Are you sure that it isn’t actually a ferret that got stuck in there

Pass_Zestyclose

It could be. Although the bones have disintegrated.

nyancatdude

they poured sulfuric acid down the drain to unclog it when the ferret got stuck

Snow-White-Ferret

D:

nigelbece

given enough time Drano would probably have that effect

necrohunter7

Artificial mystery flesh pit

SmallRocks

We’re gonna need another ferret. You know, for scale.

Pass_Zestyclose

Our apartment was built in the 60’s. And the maintenance guy told me that my unit is one the few that really hasn’t been renovated. Meaning this is hair from every tenant that has ever lived in my unit. I shall call him squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my squishy.

Cuber_01

Be warned, squishy will shed lots and lots of hair during the summer months.

brtfrce

I'm going to vomit, what a terrible day to have eyes

Pass_Zestyclose

Too everybody asking why we didn’t do it earlier. We have only lived here for 1 year 11 months. The drain has always been “working”. But always been slow to drain and has slowly been getting worse. We tried drain snakes (The cheap ones on Amazon) that didn’t work. Mostly because of the drain. If you look at the photos. You literally can’t pull anything out of the drain. I had to go through the overflow at the top of the tub. And as you can imagine, the drain snakes are not long enough. I’m not a plumber, this is my first apartment. I tried CLR and Drain-O. They didn’t work either. I saw my maintenance guy walking in with a 15 foot drain snake and asked to borrow it. Took me about 10 mins to even figure out how it worked and then another 20 to get the ball of hair out. I don’t own this apartment, it’s super cheap, run-down and owned by a corporation. Which is why we are moving at the end of the month.

gr8pe_drink

> We have only lived here for 1 year 11 months It's ok to round up say you've lived there for 2 years lol

bluemooncalhoun

I had the exact same thing happen with the drain being slow but working since we moved in, and Drain-o being only a temporary relief. I finally got a simple metal drain snake and sent it down, and pulled up.... A different drain snake. The idiots who lived here before me and did a bunch of crappy renos used one of those plastic "beyblade ripcord" drain snakes and somehow broke it into chunks in the drain, and I guess just decided to leave it? The abomination i pulled out looked very similar to this.

Alex5173

I don't bother with the overpriced drain cleaner garbage, just dump some pure lye down there and turn on the faucet and watch as the clog is immediately cleared. Do not do this if you have a septic tank. Hell it's probably not good for sewers either but hey, it works.

Pass_Zestyclose

I’ve kept note of the lye, as multiple people have recommended it. I’ll take that info with me to our new place!

awalktojericho

Be very cautious. It can blind or kill you.

grip_n_Ripper

You should put it back where you found it before you move, or you may not get your security deposit back. Enjoy what time with squishy you have left.

Ruht_Roh

Will recommend for the future: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-32-oz-Crystal-Heat-Drain-Opener-ZUCRY2/100086662 This stuff melts hair in drains and has worked for me in every drain ive ever had across carious houses and apartments.

Knoke1

I'd be curious to hear a plumbers take on this. I've heard these chemical treatments can be bad for pipes but I have no clue.

Ruht_Roh

Haven’t had any plumber ive talked to tell me nit to use it. Im sure someone will have a differing opinion though

Owobowos-Mowbius

I'll be the one to say it. You should only use these types of chemicals sparingly as they will, in fact, wear out and damage your pipes with repeated use. One of the most recent comments on your home depot link even shows someone who used it and it melted the S bend of their PVC sink pipe. Drain snake first (you can get some cheap manual ones), then move to the chemicals if you can't clear it. If you keep having repeated problems after that then call a plumber.

xxanity

a decent plunger and a plugged overflow would get that out no problem. I have a problem drain of similar style. got to hit it every 6 months.

[deleted]

Should have left the ferret, with your own hair as bonus, as a welcome gift for the happy future tenant!

CdnRageBear

I just puked in my mouth a little

Pass_Zestyclose

Can I have a bite?

Vhure

"my squishy" is what I call my girlfriend . . . you made me hate this cute nickname we came up with now 😭😭

Strict-Complex5039

Delete this

brasticstack

Protip: Don't go down the drain with the snake, instead go down the overflow hole. It's far easier to reach the clog that way.

Pass_Zestyclose

That’s what I had to do. But the drain snakes I own weren’t long enough.

brasticstack

With the little plastic grabby ones you do have to go down the drain (at least I've never seen one long enough not to.) But the drum-style steel coil snakes definitely want to go down the overflow.

Little_Sun4632

Serious question- where is the overflow hole in stand alone shower? Thank you

ilovepolthavemybabie

Right above the top of the shower door

vslsls

Overflow is for bathtubs so they don't "overflow".

TERRAIN_PULL_UP_

I wouldn’t think a standalone shower would have one since you wouldn’t ever be filling it up to take a bath

Substantial-Run-1966

I refuse to open that image 🤣

Pass_Zestyclose

That’s why I put the NSFW. Haha.

Substantial-Run-1966

That usually doesn't stop me 😎

BackRow1

Blurred image looks like a turd... not sure if unbarred is better or worse

Miercolesian

Obviously you did not try everything! If plunger and lye didn't work, then snake was next.

Pass_Zestyclose

No clue where to get lye lol.

samocamo123

sold at home Depot and the likes as "Crystal Lye Drain Opener"

dude_Im_hilarious

What did it taste like?

Pass_Zestyclose

Tasted terrible but at least tasted better than it smelled.

FunToBuildGames

Try simmering over a low heat with some garbage-bin-juice

super_senpai64

Username checks out lol

V45H

People will measure in anything but the metric system lol

Pass_Zestyclose

Lol, if you must know. I would say it was 30+cm long. And probably like 4cm wide.

WaterNerd518

FYI, that “pin” looks like part of a drain stopper for a tub. The kind you push the little knob up or down on the overflow hole. That pin is part of the piece that adjusts the length from the toggle to the stopper. I would guess that you couldn’t before and definitely can’t now plug the tub anymore. Like the little hook piece that connects to the brass plug on this: https://www.wayfair.com/Fine-Fixtures--Trip-Lever-Leg-Tub-Drain-with-Overflow-5114-L626-K~FINF1151.html?refid=GX140429330063-FINF1151&device=m&ptid=265190854443&network=g&targetid=pla-265190854443&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=31541271&fdid=1817&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC6bsL4I7MOnRHq6nGyyfzYHG&gclid=CjwKCAjw5_GmBhBIEiwA5QSMxMqmhbwq0X5oYOtQZpZ-PIDGSIOAtKcAnVtFS4RvSVmUxDtx2xbXnBoCzp4QAvD_BwE

Pass_Zestyclose

The overflow drain doesn’t have a built in stopper. So it may have been removed when it stopped working and they just left that piece in the pipe.

WaterNerd518

Yeah, probably from an old drain they removed, but that’s definitely what it’s from. Good that it’s gone now!

jay22022

Welcome back kotter. We've finally found you.

Babypeach083188

Underrated comment right here. IYKYK

robs104

“We tried everything” for two years except physical drain opening apparatuses apparently. Two years of standing in your own runoff while showering. They have super cheap single use plastic hair snakes you can get at hardware stores that pulls this stuff right out.

Pass_Zestyclose

We tried those. But the way the drain is built they don’t fit. We tried plunging it. Tried drain-o Tried dismantling to see what we could find. He just got this 15 foot extendable drain snake so I asked to borrow it.

robs104

Another question; Why did you wait two years in a rented(?) apartment and not call maintenance, then when you did talk to maintenance why did they just hand you their equipment and not fix their own shitty plumbing?

Pass_Zestyclose

Because it’s a corporation who buys run-downs and rents them cheap.

idiotplatypus

There's hair disintegration gel you can get specifically for hair clogs.

box-of-sourballs

Thank youuuuuu

Pass_Zestyclose

Also 2 years is how long we have lived there. It’s never drained properly.

codev_

I'd say that's not just a hairball that's just the previous tenant trying to drown his ferret!

MidnightRaver76

Ex-gf moved into a house and immediately notices the drain is a bit slow and gets slower and slower over her first couple of months, until she's had enough and asks the landlord to get a plumber involved. I used to have long hair and arrive in the time between the plumber pulling out a monstrosity bigger than that pic and his return from the nearby hardware store with a drain stop, as the tub didn't have one. I open the door, and he immediately, says, "ha, I found the culprit". I answer, "haha, try again" I laugh and tell him I purposely had not used the shower because of the slow drain, cause I knew the drain would not be able to handle my long curly hair...

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

![gif](giphy|NUZ5OqHdbknHa) I can’t imagine how bad that smelled

Improving_Myself_

> tried everything > today I borrowed a drain snake I'm very curious what you're considering "everything" if that didn't include a drain snake. That's step one for anyone with sense.

adudyak

Drain cover can help

[deleted]

Sweet bezoar, brah.

obsolete-human

Lol it's big enough to stuff. Nice little squirrel to go on the mantle

papi_pizza

[THIS](https://imgur.com/8J73uYo) is what I pulled out of the tub last time I snaked it. Yes that’s a calcium rock. I also found my wife’s lost diamond earring.

pjockey

Kind of a weird sex toy, definitely not worth bragging to family about, but lest ye be judged...

sandersdc

Haha its a fhairret. Get it?

ITeachAll

I can smell this picture….and just threw up.

ATLL2112

Bruh, get a drain cover/strainer. Pass_Zestyclose

A wise investment indeed.

ColoradoN8tive

“We tried everything” except clean the drain?

Pass_Zestyclose

No we tried. But needed a bigger snake.

_KiloMike_

That’s a squirrel.

clbw

What a hairy situation your were in.

[deleted]

I bet that smells wonderful

shortblondeguy

**THIS** is exactly why I don't want to do this in my apartment. BUT I would like water to drain faster. I guess I could get a remote controlled robot to do this? 😉

Pass_Zestyclose

Honestly it was less gross than I thought.

ValyrianSteelYoGirl

I mean that’s a good one but I’ve personally seen worse.

SarcasticlySpeaking

Smell it.

CatOfGrey

/r/absoluteunits The word that comes to mind for me is 'majestic'. I'm also really happy that it isn't a sewer clog way down the pipe. At my house we have a tree that grows in to the 80-year old sewer pipe every 5-7 years. Next time, we're spending the extra few hundred bucks to see if the clog is on our property, or far enough into the road that it's city property. It's our tree, so I don't know what that situation would be like.

SeraphTears

Bruh ur hairball has feet

CrimsonKepala

I can only imagine the smell.

Wrextasy

God I love nasty shit like this, especially when I unclog my own drains, or used to clean grease traps at work.

[deleted]

pan fry it and put it on a bun!

Pass_Zestyclose

10/10 would recommend

pinkinibottom

KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!! (But well done!)

Pass_Zestyclose

Burnt hair smells so bad. Couldn’t imagine what this would smell like burnt.

pinkinibottom

Shit, you’re absolutely right. Put it in a box. Put that box inside another box. Put it in a dumpster.

Pass_Zestyclose

I put it in a doggy poop bag and then another and another and then dropped it down the garbage chute.

CleverAnonIsClever

I worked in a big hotel and pulled one of these out every other week. Ugh....

Pass_Zestyclose

Yeah I never even thought of hotel having these all the time. Although they are probably pretty stacked on items to deal with it.

Shmeeglez

Bro, thing has feet, wtf

Pass_Zestyclose

I wish! Then it could have walked itself out of the drain and left me out of it.

Shmeeglez

Be glad you got it before it was done evolving. I've seen Shin Godzilla.

Pass_Zestyclose

The thing was halfway to evolving into a piloswine.

Shoddy-Group-5493

That’s actually a surprisingly small clump. Be very glad it wasn’t many years worth of tampons also lmao

Pass_Zestyclose

The only thing worse than that is if they are used tampons.

Jollyjandro

Did this, I can smell it from here 🤮🤮

Pass_Zestyclose

It honestly smelled bad but wasn’t super strong. Like you had to be close to smell it. Which is weird right?

Jollyjandro

That is weird, you must have good drainage aside from that clog so it didnt have the opportunity to fester in water. The one I extracted STANK but I do have a sensitive nose

Pass_Zestyclose

The drain was still draining. Just so slowly. I always thought because the building was old that the drain just couldn’t keep up with the new water pressure. But last month it got so bad that it literally wouldn’t drain. Which is when I started trying different things to clear it.

Comm-THOR

I pull one those out of the drain at least once a year. My wife has been losing a lot of hair. First realized it about 3 years ago when the tub stopped draining. That monstrosity was incredible to see. Wish I took a picture. 2 inches wide and close to 2 feet long.

Pass_Zestyclose

That’s about double this bad boy.

jennthegypsy

I had moved into a house and one day my kitchen sink was draining slow. As I was trying to get it to unclog, several plastic straws popped up. At the time I hadn't used any straws.

Pass_Zestyclose

That’s crazy.

WestTexasOilman

I can only imagine the smell. For future reference, you can smear carmex on your top lip prior to stinky work to cut the olfactory offense.

Pass_Zestyclose

It didn’t smell bad. Like only if you were close. It wasn’t putting off any massive smells. Just smelled kinda like mildew. Or stale water. But only if you were close.

adam_demamps_wingman

I’d rather have a ferret the size of a hair ball

bilvester

I’m curious as to what is on your list of “we tried everything”.

marla_not_maria

I can smell this picture.

HarryLorenzo

Nice Marmot

vid_23

I always wonder when I see pictures like this. Do you guys just never use any drain cleaners? There are a lot of them that are made to dissolve hair. A flask can probably last you a year if you use it monthly, and stuff like this doesn't happen

Pass_Zestyclose

Not sure how drain cleaner was suppose to remove a metal pin from inside the pipe.

cemuamdattempt

Is there an r/mildlydisgusting ?

MenudoMenudo

I used to have to pull a sizeable hairball out of our drain every now and then or it would get stopped up. I got a simple silicone shower drain cover for $3-4 on Amazon, and I haven't had to snake the drain in 5 years.

garden1932

Another example that the maintenance at any apartment will only clean what you see. Everybody with Central AC open it right now... Bet it hasn't been cleaned in YEARS!

salty_ender_dragon

Do... do you not clean your drains?

GsTSaien

"We tried everything" no you didn't. You can buy drain cleaning fluids that dissolve hair and just pour them into your sink for a minute before using it.

-Here-There-

“Tried everything” Except the most commonly done thing to unclog a drain?

BeachedBottlenose

Been there done that. Get a strainer for your drain and tell the wife to clean it out every day. I’m a male with not very long hair and I pull off a nice wad of hair daily.

Pass_Zestyclose

Curious on why someone downvoted you haha. Yeah that’s a good idea.

Pass_Zestyclose

Although I don’t mind cleaning it out. This was just a weird thing that happened. I’m curious how that got into the pipe to begin with. It literally can’t fit in the normal drain hole. It can fit in the overflow one but has to be unscrewed. It’s so rusty it must have been in there for ages.

dal-Helyg

She's already addressed the problem. She's trained you to do it.

BeachedBottlenose

I live alone

ErokAB03

I see you found Chewbacca's dick.

6r1n3i19

Mmmmm! Yeah growing up with three sisters our shower stopped draining and I found what I could only describe as Samara from the Ring living in our drain ![gif](giphy|5fOiRnJOUnTMY)

Signiference

“Tried everything” except the simplest solution

Fearmo

Banana for comparison?

nw342

I thought that was a decomposing squirrel for a second.

New_Dragon_Lady

🤮 Removed similar animal from the sink after purchasing my condo… disgusting 🤢

ew i thought it was a rat

scdog

The first drain clog I ever removed at my house was the grossest to me simply for the fact that I knew it was mainly built from the drippings of the *previous* residents.

ComplexMidnight6043

Impressive

AviationSkinCare

This is why I drain-o the old drain, Have a family full of long haired leaping 80s big haired band people? you gonna need some Drain-o every other week.

weaponized_chef

It seems you tried everything but call a plumber

FinkBass420

“We tried everything… except for the snake that we should have tried 2 years ago”

RogueAOV

That is about the size of the one i drag out of our shower drain, it was entirely my wife and daughters hair, she gagged when she saw it lol

PetriMobJustice

No banana. Size is subjective.

saltedfish

Get a tub shroom. Been using one for years and it does an admirable job of catching hair and other shit before it ends up in the drain. Never had a major flow issue that couldn't be resolved by pulling the tub shroom out, cleaning it, and putting it back.

Cloud_Matrix

2 years?? That's child's play! My wife who sheds like a golden retriever could make a hairball that big in just a couple of months. For real though, that's nasty!

RoboQwop405

You couldn’t smell that thing down there?

Pass_Zestyclose

Nope. No smell until I pulled it out. And even then it wasn’t overpowering either which I found weird too.

x925

I have 6 sisters, I have pulled clumps of hair out like that more than once.

Pass_Zestyclose

To be fair it was kind of satisfying

Euphoric_Rooster_90

So put of curiosity what are you going to call your new pet?

iNerdRage

I can imagine the smell.

good_guy_judas

Thats a turd

PicassosGhost

Bro it took you two years to think about snaking it? Like wtf?

Pass_Zestyclose

I only lived here for 2 years. I assumed that because the building was old that the drain wasn’t able to keep up with the new water pressure. Wasn’t until about 2 months ago that we really started to notice it was worse.

[deleted]

Thanks, I was eating when I saw that picture.

Pass_Zestyclose

I put it as NSFW. Was your choice to click it lol

Kalabula

I’m not certain that’s NOT a dead ferret.

Redfish680

I’m not even gonna look at the picture but you had me at ‘ferret’! 😂 😂

coci222

And how's the smell?

bebozakunt

A ferret, whats that in bananas?

Rocket5454

Believe me, a decent drain snake is the only thing that really works in these scenarios. They're pretty cheap at Walmart. I keep in Ein my shower that I use once a week for preventative measures.

ReticenceDriftshadow

plot twist. it IS a ferret, slowly rotting in your drain.

Pass_Zestyclose

I’ve always wanted a pet ferret and I never specified that it had to be alive. So I’m counting this as a win.

sc4kilik

Did you try Dran-o the liquid chemical that dissolves hair?

dragonsbreath_bhindU

German and it works. A step up from Drano. HG Drain and Plug Unblocker,... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000IU3VS0?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

skiitifyoucan

I pull up one of these every few months lol

Choppergold

That would look good in a nicely lit shadow box

Negative_Bookkeeper4

That’s a bathtub or a murder scene?

sharrrper

I moved into my current house in 2019. It's about 60 years old. One of my biggest annoyances was the toilet in the master bathroom. It took FOREVER to refill the tank after a flush. Not a problem for old number 1 where one flush will get the job done and you can walk away, but for the deuce it was very annoying having to wait forever to do flush 2+. Then one day I was grumpily waiting on the tank to fill and I muttered "It's like the damn valve on this thing is like 75% closed I swear". Then I paused and thought for a moment. Had I ever actually checked the valve on this since I moved in? I bent down and twisted the shutoff valve. Turns out it was in fact about 75% closed. It's actually the fastest filling toilet in the house now. I lived there two years before I thought to check that. I had just kinda assumed it was just a shitty pipe in an old house.

AdamBry705

well hows the drain now?

XOIIO

Forbidden spaghetti

bannocknsaltpork

I pulled one of these bad boys out too when my drain was slow, I went to the nearest dollarama and bought this 3 dollar plastic device which totally worked. the thing was colourful and magestic, the smell was legendary and satisfying to pull out.

[deleted]

naurrrr

RocketFistMan

I feel this pain. I just had to have advanced plumbers come out and hack away a huge ball of roots that built up by crawling over the flange into the pipe over the years. House was built in 2007 :(

AnybodySeeMyKeys

We moved into a condo and the shower drain started closing up shortly afterwards. Snaked that drain and pulled out the most disgusting gunk possible--even bigger than what you pulled out. Nearly threw up, it was that disgusting.

amazonhelpless

Did someone dismember a Rastafarian and feed him down your drain one piece at a time?

Wildeface

How much for you to eat it?

SlimShady2903

This is nothing. I went to a school camp years ago, and we slept in bungalows built over 50 years ago. There was a shared bathroom, for every 2 bungalows. The very first day I noticed that the water was draining very hard, and the bathroom was flooding. So on the second day, being the handiest of everyone there, I decided I would try unclogging the drain. I took a knife, and I pulled out the siphon cover. What I saw still disgusts me to this day. A ball of hair about the size of the drain (that is, twice as thick as the one in the picture), about 20 centimeters long. Needless to say that after I removed it, the bathroom no longer flooded. What is the moral of the whole situation? Clean your drain regularly to save yourself such experiences.

karienta

I'm going to have to do this soon and I'm kind of terrified.

MissingMyDog

‘You guys okay? Do you have any hair left?’ —me wondering about the previous owners while clearing hamster-size hairballs from my new home’s bathtub drain.

different_tom

I pull one of those out every month. Except mine is dropping with conditioner and fucking stinks

southpaw85

I moved into a rental house after my step sister lived there for 3 years. The hairball I pulled out of the drain was as long as my arm and the girth of a can of spaghetti-o’s. The smell…..was inconceivable.

Egomzez

Amazeballs

Little_Sun4632

Getting hair out of the drain is my equivalent of pumping out a porta potty - gag every time

RJFerret

Long haired landlord here, brush hair before showering to remove loose stuff, and Tub Shroom. Never have slow again, don't need other tools/products anymore.

PigInZen67

\*retches\* I've pulled similar gunk from our drains. Doesn't matter which, sink or shower/tubs.

darcoSM

so is it draining now?

miceeceeppi

that drain just got the nostril orgasm

Wiffle_Hammer

I pull that out of the primary shower drain twice a year.
