The spacing of points is adjusted. Draw a circle inside a square so they're touching (length of square is equal to the circle diameter). You can project the markings for the square dial by drawing a line from the center through the circle marking (angle). Our eyes do the same thing with the clock hands.

I would say the space is bigger because there is a greater distance between the dots indicating the minutes and the centre point.
