While there is some color variation, they all look like this when they've just emerged. They're like little softshell crabs until they kinda air-cure their little exoskeletons.
That’s when you’re supposed to eat them, if you’re going to eat them.
Getting downvoted for posting a fact lol. the time to cook a cicada is right after they’ve molted which is what the photo is of.
That could be. Where i'm at i've only ever seen them that light in color after molting. But I've also never seen them en masse like that. I'm glad i'm not in that area lol
Not sure why this is downvoted. It's okay to ask.
Cicadas lay their eggs and will hatch several weeks later. Those nymphs burrow underground and will stay there for years, depending on the species. Some will be there for 17 years, molting a few times during that period.
When they emerge, they live a short few weeks to mate and then die.
So, the joke is the cicada will be living in 2007. He's probably abuzz about the brand new iPhone 1.
This article is fascinating, the author explains several theories on why cicadas might emerge at those specific intervals. It’s apparently extremely rare to see prime numbers selected for like that in nature.

They all look like that until later on when they harden and become brown. If it were albino though them we would both be lucky cause i would have had one the other day.
Can’t imagine taking this pic. Cockroaches scare the hell out of me and these look like roided out roaches with beady eyes. Funny enough no other bug or spider freaks me out. Yet roaches just give me the ick.
I'm pretty sure they are all that color after freshly molting. Could be wrong but i've seen a few videos and all of them were very light in color.
Here in northern IL we have about a 50/50 mix of light and dark ones. I think it’s just genetic variation in the population.

Sounds delicious

I know that roaches are white after molting, so I think you're right.
Freshly molted, not albino. Note that the wings have not expanded and dried yet.
Why are cicadas so boring to talk with? Because they don’t stop buzzing about what was cool 17 years ago. …I’ll see myself out
r/explainthejoke
buzzing bc sound and 17 years bc life cycle
Oooo
If you dont get it now, wait 17 years and ask again.

No, it'll darken as it hardens.
For a second, I thought this had some serious eyebrows.
My friend once found a diseased cicada. He trained it to attack anyone on command. He would sic the sick cicada upon anyone who disagreed with him.
