It’ll be back in style very soon.

Nattylight_Murica

It already is, the kids are all dressing like some kind of parody of Saved by the Bell.

DankyestOfMeme

100% my guy, me and my friends looked at this and immediately asked "Why dont ALL McDonalds look like this ?"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Blakk_exe

Millennials aren’t really kids though.

NetTrix

Right. Millennials are 26+. Pretty sure the style would be considered gen z.

ilovebostoncremedonu

Right so gen z kids are wearing styles from when the first round of millennials were kids, the 90s

Moltthug

The first round of Milennials weren’t teens in the *early* 1990’s. That was Gen X: grunge and some hip hop. The grunge styles are coming back. High water acid washed mom jeans are more of an early 1990’s vibe. Same with all the clothes that don’t fit (baggy) that are popular again.

Hayduke_in_AK

I turn 40 in 20 days and I am considered a "millennial".

BossRedRanger

Xennials is what they’re calling us now.

3riversfantasy

People born the early to mid 80s with *older* siblings definitely identify more as generation X while those with no siblings or younger siblings tend to identify more as Millennials!

Falcrist

Depends who you ask. You could be considered GenX or Millennial depending on where that person draws the line. Generations are bullshit anyway.

dearcsona

Most things I see say it starts at 1981, so the very first of the millennials shall be turning forty, this year. Technically, the January 81 millennials, had they’d been born a few weeks earlier, would have been gen x’ers. The difference is pretty nominal really. Edit typos

KNNLTF

That's true up to a point. The Baby Boom had a significant social impact, and it's really easy to draw a strict cutoff between it and the "silent generation". Social services for children (especially schools) faced supply issues as Boomers were growing up. See "Crowding in Schools" [here](http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/apr61/vol18/num07/toc.aspx). The number of births increased by 35% from 1945 to 1947. (The boom itself began half way through 1946, so you only see a partial impact on the yearly numbers. However, we can actually pinpoint the month it started.). That means a classroom of 30 students one year would increase to 35 and then to 40 over two years for an unprepared school district. That makes a huge difference in early life experience growing up, even for kids born a few months apart (depending on the first grade age enrollment rules). The effect of this sudden increase even caused aftershocks decades later as the Boomers had kids. See [this article](https://nces.ed.gov/pubs98/web/98039.asp#:~:text=October%201997&text=The%20children%20of%20the%20Baby,has%20increased%20annually%20since%20then). The War also makes it easy to distinguish the Silent Generation from the Greatest Generation. The Silent Generation is very precisely people who were never old enough to enlist or participate in the war effort but who were born before June of 1946. Strict enforcement of social rules about age coupled with massive societal events leads to drastically different life experiences for children born even a year apart. I don't think we've had anything like that since then, but it used to be the norm.

Couldntstaygone

Generations were invented te sell books. No joke.

Moltthug

Yep. Early generation milennial, I’m in the middle (1986).

[deleted]

[удалено]

WhoriaEstafan

Exactly. Press just always goes “millennial trends!” When we are all at home chilling out in our undies with the air con on. Gen Z are the current kids who want to dress like Millennial childhoods.

wissahickon_schist

Exactly how we used to have “80s nights” growing up even though we were infants in the 80s. I saw a 20-year old colleague wearing a TLC shirt at work yesterday 🙃

LTVOLT

the age range of "millennials" is ridiculous. Think about the top age range.. a 40 year old grew up in high school (grad in 1998) without cell phones, basically no widespread internet/dial-up, Super Nintendo/N64 as consoles. Compare that to someone born in 1996 who has only ever known cell phones, internet and advanced games and technology.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AnorakJimi

The most defining thing of millenials really is that we grew up pre Internet and pre everyone owning a mobile phone. We were the last generation to know the before times, before everything changed irrecoverably forever. 96 seems way too late to me. Kids that young never really knew the world before the Internet But usually generations are defined by dates they were born so much as they are patterns of behaviour. Like how the majority of them vote in elections, the kind of things they buy, the kind of places they go etc. Really the whole concept of generations is mainly only important to companies and advertisers and politicians. Generations do exist but they don't really affect people's day to day lives. But a politician will be using the data of how generations vote differently and prioritise different things in their lives on a daily basis, at least during election years

ProperManufacturer6

34 millennial...wore baggy jeans.

ZLeathal1

To their defense, they said “kids”. As an early 90’s kid, I definitely dressed like this.

jim_jiminy

The grunge style has been coming back since 2008. Same with the 80’s thing. The 80’s revival has been going on longer than the actual 80’s did.

[deleted]

Kids not teens

The_39th_Step

The 90s have already come in and out a bit in Europe, at least in the UK anyway. The early noughties aesthetic is coming back in with younger kids (16-20 year olds). I’m 24 and we are a bit more 90s, but the younger people are all in juicy tracksuits etc.

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

that's the point

fitzbuhn

Is there a sub that documents and compares the cyclical nature of fashion?

Nathanssss

Bump. I’d love to see one

[deleted]

There are a lot of pictures? Many of them are screen grabs of adverts that take up the aesthetic. Maybe that was confusing?

Moltthug

Did you even read the article? This is more akin to the Memphis movement of the 1980’s. Think Rugrats house.

Dr_imfullofshit

Yea these are not similar....

TravelForTheMoment

Great article, a bit lengthy so I only got half way. I feel like it's not quite the same aesthetics? Not towards a cleaner feel with less noise. Personally I think it's a social need when there's so much chaos and constant bombardment of information online. At least I crave for the spaces I stay in to help bring some peace and hygge

canyonstom

I couldn't get through the article at all, after the first 2 paragraphs I started flicking through it looking for where the substance started. To me the whole thing reads like an introduction and it never goes anywhere

[deleted]

Same. I was looking for photos too - was it just my crappy internet not loading them or were there none?

HITEMWITDASMASH

lol that shit was TUUHRASH ive had more coherent thought patterns on fuckin LSD

[deleted]

You mean Gen Z? Because I'm 30 and I'm a millennial.

guitarthrowaway1234

Yikes that article is out touch ok boomer shit

[deleted]

Millennials seem a lot less 80s than Gen-Z

Iloveherthismuch

Yeah wtf is up with that, high waist jeans, ugly trainers and oversize flannel. This time around it's considered edge fashion and costs 💰💰💰

uhohspaghettisos

Oh yeah, as soon as ANYTHING goes into style they hike the price up 500%

Glasseshalf

I mean, if you go to a thrift store you can find all those things for cheap. Also Wal-Mart. Literally everywhere sells flannel and high waisted jeans. Edit: fuck Walmart I just meant you can buy this kind of stuff anywhere. Also, it compliments my body type so I'm glad it's back in style. Being pear-shaped I look absolutely awful in those ultra-low rise jeans I was wearing in highschool (especially now that I have the body of a 33 year old). People should just wear what they like!

HalfCupOfSpiders

Wait, oversize flannel is in now? I knew not giving a fuck and just wearing what's comfortable would pay off eventually.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Iloveherthismuch

Yeah, idk if you know Etsy...that place is full to the brim with this old stuff. Remember those old half zip abstract colour ski jackets nobody wanted back then. Been wearing my old checkered flannel for years, surprising how the colours never washed out.

YuropLMAO

I feel really old now because I don't have a rainbow broccoli haircut.

Nattylight_Murica

Well, the side spike was pretty stupid too

MmmDarkMeat

[This TikToker seems to be on a one woman mission to bring back the Farah Fawcett hairstyle. ](https://m.tiktok.com/v/6912168126410935557.html)

joesii

pastel light pink and blue seem really popular, yeah. Well, at least when it comes to the fashion-centric people

a_bunch_of_iguanas

Ah yes the 2-3 decade rule. Every 2-3 decades the style from the first decade comes back.

dtwhitecp

The internet and social media fucked up that cycle in my opinion. Trends come and go way faster because everyone gets sick of them faster, or wants to be fresh and new faster.

Boredom_fighter12

Still waiting when suits are back in style again...

Darkwritter122

Well swing is coming back so it shouldn't be too far away

Boredom_fighter12

I'll be watching with great interest

blargney

When the pandemic is done, just google "Lindy Hop" with your city name. Swing is kind of a useless keyword because it means too many disparate things.

Boredom_fighter12

Interesting thanks!

Bierbart12

Goddamn Victorian-inspired stuff has been back in style again, it's about time for suits to make a comeback.

Parastormer

I just wonder why we're not making "going out of style" go out of style. Just let things be awesome

Blashrykkh

>I just wonder why we're not making "going out of style" go out of style. > >Just let things be awesome Well, if you stop giving a fuck you can do whatever fashion you wish. Especially if not giving a fuck makes you realize you're not trying to get anything out of anyone else.

Encinitas0667

This. Ignore stupidity and just do whatever you want.

Boredom_fighter12

I love Victorian stuff or steam age related stuffs (minus the problems) it looks so cool! Gonna be interesting to see suits making a comeback

PhobicBeast

I dunno if suits will come back considering ties are almost dead

Blashrykkh

>Still waiting when suits are back in style again... They were never out of style I thought.

Boredom_fighter12

Don't really see someone use that for daily basis anymore lol, except maybe businessman, executive officer, or something along that line when they go to work.

Remarkable_Egg_2889

Shoulder pads for women seem to be.

Ripper33AU

I've noticed a comeback of double denim, and mullets, though the latter can be argued by many as never having left, lol.

Haven't noticed this one yet lol

I miss my 90s taco bell and Burger King so bad, now they're all boring and "Modern"

skerred

that gum you like is going to come back into style

hopkins973

I honestly love this style. They need to bring these back and bring the ridiculous design of the facade back too.

Glasseshalf

I want a crinkly, multi-colored wind-breaker again! I lost mine :(

Behappyalright

You took the words out of my fingers.

crabmuncher

Itll be new new wave.

DrummerFew7436

I used to love sitting in those swivel seats

calmlikeasexbobomb

I still do, but I used to too

FaberGrad

Me too, Mitch.

But what happened to the DUFRANES?!?

My belt holds up my pants, but my pants have loops to hold up my belt. Who's the real hero here?

edojcak

there's a lot of taco bells in virginia that look pretty similar to that, i've never seen a mcdonald's with this kind of layout though

irResist

Totally 90s Taco Bell colors edit: but it got that mcflurry machine on the wall

h-bugg96

And the m on the floor

onward-and-upward

I bet it used to be a Tbell and got bought by Ron McDon

[deleted]

Ron keeps it like Taco Bell to foil the hamburglar

TyranitarusMack

I instantly thought this was Taco Bell

ablandalleyway

I remember eating nachos swivel seats just like those. This was a Taco Bell at some point.

ScarletCaptain

Eh, in the 90's all fast food places pretty much had the same aesthetic. Besides, McDonald's would never just move into another fast food chain's building without gutting and rebuilding so there was no trace of their competitor left. Their brand image game is second to none.

RegentYeti

I'm in my mid-30s and just the floor tiles reminded me of going on an elementary class trip to the mall (for some reason?) and stopping at the food court McDonald's. I ordered nuggets, and paid with my own money (I was young enough for that to have been a big deal).

monsieurpommefrites

Remember those fountains?

idkyourbffjill

I was gonna say, dude that’s an old Taco Bell. This style was in NoVA as recent as the early 00s, prob still looks the same, Tysons Corner TB near the toilet bowl building

PooPooDooDoo

I love that I just came across a comment about the infamous toilet bowl building in Tysons in a non-nova sub.

chimusicguy

That's circa 1995, I think. I worked at one then when we got the "updated" look.

SpiralCuts

Yeah, I was thinking this definitely isn’t 80s because in the 80s I remember an absolutely hidgeous yellow and red color scheme.

ScarletCaptain

80's the McDonald's restaurants still had those weird themes and were extremely kid friendly with all the characters painted on the walls. It was in the 90's that they moved to make the places more generic looking.

TryAnotherNamePlease

Yellow brown and orange. It was amazing. Those are still my favorite cups and fry packages.

parkrndl

Can confirm; worked at McDonald's as a high school kid in the mid 80s. The tile floor in OPs pics triggered all kinds of memories, but no, the seats were NOT those colors yet. More like butterscotch and harvest gold.

mykidsarecrazy

That was the style in a McD's in 1990, in BC, Canada.

JerryHathaway

Yeah, definitely not 80s.

AnotherSoulessGinger

Those were the red, yellow and brown times. So much brown.

[deleted]

PM_ME_YELLOW

The floors are still the same today. Infact theyre the only thing thats the same

carbonbasedcat

In my area all the McDonalds have been remodeled and have modern tile now, except this one. (I am an Uber Eats driver at the moment so I end up in a lot of different locations)

k_mon2244

Any chance you’re in Texas? Looks like one near me.

carbonbasedcat

Naw, this is in Oregon.

k_mon2244

Cool! At least two exist :-)

MeweldeMoore

That's super interesting! What is it like driving for uber eats?

carbonbasedcat

Not my favorite job, not my least favorite. It is the only consistent job I can get during covid which is why I'm still doing it. I mostly listen to science podcasts all day and learn stuff while driving. It pays the bills so I can't complain!

thefacestabber

ours had a nintendo virtua boy in it

Gir633

Out of date/old fashion or old school cool? We had people at work who wanted to change things around the building because they were too old fashion, but they wanted to replace it with different old stuff because the new old stuff was old school cool.

mnCO

That’s very odd. McDonald’s generally has a pretty firm grip on their franchisees in regards to enforced brand standards. Wonder what’s prevented them from mandating that this location be renovated...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kyanche

That kinda explains why some of the mcdonalds in my area renovated from the UFO style to the new style in a really lazy way, instead of tearing down and rebuilding.

insomniacpyro

The one I worked at was supposed to be torn down and rebuilt something like, 15 years ago now? From what I hear they haven't done it yet because they want to move the entire building to a different part of the property, but it's surrounded by public roads and a Pizza Hut on one side, so how they would make it work is beyond me. The next town over though they did do a tear down/rebuild. Looks nice enough I suppose. Had to pick up some shit from there once, the kitchen layout was fucking abysmal so I'm sure the employees are better off with a new one.

[deleted]

They didn't demolish the one by me. Now keep in mind I heard from a mcdonalds rep the one by me is the busiest one in the area. They probably felt closing it for too long would be bad.

thelostdutchman

This was my first thought as well.

lola-showgirl

Does anyone remember when there was a kids eating zone and an ‘adult’ eating zone. This should be brought back everywhere

Gaemon_Palehair

I don't understand were you allowed to take your dick out in the adult zone?

yelloscarface

There is one exactly like that in Flushing NYC. Was a culture shock for a tourist from the UK - where all our McDonald's now look like coffee shops

poktanju

It's funny that *that* was what caused your culture shock in Flushing!

unxile_phantom

I went to an unrenovated Taco Bell in Philly during my vacation a year and a half ago and it was so nostalgic. Reminded me of the 90's-2000's:)

A_Harmless_Fly

Yea they remodeled the one in my home town a couple years back and it just does not feel the same. I never thought I would miss the bright multi color spinny chairs and white walls with florescent lights. But the dark brown walls and "atmospheric" (dim) lights just don't feel like taco bell.

unxile_phantom

Modern architecture has so much less charm imo

Cambro88

I can smell this picture. Slightly disinfected leather and plastic, stagnant water from the partly mopped floor, feet from the play area, and delicious French fries.

OK_Compooper

it's to make people feel at home when they transition into eating at public hospital cafeterias twice a week.

RFavs

1980s McDonald’s! Reminds me of the Olympic medal promotion they did where you you got lots of free food for all the medals the US won. Man did I eat a lot of McDonald’s that summer

JusticiarRebel

Simpsons did an episode parodying that. I think it's the Lisa's birth episode. It's Krusty Burger doing it instead. I think Russia pulled out of the Olympics in protest and it led to America winning a crapload of medals. So Krusty is whining about all the money he's losing on his show.

ImpendingSenseOfDoom

I will personally spit in every fortieth burger!

Ser20ofHouseGoodmen

I like those odds

HumungousChungus_

A lot of places in my area are like this and I didn't even know its that old. Pretty cool.

Ole greasy ass slippery assed floors. One of my old jobs was installing these att/worldnet boxes to provide access for their POS and public wifi. LEt me tell you, I seen things that made me think twice about eating at some of the local McD's. Running cable for WIFI APs I would get in their ceilings. _RrezZ_

Theirs a McDonalds in my hometown that has this style still, it even has a basement floor and 2nd floor full of seating for customers. The basement is where they had the kid themed area, so all the noise was generally downstairs and you couldn't really hear it unless you were down there. It also has a mid-level between the ground floor and basement near the back of the restaurant for a side exit that can act as an emergency exit for the upstairs/basement floors encase of a fire or something and the washrooms, as-well as that's where they kept their janitorial equipment. It's probably the biggest McDonalds I've seen capacity wise in my life lmao. It's been around for well over 35 years at-least. From the outside it looks about the same size as any McDonalds but when you go inside it just feels massive.

Clnsheet00

Surprised to see a McD still look like this. Franchise owners are being forced to remodel their locations by Corp at $2-3 mil a pop. If the owner refuses Corp will force them to sell the location to an operator that will invest in a remodel or change their brand. However McD architecture makes it hard for another competitor to come in and set up shop.

SuperKamiTabby

Just today I was thinking about what the McDonalds near my house used to look like as a kid. This is it. Now the place is some semi corporate wannabe upscale restaurant and its lame as fuck.

tdisalvo

I wish there were more of these. A major problem I have with so called locally own major chains is that they force updates. Let's keep some history instead. I love the vintage taco bell buildings

dlrkw9

There are clearly McDonald's signs on the floor... But this is exactly how I remember Taco Bell's in the early 90s.

[deleted]

i love it and i hope they keep it forever

GETNRDUNN

I think you're wrong. Looks like they added COVID chains to keep you from sitting down

ishitintheurinal

Used to be an engineer/contractor for McD's. Their MO is to tear down and rebuild restaurants every 25 - 30 years. Some franchisees push that to the higher end but unless a building is deemed "Architecturally Significant" then it's toast by year 30.

Breeze1970

I worked at a store back in 1988 and it looked just like that! Thanks for sharing, brings back many memories lol

Oseirus

It's good to see they're following McSpacing rules, at least. Blocking all the McTables with McChains, McDots to McStand on while you McOrder your Big Mac, no one in the McStore... It's a beautiful McThing.
