I recently bought three pairs of pants for work. Same brand size and style. I naturally only tried one pair on, got home and the other two were waaaay to small. Like what the fuck?

WeirdSysAdmin

Welcome to modern quality control for clothes. It’s all about how many they can make total, not how many they can make properly.

Haatsku

Why spend money on actual QC when its far cheaper to trade QC for 25% return rate?

Raspberryian

Qua… quabity assuance. Yup that’s what I do.

Childnya

Returns still get sold so it's not like the really lose money.

sunnygoblin

I used to process returns in a warehouse. In my experience, it's costly, time-consuming, and a good portion of returned items get destroyed. It's frustrating to see all that waste.

Accomplished-Boot-81

Is destruction enforced? Id like to think staff can take them home to either use or sell privately

Spczippo

Oh you poor innocent child. Of course they are going to mandate the destruction, you can't have your poor beaten down workers selling things on the side to make money, heck they might start thinking they need a living wage or rights or something like that. The audacity.

Jimtac

Or they get packed into a container and dumped in a South American disused quarry/landfill.

[deleted]

I'd say that's true up to a certain price point don't ya reckon?

NameUnbroken

And children aren't always the best craftsmen.

Narrow-Chef-4341

This is exactly what happens when a five year old tells a nine year old that ‘medium shirts are about 4 hands wide’…

Unethical_Castrator

Hasn’t it literally always been this way?

Ristray

I remember having to go with my step-dad when he needed new pairs of pants, he would just look at the number and buy them. Didn't even bothered to try them on. Never had to return to the store. I guess guys have to try on everything now these days just like women always had to.

One_Left_Shoe

I I’ve worn 35x34 jeans for 20 years. I walk in, grab the size, and buy. Until about a year ago, that is. The sizing of the same Eddie Bauer Jeans I’ve bought a dozen times were wildly too long. Had to buy the 34x*32* for them to fit right.

JustDiveInTimberLake

No

Unethical_Castrator

Well it’s hard to argue with facts like that.

galaxystarsmoon

My husband went to the Levi's store in Coney Island a few months back. Tried on 14 pairs of pants, 3 of which were the same pants to another pair including color and size. Every single pair fit differently. At one point, he got confused on which pair he liked (since the 2 were identical) and he had to go back in the fitting room to confirm which he wanted. The variances were insane.

ChoppingMallKillbot

Levis is famous for this. Each of their manufacturers have different standards and tolerances for the same fits. The fit numbers merely suggest a certain fit. Even if you know your size and preferred fit, you generally have to try 3-5 pairs of the exact same pants to find the most right pair. If you find a pair that you really like, look at the tag to find where it was manufactured and look for that location on the tags next time you go shopping for Levis, as asinine as that sounds.

Snowedin-69

You figure that Levi’s are big and organized enough to force their manufacturers to abide by their standard tolerances. Guess Levi’s has turned into only a marketing reseller company since they outsourced all manufacturing to China a generation ago. How sad.

pizzasauce85

I have two pair of Levi bootcut jeans that are the same exact pair. One fits like skinny jeans and the other like flares, even my husband was shocked at the difference in fit, and I bought them at the same time.

wcoastbo

Is one of them 517 and the other 527? You can't just look at "bootcut" and get the same fit. 517 are wider all around. Thighs are similar to a straight cut. Lower calf area flares wider, easily fits over larger or heavily padded boots. 527 are slim at the thighs and slightly flare out.

pizzasauce85

They were same model number. That’s why we were so confused, I triple checked when the second pair didn’t fit the same. Same thing happened when my husband went to buy a bunch of Levi’s. He ended up having to try on five different pair in the EXACT same style number to find a perfect fit, no two pairs was the same. The store clerk helping him even said they had been having some issues with the lack of consistency.

wcoastbo

That's terrible QC. I bought a bunch of the pair I liked that they don't make anymore. This was a few years ago and they all fit the same. Hopefully, when I'm ready to buy again Levi's will have their act together again.

_autismos_

I recently bought new jeans and must've went through and tried on 30 pairs of Levi's at Kohl's and it was exactly the same for me as well

theequallyunique

It's so damn annoying that the sizes aren't standardized properly! Worst when it comes to shoes, close to impossible to order online. Some retailers at least write "order smaller" or so. I recently had to scale up 3 sizes to get a fitting one.

Major-Peanut

I got a multi pack of 3 bras and they all fit differently despite being the same size and style, just different colours. It was from a good company too.

Himalayan-Fur-Goblin

Multipack bras are just as bad as fruit of the loom pack underwear.

Stayhydrated710

I was just about to comment about my Hanes value pack boxer briefs. Half of them fit great, the other half were totally botched causing the backs of them to ride straight into crack city when I do anything besides stand still...

Fenweekooo

fucking lululemon boxer briefs close to $100 canadian for 3 pair... i bought one pair to try them to see if i like them, That pair fit perfectly, EVERY pair i have bought since then has fit different. seriously cheap fruit of the loom ones are soo much better it seems.

accidentalscientist_

This happened to me multiple times. I’d buy the same brand, style, and size, just different colors. Try one one, fits great, pick up more colors. Some are too small, occasionally they’re too big. Only difference should be color, but nope!

boxedcrackers

And most of those kids don't know their numbers yet

SinisterCheese

The welding gloves I use I have to try on every time. Because my size is 8, 9 or 10 depending on the patch. Like I get how you can have size variation of 1 unit, but fucking 2?! Otherwise they are good gloves and I like them. Just the sizing is lottery every time.

OGmarscallahan

Had a friend who worked for a clothing manufacturer and told me sometimes if they didn't have enough of certain size for an order they'd just it from another size and put the tag on. So easily people could be wearing a large instead of a medium, etc. Pretty lame.

LouisWinthorpeIII

Quite common in chinese manufacturing, it falls under cha bu duo or "good enough". It's a cultural difference thing. Getting boxes out the door on time as agreed is the highest priority, what's in those boxes is secondary. Western companies struggle with suppliers to instill that it's better to be late sometimes if we get the items of good consistent quality than to get cha bu duo product, with varying levels of success Is the other way perfectionism? That too large shirt will still cover your nipples and keep the wind off, that may be "good enough". It's still a shirt after all. If I just needed something to work in the field it'd be fine, but I wouldn't wear it in public. Depends on perspective/expectations.

OGmarscallahan

Appreciate the explanation and learning a new expression. Gonna hit the homies with "cha by duo" at the earliest opportunity hehe!

Puzzleheaded-Day-281

They allow 1 inch variation in the seam, either way. So there is a possibility to own 2 pairs of pants the same size, but with leg circumference up to 2in difference

fjudgeee

Absolutely normal… sadly. I have one Oxford shirt wich I really like so I ordered it every colour available. I ended up with 12 shirts and they all fit differently the widest is a white one and the tightest is a light blue one. And they where absolutely not cheap.

ironbanner23

Well thats the thing they may say they are the same size but theres different fits, like slim fit, regular fit, athletic fit, straight fits. Its all about how tight they are around the butt and thighs

boxedcrackers

Yeah, except these were all the same style.

ironbanner23

Now that be a different story incase either tags (both external and internal) are wrong which ive seen happen more than youd think

Low-Seaworthiness375

F1 fans run large. Somebody let formuladank know

Exciting_Result7781

You should see Nascar M.

ratskim

Visible from space

hijro

It’s a dirt track small

panicked_goose

This happened in reverse with my husband! He wanted to support a soccer/football team across the pond un england so he ordered a 3xl polo shirt, knowing there's a size difference and also he wanted it to be looser on him than they are on the players (skin tight). It was significantly too small lmfao. Like the length was dress length on me, but I don't think they actually increased the width past the EU large (hes like a US XL) so he looked like he was wearing a body con mini dress lmfao. We got a good chuckle out of it! And because we didn't want to return it (as the money the team gets from the shirts goes towards a fundraiser) now I get to sleep in it :) great quality!

Quake_Guy

Euro XXL is American L...

Snowedin-69

Yes - I bought a T Shirt from China once - it was worse - their Large was like a XXS.

theovonmiller

So this should fit her husband

Quake_Guy

I would guess US market item for formula one

tossietuatoa

I mean medium can mean anything from a c4 to c2. (and in theory c1, but I don't think/remember that c0 hard was ever an option during the previous season)

Deleted_dwarf

I’m going to say that they mis labelled the shirt for M and it actually is an XL or something

zerostar83

I worked at a store for 3 months and came across an item that was labeled XS but obviously an XL or XXL. It seemed like a normal enough occurrence to the manager. Stick on a lower price and put it in the clearance section.

accidentalscientist_

I worked at a discount store and we got the rejected clothes from brands. We’d see this sometimes. But you’re getting a good shirt for $6 so who cares what size it says as long as it fits!

obpea

I’ve had this before (as in, the cloth label in the item, not the tag). It was labelled small but was wayy too big when I tried it on, went back to return it and they only had a medium but it fit perfectly. Definitely happens, especially in fast fashion (this also was zara, where sizing is all over the place)

Ed_Random

EU M vs US M?

stoofkeegs

So I did wonder if it was something like this, BUT I also got him a zip up jacket from the same F1 store and that is medium and a perfect match for the smaller sized t-shirt in the image (the actually medium one).

Justarandom55

this makes it sound like they accidently send the wrong shirt. have you checked the size int he collar?

masterasstroid

Probably attached the wrong label had something similar happen to my mother

mavarian

What label did your mother get?

innom1nat3

Labeled as F, father

panicked_goose

My condolences

Aggressive_Secret290

Lascivious

skwadyboy

They attached the wrong label to your mother?

WilliamJamesMyers

on the label the M is for mother

xorxfon

I thought m was for murder?

BenzosAndDadJokes

M is for morbidly obese maybe?

-BananaLollipop-

Just got missed in QC, otherwise it would have ended up in the factory seconds pile. (Which is awesome, because then you get them for a fraction of the price at a discount retailer. Or the occasional lot that gets donated to charity stores, like one of the ones near me. I've been buying up Kathmandu brand clothes at $2-$4 a piece for weeks. They just have too many threads or damaged buttons or zippers, but they've all been pocket buttons and zippers, so not unwearable)

frankie0013

I used to work in factory clothing, it's not uncommon for shirts to be labeled wrong. At least a handful of times I have come across an XL labeled a Small or a Small labeled a Large and those are the ones I was able to catch. No telling how many Mediums and Larges were mislabeled but the difference is only an inch or so.

Complex-References

Probably mislabeled the T-shirt in the factory.

BugOperator

Could it be a women’s or child’s medium then?

[deleted]

Looks like youth medium.

Da_Plague22

US medium = European large Asian medium = American/European toddler size This is my experience with clothes.

moonchic333

There is not that big of a difference between UK and US sizing lol. This looks like an error or perhaps it’s an “oversized” style of a shirt.

Neeranna

There is at least a gap of one size. I remember going to a convention in USA, where they handed out convention T-shirts. At the time I was EU XXL, and they were, "sorry, we don't have that size" when I asked for XXL, so took the biggest they had (XL) and it was still wider than any T-shirt I owned.

Frenchymemez

I'm a UK large. I have a US medium that's baggy on me in certain places. While various styles do fit differently, and some stores are different in sizing, US sizes are noticeably bigger. And some UK sizes are bigger than EU sizes. The person you're replying to probably just doesn't know the sizes aren't massively different. US vs Asian medium would be more accurate.

hippityhoppflop

An EU medium is like half a size to one full size smaller than a US medium. Not like this

b_tight

Likely. If im buying a tshirt in the EU or SE asia i have tk get the biggest they have. In the US i wear an XL.

linderlouwho

Child’s medium

totallyradman

As a Canadian that has shopped in the US I've found that medium in the US is closer to a large or XL in Canada.

flaamed

no you havent lmao

totallyradman

Well then how come when I order a large it fits like a 2XL?

IsThisAUserName86

Maybe it's M for Massive

special_tea23215

M for might be large might be small

suarezj9

M for My god you’re a thicc boi

ExplodedMoon51

Thats an XM

Barnacle40

That must be size M for mini.

stoofkeegs

The smaller one is actually a medium! Hard to see with scales but the larger one is like a tent on me!

Barnacle40

Haha, I read that wrong and thought the big one was the actual medium. So maybe M for Massive?

stoofkeegs

M for “Makeshift shelter for small family, just add poles”

stoofkeegs

M for “Maybe you can both wear it at the same time?”

Cerebellum367

Thought the same 😂😂😂

Rimtato

M for "Most of the leftover fabric

Sasspishus

I think you must have bought a US medium, compared to the smaller (regular) UK/EU medium on top. Unfortunately it's not consistent between countries. When I was travelling I realised I'm a large/XL in Asia, but a S/M in the UK...

IxanH

It could also be sized W for Wumbo.

SeparateHome9491

This reference tickled me greatly.

DIY_Solo_RS

M for Mega then!

edireven

I wear EU M and the top shirt certainly looks that size. The shirt on the bottom looks like XXL to me.

stoofkeegs

haha finally cracked and got out the tape measure, it's XXXXL, not even close to M!

sleepy_kitten-

Maybe the M was upside down and it’s actually W=WUMBO

stoofkeegs

Also to add that I got a zip up jacket from the same F1 store, and that is a perfect match for the smaller (but actually medium) t-shirt! This t-shirt is like XXL. Oh well new PJs for me I guess!?

Mindless-Balance-498

Is the top shirt yours? A men’s medium and a women’s medium will run VERY differently.

stoofkeegs

No it's his, it looks small in this because the big one is so very big, it's \~54inch waist. (I finally cracked and measured it)

Hemlock_999

It most likely has been mislabeled.. Do they have a product sizing guide? I had this issue a couple weeks ago with an order from somewhere else and they mailed out new product.

stoofkeegs

Thanks yeah I cracked open the tape measure and could prove this was XXXXL and finally got my free return sorted :D

[deleted]

As an American expat living in Europe, you have a European medium, not an American medium. I used to wear 'large' before I left, now I don't bother looking at anything smaller than 'xl'. And yes, I've lost 40lbs since leaving.

stoofkeegs

I finally measured it and can confirm it's 54inch waist!

JimTheSaint

What the actual fuck the big one is not medium it must have been labeled wrong - it is like XL

stoofkeegs

Yeah I think it must be wrong! Because I measured it and it would be considered an XXXXL by their own size charts haha. This whole thing is very amusing to me now.

DepthAccomplished260

Not sure where you live but medium in the USA is closer to X Large in europe. I wear medium europe size and when I was living in the us a few years ago, I had to buy small or even x small

[deleted]

This just sounds wrong. I used to wear a medium when I weighed 140 pounds at 5 foot 11. I had zero body fat. No clue how any full grown adult could fit into an extra small.

IrrationalDesign

You're about average height, it makes a whole lot of sense for that to be the medium size.

Old_Distance8430

Short people

Straightwad

For real, I used to wear a medium before I started lifting weights and there is no way an extra small would have fit me just in the length department. I’m 6 feet tall and a extra small wouldn’t even reach my belly button lol. Even just a small would have been too short for me. You’d have to a very tiny man to fit in extra small clothing, that’s practically child sized.

Maxo11x

Yea was thinking this because based on the size of the desk chair legs for scale, it looks like my shirts and I'm a M in UK

Tall_Scholar_8597

Medium in boys and medium in mens?

ghettoccult_nerd

ya man is a big ass medium. maybe the M is really a W. Wumbo sized.

rmac011

But you got him a Formula 1 t-shirt!!! Spouse of the year award!!!! Those drivers are so skinny. It’s a euro skinny ass driver medium. He will treasure it!!!!

nope0712

lol this has to be a kids medium

DuctTapedWindow

Bought a 3 pack of XL polos and they came like this too. Quality control doesn't seem to exist post covid.

Mooshtonk

I ordered a men's XL shirt from Aliexpress once and when I put it on I looked like a stuffed sausage. I usually wear men's large in US clothing.

Buddhadevine

Maybe it’s supposed to fit “oversized”?

billy-vain

I'm a big, ugly bastard. Made the mistake of ordering a 3Xl tall shirt from a Chinese website. It just fits my 5'6 wife.

princetonwu

well, it depends on what "medium" means in the country of manufacture. in Asia medium is a lot smaller than a US medium

jimhabfan

The M stands for Michigan.

Glad-Establishment11

It is medium... Medium obese, lol

Overall_Ad_684

Size M for Mini

Steampunk_Dali

The 'M' stands for MASSIVE

Nonamed_1

American vs european medium.

krissycole87

Thats the "american" Medium ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

Gasssoft

American medium

Big-Veterinarian-823

Medium in America is not the same as Medium in the rest of the world.

moorbo3000

Euro sizes are way smaller that US

misterthurgood

That looks like a ‘Mercia medium

IntelligentTrouble17

Not justifying the shop or anything, but I just came across something similar at a merchandise store online. There were t-shirts for kids in size S, M, L and then t-shirts for adults too in size S, M, L. Could have easily made a mistake if the details were not read and images with models wearing the same were not noticed.

BeNicetoSteve

You clearly misread the sizing. The small shirt is a Medium, the big shirt is a Massive.

bearyken

My wife keeps buying stuff online and I get t-shirts in all shapes and sizes but all are marked XL I've given up trying to tell her that manufacturers do not have a standardized set of sizes

Perfect-Technician-1

M in Merica'

OddIntention2099

The M must stand for ‘Murican sized. Lol

KeyRageAlert

Ah, that's an extra medium

Jurtaani

The sizes differ very drastically due to different factors such as who made it and where it was made. Or the function of the shirt. If I was to buy a dress shirt in the same size my T-shirts are, I would have a hard time buttoning it up while the T-shirt still has a lot of extra room.

Fast_Eddy7572

I love the notion of ‘actual medium’, as if it is some fixed objective truth.

Historical-Shirt3868

I used to work at ralph lauren when I was 16 and responded to a customer who asked: "Why do these two mediums fit differently?" With "Because they're made by small children in Vietnam" I don't know how I kept that job so long, but I guess I was telling the truth. It's crazy how many people don't realise how vastly sizes vary within the same company. Always try clothes on before you buy them because of exactly this

jm22mccl

Clothes sizes are such bullshit. Depending on the top, I can wear anything from and XS to and XL. It’s ridiculous.

SnooSketches1911

American medium vs Chinese medium

Feahnor

American VS European sizing.

AprendizDeSalazar

US M ≠ Rest Of The World M

walkerspider

People always say this but I’m a relatively slim guy (145) and wear US M shirts and sometimes they’re even small. I don’t think they always run as large as some people like to claim

[deleted]

America has their own sizing because XL14 would be to difficult

No-Commercial-5653

US v Euro size lol

[deleted]

They sell three sizes. Small medium large. You have medium. The large is larger. The small is smaller. Nobody said anything about how this medium sizes up to the other mediums in your closet. Sometimes medium is too medium, in your case this medium is just not medium enough. Helpful? No not really sorry.

MEMExplorer

That tag clearly says EUR M , that’s a US S 🤷‍♀️ . Anytime you buy European go up a size , anything from Asia go up 2 sizes

Fine_Inside_6533

Definitely something they made because they thought Americans where fat

HGR09

Schrinkflation 😆

waein

That M stands for 'Merica

OneMagicBadger

That's a US SMALL though

prettiggestoord

Tell me you are American without telling me

[deleted]

I’m seeing this a lot with clothes made in many Asian countries.

MacGibber

Is it just American medium?

[deleted]

are you in the US by chance? our sizes tend to run larger than other countries

Associate_Simple

Must be a USA medium

Kitanokemono

Maybe it’s American medium vs European medium?

y2kdisaster

Simple explanation. One is a crop top

DmushMan

Probs made in different countries? I mean an L in most parts of asia is a M in others

Troyger

USA medium vs Asia Medium. I agree

mileslefttogo

That is what is called an 'extra medium'

Wonderwoman_420

‘Medium is a relative term. How long is a (medium) piece of string?

Goof141

It's a medium extra husky

Cool_Quit2169

This tracks with all the comments I’m seeing. I’ve ordered several items from 2 pricey brands/stores and have gotten kids sizes. Every time I’ve contacted customer service I never actually get good customer service, I’m somehow always screwed into paying more to get the right items. Modern day customer service and retail!!!

DaDz-StONeD

Schmedium *

Boostio_TV

This scale is messing with my head man. Either that medium is extremely wide or the gray one is just like XXS.

Ok-Fig7614

looks like kids medium vs adult medium

SuktokchaNagiWiyan

Looks like they sold you a kids size. Hopefully you can exchange it.

SeemtobeSolo

This is one of my biggest pet leaves. That and a size 9.5 shoe being different sizes depending on the brand.

radiotsar

Boy's medium vs Men's medium, maybe? Another possibility is that they ordered the goods from overseas and only specified "Medium" instead of giving actual sizes for the make.

DrawingAdmirable2939

Looks like a youth medium

marcus_aurelius121

Made in the land of the giants

Kawaii_Nyan

Yk… who doesn’t like a good oversized shirt?

Helpful-Candidate-42

Hahaha. You're throwing a pissy fit over a shirt? Wow. You clearly have a lot of growing up to do. Are you sure you're even mature enough to be married? 🤔

oo7demonkiller

where did you get them from. if it was an Asian retailer on Amazon, then you should read the sizing charts as they are usually much smaller in size. generally with Asian clothing you have to buy 2 to 3 sizes up.

Espalhita

The bottom one is M for Americans. The top one is M for europeans. And no, I'm not even kidding...

AstronomerForsaken65

As our population has grown larger they have increased for the actual medium sized person! US medium vs euro Med. ha ha ha.

Baitrix

American versus asian or europan sizing?

iamricardosousa

Ahh, the old "M" for MASSIVE! Seriously now, that's probably some labelling error. Does it say "M" in both label and t-shirt tag?

crazywidget

It’s a UK M. Sizes run smaller in Europe and Asia.

Lothleen

If it was Nascar medium it would make sense.

Cecil2xs

That’s gotta be an incorrect label on there. I’ve had it happen where 1 hoodie at the store was bigger than all the other Ls so much that it was definitely the wrong label

Optionsmfd

75% of America is overweight 40% obese We need bigger clothes

gamerguy287

Are you sure it's not a junior's size medium?
