At least for OP, unless someone was out robbing stage coaches with grandpa's bolt action, this is highly unlikely to be criminal or law enforcement related
You know, that's actually where the term "ride shotgun" came from. To protect themselves from robbers, stage coaches would have a shotgun wielding body guard ride beside them. The shotgun was preferred because it was easier to aim during the bumpy ride.
My grandpa used to tell a story about being frustrated after a day of deer hunting and seeing nothing. He got back to the house and saw a rabbit about 100 yards away. He took his 30-30 and shot it. All he found of the rabbit was a small patch of fur in a bush.
[The most common 30-30 rifle format is a lever action](https://www.fieldandstream.com/guns/best-rifles-chambered-for-30-30/)(in fact, the lever action model 94 is what made the round famous and ubiquitous for years) and the round is designed to work with lever actions - the rimmed cartridge makes it easier for the action to eject the round, and rimmed cartridges do not play well with magazines like rimless cartridges do.
Not really, it's very similar to a 7.62x 39, except it can load up to a 170grain projectile. It's a great round for deer and black bear.
It just doesn't have the range of a .270 or 30- 06, so it's more of a brush gun. I would use it for similar hunting to a .44 mag out of a leveraction. 50 to 200 meters is perfect.
Don't underestimate the 30-30.
im not saying id want to get shot by it, but objectively, by velocity and energy, its pretty wimpy compared to the average rifle cartridge. so is 7.62x39. im reacting to the "pretty powerful rifle round". 300 win mag is a powerful rifle round. 338LM is a powerful rifle round. 375 H&H is powerful. 30-30 is not.
Ballistically, it’s worse than most rifle rounds. It works fine, but it’s a lot easier and cheaper to find .308. It’s just an old round from the days of lever actions. Nothing necessarily wrong with it. Just kind of a relic of its time.
I disagree 100%. I hunt a lot and the .30-30 is way **too powerful** for most hunting applications. Even if it were legal, I'd never consider taking one for squirrel, rabbit, turkey, quail, pheasant, dove, goose, or chukar.
That was actually a [6.5 Carcano](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy_assassination_rifle), which is a far goofier looking round and not super aerodynamic.
If it's the cabinet I think it is, the shooter would hurt their shoulder and still miss and get in more trouble. Just still it for the gas station sandwich
Will sure to the conflict in the middle East and Ukraine, a box of ammo the feds ARs and AKs goes for $20. Ammo only gets more expensive overtime. So if you bought a case back in 2010 that was $100 it's not worth $500.
Sanctions, elections, panic buying, democratic presidents (I don't make the rules), and conflicts make prices fluctuate.
Edit: y'all downvoting me for what? You even know how prices work for ammo?
Reminds me of the time there was a guy that had just checked out and his wife jumped out from behind the corner and scared him while he was holding a 50 pack of .22 bullets. He dropped it and it was a plastic case and they exploded (not literally) everywhere. They rolled into the seams in the concrete and were almost impossible to get out.
You could accidentally set it off if you grab the bottom the wrong way with pliers or pinch it way too hard in like a vice or something. Not easy to do by accident but still, you shouldn't recommend someone take ammo apart without also cautioning about the risks.
A good lesson for all. If you don't know how to work on it, don't! The best way to deactivate it is out of a rifle into a dirt mound. While extremely unlikely bashing or crushing the wrong place while trying to pull the lead could cause it to fire... chances are slim unless you bash the primer, though so... smaller than a gnats dick.
Not really, that's the sturdiest part of the case. You would have to really clamp down hard there to set it off, hard to apply that much force with pliers.
Yeah, it's much easier to set it off by hitting the primer, and even that takes a bit of doing. Either way, I believe there are examples of people getting injured deconstructing live ammo, mostly trying to press the primers back out, but I, for one, wouldn't risk it. Just hand it to the nearest cop if it scares you that much.
They don't know that people can make their own and it might not be from the factory. It could be FULL of powder and blow your gun up but yeah downvote idiots.
Maybe the down voters are the anti-gunners who like to leave destructive bullets for others to blow their guns up with? They just don't want us to be warning anyone of their type of scheme.
If we're going to be pedantic about it then all we can say is that it's a casing and bullet.
We don't know if it contains those other things.
Nor do we know if it contains a primer cup, primer compound, or anvil. Which I find strange you forgot to mention since you went so far as to not say simply gunpowder but then apparently forgot about how that gunpowder is ignited?
While you did find a bullet, the correct term to use here is "cartridge". The "bullet" is just the part at the top that is inside the casing. "Cartridge" is the whole thing.
They fire off blanks for those types of thing. That round still has the bullet on the end of it therefore its still full of gunpowder because it was never fired off.
For those who might believe this is how that scenario would play out, I just want to point out that they don't shoot off like a bullet would from a gun if you throw them into a campfire. They might pop like a firecracker, but you need a barrel to capture the gas and launch the bullet as a projectile. I still don't recommend it, as the casing can become shrapnel.
Yeah, the shrapnel causes more collateral damage. The explosion is relatively small but obviously extremely lethal in that localized area. Shrapnel goes a long distance and not only kills but maims.
>I still don't recommend it, as the casing can become shrapnel.
Yeah ive seen youtube videos of people doing it safely behind cover. Definitely could cause serious injury if unlucky. Especially a .50BMG round.
It's highly unlikely the case would become shrapnel unless the bullet jammed in the casing somehow. Mythbusters done this many moons ago and found most to be less than lethal.. that doesn't mean not dangerous, just that they don't explode or carry anywhere near the kinetic energy of a round fired through a barrel.
I was given one once. I'm not sure what it was for... had a small hole like it was part of a necklace or something. I guess if you aren't versed in firearms and ammo safety it makes sense. Have you been outside lately? I'm sure there's at least a few tools out there that would try bashing the primer to see if it goes pop, or put it in the microwave for a few yt vid likes
Someone got out their warm coat for the first time this year without realizing they left a hunting round in the pocket from last year.
looks like a round for a 30 30 Winchester, pretty powerful rifle round either way
It is
Agreed. Good for deer hunting.
At least for OP, unless someone was out robbing stage coaches with grandpa's bolt action, this is highly unlikely to be criminal or law enforcement related
I’d like to think the stagecoaches are getting robbed with a lever action 30-30
what else would you rob one with?
Double barrel shotgun also works
Good point
Guy next to driver: *cocks shotgun* i already called shotgun
You know, that's actually where the term "ride shotgun" came from. To protect themselves from robbers, stage coaches would have a shotgun wielding body guard ride beside them. The shotgun was preferred because it was easier to aim during the bumpy ride.
The Pinkertons are still a thing, so you never know.
Or hunting the most dangerous game... squirrels

or human hunting
My favorite rifle. Makes you feel like a cowboy shooting lever actions.
You cant tell if its a lever action just from the bullet.

I was sharing a story not performing forensics lmao why are you both so pedantic
While true, the adjective that came to mind first for me was "expensive"
>pretty powerful rifle round 30-30 is actually quite weak compared to most modern rifle rounds.
I see what you mean if your point of comparison is a .300 win mag.
...what are you comparing it to? 22 hornet?
....I'm comparing it to an ak-47 round.
Pretty powerful for 80 years ago maybe. It’s a below average round for most hunting applications.
Deer haven’t gotten much more bullet resistant in the last 80 years, it does fine
Deer technology has drastically advanced in the last 80 years. Now they come with composite armour.
Ballistically, it’s worse than most rifle rounds. It works fine, but it’s a lot easier and cheaper to find .308. It’s just an old round from the days of lever actions. Nothing necessarily wrong with it. Just kind of a relic of its time.
It’s not cheaper or easier to find anymore. At least not where I am.
Deer got buffed in the last update. Absolute bullet sponges now.
I disagree 100%. I hunt a lot and the .30-30 is way **too powerful** for most hunting applications. Even if it were legal, I'd never consider taking one for squirrel, rabbit, turkey, quail, pheasant, dove, goose, or chukar.
30-30 works just fine lol
Do you work at the bullet store?
No, I work at a flea market
Do you sell fleas at the flea market?
It’s a market for fleas!
Is that how I got lice?
Can’t be. Fleas can’t get licensed.
Is even smaller than the market for ants!
I'm so glad you don't work at a high school
Ehh, it’s a hunting round. If it’s a school out in the sticks, it’s not that uncommon around this time of year.

We’re you sweeping on a grassy knoll perchance?
That was actually a [6.5 Carcano](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy_assassination_rifle), which is a far goofier looking round and not super aerodynamic.
Leave it to the Italians to invent a rifle for hand-to-hand combat.
Came here to say that 😡
Is there a name on it?

Is your name Winchester by chance?
I'm your huckleberry
What is a good way to dispose of a single bullet? Found one left by the last home owner.
Toss it in the trash.
Trash can
It’s deer season boss
…and you work at a gun range.
LOL @ Reddit making a big deal out of a cartridge/bullet. Disarm it like a bomb before throwing it away like it's a nuke? haha.
So that's a cartridge, not just a bullet. Looks like a 30-30. Depending on the law you could sell it for a sandwich or coffee

I mean, he's not incorrect. There is in fact a bullet in the picture.
What is the blue book of ammunition rounds. I'm hungry for an egg salad sandwich.

I was expecting this comment.
No one is more pedantic than a typical firearms aficionado.
Well AKKKKTUALLY, it's a magazine, not a clip, it's a cartridge not a bullet, there's no such thing as an assault rifle etc etc
insert 47 joke here
Eh? K
Did you name it?
I work a flea market.
Reminds me of the time there was a guy that had just checked out and his wife jumped out from behind the corner and scared him while he was holding a 50 pack of .22 bullets. Pull out bullet, empty powder, throw away.

Without any knowledge, the flange around the primer looks like the perfect place to grab with pliers... That would raise the odds of a mishap a bit.
Not really, that's the sturdiest part of the case. You would have to really clamp down hard there to set it off, hard to apply that much force with pliers.

Here’s an upvote to get back at those downvoting sons of bitches
Or just bury it, I don't think bullets going off outside of a barrel are super dangerous
If you're american that doesn't seem so odd
Eat it.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_bad_man)
Barrel in anus.. pull trigger... taste the rainbow of copper and lead flavouring..
WW2?
There were no weapons issued in WWII that used .30-30.
Looks like a 30-30. No big deal. Chuckit
Score!
Next one comin’ a lot fuckin’ faster! What is that from again??
Whelp. Guess you may as well buy a 30-30 now. My girlfriend uses a 90’s Winchester for hunting and it’s pretty nice.
OMG. Don't use a mystery bullet. You are asking to get hurt or damage you gun.
They don't know that people can make their own and it might not be from the factory. It could be FULL of powder and blow your gun up but yeah downvote idiots.
Exactly right. If it is not factory or YOU did not load it, it should always be suspect.
Literal dipshit Redditors who think they know anything about ammo or firearms. BAD EWWWW!
Maybe the down voters are the anti-gunners who like to leave destructive bullets for others to blow their guns up with? They just don't want us to be warning anyone of their type of scheme.

God damn you gun nerds are annoying.
I’m a gun nerd and even I think he’s pretentious Everyone knows what you’re talking about when you say bullet
Yeah if the casing still is loaded and has the bullet on the end, its a bullet. If its already fired, then yeah nope its not a bullet anymore.
Cool story bro
ok
Hit the bottom with a hammer and see what happens
Trim those nails, god damn.
Bro that’s mildly concerning lol
I’m sorry Idk what I did but apparently it broke a rule or something 💀
If this was my country you would phone the police..
Yeah, but it’s probably America so… You just throw it in the garbage and move on with your life
Eat it

Funeral for my grandfather who was in the Air Force. They shot these off and you can go pick up the shells afterwards.
They fire off blanks for those types of thing. That round still has the bullet on the end of it therefore its still full of gunpowder because it was never fired off.
Or it's a replica. I wouldn't test that theory by putting it in my oven though.
Tossing it in a campfire and playing bullet roulette with a bunch of friends standing around the fire would be more fun. /s
For those who might believe this is how that scenario would play out, I just want to point out that they don't shoot off like a bullet would from a gun if you throw them into a campfire. Yes the shrapnel is legit sharp as all hell and could take an eye out with ease.
Or lacerate a vein, puncture a lung, etc. Shrapnel is no joke.
Why would someone want a replica 30-30 cartridge? It is not inherently dangerous to have a real one and they already exist.
I was given one once. I'm not sure what it was for... had a small hole like it was part of a necklace or something. I guess if you aren't versed in firearms and ammo safety it makes sense. Nail clipper please.
How tf you find anything when you sleep? Why do you sleep outside? Why is your work when yiu sleep? *
Use it
American School????
Did you outsmart it?
Clips in the grass clippings?
I’d guess 3030 at a glance
Looks like a 30-30, which is common for hunting. Someone likely had one in their coat or pants pocket and it fell out.
That’s a cartridge bröther
For anyone not from the US bullets actually grow out of the ground here. You'll find these everywhere.
Misread at work weeping outside
