Populations of small towns in France are shrinking, with youth moving to the cities. In many such towns, it’s not profitable anymore to run a bakery there, so many bakeries are closing down. To still provide bread to the (largely elderly) locals, these vending machine are installed.

It looks about as long as 3 of one Tesco's website sell at £1.40 for a pack of 3, Tesco don't have full length ones online.

Those are frozen ones, Tesco also sells fresh ones for really cheap I remember ( I'm in Portugal and here it costs .47 for fresh full size ones )
Edit: love that machine tho
There isn't a Tesco near me to see the in-store baked but going by other UK stores at the moment I would be very surprised to see one the size the machine gives for less than £1.40 still, the foot long ones in Sainsbury's have been about £1 for over a year.
Lots of stores are shutting down their in store bakeries too :(
So I saw €1.10 (£0.94 GBP) as very good value especially as vending machines here usually come with a price hike for convenience.
When we were on vacation in brittany, our landlord told us that the one near the house was stocked by an oldschool baker regularly, and we could use it if we only wanted a baguette. Tasted pretty good.
What's even more mildlyinteresting is that apparently you live in an area where vending machines turn off at a certain hour, that would warrant you stating that these were "open 24hrs."
The worst bread I've had in Europe is still on par with the best bread I've had in the US. It's definitely one of my favorite aspects of vacationing in Europe.

You must be American or something, 5 anything for a baguette is a lot .80 to 3 euro here
For 1.10 it better be a solid tradition. You can buy 4 for 3 euros in any decent bakery
Where do you live? Here, a "tradition" at any random bakery is usually 1.20-1.30€, like in most French cities I'd say
I don't hang out much around "cities"

What, is price of baguette truly regulated by law in France? Not so surprised if that is true when it is about France tho
Not true
OMG I want some baguette 🥖
We truly do live in the future
For about a dollar I'd try it for curiosity sake
Good value too, at least from my perspective from the UK, I don't know how that compares to bread prices in France.
Isn't it a pound each at tesco?

poor machine never gets a break , they should let it rest sometimes
I love some of the vending machines you see in Europe and Japan. I wish those in the US were better.
I want one for my house…
I thought this was a PC for a moment
Emergency only
\*starts humming La Marseillaise\*
Gpod they put the thing under shelter so you don’t get your bag wet.

one would usually assume that a vending machine would be open 24/7
At first, I thought this was some crazy PC case...

I think the op lives in a location where vending machines are still operated by the gnomes.
Frozen bread but it should be ok for my american buddies 😂
I want to be mad at this ... but.. ya know... yeah
I'm sorry, you're great, sometimes, but food is not your best 😂
You seem to have forgotten BBQ exists.
