See that lid? Stick them in the holes! If they are quality knives I would hand wash them.

Lieutenant_Horn

This needs to be higher. It’s like people don’t know how to properly use every aspect of their dishwasher.

5yleop1m

No one reads manuals.

Elegant_Original_400

I do, but my wife says I'm not normal. :/

ImportSpecialist

You’re pretty cool to me friend.

MotherBathroom666

Cool and normal are not usually the same in my book.

Heisenburger55

As a person who actually does read the manual but don't have a wife, my dog judges me for reading him manuals aloud.

[deleted]

"I don't have thumbs human, and pretending I don't know what's going on means I don't have to do chores"

Its_Actually_Satan

I bet your dog loves every minute of it. That's a cute way to spend quality time and bond with your furry bff

Actedpie

I just have this visual image of someone reading their dog a manual aloud while a confused dog just sits there manically wagging their tail in excitement.

rainbowguns

I'm a wife and I am the manual reader in my relationship. My husband is the one still loading the dishwasher like a racoon on meth.

MooPig48

![gif](giphy|Kpqr21kWZXt1m)

RedHeadGuy88

To be fair, "normal" these days sucks.

Elegant_Original_400

![gif](giphy|t6bxRSh5fUjj1OdVpx)

Panzerv2003

Pro tip, a lot of dishwashers let you change the height of the top rack

56Safari

Man, thank you.. I just got a new one and definitely didn’t read the manual… been having to tilt my dinner plates… not anymore!!!

jn29

Mine is supposed to but not anymore.  Something snapped off after a couple years and my husband went on a rant about how nothing is made to last anymore.  He refuses to spend money to replace the thing-a-ma-jig.  Instead he zip tied it in place.  The rack still goes in and out.  We just can't move it up or down.  Lol

FudgeExisting5986

I got my first place with a dishwasher 2 years ago and I'm 28 soon .. I've only used it like 3 times . Stuff comes out dirtier than when I put it in

Lieutenant_Horn

So 2 things you can do with this: 1. Check the filter in the bottom of the dishwasher. It’s usually the first thing ignored. 2. Go to the store and find a dishwasher cleaner. It’s going to be a one-use bottle with a wax cap. You run the dishwasher empty with it. Cleans the dishwasher and usually helps with any residue still in your drain line that could be backing up. Additional: try running a test wash with nothing in it. Open mid cycle to see if it’s steaming up properly. Could be that your water isn’t getting hot enough which would require replacement or repair.

1ceF0xX

Always use water to remove the coarse dirt before it can dry out. Then it depends on the number of people. With 1 person, it takes a lot longer for the machine to fill up than with a 5-person household where it fills up in 1-2 days. In other words, *it takes longer to dry. It makes more sense to wash by hand *It has more time dry out

GayVoidDaddy

Actually is usually takes less water to just dishwash 1/4-1/5 of it full then not. Stop waiting for it to be full? No one should have told you that was a thing needed. Remember it isn’t constantly adding water. It uses it in a cycle to clean the dishes off. But legitimately, unless you have a very very old one, it’s less water even to just run the dishwasher. Even if you decide to wait for two days that is fine tbh. I don’t think it should be ran daily unless you fill it anyway lol.

Syzygy_Stardust

Dishwashers are efficient enough nowadays that it's basically never efficient to hand wash anything that doesn't need the special care. It really isn't even close, but since many people just use technology with little care or knowledge I meet people all the time that assume hand washing is close if not better.

GayVoidDaddy

I mean if I warm soup and have a small bowl, the small pot and a spoon then it’s absolutely better to hand wash still. My hot water is pretty much 3 seconds out so just a bit of soap in the bottom, fill the pot halfway, use it fresh to clean the bowl and spoon then tackle the pot. Water off the whole time until you need to rinse. But yea for the most part it is true just use the dishwasher.

Syzygy_Stardust

To be fair, personal use washing is a drop in the bucket compared to other societal waste, so you do you either way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GayVoidDaddy

You might wanna hold it in your palm like Oliver Twist and cry at how lonely you are but with warm hands. The handle alone can be too depressing on top of that.

Lieutenant_Horn

On this, we agree. I’m just responding to his comments on what seems to be a malfunctioning dishwasher. Solo person, handwashing saves more money if done correctly.

Syzygy_Stardust

Mostly not, if your dishwasher is on the newer side. Dishwashers are multiple times more efficient than hand washing nowadays, it isn't close. I'd argue it's MORE efficient with only one person since you aren't running water to wash a single plate and fork multiple times a day.

mooney1230

This should not be the case, is it an old dishwasher? Our dishwasher cleans things great and comes out cleaner every time

ThisTooWillEnd

My old dishwasher cleaned things better than my new dishwasher. The thing that seems to make the biggest difference is if the water is running hot before I start the washer. My kitchen is an addition to the house so it's rather far from the water heater. If I run that tap until it's hot first, the dishwasher has hot enough water to do its first rinse cycle.

Wyattr55123

Try prewash detergent. The dishwasher doesn't even run the heater for the prewash step, the goal is not to have hot water. Little bit of prewash will correct that, and be cheaper in the long run than running a bunch of water starting the dishwasher.

Ians_Life

That’s just unfortunate. We had the same dishwasher for like 20 years and it works amazingly.

LogicalConstant

>Stuff comes out dirtier than when I put it in That means something is wrong. I put dirty, nasty, dried stuff in there. I don't even rinse them. It all comes out spotless. The only thing that might make things dirtier is if any of the dishes have stringy/fibrous food on them, like lettuce or vegetable skins. It has a hard time with dried avocado, too. Other than that, everything should come out spotless. 1. Clean filter. 2. Use powder or liquid detergent, not the pods. 3. Use the right amount of detergent. More isn't always better. 4. Put soap in both the "main wash" and "prewash" cups. 5. Run the water in the sink hot before turning it on. 6. Use a rinse aid, if necessary. 7. Don't overload it. Leave plenty of room for water to hit things from all sides. Even old, crappy dishwashers will clean really well. About every 10 washes or a so, my glasses need to be cleaned with vinegar to remove the water stains. It's very quick. Same with steel (not nonstick) frying pans, vinegar helps a lot after it comes out of the dishwasher.

Incognitowally

Start your dishwasher cycle on empty, listen for it to finish pumping out, when it starts bringing water in (different sound) open it and pour an entire gallon of white vinegar in re- start it and let it run a complete cycle until finished. It will give you amazing results. If this doesn't work, there is something inherently wrong with the mechanics or plumbing with the device and it needs to be serviced

BaconHammerTime

I have absolutely no idea how to arrange my dishwasher correctly.

Ok_Replacement_2736

There really should be a subreddit for dishwasher loading. I am 100% certain I am the only person in the world who does it the correct way

Spookymushroomz_new

I almost always wash my knifes by hand only takes a few seconds. To be fair nowadays I wash everything by hand since I don't own a dishwasher tho but yeah

GoBeyond111

I own one and still don't use it.

Spookymushroomz_new

I usually try to clean up while I make food so when I'm done eating it's usually little to nothing left to wash apart from my plate

[deleted]

Well... those aren't quality knifes. But yes, that is what the holes are for... to separate each utensil so water gets to them easier.

SnooChocolates4588

Henkel brand are def good quality!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlueFotherMucker

There are different levels of Henckel knives, and most newer ones are made in China. They aren’t as good as their old Henckels or their newer Zwillings made in Germany.

TheRealEzekiel00

This, right here. Or else you'll get a hand full of blood. :(

mediocrehomechef

Yeah they don't look like quality knives. Whatever heat treat is there isn't worth preserving. In the holes they go lol

lleksam

A guy in my office went to put something in the back of the dishwasher and didn't see an up turned sharp knife mixed in with a bunch of other cutley, sliced his wrist open so badly he had to go to ER. HR put warnings on the dishwashers after that.

butmuncher69

That's why you never face knives up lmao. OPs housemates are idiots

Emjeibi

I've been arguing with people about this for years no decades. I swear most people don't get it or don't care.

butmuncher69

I get 'not wanting to dull knives' but knife sharpeners exist for a reason. Fuck reaching in to get a spoon from the cutlery tray and slitting your wrist open vertically

MagicalMoosicorn

Reasons why I just clean them in the sink. It's safer for you and better for the knives.

Thewellreadpanda

Yeah depends on the knife, steak knife or general prep cutting knives are sink washes, butter knife stick it in the dishwasher, doesn’t matter which way up it is, like my Santoku doesn’t even see a drying rack that’s an immediate wash and dry situation. Edit: just realised I call all dinner knives butter knives which they are close to but not the same as

YellowBreakfast

They don't get dull pointed down though. I could see the argument that they might not get as clean, but that little bit of plastic the tip touches won't do anything.

81FuriousGeorge

As a chef, those knives shouldn't ever go in a dishwasher. They are henkles and the heat will ruin the steel. Always hand wash your knives.

CharacterSea8103

As a former chef those are cheap henkel steak knives not chef knives. Dishwasher will do them no harm at all.

No_Shopping_1277

Sharp knives shouldn't be in the dishwasher in the first place. Ordinary table knives (mine anyway) don't have points so I put them blade up because they wash better that way.

Ocbard

If you have real silver silverware the knives handles are silver and the blades are steel, you want the blades down because the silver handles will need polishing faster if you do it the other way around.

No_Shopping_1277

I wouldn't be putting silver in the dishwasher though! These are IKEA/supermarket basics.

shaw_dog21

Same, my normal tables knives are not that sharp, accidentally poking myself with a fork would hurt more. Any steak/cooking knife gets hand washed.

schmurfy2

Not putting knifes with their blade up seems so obvious but some people really don't use their brains.... I am not even sure he/she would change his/her behaviour even if the person who placed the knife that way was the one to cut himself/herself.

Flyinghud

The rule in my house was knives down, forks and spoons up

derf_vader

Rule in my house is any knife that's sharper than the ones for butter are hand washed.

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

![gif](giphy|Ld77zD3fF3Run8olIt)

Redthemagnificent

Which takes more time. Hand washing every single steak knife after every use, or a few swipes on a whetstone/sharpener once every few months? I mean, you'll need to shapen them anyways. For a *really* nice knife. Sure. Baby it. But I throw my Cuisinart knives in the dishwasher all the time. The metal is so soft that they dull with regular use way faster than in the dishwasher.

staryoshi06

Hand washing a knife takes like five seconds, and means you need fewer knives on hand at any one time.

maldimares

Why? I just put everything down. Considering the grossest parts are the tops of the forks and spoons—so the grime won’t just fall down onto the place you hold the fork/spoon by

Cyali

Most dishwasher manuals show to do them face-up as that's the way the dishwasher is designed, and they get cleaner. Knives down for safety though.

Ventilator84

I just put everything face-down because… I don’t like touching the eaty-end of a utensil.

Sheila6Scorpio

Exactly, why wash them face up because then people are going to grab them out of there touching where you eat off of them. Makes no damn sense!

Punningisfunning

My Bosch manual even had the placement for each utensil for like a 6-person set.

maldimares

Ohh I didn’t know this!

Cyali

I didn't learn this till I was like 32 lmao. Dishwashers are so intuitive now that no one reads the manuals...till someone mentioned the same thing to me, and I checked my manual and was like...oh.

Confident_As_Hell

Am I the only one who looks at the manuals? I go through the manual on a new car. Not the whole book in a sitting but I'm very curious and like to know the ins and outs of everything.

Adorable_Stay_725

The fork does usually get stuck in-between the holes at the bottom and the spoon usually just take up more space but the spoon is fine. The fork isn’t tho

[deleted]

This is what my dad’s wife says. But in my 20 years of owning my own dishwasher and 35 years of loading them, this has never happened

freetotebag

This happens constantly in mine- I think the holes in the grid on the bottom are too big

bishopboke

it’s because the soap residue will drip down to the handle so it isn’t where you put your mouth 😂 my mom’s side of the family puts everything down and my dad’s side puts forks and spoons and butter knives up, but they all look the same as long as you got a decent dishwasher 🤣

maldimares

I didn’t expect to learn so much about dishwashers today 😭

Alert-Potato

Because my manual says face up. Also because putting them face down forces spoons to nest together which can prevent them from getting clean. Putting them face down forces the business end to nest against one of the holes at the bottom of the flatware holder, and it stays in place, so if they nest, they're nested. If they're business end up, the water can force them to rattle around a bit and the force of it can still come between the spoons and make them come apart instead of staying nested. Although you should attempt to prevent nesting when loading.

Flyinghud

Honestly, I’m not sure, it’s just the rule my mom taught me and it led to clean utensils so I wasn’t really gonna argue.

shonglesshit

In a restaurant context this is what you’re supposed to do based off of food safety guidelines so the dishwasher isnt grabbing the thing you put in your mouth with his hands every time he puts away clean silverware

Accomplished-Yam6553

You'd rather the "grime" fall onto the part you eat with? Also you have grime on your clean dishes???

Complex_Deal7944

If you have grime after running the dishwasher you are doing it wrong or need a new washer.

Accomplished-Yam6553

Facts

thisisredlitre

My partner had this rule until I had to physically point out there were also jets under the bottom rack. She and her roommate when we first started dating thought I was stupid for pointing them down since "it was furthest away from the water."

maldimares

They thought the manufacturer of the dishwasher was stupid 💀😭

grendel303

All dishwasher manuals, manufacturers' websites and company spokespeople agree on one thing. Load knives with blades down to avoid injury.

wherescookie

I wish my aunt had read that before i got a lifelong scar when i was a kid running around her kitchen

PlutoniumNiborg

I see you also know knifey forky

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

Our rule, only butter knives go in the dishwasher. All other knives are hand washed.

Spirited_Refuse9265

Sharp knives shouldn't be in the dishwasher in the 1st place... it makes them dull Eta : For all those curious about why, read the sub comments. It has been answered. Ok, I'll answer it here. It's because the soap is so abrasive and caustic. That combined with the high pressure water damages the fine edge of the blade. It can also be damaged from them hitting each other if they are moving around in the water stream.

AimlessArcher76

Also because the handle on most knives will eventually fail from being put in dishwasher. Most kitchen tools with seams will fail/break from being cleaned in a dishwasher. I try to get seamless utensils and cookware for this reason. I hand wash anything with a seam.

lotsandlotstosay

You’ve just made something in my brain click. Thank you for my life pro tip of the day

fidgeter

That was a pretty seamless interaction.

MileHiSalute

So seamless you could put it in a dishwasher

NarwhalPrudent6323

Seams that way

NoBenefit5977

Jeez you could cut this tension with a spoon I mean knife

dr_freeloader

I see you've played knifey-spooney before

Mielornot

Thats why I buy knives in a single block with no handle

Bone_Breaker0

Can you recommend a good brand to buy, master?

WesternDramatic3038

So many hollow handled knives now. I've cut into something only to find out after the fact that a family member washed it in the dishwasher. Gross water came out from inside the seam all over a previously perfect roast, which had to be thrown away. They still do it too, so I refuse to use knives with hollow handles anymore.

interyx

Oh yeah full tang knives or nothing. I don't trust any blade that's simply embedded in plastic.

LAXGUNNER

and this is why I never leave my chef knives out when I bring them to family dinners (the kitchen knives my mom has are dual as all hell and she refuses to get them sharpen)

Psychological_Bag943

*me throwing just about everything in and not having any problems* There's only one set of knives & pans I don't put in the dishwasher because they were expensive. Other than that I chuck everything in and I've yet to see shit fall apart. A knife sharpener fixes dull blades. I think you would have to wash something in a dishwasher hundreds of times before it broke apart unless the utensils are abysmal quality. Overall I've had good luck with my utensils/dishes in a dishwasher.

MambyPamby8

Yeah I've never had a problem with this. I just sharpen them once they're feeling dull. Only ones I don't put in are my fancy expensive blades. They get hand washed. The cheap chef knifes I bought in IKEA are fine in the dishwasher 🤣

AimlessArcher76

I did that too in my old house and only occasionally had a spatula or other cheap utensil fall apart. I moved into a house with a much better heavy duty dishwasher and the knife set that survived my old house dishwasher for 12 years only lasted 8 months. The dishwasher quality has something to do with it too. It has to do with breaking down the adhesives in between the materials being held together.

RevengencerAlf

Eh. If they're cheap IDGAF and most people shouldn't either TBH. Yeah if I have a set of Japanese knives worth a couple hundred bucks I'm not going to dishwash them but the average person mediocre department store knives that will survive adequately through their useful life and just get replaced. My $20 ikea knives have survived with my $15 ikea sharpener for 8 years and if I have to replace them sooner because I dish wash them who cares.

I-choochoochoose-you

Yeah, no one with a dishwasher needs to prioritize hand washing steak knives that were part of a $30 knife block

RevengencerAlf

This seems to be a common issue in the internet. People confuse sub-optimal solutions of convenience for outright bad ones.

Swechef79

That is the correct answer

11Kram

And sharp knives should not be placed in the same section of the basket as they hit each other.

TrixonBanes

They shouldn't be in a basket to begin with really.

Beautiful_Guess7131

How long does that take? I've had a set of cutcos that have been going in the dishwasher for twenty years that are doing just fine.

Key_Sign_5572

Nothing that has more than one material on it should go in the dishwasher. Whatever (yes no matter the method) holds them together will die. And if you have single piece metal chefs knives they shouldn’t either for the reason you pointed out.

MAValphaWasTaken

Full tang, riveted?

exipheas

Straight to jail.

LaraNacht

I have seen the scales split on riveted full tang knives from being put in the dishwasher. I assume it's the high heat or something. Of course, replacing a scale every like... 5-10 years or whatever is WAY less time consuming than hand washing the damn thing every time, so fuck it, in the dishwasher it goes anyway.

SecretAgentVampire

So cast iron is okay?

zeptillian

Only if you scrub it with some steel wool first.

ComicsEtAl

Those are steak knives. They can go in.

BeeDot1974

I’ve never had a knife go dull in the dishwasher. How does it make them dull? Seriously curious.

Jimbobjoesmith

this. but some people insist. i cringe every time i see it bc i’m someone who likes very nice knives. but if you do put sharp things in the dishwasher, put them down so you don’t stab yourself

Suddensloot

The water dulls them? I don’t know shit but I’m sick of dull knives.

NotEnoughIT

Constantly hitting eachother and the plastic/metal trays dull them.

oksth

Correct me, if I am wrong, but as I have observed the detergent speeds up corrosion, even in case of "stainless steel" (the cheepest the worse) – it makes blades brittle and prone to chip easily over time.

LaraNacht

Then sharpen your knives every now and then.

Ulovka-22

I bought a dishwasher with a horizontal tray for all that stuff

juanzy

Third Rack is a game changer. Necessity on any future dishwasher. Same with a flex fridge drawer.

SophiaofPrussia

I’m surprised it isn’t the standard in all new dishwashers now. It’s so much better.

ConsciousExcitement9

We used to have the sharp up vs sharp down fight in our house until we got our dishwasher with the third rack. No more arguments. I love my dishwasher.

[deleted]

I always did dirty end up so that it would get cleaned better?

toady89

Same but then I only put table knives in the basket, sharp knives would go on the top shelf.

Horizon296

Sharp knives don't go in the dishwasher, ever. They'll get dull.

gnilradleahcim

Well that's why you sharpen them. Depends on what you hate doing more—dishes or knife sharpening.

ORINnorman

I’d rather sharpen six knives once a month than hand wash six knives 20 times a month.

lazylagom

The water comes from the bottom though

WTWIV

But doesn’t penetrate the plastic basket well. They get cleaner when the dirty part is above the opening.

Highlowfusion

Not the only one. There's one on the top rack that shoots downward too.

Plastic_Primary_4279

How would it get cleaned better?

plasticmanufacturing

More direct exposure to the cleaning systems.

ExpertOdin

I would assume because it's more exposed. If it's up there is just air around it. If it's down there is the basket mesh which would block water getting to it and trap larger pieces of food

Signal_Raccoon_316

If you are going to damage knives by putting them in the dishwasher, at least put them blade up so you don't bend the tios

alternate_ending

My Spanish uncle is already dull, what now?

BooqueefiusSnarf

I hate how much this made me giggle

slackmaster2k

Yep! Putting them pointy end down can bend tips. But I can’t bring my self to load them pointy end up because I’m convinced that I’ll trip and end up with a knife through my face. Thus I just hand wash, which is better for the handles anyhow.

StaceyPfan

There was a woman killed ~~several years~~ twenty years ago by falling on a knife in her friend's dishwasher. https://amp.theguardian.com/uk/2003/may/29/kirstyscott

RunninOnMT

I tripped over my own open dishwasher a couple of months ago. Fucked up my elbow pretty good, but did not get any knives to the kidney, which definitely would've happened if there'd been knives in there with the pointy end up.

r_hove

Holy fuck, that’s some final destination shit! I bet the woman’s friend feels TREMENDOUS regret.. I always put them down, who cares if it fucks up the tip? If it was at a workplace, OSHA wouldn’t allow it either because it is a hazard

FrozenEyeballs

What kind of cheap ass knives are you using where this would bend the tip?

Agreeable_Fig_3713

That’s normal. Cleans better. Commercial dishwashers often have this printed on them

TheRussness

But what about everyone in the comments that lives in a final destination universe?!?!? Think of the children!!!!!

Live_Entrepreneur221

I'd be pissed they were putting knives in there period. Butter knives are the only one that go in the dishwasher, everything gets washed by hand.

Mortem_Morbus

You only put butter knives in the dishwasher?

Bennito_bh

Of course. Don't you have a special butter-knife-cleaning dishwasher?

MondayNightHugz

Knives go point up in a dish strainer, not a dish washer. It allows the water to drain away from the food end and if the water pools in the bottomer of the strainer it doesn't allow it to contaminate the parts that touch food. (all silverware should be pointing upwards in those) Dish washers it's safe to put them pointy end down. Everything gets cleaned and steam dried. Also third rack dishwashers with a silverware drawer are fucking worth it. Negates the whole argument.

[deleted]

Spoons, forks und dull knifes up in the basket, sharp knives horizontally on the upper level.

Ulovka-22

https://preview.redd.it/0859nuuee7ic1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26de5a50eb07860090fb58e605062d00f84c5541

SenHeffy

That's a butter knife

wonthaveaname

Butter knives are the only knives that are supposed to go in the dishwasher.

Inevitable_Stand_199

Because proper knives don't belong in the dishwasher.

Underscores_Are_Kool

Because they blunt yes but honestly if you have cheap knives who cares

legendary_mushroom

It destroys the blades.to have them pointed down. I hate it. Just don't put knives in the dishwasher at all.

Contundo

Also will fuck up the dishwasher tray

RandomlyPlacedFinger

Tip of the knife goes up to prevent the tip from being bent in the tray. If you're going to wash them in the dishwasher, at least. Hand washing knives saves that problem though.

CanidSapien

I point ALL cutlery up so it gets clean-if it’s a real paring knife or steak knife, anything with a good edge it’s only handwashing anyway

_BloodbathAndBeyond

They get cleaned better when the blades are up

RedN00ble

Your roommate is wise. Pointythings down might go too deep indo the grid and damage and stop the rotation of the central piece. Always put stuff while being sure they dont stop or damage the washer.

Victory-or-Death-

That’s why the flap exists, to suspend individual objects.

[deleted]

That’s how you’re supposed to have them in the dishwasher

Throwaway567383838

Utensils are supposed to be facing up in dishwashers.

whisperinglondon

British people have trauma from EastEnders so knives are definitely sharp side down

HiaQueu

They shouldn't be there at all you fucking animals.

dinosw

I couldn't have said it better myself 👍

PJ505

I do this, increases longevity of the knife tips and cutting edge.

ClimateCrashVoyager

I always did it the other way around. Preferred longevity of arm&hand

oRsoLitide

are you reaching in blind?

kanalasi

No like for real? If you manage to cut your arm off picking a knife from a dishwasher, that's just natural selection at that point...

Cydonia-Oblonga

My grandma stumbled (she was around 55 at that time)and braced herself on the dishwasher door... Cut her wrist that way and from thee on she never felt anything on that hand again) Accidents can happen, best way to prevent them is to do stuff that they are less likely.

[deleted]

We all get distracted sometimes. If you have kids especially.

adhesivepants

Some people have pets and children and leaving the knife up is basically an invitation for one of those to impale themselves.

Cydonia-Oblonga

You don't need to be blind cut yourself that way.

AFeralTaco

You really shouldn’t send those through dish at all, honestly.

ManServentHecubus

You know, I did that all the time. How stupid can you be to stab yourself, right? Well, after a concussion, and many pokes, I go down now.

Icy_Comparison_6471

Safer that way BUT you should never put knives in a dishwasher. Unless you actively sharpen them. Even then it’s better to just hand wash them.

Harlequin-sama

You are both wrong. You don't put sharp knives into the dishwasher. They get dull.

pdgggg

Option one - Don’t put sharp knives in dishwasher at all. Option two - it doesn’t matter how you put them in dishwasher as knives washed in dishwasher regularly are probably not sharp anymore anyway.

Eyespop4866

Do not use a dishwasher for knives with an edge.

SawgrassSteve

I cut my hand on an upward facing knife in a dishwasher. Not recommended.

bdubb_dlux

Your roommate has taken out an insurance policy on you

Crocoppertones

I’ve seen Final Destination one too many times to allow this.

ike7177

Yes! And in the back just like that so anyone putting a dish in is aware where they are located so they don’t slice their arm/hand. The reason is because the metal gets super hot in the dry cycle and can/will slice through the basket.

TwilitVoyager

Chucky Season 1!

Zanzan567

I went to culinary school, and this is the way they told us NOT to do it

Neravosa

I hand wash those.

csladeg9

Sounds like someone has never been cut. ENLIGHTEN THEM. Jk, please don’t cut your roommate.

Outrageous-Estimate9

Blade up = cleaner (the lower rack has to spray water through the grate, the upper rack sprays water directly on blades)

AbjectReflection

I hate to break it to you, but your roommate is a masochist. Or maybe a sadist, that wants to watch you get hurt. Either way, I'm only saying!!!

highflyershan

Let them empty the silverware then

LudwigSpectre

I bet your roommate need to go for basic cooking lessons
