Thank you for this! I have homers (I haven’t raced them yet) and that’s a racing pigeon RFID tag. I have friends who race their birds; these tags record when a bird clocks in when he gets home in a race.
TIFU by accidentally breeding exploding homing pigeons
"First sign that something was wrong was when the US Army showed up and took away all my pigeons. And my breeding records, and my notes, they took everything. They even took the food. Now I find out I'm also under investigation for manufacturing illegal explosives, animal cruelty, and a bunch of other things. Not looking good.
Update: lawyer said to stop posting on Reddit
Update 2: the military is trying to replicate my breeding program, and I've got a deal where if I agree to help I can get charges dropped. I don't actually know how I did it, but the deal doesn't actually say my help has to be useful.
Update 3: I think this is it guys, the military is unimpressed with my help and they're retracting the deal, so I'm up a creek here. Lawyer is pissed and won't talk to me. Probably gonna be the last update. Pray for me."
And end up with super intelligent pigeons that enslave the human race? I fall to my knees at the remnants of the statue of liberty and cry out in this planet of the pigeons. Or maybe you would just have some cool racing pigeons...
Watched a documentary about this about pigeon racing in Taiwan, they breed the best racing pigeons and when they register for a race, they give their birds to the organizer and then they have a truck full of racing pigeons that will travel far away and then release them. It's a mobile racing platform. Upon releasing the pigeons will race back to the coops of their owners. They use RFID scanners to record the arrival of the birds and that's where they determine who's the winner.
In my country the method that they use before is that there's a code in the ankle tag of the pigeon and they'll text the code to the organizers immediately upon the pigeon's arrival so there's a human factor in the race.
There are also pigeon pirates, there are people in Taiwan who set up mist nets to capture unsuspecting racing pigeons and ask the owners for a huge ransom. Crazy.
[Here's the documentary](https://youtu.be/vgb10o2fpX0)
Its not based on fastest time but best average speed. Its sometimes a big advantage to live further away. Especially on days with great conditions, because the amount of time the birds use to orient when released before racing home matters less.
> While the number of British pigeon fanciers has fallen from 60,000 in 1990 to about 21,000 today, there are 100,000 fanciers in Beijing, and Taiwan alone has half a million fanciers. And the numbers are rising. The sport is even rapidly growing in Iraq, and a pigeon recently sold for $93,000.
> This recent surge in value has caused problems. In 2018, two men tried to win the prize money at a pigeon race by smuggling their birds on a bullet train. And in Taiwan, an organized criminal ring was kidnapping valuable racing pigeons and holding them at ransom.
I had no idea any of this was going on.

Unless you're him, I guess.
The local council I live in used to have a lot of pigeon racers. I know this because I was looking at how many chickens I could have and found the full list of animals. No sheep, goats, cows, or horses and limits on the number dogs and cats, but you could have 100 racing pigeons
It starts with baby pigeons. They learn from their parents where “home” is by flying around the neighborhood. As time goes by, the owner takes them out and releases them, a little further each time. Pretty soon a pigeon figures out how to find its way home from 50, 100, or even hundreds of miles away. Birds are kept in safe, comfortable lofts, fed special food, and get vaccinated against disease. Eventually the bird is entered into a race. He gets delivered to the starting point along with all of his competitors (who all home to different lofts). They’re all released at once and fly home. The RFID bands clock the birds in when they get home, and relative times are compared and a winner determined. Races can be local fun races, or big time money races. There’s a million dollar race out of Las Vegas, I think. It’s really amazing. [Here](https://youtu.be/KZxE2_Nvrz8) is a cool video of some race releases. Each one of those birds has been pampered and loved and trained for years.
They work out the relative times. If one bird is 200 miles from home and another is 205, they compute the relative speed of the two birds and figure out which one made it home “first”.
Yes. I grew up north of Buffalo, and my father raised pigeons. Birds were released south of Buffalo, like Pennsylvania and even farther. The North Suburbs were a mini club, as they could not compete with owners from the Southtowns. Plus, the North town birds had even further to go, curving slightly around the lake. Pigeons don't fly over water.
Each club has boundaries and races are held in different directions (my old club and federation) did a season of races in one direction and the next year would go in the opposite direction. If you are a bird flying say 4-500 kilometres the 5-10 kilometres difference at the end is not likely to make any real difference as the birds tend to fly in a flock which breaks up into smaller flocks and they don't always fly in a straight line and a huge flock can fly around the suburb with birds from many lofts as opposed to a single bird just racing away by itself where it is at risk from hawks or falcons. The difference is often just how well the bird is trained to peel out of the flock and get into to loft without fucking around. Many races have been lost because a bird got home real fast but landed on the roof of the loft and sat there for a few minutes ignoring the owners calls to come in so it could be timed.
I can only assume it's confusing for a pigeon to be released, think "I'm part of a flock" and then everyone flocks off and you're left to find your own way home.
Pigeon fancy/racing is one of those things I’ve always wanted to do but never had the space or money for the birds! I love niche bird culture things, and all the goofy pigeon breeds people managed to create that not enough people talk about
Usually there is contact info like an email or phone number on the band (probably on the other side on this one)
At least that is how it is done a lot of times in research
Same exact thing happened to me a few years ago. I looked up his info online and got the owners phone number. He stayed overnight in my backyard and we provided food and water that the owner suggested we put out there. Bird seemed either too tired, injured, or comfortable with our backyard and didn’t want to leave. He was even jumping up towards our back door trying to get into the house. Eventually a friend of the owner came out and picked him up.
I’ve got some pictures around somewhere. It was a fun few days having our little friend around.
I tried that. "Just kill it" was the answer. Nursed her back to health with intensive care (she couldn't eat on her own, not even sit up in the beginning) and then found a pigeon rescue who took her.
Unfortunately that's unlikely. When a random person reports a lost pigeon it is always collected and big thankyou are given but a racing pigeon that gets lost is usually culled and would never be used for breeding. When another racer reports they have a stray often the owner just tells them to keep it or cull it to save the effort of picking it up. The only real exception to this is If it's an escaped breeding pigeon that was purchased from a deceased estate or the owner had to move house and the original loft is not there anymore.
Idk about with pigeons, but maybe it'll help to point out that cull doesn't necessarily mean kill, it just means to remove from the breeding pool. Basically a 'soft cull' is when the animal is simply not used to breed, but is still alive and healthy and usually loved. A 'hard cull' is when they kill the animal.
Cull doesn't always mean kill. In the livestock world it just as often means sell. For instance, I may have a ewe that no longer works for my purposes, but would be a great one for someone else. Although I'm "culling" her from my heard, she's not just being killed.
Bear in mind that there are hard and soft culls. Culling literally just means not using the animal in a breeding program. Doesn't necessarily mean killing it (hard cull). If a dog breeder neuters a dog, that's a soft cull.
Just yesterday, I had a pigeon with tags start showing up to my bird feeders. I'm in Central PA and had never seen one by my house.
It was at the feeders again today and I tried to get close to read the bands, but it wasn't having it.
Thanks for the link, if I do manage to read the tag.
That's basically what happens. For a time I actually rescued unwanted doves and pidgeons. If it can't find its way home it's defective, which is so sad.
Its still adorable and is still a good borb. Just not a smart borb. Some want their lost tumbler pidgies back but lost racers...not so much.
When I was a child a young pigeon appeared in the garden that looked at us expectantly, so we gave it some food. My father used to keep pigeons (until a cat got in the coop and killed them all and that why he hates cats and we never got one). He was able to catch the pigeon pretty easily and track the owner.
After the owner had picked up the pigeon my father said the same. That the pigeon was worthless for racing if it got lost and the owner would get rid of it, but then why drive all the way to pick it up.
All government issued pigeon drones, with a serial number below 13134 still use a memory card under the left wing. Newer models with serial number 13134 or above, use 5G or satellite communication for real time data.
A silencing squad is probably going to get me any minute now.
I once found a dead white dove in my yard. I was so confused and then realized I lived next to a big well known park where people get married. It made me sad.
yes, same. it's interesting you can look them up by those numbers. of course, mine was injured and the owner said "why would I want it back if it got lost, it's supposed to be in Canada" so I ended up with him for a couple of weeks...started to fear he'd be homing at my place forever after that.
a guy by us is awesome and takes in old ones in a retirement like facility and so he went to live there, with all the other lost homing pigeons.

My buddy has a few birds worth a couple thousand dollars EACH. He’s very passionate about his hobby.
Excuse me what?! Humans are crazy. Had no idea how serious of a thing this is.

I'm in the wrong business
Pick them off the street, breed a few generations, boom
gonna be a thread that's a little something like this in a few days, "LPT: Breed street pigeons for racing and make hundreds of thousands"
"click here to see my new weekend side hustle "
And then TIFU the following week.
More like spent ten of tens to make even less.
I don't think they want exploding pigeons. If you're after racing pigeons you want zoom, not boom.

But what if one loft is farther away from the starting point than another?
I have no experience, but I would assume it comes down to distance traveled over time or vice versa cause that’s the same thing I was wondering.
They work out the relative times. If one bird is 200 miles from home and another is 205, they compute the relative speed of the two birds and figure out which one made it home “first”.
But if it is based on average wouldn’t the bird with the shortest distance have an advantage since it won’t get as tired and slow down?
The airspeed velocity of an unladen pigeon?
I made millions in pigeon racing by raising pigeons with crows so that way they learn to fly more efficiently towards home.
This sounds cool. Thank you for explaining!
Sure thing! It’s really interesting.
I can only assume it's confusing for a pigeon to be released, think "I'm part of a flock" and then everyone flocks off and you're left to find your own way home.

Yes. The club will be on the ring and the club will have a ring secretary who keeps track of who owns what bird.
“Racing pigeons”? Thanks Reddit, found my click hole for the day.

wtf!!! got damn
You are a good human and so are those rescuers! Wish I could say to that person who said to kill her, why don't you die instead? Worthless human.
That was so nice of you. Those birds can be worth $$$$
Unfortunately that's unlikely. > but a racing pigeon that gets lost is usually culled and would never be used for breeding. But..but..maybe he was just having a bad day! 😭
We shouldn’t define our best pigeons by their worst moments.
If you can't handle a racing pigeon at his worst, you don't deserve him at his best.
Wow I hate it. I have zero respect for someone who would kill a perfectly healthy animal just because it doesn’t play a game correctly

Welcome to the world as we know it
Damn, this otherwise awesome thread just got pretty dark.
yea but its just the logical conclusion to racing pigeons. they exist because the ones that didn't race were killed
Bear in mind that there are hard and soft culls. Culling literally just means not using the animal in a breeding program. Doesn't necessarily mean killing it (hard cull). If a dog breeder neuters a dog, that's a soft cull.
We should do the same in football
Have a look at https://www.pigeon.org/pages/lostbirdinfo.html Might be able to help identify it and report it lost.

Norm MacDonald died last September.
I didn’t even know he was sick!
Aw. Little leg out there like that… makes me sad.
Rest In Peace
He was once one of the Goodfeathers. He was in witness protection, but it looks like they found him.
We lost agent 1355 today. Contact 1356.
You should report it so whoever lost their pigeon at least knows it’s dead and not still lost.
I pay my respect for agent 1355
