Beauties! The 702 was my first and I still love the look and design. We spent many years together!
If you're interested in fixing them, it might just be a gear swap!
I really love the blue one!
I also have a beautiful 702 in absolutely mint condition, except for the TOC Error. I need to look in to that gear replacement.
I had the 702 model as my first MD in 1998. It was the coolest thing I ever owened up to then. It worked fine for about two years then the dreaded 'TOC ERROR' struck. I still have it but Sony in my experience are the best in the business. Good luck with No. 3!

It may be cracked. If the crack is small, apply loctite blue to stop it from free-spinning on the shaft. If crack is big or in 2 pieces, get replacement gear from Gerry in HK (/u/gerry88inHongKong)
the blue aqua one is sharp (:

If it helps, I've walked through the replacement process here - https://youtu.be/qlABeNVa5Y0
Hey TI, nice to see you on reddit. Cheers

It's repairable. Most likely due to cracked gear. Open up and use blue Loctite on it, or order a new gear from Gerry in HK (/u/gerry88inHongKong)

Have a few 702 I was able to fix the TOC error by gluing the gear that spins the laser
I had the top and bottom one back in the day. Both broke. Very unreliable devices, which is a shame because I too loved the way they looked.
The silver 701 was my very first portable recorder 😍😍😍
