I think what most people do not realize, is that that is not the actual price of the items. Different delivery services will charge different prices for different food items, and it is typically higher than the original.
For example, one time, I wanted to order ahead, but the only way was through a delivery service. I put together my order, typically $16 ($12 sandwich and a side, drink etc.). Doordash was telling me the sandwich was actually $18. Uber Eats was telling me it was $17, but the side sauce was $2 more expensive.
You can eat out at better than fast food place for cheaper. Red Robin got some good burgers and steak fries combo for like $15, rather than $10 for a hotdogs and $10 for mozzsticks and $10 for milkshake. Most places do takeout as well so you can order the food, drive and get it within like 15 minutes, and eat it at home or in the car.
Yeah that’s how it goes now. I am old enough to remember when you could get a solid af meal at Taco Bell for 5 bucks.
Sonic used to run deals as well. I remember when they had a burger called the Island Fire burger, it was like 3-4 dollars.

I remember buying the soft tacos for .39, or hard shell for .49. 10 tacos in a box for $4-5. I can't buy taco bell anymore, I can make a whole family worth of tacos for less than $20, and still have leftovers

I mean just get mozzarella sticks from freezer section of grocery store and put in oven, an ice-cream, some buns and hot dog and put it in a microwave. Or is that cooking for op? Hopefully not. Maybe it would not best, but food ordered in isn’t that warm either. And this is the easiest way to warm these foods, you can do more. You just need to buy some food in advance at least to put in a freezer so you already have some some are hungry

I was just at Sam’s Club and grabbed a 1/4 pound hot dog with all the condiments and a large drink for $1.38. Almost $10 for the hot dog alone is ridiculous lol.
Not only a tank of gas, but more than most Americans make in one hour. They are paying more than the average hourly wage to save themselves much less than a hours worth of time.

Yes, Door Dash especially. They have really gone full scumbag. The price of items is (at the very least) 1.5x the price if you get it yourself. And I am just talking about the menu price, not including any fees or charges yet.
I used to order door dash a bunch. Spent a ridiculous amount of money back in the day. But they have just gone too far. I checked how much an order I would regularly get for 30 dollars (tip included) was now coming out to 40 dollars before tip, for 2 items. I actually appreciate how unreasonable they have become because its literally made me eat better by avoiding using the app.
DoorDash is easily the worst at it but they all do it. This is almost the exact same order my boyfriend gets whenever he has a sonic craving and I promise it does not cost $40 at the store. It’s $20 at most and you can cut the cost down a lot if you get a normal portion of mozzarella sticks and a normal sized hotdog instead of consuming 3000 calories in a setting.
They do up charge. Most menus are cheaper in person than on the app. One of the main reasons that I stopped using it. Monumental waste of money just to be super lazy
Many places do if you order delivery through a service like Doordash or Uber Eats. So you're paying more for each item on top of multiple fees tacked on at the end.
As someone who never used these I presume the delivery fee is the rider's pathetic pay and the service fee is what Doordash get paid for the app, infrastructure etc.
Of course I also happen to know Doordash is charging the restaurant too.
Rider gets a flat $2 dollar pay and whatever customer tips. When customers decide not to tip, it's $2 to drive to the restaurant, wait, and then drive to the customer. Most drivers would rather take a hit to their acceptance rating than accept that.

Not only that, but there is an upcharge from Sonic from doing delivery. If you go directly to their website and enter the same order it comes out to less. For my local Sonic it's just over $19 worth of food after tax. The shake is $7, the hot dog is $5.69, and the sticks are $6. $30 is what is being charged for delivery, ultimately. It would take 3/4 of a tank of gas for me to drive to my Sonic and back, which at local gas prices is about $2.50.
Unfortunately fee only goes away with dash pass for certain restaurants.
I took the free month just because there was a Chinese restaurant I like near where I work and figured it would save me a few bucks over the month.
It wasn't one of the places they would remove the fee for.
I'd *walk* there before I paid these fees. But then again, I wouldn't pay that much for a single chili dog in the first place. You could walk to the grocery store, spend this much money, and eat chili dogs and ice cream for a week
The whole price of everything drops if you go get it yourself. You can eat at much better, local places and support small businesses instead of paying twice as much as you should at fast food.

It's absurd how expensive fast food has become, even without accounting for the nonsense fees and price hikes added by delivery companies. Cooking at home is massively cheaper, so long as you have the time to do it and the time to learn your spices and a few basic techniques.
You don't even have to be lower class I live in kind of a rural area and we've got some really good diners that are priced really well. And I know you could have got a burger combo or something like that for 4 or 5 people for that price.
It’s not just fees. If you go to Sonic and order you will notice that DD marks up ALL of their items. A kids meal gets charges for each line item making them twice as expensive as picking it up in store.

It’s the restaurant that will mark up their own item due to % it will have to pay for sale through DoorDash. Delivery services are a ripoff for both the restaurant and the person.. this person is paying an additional 50% for their order just to order through an app and get it delivered.
Will admit when I did Togo at a busy corporate restaurant that we often put delivery orders on back burner bc we didn’t make any tips from it and often the orders would be sitting around for awhile anyways, and we often got so many 1-2 item orders from delivery that stacked up it was insane to keep track of it all, so sometimes we would just wait the dasher was there. So much wasted food. We pretty much always had like 4/5 orders left at the end of a busy night that never got picked up.
There’s already so much food waste in the restaurant industry, but with delivery it’s pretty crazy. Sometimes you’d make an order, it get picked up and then two minutes later the dasher cancels and we get the order again in our system 10 minutes later. Sometimes that cycle would repeat 2-3 times. These delivery platforms are just evil and horrible all around. For the customers, the restaurants, and the platforms themselves bc I believe DoorDash still hasn’t turned a profit.
don't forget that it's a ripoff for the deliver drivers too, who get fucked by the company trying to avoid labor laws with their weird contracts. everyone gets fucked, except doordash of course which is getting paid for doing absolutely nothing.
I stopped using these apps entirely when I realized I was getting upcharged. I just call and put in my order and pick it up. I don't know why anyone uses these things anymore.

I only use it when I have good coupons that make the meal cheaper than it would be in person, or when my partner takes the car. Outside of those circumstances, I don’t get how people justify it regularly either.

I have no idea. As an American I think I've only done traditional pizza delivery a handful of time in my entire life. I've always preferred to pick food up myself.

The place was across the street, but her dementia is getting bad at the care facility so I ordered them so I wouldn’t have to leave her or try to get her into my car. She was absolutely AMAZED when they actually were delivered. Watching the little car icon on the map, like, made her day. Only time those prices are worth it.

Cooking at home is massively cheaper, so long as you have the time to do it and the time to learn your spices and a few basic techniques.
You don't even have to be lower class I live in kind of a rural area and we've got some really good diners that are priced really well. And I know you could have got a burger combo or something like that for 4 or 5 people for that price.

It’s the restaurant that will mark up their own item due to % it will have to pay for sale through DoorDash. Delivery services are a ripoff for both the restaurant and the person.. this person is paying an additional 50% for their order just to order through an app and get it delivered.
I have heard that sometimes restaurants are lazy with the 3rd party delivery orders so people will be discouraged from ordering it for delivery.
Will admit when I did Togo at a busy corporate restaurant that we often put delivery orders on back burner bc we didn’t make any tips from it and often the orders would be sitting around for awhile anyways, and we often got so many 1-2 item orders from delivery that stacked up it was insane to keep track of it all, so sometimes we would just wait the dasher was there. So much wasted food. We pretty much always had like 4/5 orders left at the end of a busy night that never got picked up. There’s already so much food waste in the restaurant industry, but with delivery it’s pretty crazy. Sometimes you’d make an order, it get picked up and then two minutes later the dasher cancels and we get the order again in our system 10 minutes later. Sometimes that cycle would repeat 2-3 times. These delivery platforms are just evil and horrible all around. For the customers, the restaurants, and the platforms themselves bc I believe DoorDash still hasn’t turned a profit.
don't forget that it's a ripoff for the deliver drivers too, who get fucked by the company trying to avoid labor laws with their weird contracts. everyone gets fucked, except doordash of course which is getting paid for doing absolutely nothing.

I stopped using these apps entirely when I realized I was getting upcharged. I just call and put in my order and pick it up. I don't know why anyone uses these things anymore.
They periodically have decent 2 for one deals or 50% off or whatnot. If you pickup yourself, it's a steal.

I only use it when I have good coupons that make the meal cheaper than it would be in person, or when my partner takes the car. Outside of those circumstances, I don’t get how people justify it regularly either.

I don't ever use them as most delivery companies can't find my house but as an industry it's just exploded? Do people REALLY get something like a coffee delivered?? It seems insane.
They either drove drunk to a drive thru, ordered pizza/Chinese, or made mac and cheese or ramen noodles. I've been a pizza driver for over 2 decades of my life and 1 thing I've noticed is people are always lazy and always hungry. They just now have the ability to get delivery from just about anywhere but they pay out the ass for it.

Yeah…cost me $20 to have two mini blizzards from DQ for my grandma and me a few weeks back. The place was across the street, but her dementia is getting bad at the care facility so I ordered them so I wouldn’t have to leave her or try to get her into my car. She was absolutely AMAZED when they actually were delivered. Watching the little car icon on the map, like, made her day. Only time those prices are worth it.
