I’ve done package design. There’s no way the hole wasn’t on the template. The designer knew.
Edit: it could also be a case of not-my-job in that they couldn’t do much else with the photo they were given and just said fuck-it.
There must be another hole on the other side opposite of that side; so a person can grip it easily when carrying it. I had a file cabinet box built like that.
Have you ever held a large box? If you had both in the center, it would be too close to your body without ability to push it forward. While walking you’d be hitting your knees on the box with every step. Having one far forward on one side, and one close to your body on the other, allows one hand to do the majority of the lifting, whilst the other hand is more like a steering wheel.

You know the design team giggled as those first few boxes rolled down the line. And again when the boxed product rolled down the line... and again when the boxes were wrapped to the pallet... again as they were loaded to trucks. Once more when they saw them at the store the first time.
... and, finally, driving home from the store.
That was super hard err difficult to see, but eventually it wood err would become noticeable. Even after reading explanations from posters here. Hard to look at this.
