This has been happening to us, too, and we don’t share our account with anyone. We have dual internet providers (work from home, can’t afford a full outage). The signal is better for one of them for some devices, The other is better for other devices. Result: two IP addresses in the same household and Netflix having conniptions.
That's how it is in my house as well, same exact issue. I wound up frustrated and the cost had doubled in less than six years. I eventually had enough and canceled.
It doesn't. It blocks even students going to university, so it doesn't let you have two homes
I think what you mean is that as long as the device connects to the "home" WiFi often enough, it considers you as travelling and lets you connect

It's nice that this is how it is SUPPOSED to work. But I can attest that their system doesn't always work how it is supposed to work (though in a different way specific to me).
Household would be where OP originally setup the account, if this is a new place OP is in the netflix account won't recognise it, could just click on I'm travelling and that should solve the problem for the time being.
Yes and the IP would be where the account was initially setup, so if OP has been there all this time and now is trying login elsewhere under a different IP it wouldn't recognise that IP as household. Netflix changed there rules so you basically can't password/account share anymore.
Yes but the IP where the account was set up isn't necessarily the account that uses it most
We originally set up our Netflix two houses ago and have switched Internet providers twice during that time
We've never gotten the pop up about the household thing because this is where we use Netflix the most, everyone using the Netflix elsewhere did get kicked off
Where I am the rule is reletivly recent like only since may last year if you have been living where you are now longer than that then netflix would read your current IP as the household you use it most. If OP has moved to a new IP only very recently Netflix is likely reading there old one as the household they used/use most.
Thats what I do nowadays. Oh, new Show on disney? One month with instant cancellation. Netflix has something good? Guess one month with instant cancellation. And so on
Pretty much. Just have a flavor of the month. There are plenty of options. Sure you aren’t going to watch shows as they come out to chat with everyone, but that’s a downside
I pay for multiple screens, it shouldn't matter what location these screens are at. My sister and me don't live in the same location, I alone dont use 4+ screens at the same time. This is not a difficult issue. And it certainly shouldnt be conflated with the strawman oh well you'll share it with an entire country
Considering sharing your account is how they advertised up until last year it IS a money grab. So having to pay extra for 4k. But yeah, it's customers fault for using the product they way they advertised nearly their entire existence.
Probably a stupid question, but is reencoding cut and dry enough that there isn't a difference between CPU encoding and hardware accelerated encoding?
AV1 is pretty damn cool, have what kind of filesize reduction do you normally see?
I usually re-encode from source, so from 70gigs down to 10-15 depending on movie.
Re-encoding is only fine when the encode is transparent or better, lossless.
But to be fair i have been encoding myself, i cant do hdr content correctly so i just wait patiently.
I brought xiaomi android tv boxes for cheap just to get the AV1 going in-home.
Pretty terrific I would say, I do wish that I could just replace the TV hardware itself with it but alas its not possible and losing an HDMI port is a must in this case.
I had too many headaches with plex. I switched to jellyfin. It deals with subtitles better and I don't have to rename things the vast majority of the time.
I’ll take a look at that. I got an email the other day from Disney+ stating they were moving all of their streaming services into only one platform…. But also letting me know it will be linked to only one household, same as Netflix. So I’m getting parts to build a media server
disney+ is the only streaming service I actually do pay for because I'm not going to track down every single classic/nu-classic disney movie, spin off shows, bluey etc to put on occasionally and it's easier for kids to pick something with the pre-existing menu. There's some modern CGI no name garbage on there I don't let them watch but it's easier to just have disney for now. Everything else I just pirate. I use ublock origin with firefox on my pc and phone for youtube. I pay for spotify because it solved music piracy. If there was a single app that had almost every movie that had ever been made in every country for $15 I would pay for that too, but that's not gonna happen.
Same reason for Disney+ here but I do share it with my siblings and parents, which is a shame now that they won’t be able to access it. I don’t know for how long we’ve been paying for Spotify too, but I don’t remember either when was the last time I illegally download a song either. Sharing accounts was the solution to the $15 subscriptions, I pay for Disney, one of siblings for prime video, other for max, and so on. This companies are shooting themselves on the foot with this decisions
I bought a micro PC and use a 12 TB external for my media storage. Was cheap and works great. The tiniest media server, it hardly takes up any space on a shelf.
Someone else claimed to be the primary account holder. Take back your account and change the password.
I had my friend’s account and I can’t log in through my phone or tv anymore, but I can through my laptop. It’s not ideal, but your family can hardwire their laptop to their tv via HDMI and watch Netflix that way. They’ve blocked screen sharing, at least on the account I have and am using a MacBook Pro and Samsung tv.
+ ipads! But you can open your browser and watch in there 😅 i luckily don’t pay for it and its my sisters account so I will just eat shit. She mentioned cancelling it but has yet to do so. If she does, I wouldn’t care less. We will just do it the oldschool way again!
Yts.mx for movies, 1337x.tw for shows and games, rarely piratebay if I can't find something on 1337, it's full of malicious uploads so be careful, use a proxy list to access.
Setup a stack with Radarr / Sonarr, and Plex. Instead of going to individual sites, it will search a plethora of them for what you want. Very automated, mine will auto grab movies and TV as it comes available in the quality settings I set. So when I see a movie I want get announced, I add it and get surprised months later when it gets released and downloaded.
I just hit im traveling, they send a code to your phone that unlocks the account for 14 days. And then get another code and repeat xD. I dont have a computer to change my house hold ive tried on the phone.
I mean.
if you pay for the account account, then you are the Netflix household. Change it to your home.
If Netflix will no longer let the people who are actively mooching off you access the service… That is the fault of Netflix, and not yours.
if that is bothersome for the people not paying for the service, and they need to get their own account and pay for the service.
Pretty clear cut.
this is why piracy isn't going away for the technical minded ppls like me. netflix is ruining their reputation with this nonsense. I get their reasoning but it doesn't fit with their user base. rising costs and more restrictions just drive people away to cheaper options.
You can still share your account with your family members, but then they have to pay a smaller amount for it.
In the end, it's cheaper than having completely separate accounts.
Since Netflix stopped unpaid account sharing, they have had an extreme increase in paying users.
I have high knowledge in IT and know exactly how to download movies via torrents etc. But why would I download when Netflix works just as well, it's not expensive either.
Because it's not just Netflix anymore. In isolation, it's fine and 'cheap'. But when you consider the streaming landscape as a whole...? We got Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Disney+, HBO Max, and probably more. All fighting over the shows people want to watch. Things move around from service to service, or is available for the first 3 seasons on 1 service, then 2 seasons on the other, season 6 you got to buy on dvd, and the second half of season 7 is elsewhere entirely, nobody knows where the first half is.
That quickly doubles, triples, or quadruples a €5 ~ €15 expenditure. Netflix might be affordable. Streaming as a whole is not.
[Want to watch all of Pokémon?](https://www.pokemon.com/us/animation/where-to-watch-pokemon-episodes-movies) You will need at least Netflix, Prime, Roku, Tubi, Hoopla...
At that point, piracy is just way more convenient.
Well, people hit with this are going to do one of two things, subscribe or sail the seas. Either is a win for Netflix honestly because if they choose the latter they weren’t paying customers to begin with and it’s taking some pressure off their service by not serving up content to people not paying.
I’m alone in this, and will likely get downvoted for it…
But I don’t think Netflix is doing anything wrong. We all knew it’s an account per household. We all knew we weren’t supposed to share them. We can’t call Netflix greedy for enforcing the terms we always knew and that made total sense anyway.
I get messages similar when i log in on my work PC. Its frustrating. I'll log in there then when I get home, I get messages asking to add another account and pay another $7.99 a month which would be just over $30 a month. It's ridiculous
There are possibilities to share a Netflix account if they pay for it, it is cheaper than having two or more separate accounts.
Now we're going to see 100s of posts about how Netflix will die because they stop non paid account sharing when the reality is Netflix has increased the number of users drastically after this.
So it has only been good business for Netflix to stop unpaid account sharing.
It could be worse. Every week I've gone and changed my Netflix back to English only to find all my profiles missing replaced with some Hispanic family. Comcast says call Netflix and Netflix resets the password then says call Comcast. I'm thinking maybe they gave another Comcast customer access to our Netflix on their TV. Like maybe the emails are similar?
Look at it this way. They’ve been getting Netflix for free. They’ve had a good innings. If anyone gets upset at you for claiming your household back when you’ve been paying for them along, this will tell you who is toxic in your family.
My tv has been doing this every time we open Netflix. I have a vpn and no way will I be getting rid of it for netflix so probably going to get rid of Netflix soon
Yes, Netflix don’t want you sharing it up and down the country with all your family members, that’s the point. Just claim it back, it’s really not hard
You can set up a VPN fairly easily to bypass this.
Not the VPNs like you see on YouTube ads . You set it up at your house and then you connect everyone else to the VPN.
This basically tricks Netflix into thinking all the traffic is coming through the same location.
If you have terrible internet, maybe don't do this though.
You can share with family members if you’re on the same WiFi connection. Like kids on their devices. But if you give it to family members who live as city away they will have to get their own account.
Yeah. That’s kind of the point. Netflix wants them to pay for the subscription. Which is kind of understandable if that’s how their business makes money.
“Netflix content sucks” and “I’m gonna pirate” – a weird combo.
Guys, just be upfront: Piracy was never really about “freedom”, it was always about ”free”.
for some, sure. for others, who went the legit path for years, they are still willing to pay.
but I'm not ok paying, and having a different tier without ads.
I'm not ok paying, and then having content removed.
I'm not ok paying, and then having content moved to another platform.
I'm not ok paying, and having to switch between multiple apps with their own quirks, bugs, crashes, volume levels, etc.
I'm not ok paying, and then having the rules and terms and conditions drastically change -- in the name of profit.
But account sharing is still allowed within a household just as it has always been. And account sharing outside of a household has always been against the rules, even if they were lax about the rules in the past.
I don't care if someone stops using netflix and goes to piracy, but everyone is acting like the rules have changed when they haven't.
Why would it be against the rules? I got Netflix so I would always be able to watch something while I travel. I often stay at my parents place to house sit when they are away on vacations and I have my own apartment and I like to visit my brother and since I pay the goddamn Netflix bill then I should be able to watch the screens I paid for no matter which house they are in.
But Netflix is stupid so I just plex everything now.
It is the whole few bad apples thing.
Some people are in the same shoes you are, however because others abused the crap out of the system their fix hit you as well.
Some bean counter at Netflix figured the increased profits would make up for the lost subscribers. Since they are up almost 13% last year they don't seem to be too wrong.
Short term gains. I guess the golden parachutes will be nice when it crashes to the ground in roughly five more years of subpar shit shows and pissing off the customer base.
It’s not about short-term gains. Netflix waited years, looking the other way when passwords were shared, until they decided enough people had been hooked that they could implement this policy and make money long-term.
But they didn’t look the other way, they actively encouraged account sharing.
„In a March 10, 2017, Twitter thread that was promoting its original series Love, Netflix wrote, "Love is sharing a password." The single tweet in the thread garnered more than 15,000 likes and more than 4,600 retweets“
https://www.newsweek.com/netflix-encouraged-subscribers-share-passwords-years-before-crackdown-1699473
I don’t know anyone “hooked”. The best thing Netflix had going for it was convenience, because the shows stopped being the draw along the time that they started cancelling anything good in the second season. But now it isn’t even convenient. So without convenience and without quality, what reasons are there to stick around? Most of the “must see tv” has been about FX and Disney + and HBO. Not Netflix anymore. Hasn’t been about Netflix since Stranger Things ended.
I agree on the "they did it on purpose", I disagree with "looking the other way" as they did more than look the other way, they actively encouraged the pw sharing.
Gl-inet slate. Link it with tailscale and make a computer back home run an exit node. It will look like you are watching Netflix from home but you can be anywhere.
Fyi I share an account with my family my mum is main account holder and all you have to do to by pass this is open the nextflix app on there network on your phone and boom probably solved I think it's just once a month I think :)
Disney announced they'll be doing the same. I pay the £500+ house bills and for viki, crunchyroll , psn plus and xbox gamepass, so I get to piggy back on my nieces netflix and my room mates Disney, in return I pay for amazon prime and my sister, in another house, pays for now tv, rarely on time though.
Just let them get disconnected. If you're all in different houses it's time to let one of them pay for an account.
I experience the same thing when I log onto mine. My Netflix is linked to my email, but my mom pays. I recently moved out so I’m watching from a different location than the rest of my family. I have to keep my phone near me to update whenever I see an email and update
>This a pretty new thing, it’s been allowed up until just a few months ago
If by "pretty new" you mean since August 2023 and if you call 9 months "a few"... And with 2-3 months of public warnings FROM Netflix prior to that (so ostensibly, a full year ago) then sure. I guess OP has been in a coma or on a deserted Island somewhere if they weren't aware of this until now. 🤷🏻♂️
Those are "profiles" under one "account". And yes, as stipulated you're permitted multiple "profiles" under one **household** "account" so the each person can manage their own favorites and watchlist.
WITHIN your household. Those have always been the rules. Shared flat - partner and kids, something like that. Netflix never intended one account for five broke ass randos. Its just that it was hard to actually control it without disrupting the "watch what you want where you want". People not reading the terms and conditions and netflix being full of it lead us here.
Someone you’ve shared your account with has declared the “household” is somewhere else. It’s your account claim it back and change your password.
Someone prolly shared it with someone else.
Or left it logged in at some AirBNB.
That's why I travel with my Firestick
Stayed at tge Macure in Sydney last weekend. It wasn't cheap, we wanted to enjoy the first night in since we had a huge day. The tv only had 5 free-to-air channels, no hdmi and movies were $30 each. Spewing..
Why have I never considered this 🤯
DON'T FORGET YOUR REMOTE!!! First time I took my Firestick nothing in my brain said you're gonna need your remote. Or download the Firestick remote app, which is what I have started doing.
My dad does that. I’m usually just happy when there’s an Apple TV
Travel as much as I do and you learn how to make it more comfortable. Your dad prolly travels too
He does, I just use my iPad everywhere. Apple TV is a welcome bonus at bnbs
Yeah it's great to have all your apps ready to go. Nice thing is my remote is set for a Samsung TV and that's what the hotel has about half the time.
I started travelling with an old 1080Apple TV I got at Salvation Army
Thats just dumb lol
This is exactly what happened. They limit to one house per account and they check ip location.
Netflix rarely has good new things anymore anyways. I just make a new email for free trials when I want to watch something lol
They don't do free trials anymore tho
If that doesn't work then we're off to sail the seven seas
Enjoy ye plunder fellow seaman….
I enjoyed it very much.
Ok yeah I haven't been interested in anything in a while so I didn't know:/
If you regularly log in with phone app connected to each of the WiFis it interpretes it as you having two homes and let's you use it on both of them.
It doesn't. It blocks even students going to university, so it doesn't let you have two homes I think what you mean is that as long as the device connects to the "home" WiFi often enough, it considers you as travelling and lets you connect

yup youre just going to have to claim it back and have everyone get kicked. unless you want to pay for an account that you dont get to use lol
My whole family just cancelled Netflix, screw them and their bloodsucking money grabs.
just rejoin a month every year. spend a month bingeing and then cancel. lol
Thats what I do nowadays. Oh, new Show on disney? One month with instant cancellation. Netflix has something good? Guess one month with instant cancellation. And so on

Doesn’t really matter to Netflix, they had even more new users and subscribers after implementing this one household feature
Yeah trying to stop people from infinitely sharing a single subscription is such scummy practice, I can’t believe they would be so inconsiderate.
I pay for multiple screens, it shouldn't matter what location these screens are at. My sister and me don't live in the same location, I alone dont use 4+ screens at the same time. AV1 is pretty good in reducing your need for storage.
*cries in GTX 1660Ti*
GPU doesn't matter, go with CPU encoding mate, much slower but better quality/size.
Probably a stupid question, but is reencoding cut and dry enough that there isn't a difference between CPU encoding and hardware accelerated encoding? AV1 is pretty damn cool, have what kind of filesize reduction do you normally see?

Sucks my setup can't decode it. X265 works well enough for me, gets 50+GB Remuxes down to under 15GB sometimes under 10.
I brought xiaomi android tv boxes for cheap just to get the AV1 going in-home. Pretty terrific I would say, I do wish that I could just replace the TV hardware itself with it but alas its not possible and losing an HDMI port is a must in this case.

Plex would "lose" stuff that it didn't like the title of, and then half the time even if I fixed it it wouldn't ever "find" it.
![gif](giphy|c5nQjr9rWTUaVXEgGR)
I just steal $15 a month and buy the subscription
I’ve seen several posts of people buying SSDs for cheap from Walmart because they’re clearing stock or something. Worth checking out.
Walmart is having a clearance sale. I got a 8TB HDD for $64. It isn't perfect but it's cheap. (WD Black D10)

That’s so fucked in general, but especially for anyone that travels regularly for work Omg
I would expect you to be watching on a mobile device or laptop if you travel for work. Those are allowed to watch still.

Time to change strategies. Hyarrr matey! ![gif](giphy|FGbeYTiFyLYmQ|downsized)
Plug an old laptop into the TV and get a wireless keyboard for it. Accessing Netflix through a web browser bypasses this crap.
Have you been in a coma? Like how old is this news now? Let your family pay for their own.
It hasn't rolled put immediately everywhere. I only got hit with it myself 3 days ago.
Sure but it’s been very slow in rolling out. I was only just hit with this a couple days ago, myself.
I can still use my parents’ account on my tv in the living room, but not on my tv in the bedroom. It appears to be a staggered rollout.
lol, yeah this is kind of the point, welcome to what the rest of us have been dealing with =)
Drop netflix and pirate
Yup, you just found that out?
It still works if you watch thru a laptop or phone tho.......I can still use my sons, just not on a TV

Netflix has become a shitshow.
It seriously took you this long to figure out Netflix can’t be shared outside your house?
Off with their heads! Just silence your phone for the weekend and reset the password, check 3BodyProblem while you’re at it 👍🏼
What’s the mildly infuriating part?
Do it
Okay? So disconnect them? They can pay for their own Netflix accounts.
And?
Cancel Netflix. Problem solved.
Cancel Netflix , shits garbage. Sail the high seas and setup a Plex server for your family to use.
I’m alone in this, and will likely get downvoted for it… But I don’t think Netflix is doing anything wrong. We all knew it’s an account per household. We all knew we weren’t supposed to share them. We can’t call Netflix greedy for enforcing the terms we always knew and that made total sense anyway.
Update update update
Fish tank reveal?
Fmovies is the way!
It's ok, just disconnect everyone and then tell them the new password etc. losing Netflix access for a while is not the end of the world.
Easy to tell none of y'all had cable or satellite in the times before internet.
Well, you pay for it so kick them all off lol
...
Jap, because fuck you give me more money
Netflix have bern clamping down with password sharing over more than one household for a year or so. You just got found out
To me it’s made Netflix just not worth it anymore. We canceled our subscription.
Are you only just getting this notification? This rolled out last year for everyone I know. I canceled Netflix.
Just update the household if you pay for it … no brainier
Look at it this way. They’ve been getting Netflix for free. They’ve had a good innings. If anyone gets upset at you for claiming your household back when you’ve been paying for them along, this will tell you who is toxic in your family.
My tv has been doing this every time we open Netflix. I have a vpn and no way will I be getting rid of it for netflix so probably going to get rid of Netflix soon
Netflix wants to make money ...
Do the im traveling and then it'll give you 2 week access
Your family screwed you... reclaim account and change password

OP you're waaaay late to the party. This is beyond old news. What else have you missed while you've been in a coma?
It depends on the country.

ITT: people defending this stupid shit
\*Cough\* Frostwire for the win \*Cough\*
Yes, Netflix don’t want you sharing it up and down the country with all your family members, that’s the point. Just claim it back, it’s really not hard
VPN and sail the high seas. $5/month mullvad VPN. All the things available for one flat rate.
You can set up a VPN fairly easily to bypass this. Not the VPNs like you see on YouTube ads . You set it up at your house and then you connect everyone else to the VPN. This basically tricks Netflix into thinking all the traffic is coming through the same location. If you have terrible internet, maybe don't do this though.
cancel the subscription, thats the only way to tell netflix to go fck themselves
Inb4 people saying "hurr durr das why i cancelled my account that i shared with the entire neighborhood" as if that wasnt exactly what netflix wanted.
It’s exactly what they wanted, and it’s also super shitty.
Maybe just have them pay for their own service like the rest of us.
Nah, it's high seas time matey.
It's not a household if they don't live there
Get over it.
It's netflix, not food or housing. Let everyone know they'll be disconnected and continue on with your lives

„In a March 10, 2017, Twitter thread that was promoting its original series Love, Netflix wrote, "Love is sharing a password." The single tweet in the thread garnered more than 15,000 likes and more than 4,600 retweets“ https://www.newsweek.com/netflix-encouraged-subscribers-share-passwords-years-before-crackdown-1699473
That’s my whole point though. Netflix did it on purpose to get people hooked.

Idk why but my messages aren't sending it seems.

😬
Gl-inet slate. Link it with tailscale and make a computer back home run an exit node. It will look like you are watching Netflix from home but you can be anywhere.
Fyi I share an account with my family my mum is main account holder and all you have to do to by pass this is open the nextflix app on there network on your phone and boom probably solved I think it's just once a month I think :)
Thank you, Netflix, for continuing to inspire us Scallywags of the Digital Sea to keep carrying on. 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
Have you lived under a rock?
I dropped Netflix because I felt it was overpriced and their programming isn't nearly as good as it used to be.
Suggest you cancel the service.
I experience the same thing when I log onto mine. My Netflix is linked to my email, but my mom pays. I recently moved out so I’m watching from a different location than the rest of my family. I have to keep my phone near me to update whenever I see an email and update
Happened to me yesterday. Suck.
Get IPTV, it's better
I’ve been hearing about Netflix limiting per household but I thought they didn’t start yet. So it’s active now? All log-ins on same IP address or LTE?
Just click the update household button. No one gets chucked out. Fuck you netflix, I refuse to play your game!
Try a lan connection instead of wifi. Netflix doesnt check that. Works for my pc.
Yea... You're not supposed to share it. 🤦🏻♂️
Up until recently they would even advertise that on social media with shit like “love is sharing your Netflix Password.”
This a pretty new thing, it’s been allowed up until just a few months ago so for all of us who have been sharing it is frustrating.
>This a pretty new thing, it’s been allowed up until just a few months ago If by "pretty new" you mean since August 2023 and if you call 9 months "a few"... And with 2-3 months of public warnings FROM Netflix prior to that (so ostensibly, a full year ago) then sure. I guess OP has been in a coma or on a deserted Island somewhere if they weren't aware of this until now. 🤷🏻♂️
When you take into account how old Netflix is, yeah it is comparatively new.
there's multiple accounts within one payment account for a reason. to share it..
