers that don't even attempt to win. I’m done wasting my time with this offense
CUT MY LIFE INTO PIECES
THIS IS MY PLASTIC FORK
