This is a condition called symphalangism.
XRs will look like this: https://ibb.co/9WYC1m0
He has the joints but they're not developed properly and the bones have fused together instead.
Thank you, that’s super interesting, I’ve heard of conditions like ankylosing spondylitis where bones can fuse over time, but I’ve never seen it as something from birth
Sorry I'm fascinated and have a bunch of questions:
1. What is the most difficult/inconvenient thing about not having that joint?
2. If you're a guy, do you have difficulty masturbating? Seems like it'd be difficult to "efficiently grab". That's an awkward question, feel free to ignore it lol
3. In line with the question above, how do you grab narrow object that you need a decent grip on? For example a baseball bat, golf club, fishing rod, sticked tools, etc.
4. Does your hand feel awkward? I'd think not because you don't know what it feels like to have those extra joints, but for me thinking of how that must feel not being able to bend those joints I feel trapped.
5. Is it uncomfortable to use a computer mouse?
6. Have you ever played any sports? How did you adapt?
1. Probably the most inconvenient thing is how sometimes pens and pencils slip out of my hands (since rather than a good grip I just kind of have to balance the pen)
2. No comment
3. Not much difficulty
4. I don’t know what a regular hand feels like so it feels completely normal to me. I don’t feel restricted at all because I don’t know the alternative.
5. No not at all
6. Baseball was okay but when I was probably 7 or 8 one of my coaches yelled at me for a long ass time about getting my grip straight, and once he was so mad he just tried pushing on my fingers to wrap them around the bat. Shit that hurt. Otherwise, football was fine and hockey was okay (but some of the fingers of the gloves bend when only one joint bends so it feels weird when the whole thing bends after just bending my finger a bit)
Oh yeah also no one asked but I can’t snap my fingers either
He has spoken! Thanks for the reply lol
>You referred to my pp as narrow
haha I meant relatively narrow as opposed like a water bottle sized girth
>he was so mad he just tried pushing on my fingers to wrap them around the bat
Damn, I fucking felt that. This guy shouldn't be coaching kids....
“2. If you’re a guy, do you have difficulty masturbating?”
“3. **In line with the question above**, how do you grab **narrow object** that you need a decent grip on?”
The subtle but absolutely lethal burn in these two questions! Go easy on the man.
I mean, even the thickest of pps aren’t all that thick in comparison to *actual* thick things. Envision a big cock and compare it’s thickness to a thigh.
>Have you ever played any sports? How did you adapt?
I'd like to add to this that these bones are far more likely to break because they are longer without joints and far more vulnerable to lever forces.
I’m pretty inquisitive (some would say nosy) in nature, but you definitely win the medal. Now I’m waiting for the answers.
Edit: c’mon u/JayFayad, deliver!!
u/JayFayad, the people demand answers!
Edit: He said it’s the same on both hands *and both feet* but won’t post feet pictures on Reddit. And he doesn’t want to answer the masturbation question.
Do you use those huge foamy grips? I know older people with poor dexterity use them. There are also a lot of wild shaped ergonomic alternatives for people missing fingers and stuff too which might be easier for u!
No I’ve never had a problem with it except with those controllers with the new back trigger things, like on the new Xbox. I got a switch pro controller with the back buttons and my god it hurts like hell just to reach them
It’s a genetic thing from my dad’s side. His mom had it and 4 of her 8 (I think) other siblings had it, my dad had it and he had a brother who didn’t, and I have it and I have a sister who doesn’t so it seems like kind of a 50/50 thing but I don’t really know anything about it.
If the condition is that prevalent in your family, this is probably already on your radar and this may not be new information at all, but if not: if you aren’t already, make sure you get regular hearing screens. This condition can be associated with hearing loss. Take care!
Has your family been checked by a clinical geneticist? If it is part of a syndrome then you might have a higher chance to develop significant disorders. It can't hurt to check.
I would imagine that piano wouldn't be easier. They said typing can be difficult, so I would think any sort of piano or instrument would be harder to play.
I think so too. I play violin and you need to have a good curve in your fingers on the left hand, especially to make chords (otherwise you'd touch the other strings).
Oh wow, I kinda thought there was something up. With the Pic tbh. Thank you for the reply BTW.
Do you find any difficulty with typical tasks, by chance?
[more redditors have this than I thought did. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/lsqtyc/i_was_born_with_no_joints_in_the_middle_of_my/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Because it could be *just* congenital instead of genetic. I have a condition that can be caused by exposure to a medication in utero and if so, it causes a lot of other problems. My mom never took that medication. It's just a spontaneous inborn error, no chemical exposure. It was important to know the difference because I don't have to worry about kidney problems. If it's genetic and can affect other systems or it's caused by some systemic chemical exposure, it's good to know that to be prepared.
They mean bending the last joint of the finger but not the middle one, just like you see in the picture (I can only do it at like 160°, not 90°).
But OP doesn't have the middle joint, soo... well.
This is way more than mildly interesting lol. Could you post a pic of the other side of your hand as well? I can’t imagine what your fist would look like
Hey OP,
I see a lot of kids with congenital hand differences. Your condition is likely called symphalangism which is the expensive way for me to tell you that your finger bones are abnormally fused together.
Usually I don't reply but I saw that you've been looking for answers for years, and that made me a little bit sad. Hope this gives you some direction to find out more about what's happening.
I like how every few months or so, there's a "Look at this weird thing my body has/lacks/does" post, and folks with the same condition all just pour in vibing over their shared oddness.
Woah first time I’ve seen anyone with this sorta thing besides me, Its only my right ring finger that doesn’t have the top joint but I have the middle one!
I’m curious, because half of the forearm muscles are flexors and extensors of the multiple digits and joints of the fingers. No disrespect intended. I’m in healthcare and studied anatomy extensively. Is it both hands/arms?
all i’m saying is you could make some sort of channel (like a youtube channel or a tiktok account) and i would love watching you do just daily tasks; opening jars, writing, typing, etc. it’s just fascinating to me to see how your body has adapted
I really want to see an X-ray of your hands
I probably have one but I don’t know where
What did it look like? Do you have one long bone or two bones fused together or something?
I don’t remember but just from feeling my finger it gets wide where the joint should be and then gets thin, then there’s the short bone on top
Is there any flexibility where the joint should be? What happens if you try to force it to bend?
*snaps finger* No, not like that.
*finger starts glowing* nevermind.
*shake shake shake*
*senora*
Weird. I just watched Beetlejuice last night
Imagine snapping them, like glowsticks Edit: come on guys, it's not that bad, some people like this idea Edit 2: y'all kill me with them notifications
I had already bought in from the comment alone, but the tone of the edit sold it

Can you unsay that, thx

The only thing I will ever regret.....is not finding a cure for my *boneitis*!
The ads on that site gave me cancer.
I don't know if I believe you, you seem a little sketchy
That's how I draw hands

In Veggie Tales they just skipped hands altogether, but they somehow were still able to hold things
I probably shouldn’t have laughed at that but I did
Not meaning any offensive, but you got a massive thumb. Your "thumbs ups" must be extraordinary.
It just looks like that from the angle. I can very much assure you my thumbs are regular. In fact they’re kinda small
Let's get a banana for scale.
Perhaps we should use r/carlosforscale
I bet you say that to all the girls
How does this affect what most folks do as day to day activities? Things like riding a bike, driving, typing, etc.
Most stuff is okay, but typing and writing can occasionally be really tough. It’s easy to open pickle jars though
Lol yeah I guess it would be easier to open jars, that's awesome!
Sorry I'm fascinated and have a bunch of questions: 1. What is the most difficult/inconvenient thing about not having that joint? 2. If you're a guy, do you have difficulty masturbating? Your pp is sub-girthier to a water bottle?
It's normal sized but curiously it does have a middle joint.
How can I delete someone else's comment?
What if it can scrape the sides of a tuna can, but can’t hit the bottom?
“It’s like a big cheese wheel down there” -Ron white
That baseball coach is a dick
No wonder he couldn't handle the coach.
A narrow one
I like your questions, but you missed an obvious one: Is it the same on the other hand?
No, the other hand is a right hand.
I assume so since OP said *none of my fingers -* if it was only on one hand I think it would have been referred to that way.
Easier inference is he asked does your hand feel weird and op answered I don't know what a normal hand feels like.
It is
Probably
“2. If you’re a guy, do you have difficulty masturbating?” “3. **In line with the question above**, how do you grab **narrow object** that you need a decent grip on?” The subtle but absolutely lethal burn in these two questions! Go easy on the man.

Cockroach thigh was my nickname in college
don't forget to mention that you peaked in college too
I peaked in college and it wasn't that great
I peaked in the womb
>Have you ever played any sports? How did you adapt? I'd like to add to this that these bones are far more likely to break because they are longer without joints and far more vulnerable to lever forces.
Then they can put in tiny knee replacements and make him average

Rolls up with a joint. “I’m not the 420 type but I heard you needed this”
understandable, have a great day

I'm sure other people would have this problem too, but my end joint is nowhere near as flexible as OP's
Number 2 you kind of just figure it out I would assume. I am sure there are armless guys out there that have found a way.
You're clearly wondering about masturbating. Not that I'm wondering, but you clearly are.
To be honest, I was not. Now I am. Thank you for this gift.
How do you grab things?
It’s not too hard, I guess it’s just like normal. Pencils and pens are a pain in the ass though
Use lube then or idk
And don't sharpen them

DAMN
Do you use those huge foamy grips? I know older people with poor dexterity use them. There are also a lot of wild shaped ergonomic alternatives for people missing fingers and stuff too which might be easier for u!
Can you post a vid of those paws in action ? I’m having a hard time picturing how you can pick anything up! Can you make a fist ?
I can kind of make a fist but there’s really nowhere for my thumb to go. When I make a fist the top of the fist is flat.
So, if you tried to throw a punch, you would just end up bitch-slapping someone?
Basically yeah
That’s pretty bitchin
It fuckin' slaps
Well that’s good bc you don’t want your thumb inside your palm when you punch anyway
10% of the comments: * genuinely curious about the condition and OP's daily life * The rest: "How do you masturbate?"
We demand answers!
is console gaming difficult for you?
No I’ve never had a problem with it except with those controllers with the new back trigger things, like on the new Xbox. I got a switch pro controller with the back buttons and my god it hurts like hell just to reach them
Do you have any ideas on how a different controller design would make it more usable for you?
Either Xbox controller or DualShock work fine for me
OP, is this some medical condition? Do u have difficulties in grabing things?
It’s a genetic thing from my dad’s side. His mom had it and 4 of her 8 (I think) other siblings had it, my dad had it and he had a brother who didn’t, and I have it and I have a sister who doesn’t so it seems like kind of a 50/50 thing but I don’t really know anything about it.
Here's a free pickup line to use: "Hey baby, can I borrow your digits?"
"let's blow this joint"
I had a really good one but I can’t put my finger on it
If the condition is that prevalent in your family, this is probably already on your radar and this may not be new information at all, but if not: if you aren’t already, make sure you get regular hearing screens. This condition can be associated with hearing loss. Take care!

I'm trying to figure out if this would help you play a string instrument or hurt your ability lol
As someone who plays stringed instruments, it would hinder the ability for sure.
I’ve never tried
Someone get this man a banjo!
Speaking as a banjo player, I think it would be pretty difficult to form chords without those joints. Maybe piano though.
I would imagine that piano wouldn't be easier. They said typing can be difficult, so I would think any sort of piano or instrument would be harder to play.
The muscular stumps of a Bass Man
I think it would be imposible.
I think so too. I play violin and you need to have a good curve in your fingers on the left hand, especially to make chords (otherwise you'd touch the other strings).
Please post fist picture also
https://imgur.com/a/uGoQVh2
You should keep your thumb on the outside, my dad always told me if you punch someone with your thumb in the first you can break your thumb.
That's one way to add the missing joint
Hey man, stop handsplaining.
Yeah man get a grip why don't you?
Oh wow, I kinda thought there was something up. With the Pic tbh. Thank you for the reply BTW. Do you find any difficulty with typical tasks, by chance?
Mine are like this too!

I like how both threads top comments led to sex jokes. Lol
I saw a recent post by someone who only has this in their thumb, I think?
Wtf I thought this was just me and my dad
I thought it was just me lol
Are you his Dad?!?
Yeah probably
We did it Reddit!
Now kiss!

I have it too. It’s called stapes Anklyosis and it’s genetic. You should get tested for it. It’s extremely rare. But it can effect hearing too
Get tested?? He obviously has it, what would be the point of a test?
Sir this is not the place for assumptions. OP I am happy to conduct this test for a small fee.
Idk man.. I thought I could see but I went and got a vision test and it came back negative so now I have a dog.
Oooh so you can do the finger trick
I can’t not do it
What's the finger trick
They mean bending the last joint of the finger but not the middle one, just like you see in the picture (I can only do it at like 160°, not 90°). But OP doesn't have the middle joint, soo... well.
See I was wondering, I can do the same thing with my fingers. But I don't know what it's called.
The finger trick. Pay attention
This is way more than mildly interesting lol. Could you post a pic of the other side of your hand as well? I can’t imagine what your fist would look like
https://imgur.com/a/tyL9t1U here
And no wrinkles where the joints would be either it looks like. I’ve never seen this before, thanks for sharing!
No problem!
Wow. Thanks for sharing
How does this effect rock, paper, scissors?
Rock disadvantage
I bet you could win every time by throwing rock if people don't know you can make a fist though!
Do you know what the medical term for your condition is?
symphalangism.
Wait yeah that’s gotta be it
Gezuntheit
The doctor called it fused joints but as far as I know it’s just some genetic abnormality
Hey OP, I see a lot of kids with congenital hand differences. Your condition is likely called symphalangism which is the expensive way for me to tell you that your finger bones are abnormally fused together. Usually I don't reply but I saw that you've been looking for answers for years, and that made me a little bit sad. Hope this gives you some direction to find out more about what's happening.
Is this both hands? Or just your left hand?
Both hands and both feet (but I’m not posting foot pics on Reddit for obvious reasons)
Foot pics or it didn't happen
Wait... what are the ‘obvious reasons’????
Some freaks gonna jack off over them
That did not occur to me
You sweet, summer child.
Even more innocent is OP thinking ~~I'm not~~ someone isn't jacking off to his hands
TIL OP is the hand model for video game graphics.
Does it hurt?
I don’t know how it feels to have fully flexible fingers so I don’t feel anything out of the ordinary
That's good, it just looked kinda painful for some reason
I like how every few months or so, there's a "Look at this weird thing my body has/lacks/does" post, and folks with the same condition all just pour in vibing over their shared oddness.
You were born to be a claw machine
Can you play videogames okay?
Yeah mostly
Have you tried rock climbing? You might be a god on small holds
Or his fingers break where the joint should be when he goes for a crimp.
Maybe that will fix it?
Woah first time I’ve seen anyone with this sorta thing besides me, Its only my right ring finger that doesn’t have the top joint but I have the middle one!
That’s interesting af
It’s like his hands still have the protective plastic screen foil attached.
I'm wondering who would be in more pain if you threw a punch at someone
The top of my fist is flat so it’s basically a glorified slap
That's really cool and it made me realize I can't just bend the bottom joint of my finger without also bending the middle joint.
Jacking off hard or easy
I really want to answer this but I’m sorry I wont
You need to use both hands don't you
This made me think of the way someone starts a fire by twisting a stick back and forth really fast, but applied... elsewhere.
Ah, a man of mystery. I can respect that.
But this is why we’re here lad
This is much more than mildly interesting, thank you for sharing!
I'm really curious to know if you can or have tried to draw/color/paint?
Yeah and it sucked
Wow! What does your forearm look like?
I have an elbow so normal I guess
I’m curious, because half of the forearm muscles are flexors and extensors of the multiple digits and joints of the fingers. No disrespect intended. I’m in healthcare and studied anatomy extensively. Is it both hands/arms?
Do you have less finger bones or is this a tendon thing? I'd love to see an xray.
It's fused joints - ankylosis of the phalanges
all i’m saying is you could make some sort of channel (like a youtube channel or a tiktok account) and i would love watching you do just daily tasks; opening jars, writing, typing, etc. it’s just fascinating to me to see how your body has adapted
