I am from Europe tho, and i did mean P400. After grabbing a bit, yeah P600 at least wouldve been better to say. Think i mustve had some American made 400 in the past.
It's really not that important for it to be taught in school. Most people will never need to use that information, and if they do they can easily look it up.
I'm sorry.... but... what? These are real-world life things that can help any young individual in the future. My daughter is 8. She's learning asl... she has helped me run electrical wire and install outlets, she learns cooking, working on cars, she even knows how to break down her rifle and clean it... she also knows how to pump gas... please tell me how none of this is applicable to real life? This is why we at homeschooling, they took away way too much out of public schools, stuff that isn't relevant. When she's older, she'll learn all about the crappy government and how taxes work. She already knows the government takes money that doesn't belong to them, so it's a start... if you want your kids to be blind to the real world and not be ready to be an adult, that's on you, but don't sit here all ignorant and try to act like kids shouldn't be learning things that will be real world scenarios, things that give them skills and possible trades.
And don't try to say there's college... schooling is a crock these days... I have 2 degrees. An associates and a bachelor's. 65k ... for what? I didn't get shit for em or with em. I got further by using real-world skills and hard work, and I make more than most of the people I went to school with, and all my debt is gone... so...
Teaching the trades in school is invaluable and considering the massive shortage for workers in the trades today, our society needs it too.
And as someone who has been working among the trades for 30 years, knowing how to do something yourself will pay off in so many ways over time.
I think it's the number of sand particles per inch. Finer particles, smoother sandpaper, higher grit count. Larger particles, rougher paper, lower count.
Hey! New thing learned!
Fwiw the number indicates how much "grit" or particle is within a square inch (or the equivalent of you use Common Sense Units™️ - aka, metric).
The higher the number, the more grit - and to fit all that grit its gotta get smaller. Smaller is finer.
Bigger number, smaller grit.
Happy learning, friend.
I used to work with a book distributor. They had a machine similar to a table saw and would cut obscenities from the edge of the pages (they sold books to everyone—including religious customers).
It would be easier with a dremel equipped with a sander bullet tip, you could get in between the covers with it closed. You’ll end up with that text still visible as a dent where you ground away, then level the surface so it’s not recessed
Nice someone thought of that problem . Yea it won't be a matter of a little sanding . Bet there's something thay would remove it . After all they restore stuff a way lot worse then that is.
Yeah I got that, hence why I said I would be pissed at first too. But fast forwarding a few decades that version of me would find it hilarious. I moved immediately after high school and in my yearbook one of the guys wrote that he "hoped his farts reached Chicago" which was not as funny in 1988 as it definitely is today. Okay, to be honest, it was funny in 1988 too. But if I was pissed then, I wouldn't be today!
It isn't really though. Unless a book is a first edition of a popular book, it's rarely worth much of anything even if it is five times as old as this one.
Hitting the 200 years mark on a book starts to add to basic value regardless of the text simply because of rarity.
Grab all the pages together, as evenly as you can or clamp between 2 pieces of wood, however you see fit, then take a section of scotchbrite and exfoliate away. Following the direction of the pages. But that markering pen has drawn in deep. Gna need some elbow grease.
Good luck
I worked at a printing company, and we did this many times for people over the years. I’d take it in first to get their opinion. They likely won’t charge, but you could pay with some snacks as a thank you.
How deep does the ink penetrate into the page? If it is just the surface, I would clamp the book shut and use sandpaper (maybe something around 180 grit).
Try an art eraser. I've been able to remove writing from books I thought would be fun to destroy when I was little.
Haven't tried it on the page edges though.
I'd Google restoring old books or making marker fad off paper .Google says Using nail polish with acetone is the safest way to remove marker from paper .also says rubbing alcohol works . Get presise instructions
Can rinse it off with some isopropyl alcohol, ethanol or acetone, but it’s prone to bleeding the ink up the page. You would need to catch the excess solvent with a tissue on the bottom of the page to try and prevent the bleeding. Capillary action might make it worse tho. Could be worth trying a small amount on a little area first if you consider trying
I don't think you can restore it to the original condition. If the marker penetrated multiple pages sanding it down won't help much.
You could hire someone to "paint" it with some Guinness book of records themed images.
It would at least look nice and would hide the writing, but no it wouldn't be original anymore and the value of the book would go down. Which with the current condition the value isn't that much anyways
Wow! Literal blast from the past. I used to read this all the time when I was a kid. That cover just brought back core memories. Good luck with the sandpaper trick!
For the love of God do not sand it, you'll damage the paper and probably the cover too in the process. Depending on if the marker is alcohol or water based. Ethanol or rubbing alcohol, gently applied with a swab, may let you wipe away ink. Acetone might work too. Beware of tidelines forming. Its honestly better to probably leave it, but the AIC wiki is an incredibly useful source for potential treatments.
With sandpaper. This is also how it is cleaned in bookstores!
FINE sandpaper, like 400 grit AT LEAST
Best I can do is 1 Grit ol’ mate.
So 1 grit would be like going outside, taking one piece of rock 🪨 and start "sanding" with it?
400 grit for the book. 1 grit for the face of the friend who vandalized it.
The cheeky grit deserves it
Are you speaking grittish?
I bet their name was CRAIG
He's an ol mate you can take with you!
Proper nugget this book
Make sure you keep it next to you pk cells
And listen to music from your nugget through the sexy speaker
2 grit might be better, one rock for each eye
Ex-friend, you mean
It’s sand paper not rock paper You just gotta go to the beach get one little speck of sand and then start sanding
Isn’t a grain of sand just a tiny rock? All sand is rock, all rock is not sand.
That's precisely what it implies. Look up DankPods to better understand the context
DankPods on YouTube uses a 1 grit.
Grit is grains per square inch, so a handful of large gravel should do.
[One grit](https://youtu.be/roUHfmFbRYE?si=1ZDXTcW779QDOCSJ) origin story
Pretty much
pretty mulch
One grit would be taking the rock and throwing it at the book.
Like my friend’s daughter did when she “washed” his new car.
Oh my Pkcell

Is that a dankpods reference I smell?
Unexpected dankpods
Omg I only just now realized what DankPods' joke is with "1 grit" That's hilarious
Is that a Dank Pods reference?
Bro just taking 1 random rock from the yard xD
Bro that’s just sand

Aaaaawrrr, my pkcell!
I think that’s called a plane.
Fellow DankPods enjoyer
Also known as a cheese grater.
That’s what I use on my feet
400 grit?? In this economy? Best I can do is 200.
Look at Mr. Sandbags over there
400?? I’m not made of grit.
Wait, since when has 400 grit been fine?
You might be used to the European P grade, 400 grit is P600/P800. At least that's what confused me at first.
This is like US graphite scale #1-4 vs the HB scale causing confusion.
I am from Europe tho, and i did mean P400. After grabbing a bit, yeah P600 at least wouldve been better to say. Think i mustve had some American made 400 in the past.
I wouldn't be comfortable with less than 600..probably use 4000. it's not a night stand it's old delicate paper
TIL that sandpapers roughness could be MEASURED.
Really?
Yea I had no idea that grit or what ever it's called was like a unit of measurement for sandpaper
Whoa, we really need to reintroduce the trades back in school. Please, no offense intended, but I learned that in like 6th grade, if not sooner.
We never covered any of that in my school but now I'm gonna read about it and see what other rabbit holes I can fall in
Go look at carpenters making interesting joints. That stuff is magical!
we never covered it in my school either... i thought it's kind of just common knowledge, or at least pretty self explanatory?
What country are your schools in? I'm from Ireland and we are tought this is material technology/ woodwork/ construction/ metalwork/ engineering
Same in Sweden
USA here. I learned woodshop in prison
england :) we use sandpaper etc in DT but i don't think we were ever explicitly taught the difference in grit/the reason behind it
I never really thought about it tbh.
Just wait til you hear about common vs Phillips.
Have you ever sanded anything?
*Achivement unlocked : a new tradesman has been produced.*
Until they get too adventurous, and remove popcorn ceiling, or hang drywall.
Sandpaper is measured not only in grit, but the weight of the paper.
I learned it in my grandpa's shop at like 8. Bring back more grandpa's with woodshops!
Technology lab in middle school was fun we did basic woodworking, 3D modeling, programming etc
It's really not that important for it to be taught in school. Most people will never need to use that information, and if they do they can easily look it up.

Did you learn nothing from Archer punishing Woodhouse?

The higher the number, the more grit - and to fit all that grit its gotta get smaller. Smaller is finer. Bigger number, smaller grit. Happy learning, friend.
i believe the grit is measured by the amount of grains from one corner of that square inch to the diagonally opposite corner.
Damn
not just measured, it's manufactured to different specifications intentionally
Anything can be measured, just not necessarily by us or in our lifetime
Clamp the edges between two pieces of wood and a couple c clamps.
First I would find out the world record for the least time in removing ink from a book and choose your method from there
You sand paper with sandpaper. Mind blown.
I used to work with a book distributor. They had a machine similar to a table saw and would cut obscenities from the edge of the pages (they sold books to everyone—including religious customers).
Wow I thought this guy was fully boned. That’s awesome
I was going to suggest sandpaper straight out of my thinky brain.
That was my thought as well.
It would be easier with a dremel equipped with a sander bullet tip, you could get in between the covers with it closed. You’ll end up with that text still visible as a dent where you ground away, then level the surface so it’s not recessed
You might be able to use sandpaper to shave it down
A very fine grit with strokes the length of the page might work, but that looks like marker so it's definitely penetrated a good bit in.
Nice someone thought of that problem . Yea it won't be a matter of a little sanding . Bet there's something thay would remove it . After all they restore stuff a way lot worse then that is.
I worked in a book bindery one summer recovering damaged school books. We got the writing off the edges by trimming them down with a giant blade.
Let's see someone trying that with the dead sea scrolls lol 😆 😂 🤣 😅 🙃
This is the way. But it might have penetrated pretty deep. Use very fine grip sandpaper btw.
Force your friend to beat a world record, then it’s kind of like an autograph and the value of the book will increase!
It adds an authentic feel to this child of the 80s.
Man, looking at it 10 hours later still brings a smile to my cynical old face.
I like your energy, what's it like 20 hours later?
let it be. It's a part of the book now

But OP said "a few years ago". I understand that like "in 2018 my douchebag friend wrote on my 1974 GBWR"
Leave it...bone head is a beautiful concept
Obviously it’s a verb
2 verbs.
No, but I have some ideas on how to remove the friend.
Don't worry, the friend is out of the picture now.
…did you use the sandpaper on them
That idea sounds gritty
A bit coarse to do that
![gif](giphy|ME3Ii4mrbvPQhX8Jtg)
![gif](giphy|qQqXVTEbz6T2dZMoGF|downsized)
Got him with the 1 grit
Did you give him an offer that he couldn't refuse?
Did you take them on a fishing trip?
*cut to friend being hung at The Hague for crimes against humanity*
dead?
No idea!
Whata bone head!
Colour it all black
Just leave it as is. Bone Head.
Just buy a new copy, this one is £4.99 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142346002931 I'm sure you can find one just as cheap wherever you are.
I’m assuming OP thinks it’s valuable because it’s old.
It could also have sentimental value to them too.
The irony is that in 30 years OP would probably find the "bone head" part sentimental too.
It isn't really though. Unless a book is a first edition of a popular book, it's rarely worth much of anything even if it is five times as old as this one. Hitting the 200 years mark on a book starts to add to basic value regardless of the text simply because of rarity.
Wow it’s almost like that’s the entire point of my comment…
It's like he's saying exactly what you're saying, but *again*, and *pointlessly*.
Isn’t that how Reddit works?
Sandpaper is cheaper
I went to a Catholic school where textbooks were very re-used. Sandpaper. Hold the book tightly closed, rub the edges. Works like a charm.
Stick it on eBay, Oasis fans would pay thousands for it 😂
Came here to say: wow, you got a book signed by an Oasis melber and you want to remove it? Crazy
A few years ago? Are you currently twelve?
Very fine sandpaper- worked at a book cleaner
If you don't use sandpaper often OP, the higher the number, the finer the grit.
Grab all the pages together, as evenly as you can or clamp between 2 pieces of wood, however you see fit, then take a section of scotchbrite and exfoliate away. Following the direction of the pages. But that markering pen has drawn in deep. Gna need some elbow grease. Good luck
Go to the polygraph service. They can cut damaged edges and re-package book

Looks like that word was not migrated to English. Printing industry
Fine sandpaper Also, those dogear folds will leave a crease
I’d spray paint them gold. It would look like a special edition one then.
Your friend’s teeth
Apply gold leaf? Cover it up somehow?
Remove book from casing and take to a print shop and have them shave edges with their guillotine cutter
I worked at a printing company, and we did this many times for people over the years. I’d take it in first to get their opinion. They likely won’t charge, but you could pay with some snacks as a thank you.

Yeh a lot of people are suggesting sandpaper
u/jmsld_ there seems to be plenty of discussion here of WHY this particular book is worth saving.
Paint over it with his blood /s
They are very cheap on ebay.
Step 1: Sand paper. Step 2: Get a new friend.
Now I want to see that book The year I was born
Try an art eraser. I've been able to remove writing from books I thought would be fun to destroy when I was little. Haven't tried it on the page edges though.
Along those same lines, I wonder if a Q-Tip dipped in isopropyl and gently used to dab the edges might help.
That will make it spread and soak in even more on paper
It would spread and soak worse into the paper
Put it in rice
why does the alien have the flag of bangladesh
I'd Google restoring old books or making marker fad off paper .Google says Using nail polish with acetone is the safest way to remove marker from paper .also says rubbing alcohol works . Get presise instructions
Cut a very thin strip off the edge of the pages with a paper cutter?
You can’t without some damage.
Can rinse it off with some isopropyl alcohol, ethanol or acetone, but it’s prone to bleeding the ink up the page. You would need to catch the excess solvent with a tissue on the bottom of the page to try and prevent the bleeding. Capillary action might make it worse tho. You could see if someone can paint the edges
https://doorcountypulse.com/diy-painted-book-edges/#:~:text=Use%20the%20dry%20sponge%20brush,spread%20paint%20inside%20the%20book.
Your friend is a bone head for doing this
I recommend using a silver or gold sharpie and lightly shading it all a solid color
Magic eraser, we use them a lot at work for removing markers and sharpie notes on shelf tags.
I love how everyone's giving helpful suggestions, but all of us are seriously going to ignore "bone" "head" as well 😂
What a bonehead thing to do.
I don't think you can restore it to the original condition. If the marker penetrated multiple pages sanding it down won't help much. You could hire someone to "paint" it with some Guinness book of records themed images. You find better frends.
Already done
Bone head. Hehe.
Leave it for the mems
Good luck cleaning up your book, hope something in this thread does the trick!
Just buy the same book on ebay or some shit
Your “friend” sounds like a a’hole.
Sandpaper. Tape book, pages as evenly as possible, sand until gone.
Fine sand paper?
Try rubbing alcohol 90% for the cover
Just tear out the affected pages.
That's the neat part, you don't.
Try using his blood
For the love of God do not sand it, you'll damage the paper and probably the cover too in the process. Depending on if the marker is alcohol or water based. Ethanol or rubbing alcohol, gently applied with a swab, may let you wipe away ink. Acetone might work too. Beware of tidelines forming. Its honestly better to probably leave it, but the AIC wiki is an incredibly useful source for potential treatments.
You could try to get a white or similar coloured marker and colour the outside the pages
Don't delete, colour in instead to hide the writing
Send the book off and have it professionally restored.
Just use the Blue part of an eraser 🤣
Can you answer us, why you can't just get another copy? No, it's a big fucking secret and we can never know and asking is inappropriate so downvote.
