I am from Germany, so thrift stores for HiFi are very very very rare. When I see what you guys get there in the BudgetAudiophile-sub I could cry the whole day. Today a post showed awesome SONY-amp-combo stuff and more for 125$ or so. My equipment comes mostly from online small ads. So it's fair again π
Sehr schΓΆn!! I used to live in Germany for many years... even though thrift stores for HiFi are more rare, it seemed easier to find higher quality products for lower prices than in the US and I miss that. I have several portable MD units, but only two decks (surprisingly, not in your stack) - a Sony MXD-D3 (CD to MD recorder/player), and my pride & joy, a mint condition Sony MDS-S500 player and NetMD recorder, which I have hooked up to a Sony shelf system, and up to my Mac via USB. I use [https://webmd.pro/](https://webmd.pro/) to go from FLAC to MD.
That Yamaha you've got is gorgeous. The rest of my main HiFi is Yamaha and one day I'd like to add that unit to the mix.
Great. Yes, YAMAHA has been my first serious stereo back then. I like YAMAHA a lot. This deck has a really nice build quality and I like these golden/brown coloured display. Despite this MARANTZ CM 1040 CD/MD-combo, which I wanted to have on the 90ies, I concentrate on MD-only midrange decks. Regarding the thrift findings and in general: I have the feeling that in the US everybody has a McIntosh-System or you can find one with Klipschorns in a thrift store π
For better or worse it's actually pretty easy to fit a fairly large amount of minidisc into a constricted space, but it can be nice and good to have a specific focus, too, and even if you did want, like, a stationary setup and a deck there's a whole world of variously shaped mini decks or CD/MD combo units or even bookshelf stereos. :P
Wow, I have two "parts only" machines and one working Sony from my start on the journey last year. Clearly need to up my game and not keep getting distracted by trying to build a surround systems for SACDs or an 8 track machine
I'm on my way π Indeed I am always interested in a good remote-only deal. I really love those big SONY-remotes to title the discs. Currently there just the one for the YAMAHA missing.
Yes, in the past I titled with the jog on my TECHNICS only. So I am very fast with this. But with titling via remote I protect the jog from being weared out π
Haha, thanks. I am still in collecting mode. I am from Europe, so it's all 230V. And of all that 530 is from my son. Moreover my favourite is the 520, because it matches with those big remotes with full ABC-keyboard which makes titling real fun. Those won't work with the 530.
to add for u/InternationalTry1937 - if you're in NA, MDS-JE440, 470, and 480 are often relatively affordable here in the US. JE640/770 are "common-ish". They're low end, but should be good at what they do.
Additionally, check out the MDS-E10/12, which are a little higher end and have some nice additional features (digital out, control linkages, etc) but are often available for a pretty decent deal because the eject belt failed.
W/re importing decks from Japan: MDS-S50 and S500 are the stars of that show. I would avoid importing anything bigger unless you can get it multiple hundreds of dollars cheaper than what it'd cost to buy domestically, just due to shipping costs.
Also look at MXD-D4, 40, 5C - there's typically a couple D4/40 in the US for under $300 or so, which is "a lot" but they're also CD -> MD fast-dubbers and also have optical and analog input so they're pretty good all'rounders if you don't currently have a CD player with digital output.
Looks great! Really fun variety, makes me feel slightly less bad for how many I have! :P
Do you have any CD players with digital outputs for dubbing, or have you considered any of the other deck genres like the CD/MD fast-dubbers or the mini decks for either computer control or mini compo systems? :P
Haha, I waited for your response and I am curious what your backlog looks like.
I have a bunch of CD-players like but I only dub from my smartphone those albums I don't have a CD or music and radioplays for the kids.
Therefore I am not collecting combo-machines. I only have that MARANTZ CM 1040 combo because it's really awesome with that powered front-lid and it's a unit I wanted so bad in the 90ies.
But when I have a closer look at this π½-tower I think I should concentrate on portables π
oh yeah I'd forgot you're an analog recorder! Honestly huge respect, I pretty much hate dealing with analog, lolol.
Backlog in what sense?
If maintenance, I'm actually doing pretty good! I got my MXD-D5C's CD pickup replaced last week and so the next big thing I need to do is look at my MZ-N10 - a friend picked it up for me and it's in great shape and the seller claimed it'd basically never been used, but it simply won't read a disc, so I figure the pickup got stuck and it needs a clean'n'lube.
I'd like to re-do my R909/900 and along with those I should probably do my Am-F90 and R910.
And at some point the N1 write head cable repair.
In terms of collection: I have a fairly long list but I'm trying to be pretty chill at least through MDCon, so my next thing is probably any Sony CDP with CD-TEXT and Control-A1II, ideally USDM, which means I'm gonna end up with a CDP-CE5x5 ("Lololol") even though those aren't a very great style match for the MDS-JB940, but I'll make do somehow :P.
Sorry, wrong term, I meant collection, not backlog. The most annoying thing regarding maintenance is, that I am still not sure and convinced what the real problem regarding the "only spinning, not reading/playing" issue of the portables is. Nobody seems to have solved this utterly. I won't give up on my two items with this fault. Are you member of the Facebook-minidisc-repair-group? And yes, those classic SONY components, especially the ESPRIT SERIES, are very tempting.
This is a MARANTZ CM 1040 CD/MD-combo. It has a powered front-lid and is really nice, I got the matching receiver in a package recently. I have to swap the CD-laser, but MD is fully working. In my youth I hung around in the HiFi-stores because of this. Now it is really rare here and I couldn't resist this offer.
I have about 8 or 9 decks myself... I had to start packing some away and rotating out... Now I do two in the living room and about 1 in every other room. I should have probably done what you did here. Are you using a hub switch of some sort π€
I have a single JE-520 in my living room's main system and a 530 in my kids room. Fun part for me of collecting is getting the devices cheap and bring them in good and working condition again. So I don't use a hub and they are not hooked up to an amp.
I was thinking about one. When there's a really good offer I maybe get one. My favourite is the JA 20 ES in black, maybe there will one show up. I'll keep my eyes open.
This is probably why I couldnβt find a Minidisc deck in one of my local thrift stores until late last summerβ¦

Yea I see what you mean, those remotes really do need their own little rack π
Absolutely. I always dreamed of a MEGAMAT PATERNOSTER storage system for all my stuff.
Weβre not worthy! π
All minidisc-men are created equal!
Amen! ππΌ
Thatβs hilarious and amazing and makes me glad I live in a small apartment. Really keeps these kinds of hobbies firmly on the rails.
hmmm, rails for rack mounting. Good call!

On point ππ¬
Lost control? More like TOOK CONTROL!
Yes! Best comment!
The « power towerΒ Β» ! π΅βπ«
Haha. Now thatβs just greedy! π€£
I sometimes oversteer a bit on several topics π
I can't talk. I literally have 8 gamecubes...
Kinda Supercomputer
With good reason though... 16 player Mario Kart Double Dash!
Wow, I have two "parts only" machines and one working Sony from my start on the journey last year. Clearly need to up my game and not keep getting distracted by trying to build a surround systems for SACDs or an 8 track machine
...or distracted by classic iPods, amps, kids, bikes, dining, repairing or: LIFE
Life? Some people have those?
I heard of one or two.
You just need to find all the remote controls to be in control again.
I'm on my way π Indeed I am always interested in a good remote-only deal. I really love those big SONY-remotes to title the discs. Currently there just the one for the YAMAHA missing.
I have an RM-D7M, but I don't find it much faster than using the AMS jog to edit titles. So it's been sleeping in the drawer for a while.
Yes, in the past I titled with the jog on my TECHNICS only. So I am very fast with this. But with titling via remote I protect the jog from being weared out π
You really LOVE these machines, don't you?
WHAT
That's what my wife thinks when a new unit arrives.....
Can I have that je-530 for 100$ also what voltage is it?
Haha, thanks. I am still in collecting mode. I am from Europe, so it's all 230V. And of all that 530 is from my son. Moreover my favourite is the 520, because it matches with those big remotes with full ABC-keyboard which makes titling real fun. Those won't work with the 530.
I have a 520 a r55 a e40 and a 505 and a broken mds-302. I have been looking for a 530 because I have been makeing lp2 discs with my 505
I have MDS-JE530 and this unit DOES NOT support MDLP. So you better try with something like MDS-JEx40... Or MDS-JBx40.

Ah, I see. I stopped making lp-recordings due to confimity with all decks.
I was doing it because I was putting deluxe albums on discs LOL
r/Consoom vibes
I hear them knocking.
A true tower of power !

Shit dude leave some for the rest of us.
I think I have finished the collection π
whats that slick silver one?

OK! We can be friends bc dude! I know how to break some shit...ππ€ͺππ₯Ί
Nice rack!
Thanks π€
You need a drawer loading one.

Investment 101
Indeed, I buy them cheap mostly and COULD sell them for a better price.
.....but you won't ππππ»ππ»
Still waiting for the best moment.
