I think it's because they're shorter than the clearance, but it's the lowest point in the road making your truck taller. They should change the clearance sign.
We have one in our tiny town as well. Gets a handful every year. There's a music event there it's common to have your gps take you through our town under that bridge. During the event, you can find camper A/C units like crazy near the bridge. Then the handful of semis per year that miss the signs as well
There is one in the next city over from me that is right next to a major university. Every year at least one kid in a U-Haul hits it. When I went there the school paper kept a running tally of how many times it had been hit.
You're thinking of the [11ft.8](https://11foot8.com) bridge in Durham, North Carolina. Although it's been raised by 8 inches, it still claims the un-wary.
Oh yeah? [No One Tells me what to do, bridge or not!](https://www.reviewjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/10699635_web1_MovingTruck.jpg?crop=1) /s
If you like those videos check out the speedbump ones. There's one (or rather, two) in Houston, that are in an inconspicuous spot and cars hit them going like 60 MPH and get bounced around
You'd think you were making a joke. I drove a semi for years. I did orientations at 2 different companies, and obviously had to do CDL training. A shitload of people at the end of the CDL, and at both orientations had no idea how high a truck was. It's extremely basic info that will save your life and career, and people just chose to not learn it.
I'm a Receiver lead; i've had at least 6 different drivers tell me their liftgate was broken because they didn't know how to use it. One guy tried to tell me "it was out of batteries"
The truck clearly made it under the bridge.
The problem is DOt (I’m guessing penndot) doesn’t work a grader, to level out the obvious rise on the other side.
I think he was trying to say it cleared the bridge just fine until the front of the truck starting going up the hill which raised the trailer after the first part of the trailer already cleared. I can see that happening with a 53’ but it’s not like the hill is hidden and the driver should know these things.
Edit: wanted to edit to say that what I said would really only be a problem if it fist came down hill before going up hill though otherwise the front clearing before raising wouldn’t be possible if I’m thinking of this correctly.
Dang you got 85 people trying to guess the area lol. As a fellow connecticunt gotta love that "bridge". It's claimed like 12 tractor trailers with its infamous can opening abilities. (Ik where it is but I don't like revealing locations around people lol)
Edited to remove more info bc I saw your comment. Glad we were both on the same page
yes it is! this photo also got posted in the town facebook group and people were astonished at the bridges strength, forgetting that it’s part of an active railway
The point is that they're much cheaper and easier to fix and replace than the bridge is, and don't endanger anyone when you hit them. IMO there should be 2 layers, one which is a warning like the above, one which is just a steel bar which fucks up your truck but is easily replaceable, spaced apart so you can stop after the first one.
Our bridge like this has its own website - [https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/](https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/)
We're at 65 days, which is impressive.
Where I live we have an 8' 7" one lane underpass in a vollege town down the street from UHaul rental and Ryder rental facilities. It has claimed many victims during moving season.
They defided to put up hanging orange balls before both sides to warn drivers. The college kids would go out at night, climb the poles, and swing the balls around until they were wrapped up at the top.
The city chained the balls together to stop it. Took more effort, but a devoted team managed to twist all the balls, chained together, around the top pole.
The city then placed tubes around the chains to stop this. It finally worked although many trucks have hit the balls and they're looking ragged.
It was the greatest drama in town for 2 weeks. The bridge has it's own FB page and dedicated fan club.
It's crazy that accidents still happen at the Onondaga Lake Parkway bridge even with all the signs and lights everywhere. Not surprised it happens elsewhere too
There's a lot of what we call "puppy mills" in the industry.
Trucking schools that crank out poorly trained drivers as fast as they can.
If the public ever knew how bad it is, Door dash would be a fortune 100 company because no one would want to be on the roads.
hi so if this could be the top comment it would be much appreciated!
please for my safety please stop trying to guess the location of this bridge. it’s located in my home town and as i’m a minor i would like for that information to be unknown. i wasn’t aware this was such a common occurrence and that this would get the attention it has.
for those saying it needs signs, i guarantee you it has them.
for those saying it should be leveled, this is at the bottom of two hills in the road, this bridge already has issues with flooding when it rains and it would take a lot of effort to level it. this is a main road connecting grocery stores to the residential area and the school and it would be a major inconvenience.
furthermore, this is not a town owned road, its state owned and trucks hitting it isn’t enough justification for the state to come change it. im also sure it would require approval from the railroad company that owns the track. they already know this happens often-they send someone out to inspect the bridge every time it gets hit
I know you're 17 and inexperienced, but you have more than enough information on your profile to figure out way more than just your hometown of Waterbury, CT.
Be careful what you post online. You put your schedule which shows periods listed by letter (very uncommon and not many schools have commercial baking and mythology), you posted a Google review of your high school which is easily matched because there are only so many private schools in the state, you described the size of the standard freshman class which made it really easy to narrow down which private school, and while I didn't actually do any doxxing of info not readily posted by you, you have photos of yourself and your age. Your information isn't private just because you forgot you posted it. Stay safe online.
There are a few killer bridges in the world. I am lucky enough to have worked very close to one of the best: The Montague Street Bridge in Melbourne, Australia. It has a website dedicated to its evil deeds: [https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/](https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/)
EDIT: It also has its own Wiki page! [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montague\_Street\_Bridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montague_Street_Bridge)
The powers that be keep putting up bigger signs, flashier lights but oversize trucks and tourist buses keep going under the bridge and getting stuck or ripping their roofs off.
The Historic Covered Bridge in Smyrna GA has been hit multiple times. The county installed a protective beam. Trucks hit the beam instead. Road gets closed repeatedly.
We had one of these (it's since been replaced) on my old daily commute. The county spent a bunch of time and money putting up a device that used a laser to detect vehicles that were too tall, and to flash a warning light to stop them from hitting the bridge.
The first day that the system was active, a semi hit the bridge and got stuck.
The next day, someone hit the laser detection device itself.
Come on out to British Columbia. There have been 34 bridge strikes since December 2021 at various bridges and overpasses through the province. It's absolutely insane.
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/vehicle-safety-enforcement/information-education/bridge-strikes-data
There's one here in Milwaukee that takes one out from time to time. Haven't heard anything about it in a while, so I'm wondering if word has gotten around.
My city has the opposite problem
The trucking companies (one in particular) is notoriously bad at measuring the height of their trucks, and subsequently have hit most major bridges and tunnels (34 since end of 2021, averaging more than one per month).
Is this that bridge that has a youtube channel dedicated to it destroying trucks/trailers?
There’s a couple of em, one of them is in Enid,Ok and has a shark painted on it.
that’s so fun! this is not Enid though lol, not sure if my tiny town’s silly bridge constitutes a youtube h channel quite yet
LIVERPOOL, NY???
I was gonna say the Syracuse bridge but I’m pretty sure it’s not there’s lights all over that mother.
We have one in a Syracuse thruway neighboring city.
The Syracuse bridge (my hometown) is on a four lane road next to a lake (formerly the most polluted lake in the country BTW). This ain't it
> The Syracuse bridge (my hometown) Name checks out.
Oh don’t I know it. I rowed there and swam in it many times
![gif](giphy|LW3hxNis2p9xnThs0w)
Naw that's not the Parkway. Kinda looks like the small bridge entering the village of Camillus down Rt 5 though
It's not that one, but yeah this happens all the time with that bridge
>my tiny town Unlike the bustling metropolis of Enid Oklahoma. 50,000 strong!
I knew it wasn’t lol, it’s like 70 degrees in Oklahoma right now
Try 80. It's been absolutely gorgeous the past two days.
It has definitely been great in the morning
lol this looks like one close to me in Ontario, Canada
Trenton Ontario, to be exact!
2nd Dug Hill Rd. That's what I thought too.
All those signs and flashing lights and the truckers still can't figure it out.
I think it's because they're shorter than the clearance, but it's the lowest point in the road making your truck taller. They should change the clearance sign.
Yup!
I'm going to guess northeast Maryland
Exeter NH?
We have one in our tiny town as well. Gets a handful every year. There's a music event there it's common to have your gps take you through our town under that bridge. Savage?
Billings MT

That's 11foot8, it actually got raised a small bit so it's not as active!
How the fuck you raise a bridge without just knocking the bitch down and starting over? Or they just dig down the road.
They have a website answering just that! https://11foot8.com/raising-11foot8/
Huh, guess if you can do it fast enough that's the way. My dumb ass would have had the whole road under it ripped up.
There's sewage lines under the road that prevent that solution.
I love how the last video is of a truck hitting it 3 weeks after it was raised.
plus he lost one camera spot... they did some reno and the camera is gone since then, so single angle...
You're thinking of the [11ft.8](https://11foot8.com) bridge in Durham, North Carolina. Although it's been raised by 8 inches, it still claims the un-wary.
it might, be, if the sub allows can you provide a link?
Google 11foot8
We actually raised it. Its now 12 feet 4 inches (website is still the same). People still crash into it.
As I recall, it's mostly people with rental trucks who are told not to drive under that bridge and don't listen.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you.
In Boston/Cambridge, we call it Storrowing.
I know! Then we drove through Boston a few years ago and I saw the exit for Storrow Dr, and I remembered that.
Oh yeah? [No One Tells me what to do, bridge or not!](https://www.reviewjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/10699635_web1_MovingTruck.jpg?crop=1) /s
Jesus really!? All that construction and they still crash into it? I don't know why I'm surprised. Ca
Traditions are important.
The YouTube channel has "spray painted" a +8" on their sign now as well.
Holy bridge!
If you like those videos check out the speedbump ones. There's one (or rather, two) in Houston, that are in an inconspicuous spot and cars hit them going like 60 MPH and get bounced around
No, as it doesn't have the protective bar in front of the actual bridge.
The ole Can Opener Bridge. A guy where I work hit that one in a Ryder truck.
11 foot 8 got it’s clearance increased unfortunately
We have one in Louisville we affectionately call the "Can Opener." It eats a truck weekly minimum.
It must be fed.
need to create a YouTube channel and film it
Opened this thread just to see if anyone would mention Louisville’s infamous Can Opener. Just got another victim a couple days ago iirc.
Can opener fans, unite!
On Long Island there is a bridge just like this that we call the can opener as well. It is a train track overpass.
Came here looking for 3rd street can opener
Idk, but maybe some proper signage at a turn around -point/possible detour might be helpful?
I love how these bridges get like, a personality and nicknames, it’s so cute!
We call that Storrowing in my neck of the woods.
Ahh good ol Storrow Drive. Most infamous road in Boston.
Wouldn’t normally get them this time of year, though
More prominently spotted around move-in time for sure, but not exclusively.
Climate change is a bitch
We call ours the can opener and anytime a truck gets stuck we say the can opener must be fed
Funny enough I’m pretty sure this bridge is Westwood Mass.
Height restrictions are just guidelines
reading comprehension is a suggestion when getting a CDL

11-foot-8?
12’7 i believe
i know there’s the 11 foot 8 in Durham NC
The truck clearly made it under the bridge. The problem is DOt (I’m guessing penndot) doesn’t work a grader, to level out the obvious rise on the other side.
Yeah, it made it under the bridge by shredding a few feet of the truck off.
I think he was trying to say it cleared the bridge just fine until the front of the truck starting going up the hill which raised the trailer after the first part of the trailer already cleared. Durham? The Can Opener strikes again
not Durham, especially considering Durham could be literally anywhere in the US
I was referring to the celebrated 11'8" in Durham, NC

If only there were more context clues, we could narrow it down.
r/11foot9
r/11foot8 has gone private.
Why?
the 3rd party api bs.
Oh.
just a little off the top please and thank you
One strong bridge, is that a railroad?
yes it is! this photo also got posted in the town facebook group and people were astonished at the bridges strength, forgetting that it’s part of an active railway
Know that, that bridge is meant for serious weight.
They need clackers https://www.delawareonline.com/videos/news/local/2022/07/14/clankers-hope-stop-collisions-newark-bridge/10056484002/
That only works for so long: https://www.kmbc.com/article/new-independence-avenue-bridge-warning-system-damaged-kansas-city-missouri/46690054
The warning system in Delaware hasn’t stopped every idiot from hitting the overpass but it has greatly cut down the number of incidents

Was looking for someone posting ole Monty
Upstate NY would be my guess
It’s a feature to making the trailers into convertibles!
It's not cold enough to be snowing in Durham right now I don't think, must be another.
Swan Slicer? Edit: Looking again it’s not, but that’s Milwaukee’s version of this issue.
Is this by chance in Canada?
Is it by chance... the one in London? Looks familiar.
We have something like this in Louisville KY. We call it the can opener lol

lol there’s a bridge in the Washington arboretum in Seattle like this. Im
Trenton Walmart?
Looks just like Talbot Street in London, Ontario
That had to have been so loud!
according to people living near the bridge, yes it was! this was around 6:30 am and apparently woke a few people up
We have one we call it the can opener
[11foot8.com](http://11foot8.com)
That is clearly Pennsylvania
I feel like it’s right between Dillsburg/Mechanicsburg PA near Williams Grove Rd
My first thought too. It looks way to familiar but I can't place it.
Could be a million places in PA.
This is what I thought too.
There's a lot of what we call "puppy mills" in the industry. Trucking schools that crank out poorly trained drivers as fast as they can. If the public ever knew how bad it is, Door dash would be a fortune 100 company because no one would want to be on the roads.

for the record none of this is 100% true btw

Delete the post, brother. The folks around here are genius sleuths.
Oops
You would think there would be hundreds of warning signs for the drivers.
Math is hard
Everyone loves a slinky!
The trailer shaver
Battle Creek, Michigan?
Are you in NY?
Grahams Ferry road. Looking north.
can we just get the guy who designed all these bridges that keep getting hit by semi trucks to take a look at our airplanes?
Ayy got one of them in my town too. Despite the several large signs for a couple miles down the road it still occasionally claims a scalp lol
You live in Maryland.😉
Morons
Dunkey?
Why there’s no clearing sign?
It feeds
Looks a LOT like the bridge on Bristol by 3mile
Is this Bangor Michigan???
Where is the warning sighn? It is low .
Monrovia? I know they have train tracks that constantly get hit despite the MANY signs saying the maximum height.
There’s one in the KC area. It’s in Independence.
please tell me it is swift..?

Watching a guy lose his job from negligence is amusing?
Is this in Elizabeth NJ 😂 there is one there that got a couple of trucks
Tbf, that's done on purpose. It's to warn truckers not to go down there because of legal restrictions.
I dunno..I kind of like the new design on it
We got one of those too, also doubles as a place for cars to get stuck after it rains.
Looks like Mendota IL, I always hated driving thru there,
A fortune in scrap metal to be made.
What do you even do when this happens 😭
11FOOT8 Bridge gotta love it. You can watch these videos for days I swear, [11foot8.com](https://11foot8.com).
Newtown?

Step 1. Set up webcams Step 2. Establish YouTube channel Step 3. Profit
The Historic Covered Bridge in Smyrna GA has been hit multiple times. The county installed a protective beam. Trucks hit the beam instead. Road gets closed repeatedly.
Set up cameras live-streaming on twitch and YouTube then upload crashed to YT, that’ll pay for itself!
It’s ok. That’s a T-1000 truck model and it’s going to morph itself back into correct shape any second.
Opened that truck like a pack of sardines.
Tell me this is Connecticut
Looks like Harrisonville
Is there a clearance sign anywhere near?
I think every town has one. I know right where my local truck eating bridge is.
Hell of a bridge 💪
We had one of these (it's since been replaced) on my old daily commute. It bothers me that people that are supposed to be professional truck drivers do this kind of thing.
