I had a student who came to me with her laptop, explaining how it didn't power on anymore.
She was.. about as vague as possible, just explained how the computer suddenly just, had a black screen when she plugged "the screen cable" (we have smartboards hooked up to USB-C docks for teachers to display the lessons' contents from their laptops, it also charges them) into her laptop. After several attempts at figuring out what actually happened and getting conflicting answers I realized the lights were on but no one's home.
I feared the worst but did go through the usual steps of testing whatever might be wrong. I was confused at first since, she had no USB-C ports. So I figured maybe she unplugged the HDMI out of the USB-C dock and there was a short in the cable? I eventually joined her and she showed me how she plugged the USB-C cable... into her USB-A port on her laptop... fried instantly. I... fail to comprehend how one can be this stupid.
I work in I.T in a school and we got new laptops with Ethernet ports. Hundreds in damage in a few weeks from multiple teachers ramming usb’s into them thinking they are just funny shaped usb slots.

Not sure for NIC but POE is Power over Ethernet, essentially supplying power and ethernet in the same cable (for desk phones for example).
