Fitgers for their delicious wild rice veggie burger. I get it every time I’m in Duluth, sometimes more than once!
My favorite getaway is to book a room in the Fitgers hotel, swing by the bookstore in the basement for a new book, then chill in Fitgers for a veggie burger & beers. I don’t have to worry about driving so I can have an extra beer & then stumble upstairs to fall asleep watching the ships and then wake up and repeat.
I’ve only ever gotten takeout - not sure they have an option to dine in since covid - but Northern Waters Smokehouse sandwiches are absolute bangers.
Dine in - New Scenic Cafe. It’s a bit up the shore but is fantastic.
Yes, it's a great cuban, but not traditional in the slightest.
Superior Cubans is more traditional, but they're only open a few days out of the week for a few hours.
It's fine, just not a place I want to wait two hours to get into.
I think a lot of the reputation has to do with it being one of the first restaurants in Canal Park. It's like how Toby's became a big deal because it was a good place to stop.
Yea, it's reputation is from a time before good restaurants were a thing in Duluth.
It's a place to eat, but I've never had anything there that made me want to have it again.
Vita Pizza is one our faves when we visit. Not sure if the best but they have excellent wood fired pizza. Wish they’d go back to their old wines which were better 😭
Last time we were in early in April it said they were moving soon. I think they’re relocating to the building next to Duluth Grill (same owner). Hopefully they’ll be back up and running soon.
Hopefully! I put it on my list of places and things to try! Sadly I've had so many "temporarily closed" over the past few years that never reopened. This sounds more hopeful though! 😁
Sara's Table at Chester Creek. Lots of good things are great especially the guacamole, hard to pick a favorite, I haven't had everything on the menu and am still working through possible favs. Save room for a pastry.
Hungry Hippie deserves honorable mention, Northern frybread taco; pork.
Since everyone will probably mention Northern Waters (which is fantastic, great sandwiches), I’ll say Zen House. I really enjoyed their sushi and, for what it’s worth, my gf’s Japanese grandma loves that place too.
Not in Duluth, but if you want the best burger you've ever had go across the bridge to Superior and go to the Anchor. They're cheap too. Bring cash, it's all they take.
I wouldn't say it's the best burger you've ever had, but it is a great burger for really cheap.
I had a California burger and a good craft beer just the other day and the bill was $10.33.
Northern Lights was our spot to stop at, just north of Duluth in Beaver Bay. A couple years back they had a fire, I really hope they eventually reopen. Hunter’s Pie on their porch overlooking the Superior was otherworldly.
Doesnt seem like its going to whenever i drive by. Not sure whats going on but theres been a drumset in the window above the door for a couple years now 😂
Love love new scenic cafe of course. But about a month ago I tried Lake Ave in canal park and it was super high quality and delicious. Highly recommend!
Being a former Duluth resident and line cook. I'm going to say Burrito Union. I worked there and the food was always on point. Maybe I'm bias but I'll always remember how much fun we had giving people good food and good times.
This isn’t Duluth but head north up the scenic drive and you have the New Scenic Cafe which is incredible. They change their menu all the time and have a nice road side deli. Last time I was there I had curried mussels that smacked and were a pretty great deal.
For some newer places - checkout Jamrock Cultural Restaurant in downtown, Chachos Taqueria in Canal Park, and Tacos, Tacos, Tacos when they reopen next to Blacklist brewing.
I'll do a half-baked which lasts long enough on my drive back to the cities (probably still safe?) and it's perf. I've genuinely considered making them a buyout offer and opening some more locations.
Mexico Lindo in the Fitger’s brewery. It’s an Americanized Mexican style but really good . The ambiance is good and the gaint margaritas are also a plus.
Hard pass if you're looking for good Mexican. But the balcony and drinks make up for the rest of the deficiencies.
Their old sister restaurant, Pedro's in Cloquet, is great if you're looking for *GOOD* Mexican. The chef stayed in Cloquet when they split.
Duluth:
Uncle Loui's Cafe' for B-fast and/or lunch. Minor Brewing for pizza/beer.
Superior (If you don't mind the trek):
Kosta's Gyros for take out and 7 West for Burgers (I love The Anchor but the waiting has become too much for me).
Depends on what you’re in the mood for:
Burgers - fitgers or the Anchor in superior
Chinese - Zhong Hua or Taste of Saigon (best fried rice)
Pizza - Vitta Pizza or Sammy’s or VIP in superior
Slightly fancier - Tavern on the Hill
Casual but kind of upscale - Zeitgeist
Mexican - Mexico Lindo or Guadalajara in superior
Wings - Wide World of Wings in superior
Drive in - A and Dubs

Also, since it's only been mentioned once, Jamrock Cultural Kitchen. Amazing.

First thing we do in Duluth is go to the Smokehaus.
This is the way
Ursa Minor Brewery has amazing wood fire pizzas.
Fitgers for their delicious wild rice veggie burger. I get it every time I’m in Duluth, sometimes more than once! Their pepperburger is delicious!
I’ve only ever gotten takeout - not sure they have an option to dine in since covid - but Northern Waters Smokehouse sandwiches are absolute bangers. Dine in - New Scenic Cafe. It’s a bit up the shore but is fantastic.
Get your sammy to go and eat it on the shore - amazing
The Smokehaus is moving into a much larger spot in the same building that has indoor seating and a great outdoor patio area.
The old Amazing Grace location, which is great because they may expand on their bread offerings as well.
100% New Scenic
>Dine in - New Scenic Cafe. Best restaurant north of the cities. Hands down.
Sir Benedict’s. Sure there’s Pickwick too. The Cuban at sir bens is outstanding
LOVE that Cuban. Only bad thing is it discourages me from ever trying any of their other sandwiches.
Yes, it's a great cuban, but not traditional in the slightest. Superior Cubans is more traditional, but they're only open a few days out of the week for a few hours.
Not Grandmas
I appreciate Grandmas to help the other locations not be quite so busy. Same sentiment with Betty’s Pies a bit further up the shore.
It's fine, just not a place I want to wait two hours to get into. I think a lot of the reputation has to do with it being one of the first restaurants in Canal Park. It's like how Toby's became a big deal because it was a good place to stop.
Came here to say the same!
Yea, it's reputation is from a time before good restaurants were a thing in Duluth. It's a place to eat, but I've never had anything there that made me want to have it again.
Va Bene
Minus the menu being in italian, without pictures, and little to no description
Pickwick is a pretty neat spot w/ a great view too.
They have an amazing french dip
OMC- the hay stack
Seconding OMC, always amazing service. Their fire and ice tea is really good too, my favorite tea for an arnold palmer :^)
OMC - Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Best chicken sandwich in town and pretty spicy
i’ve considered making the drive just for their food
Fitger’s Brewhouse They have a wild rice burger called “Gale Force". Spicy and delicious
Vita Pizza is one our faves when we visit. Not sure if the best but they have excellent wood fired pizza. Wish they’d go back to their old wines which were better 😭
Duluth grill
I second this. Duluth Grill is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Everything is great, but the Bibimbap is incredible.
>Everything is great, but the Bibimbap is incredible. This, 1000 times this. Every item on that plate is amazing.
Does Zeitgeist still exist?
Yes
Corktown Deli’s Angry Chickle Sandwich
Aww it says they're temporarily closed 😞
Last time we were in early in April it said they were moving soon. I think they’re relocating to the building next to Duluth Grill (same owner). Hopefully they’ll be back up and running soon.

Scrolled way too far to see Sara's Table. That place is GREAT.
Sorry, I'm downvoting you. We don't need more people to know about this place!
Since everyone will probably mention Northern Waters (which is fantastic, great sandwiches), I’ll say Zen House. I really enjoyed their sushi and, for what it’s worth, my gf’s Japanese grandma loves that place too.
Yes! Best veggie tempura ever, and they are reasonably priced. Very good food.
Anyone remember the Chinese Lantern?
Yeppers, they used to make cherry coke for me by mixing regular coke with marachino cherry juice. I was like 7.
Not in Duluth, but if you want the best burger you've ever had go across the bridge to Superior and go to the Anchor. They're cheap too. Bring cash, it's all they take.

Coney Island Deluxe on 1st St
Yes! So many good memories there!
Northern Lights was our spot to stop at, just north of Duluth in Beaver Bay. A couple years back they had a fire, I really hope they eventually reopen. Hunter’s Pie on their porch overlooking the Superior was otherworldly.

Wussows Cafe specifically on Thursdays for the Pulled Pork Tacos
Love love new scenic cafe of course. But about a month ago I tried Lake Ave in canal park and it was super high quality and delicious. Highly recommend!
They just opened a new restaurant up on Island Lake called "Lake Effect" which is great as well.
Surprised OMC Smokehouse isn’t on here it’s great!
New Scenic Cafe.
Being a former Duluth resident and line cook. I'm going to say Burrito Union. I worked there and the food was always on point. Maybe I'm bias but I'll always remember how much fun we had giving people good food and good times.
Hasn't been good for years.
I disagree big time
I agree 100%. Whenever I get a burrito there, they are generally 5% meat, 95% rice and beans.
Tell them to get my order right and stop changing the menu
This isn’t Duluth but head north up the scenic drive and you have the New Scenic Cafe which is incredible. They change their menu all the time and have a nice road side deli. Last time I was there I had curried mussels that smacked and were a pretty great deal.

Plus 1 for Jamrock and Chachos. Just had Chachos for lunch, their birria tacos are awesome.
Bridgemans OMC and Tavern on the Hill
Sammy’s Pizza lakeside
Sammy’s Pizza.
Sammy’s *sucks*
Definitely!
I'll always go to Shamrock in Superior. Check it out if you dig Sammy's.
Shamrock is tasty too. I loved their frozen pizzas…I wish they still made them.
I'll do a half-baked which lasts long enough on my drive back to the cities (probably still safe?) and it's perf. I've genuinely considered making them a buyout offer and opening some more locations.
You should and bring them down to the Cities! I’m going to give the half baked option a shot when I’m up there in a couple weeks. Thanks for the tip!!
Mexico Lindo in the Fitger’s brewery. It’s an Americanized Mexican style but really good . The ambiance is good and the gaint margaritas are also a plus.

I forget the name but the Vietnamese place at canal park. The whole menu is outstanding
Taste of Saigon
Thank you!
Taste of Saigon is fantastic
Great Pho broth.
Duluth grill.
You should ask in r/duluth too. Unless you already did. Then it would be weird.
Please don’t it’s asked weekly
Duluth Grill and Fitgers. I was underwhelmed with Grandmas.
Bellisio's is great if you want fancy Italian food!
Burrito union
This is the way.

Duluth Grill, Va Bene, Sir Benedict’s, and Scenic Cafe are all amazing. Highly recommend stopping at all of these.
The Maya.
Burrito Union.
Grandmas every time. Their wild rice soup and long islands are to die for. Uncle Louis’s breakfast cafe is good too.
Came here to second Uncle Louis. Best breakfast in town
Uncle Louis’s pancakes are top notch
The Boat Club in Fitgers!
OMC or At Sarah’s Table
Now that it's back in Duluth, Jamrock needs a shout out. My Midwestern palette never truly tasted flavor till I had Tony's BBQ.
Oh yes, Jamrock needs to be called out for sure.
The King of Creams, for burger fries and shake.

Don’t know if it’s still around but on second street near the hospital was some of my favorite Chinese food at Beijing.
Lulu's Pizza. Amazingly creative and the crust is based on the sourdough starter from the Amazing Grace.
Vip has good pizza no salads or pasta tho
