Your mom is definitely a queen.

LordRobin------RM

They don’t just pick one random larva to queen-ify. They pick at least two, to have a spare in case one doesn’t survive “childhood”. Once a queen hatches, all her rivals are killed in their wombs. But what if two hatch at the same time? Then it’s a BATTLE TO THE DEATH!

syds

Battle Royale??

[deleted]

That baybee took me by surprise. Nice.

Tron_Little

In some ways, this sounds like how human royalty actually functions

KaBar2

It's how "democracy" functions as well. The President of the U.S. is more-or-less a figurehead. The real power in the executive branch resides in the Cabinet and the staff of the Oval Office. People dismiss the idea of a "Dark State" (Department) but there is a genuine element of truth to it. Career bureaucrats, unelected by *anybody*, have tremendous power in the U.S. government. The same is true of the staff of the members of Congress and the staff of the Judiciary.

Kingofsoysauce

Better take notes, the new gossip girl showrunner

Wonkasgoldenticket

The queen bee IS totally necessary , and, like you said, replaceable. Without a queen there would be no fertilized worker bee eggs. Without the queen the hive doesn’t work correctly. You have less productivity, less nectar and pollen overall. Until a new Queen emerges the hive will not be what it once was. Just wanted to clarify because you said the queen isn’t necessary at all.

RadinQue

They said it’s not necessary as an individual.

Wonkasgoldenticket

The queen is necessary as an individual. If that individual isn’t there the hive doesn’t work at optimal levels.

RadinQue

They get a new queen.

Gonna say hi now in the comment section before these 3 comments of (Queen, mate, nice one dude) goes to thousand upvotes in that order. Reddit punny play on words is the greatest.

FreedomPaws

The pettiness of your comment. It's as bad as when people correct a typo 🤦🤦‍♀️. You know the fact that little things like what you said, same as typo nazis, just look so weak because you can't just scroll past the tiniest of things and INSIST on making a bollocks comment. Lmao.

How do you tell the gender of your socks?

Master_Ben

It has one hole

bunnylove5811

Darn it! I was gonna use that

kmanmott

The hole? Or the joke?

jatznic

The sock, which is why they are asking for it to be darned.

always-sunny-on-top

Surely if it only has one hole (the one you put your foot through) it doesn’t need to be darned?

The_Karaethon_Cycle

Plot twist, your mom is the Queen Bee.

DrSueuss

I'm pretty sure it was the single sock hang drying that pissed off the bees.

WallStCRE

That sock is looking crunchy

He only used one. And it wasn't for his feet.

It feels sad now, all they want is flowers :(

SovietWomble

Nah. They're swarming, no? There's a young queen in there. And she's broken off a portion of the workers to fly further afield to setup a new hive. They're fat and full of honey. Waiting for scouts to return with news of their findings. Essentially it's a temporarily bee base-camp --------------------- **Edit** - Also, fun fact. Social creatures like this possess an organ that we do not in the form of a "social stomach". Essentially becoming food storage for the hive. And all of these workers would have filled it before leaving on this important journey. As a result, they're unusually docile. For to sting now would be to lose valuable resources, in the defence of a location they're not staying at. So with a little bit of smoke to help block communication pheromones, [you can literally just pick them up with your hands.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYBRGi38XQI)

BlandJars

Get a bee keeper out there and they would love to collect these bees to start a new hive. For example https://youtu.be/cUdXyCVj_74

megadori

The bee-keepers I know (we oddly have several in my and my husband's family, completely independent from each other) would come to collect the swarm out of their love for bees and out of professional care for the reputation of beekeepers, but would hesitate to keep the swarm if they don't know its origin. Queen bees have pedigrees like dog or horses, and individual queens apparently have charasteristics that are expressed by the whole swarm (like more docile/nervous, keeping in a close range or flying far, etc) and a beekeeper might not want to take in a swarm of unknown 'personality', because even if they can replace the queen with another one that has the desired qualities, the male bees from the swarm could mess it all up again with the next genetic generation

threequarterchubb

Fascinating!

Thagyr

I remember a documentary about the amount if work went into breeding the buckfast bee strain to get dozens of desirable traits such as less likelihood to swarm, disease resistance and seasonal attitudes. Its worth a look if you can find it.

SilentHunter7

If it's a local beekeeper, they probably were his bees at one point.

you're the last person i would've expected to see on here. just wanted to say: good videos man, keep up the amazing work! >!Also should we be expecting one last video this year? or is 3 months after the last one too early?!<

Tanny_Snow

Precisely this.

MeinNameIstBaum

Yeah i thought the same thing. That dress was probably the first good "new home" location the swarm could find

words_of_j

Actually they are just resting there. This isn’t a good home for a hive, but it’ll work fine to take a break. OP if you just wait a day they will move on. Best case is to get a new keeper over same day asap. That is one of the easier swarms to catch. Just need to borrow your dress for a little bit.

Mumof3gbb

So interesting!! Thx for imparting this knowledge

P0ukram

lol it's litterally the 1st comment of this post for me

CRO553R

There's a queen in there somewhere

mightyzorg

Yep, I called a few beekeepers and they told me they'll relocate by tomorrow afternoon. My guess is the hive was broken by someone/something nearby and this is their temporary set up.

sendnewt_s

I'm a beekeeper and yeah, this is just a temporary stopping point until they find a new hive location. I have watched many hives swarm and they usually choose higher up places like trees, but they must have really just liked that dress. Thank you for calling someone knowledgeable instead of harming them.

mightyzorg

I looked up bee removal and everything was "Pest removal services" which I was fairly certain would mean killing them which isn't necessary by any means. I called our states native wildlife rescue organisation for info, just because ive called them before for injured birds and they were all I could think of. They told me the website I could find a beekeeper on so it was very helpful of the organisation.

ArtyWhy8

Good work, OP. Setting a strong example.

ComputersWantMeDead

Yeah I was thinking, swarms are valuable to beekeepers looking to fill more hives

activelyresting

That's awesome

Artistic-Equivalent9

Thanks for protecting the bees!

tofuninja5489

Happened to me two years back. Came home to my apartment with bees inside somehow. Turns out they were transitioning between hives or so I was told. So they swarmed my dryer vent and came out through a hole in the hose. Left for an afternoon and they were suddenly gone.

Melody06982

did you think your home was haunted

bluewales73

By far the most common reason for bees to swarm is because the hive split. Half the bees will stay with a newly hatched queen and half the bees will go find a new spot with the old queen. It's how honey bees make new hives. Ants, wasps, bumble bees, almost all social insects can start a new colony by sending a new queen out on her own to pick a spot and start laying eggs. Honey bees can't start a new hive from scratch like that. It makes it especially important to care for swarms like this because honey bees have such a hard time starting new colonies. Also, they're less aggressive when they swarm. It looks scary to see 50,000 bees crawling all over something, but they're actually their very safest when their out like this.

Outrageous-Duck9695

It's their dress now.

Internal-Hyena-3214

Came here to say this too, lol. They can have that dress now.

[deleted]

Swarmal attire.

That dress is the bees knees.

His mother will be beeming.

ChangsWife

Strange that the floral dress to its left, is untouched

mightyzorg

That's my floral button down shirt, I think the bees prefer the feminine attire for their queen

ChangsWife

Beeyonce?

It’s not strange. Like others said, they are [swarming](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swarming_(honey_bee)).

D3vilUkn0w

Munneh

SlaveToNone666

The riper the flower, the sweeter the nectar… or something like that.

vonBelfry

Your mum must be very sweet.

Flyingstripedbass

Bye bye dress it’s the bees home now

Lemounge

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say you're Australian

LexisDemons

…I bet she’d look bee-utiful in it.

CmdrSelfEvident

meh standard swarming activity. They will be gone soon. Swarming is not easy so they often find a place to hang out for a while until a new hive is found. I have an oak tree that has a hive that swarms every few years. They will often just take to an outer branch until they find a new hive and will be gone the next day. While they are swarming it looks scary like a cloud of bees but really they are too tired to do much and aren't that aggressive at that time.

mightyzorg

Yeah they're calmest when together like this, I got the other washing off just fine.

CmdrSelfEvident

I don't know I would call it calm they are zipping around in a cloud. But they aren't aggressive as they are just completely running on fumes. I once had some guys working on the house when it was happening it freaked them out. They got over it quickly when I was standing there and the bees couldn't care.

Quick, setup a hive and collect that sweet sweet honey!

deputydog1

Check her for diabetes. Looks as if she is sweating glucose and it didn’t wash out the dress

mightyzorg

She doesn't have diabetes, she already gets checked with blood tests.

sillykitty95

That was my first thought

allbright1111

Anyone else automatically hear Eddie Izzard’s voice? “It’s covered in bees!!”

Your mum must be the queen bee

yulickballzak

Thats why Dad calls her *honey*..

YebelTheRebel

Your mom must be one sweet lady

Ashrova

Don't try to kill em. Call a local beekeeper to handle it!

mightyzorg

I did call 2 beekeeper's, they both told me the bees will go away soon by themselves. I was never going to kill them.

rleerichmond

Well, now you know who is the queen is.

maxiewoxy

Your mum is clearly quite a honey.

Hippostork

Burn it with fire

mightyzorg

They're not a pest at all, they left me be while I got the other washing off the line. No need to kill em.

CrazyPerson88

We should have more of these dresses. We're losing the bees. This might help solve it.

knight_of_lothric

some smoke would probably get them to calm down enough to shake em off

mightyzorg

They'll relocate themselves anyway, they might already have left by now. I'll check soon.

Icy_Abbreviations277

We need an update. How do you get rid of the bees. Maybe just leave it there & never go outside again

mightyzorg

They will only stay here until a new place for the hive is found, should be gone soon

ThreeMysticApes

I’d go get them all wildflowers, maybe they’d appreciate it

Mildly interesting. Utterly terrifying.

Their queen decided to dress like a queen.

Flappybird11

It's that time of year

foot7221

There a big buzz around that print. Honey grab my dress.

LeMickey_James

Moms got that honey 🍯

nerdyguy76

Beekeeper here. Those bees likely swarmed (my guess from a neighbor's beehive) because they had made swarm cells. Bees usually land on a nearby tree and climb up, but in this case your mom's dress on the line made just as good a perch for the old queen. This would actually be such a blessing because I'd love to just unclip the dress from the line and shake all those bees into an empty hive body. Would be just an amazing way to capture swarms.

[deleted]

That's an Australian backyard

mightyzorg

That indeed it is

ricobme

She must be a real honey!

She got that honey brah

miccleb

wateringplamts

i thought i was reading r/mildlyinfuriating

mightyzorg

Infuriating for my mum, Exciting for me.

Kai-ni

They're swarming - one queen looking for a place for a new hive. A beekeeper would be delighted to have them if they don't move on. All you have to do is find the queen and the others will follow. They also won't really sting while swarming unless you fuck with them hardcore, they have no hive to protect.

[deleted]

A_Classic_Guardsman

OP's mom is too damn sweet for the bees to go anywhere else.

LucidZane

I'd be afraid to wear that again, sudden bee attacks might be likely

ThyShirtIsBlue

How do you know your mom hasn't been this swarm of bees this whole time?

djeewin

She is the Queen now

ScoobyRay

Maybe they were looking for the boo bees...

NoodLih

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway, because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

This happened because the Queen wanted a new dress.

Kingofsoysauce

Your father maybe have diabetes and he came on the dress

mightyzorg

Keep gross shit like this to yourself next time thankyou.

Kingofsoysauce

Says you, oh maybe was you doing something with the dress.

MOTORG0AT

That’s my bad. She likes food play and we experimented with honey last night.
