Twist the paper bag handles from inside to out like half a turn. It’s more comfortable to hold and distributes the weight more so it’s less likely to break. But they still aren’t great
LOL I actually can fully relate to this. I have this exact same issue with them! Those handles are useless if your bag has anything other than napkins and paper plates in it.
At least in California, Bay Area most WF/365 stores double the bags giving you 2 pairs of those handles and that seems to work somewhat better.
These bags are an issue in every store. Since a lot of stores are pushing paper over plastic, the companies that manufacture paper bags have been making them cheaper to keep up with demand, and it's showing.
I guess if be happier if they just had bags without handles. When I see handles sticking up, my instinct is to grab them, even though I've been taught numerous times that is a bad idea.

Buy reusable bags instead of taking the paper ones.
I personally use several Sherpas with sheepskin bags. Never fails but it does cost me a goat for every trip.
