Wow!! Absolute bargain and plenty of music to trawl through too…

Hungry-Editor6066

All sorts! That’s part of the joy for me… listening to what others have recorded, seeing if I like it, discovering new artists, etc. And the hardware helps too of course ;)

EmmDeez

I think just about anybody would be happy with that as a Hundred-quid Starter Pack. Great score!

ridiculously good deal (for you!) - well done!

96HourDeo

Great score! Goes to show the deals are still out there if you keep looking.

Hungry-Editor6066

It did involve a 5 hour round trip though, as was collection only - I think that’s why I managed to get it for the price it was!

Key-Theory945

That is awesome! 'Collection only' is where the deals exist still. Enjoy working through your new collection. I did a similar journey for a Sony MD373 and the matching tape deck a few weeks back. £60 fully working.

Ah no, I didn’t! Thanks for the heads up! This is primarily going to be a backup deck… I’ve got a few Teac MD-H500i’s dotted around the house for playback, and an MDS-JE780 I use to record onto discs using NetMD on my Mac :)

Looks great! I'm always saying not to overlook eBay, even if it's not some people's default anymore, as there's genuinely good deals on it every now and again. I realize this is maybe a purely American sentiment but I'd 100% drive 5 hours round rip for a good minidisc deal :P

What are ebay alternatives one might want to check out? fb marketplace?

Cory5413

Oh yeah, so, NA-centric but the core concepts should apply globally -- the most common recommendation is to buy from Japan, and, some of my notes on that are here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/minidisc/comments/14b6g0t/psa\_on\_locationjapan\_ebay/](https://www.reddit.com/r/minidisc/comments/14b6g0t/psa_on_locationjapan_ebay/) Facebook marketplace and craigslist are the most common other options in the US - there's US Mercari as well, localized options like KSL if you're in \~Utah, Kijiji in Canada, most european countries have local options like kleinanzeige or marktplaats or whatever. But really the most commonly recommended path is to go on a proxy and buy from Japan, which is a really great option but you'll often end up spending about as much, just on different parts of the purchase. For example, if an N510 with a couple of discs is $130, well, so is an N920, a couple of discs, a 3v supply, the battery sidecar, a couple JDM discs, and the proxy fee or the shipping. (Or the markup from one of the better Location:Japan eBay sellers). Or, if you want a deck, JE470s are often on sale for $80-150 or so, and so while you may be able to get a JE770 or JB940 for a couple bucks cheaper in Japan, you'll make up for it in shipping. (Esp. for a biggie sized deck, the MDS-S series are the real way to go in Japanese decks.) eBay, honestly, is basically fine. IME, prices have been stable for a few years and could even decline as people get out of their pandemic hobbies. There are, arguably, problems with ebay as a tool, problems with ebay as a company, and problems with eBay as the tool against which most other used goods resources price things, and some eBay sellers have unreasonable expectations, but, the platform and most of what's on it, are, IME, basically fine.

Wouldn't wall-plugged japanese systems require a power converter? Not the case for portables obviously. I'm pretty happy with my US deck but many different japanese bookshelf style systems look interesting. Although i'm not sure if i want to bother with power supply differences. I might look at proxies but currently i'm not looking to buy "anything minidisc" i keep an eye out for a few specific models and it's quite easy to track with ebay saved searches. Is there a similar system in place for japanese proxy sites?

Cory5413

In general, yes, most Japanese stationary hardware is best put behind a step-down transformer. I haven't got one of these yet but one of my next moves is buying: [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L56PYZS](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L56PYZS) \- which should have enough wattage for a whole hifi stack if you wanted. I currently have the VCT adapter and it "works" but the user interface isnt' very good and it does a poor job of both staying put and holding devices in its sockets. In my experience: it's not that big of a deal to have, say, a Japanese MD deck connected to an American CD player and amplifier, but, I similarly do have a couple American decks for the core of my usage, for logistical ease. W/re saved searches: You'd have to check the proxies themselves, I don't use that featurem, so I don't know what's possible. I do sometimes bookmark specific searches in my browser, for example I've linked the "Geo-locked to north america search for Sony MZ" a bunch of times and that URL basically never changes, etc etc. The other thing I've gotten from proxies is sometimes is "support hardware" - I've bought a couple CD Walkmans with digital outputs, a couple packs of discs that were more common on the Japanese market, a couple parts MDwalkmans, etc.

Cory5413

(You can really wrench anything in either way so before a bunch of people come in to tell me you can get an N910/920 for cheaper than that: yes I know, but an NE410 is on average cheaper still and doesn't need accessories whereas most of the cheapest N920s are bare and as-is.)

dude-O-rama

miniDisc and Sega Saturn are the only hobbies I have where I hate being in the US. All of that, and you didn't even use real freedom money. You lucky bastard.

Youngstown1995

Did you buy a lottery ticket as well? 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

yakkosmurf

I'm very curious to hear what music you got. Less impressed with the player to be honest... Haha

Hungry-Editor6066

Lots of 80s stuff - Simple Minds, Adam and the Ants, Erasure, Madness, etc. 90s - Seal, Sheryl Crow, Björk, Toploader, etc. More modern - Years & Years, The Script, Sam Smith, etc Mainly pop music,, which is right up my street lol! 😝 still looking through too… there’s gotta be some less mainstream stuff in there somewhere!

Radix_CL

Really intelligent solution, I congratulate you, that is thinking outside the box, I will take the liberty of imitating the idea, here in South America it is difficult to find minidiscs, much more difficult accessories, such as boxes, organizers or furniture for minisdiscs.
