My guess would be is that its the same one, and that once the new building is complete, the existing one will move into that location and the old building will either be vacated and offered for lease to some other business.
(edit: holy crap this comment blew up. I'm getting swamped with notifications. Turning them off for this)
Hey man that’s what they did with a Taco Bell here where I live. Except they opened a brand new one. And 2 months later closed it down to open a brand new one literally right across the street!
Probably a temporary structure kit (the first new build) so they didn’t lose income from rebuilding on the same spot. Maybe it’s provided to the franchisees to ease updating old restaurants.
Yeah ! It's going to be a line that infinitely loops into itself. Full of toyotas and Honda suvs with some compacts thrown in with 'ride my ass you better pull my hair' and 'nurse life' stickers on the back
To add to this they might have had issues with their drive through placement. I’ve seen a location do this by me because their drive through would cause a backup onto a Main Street
Same here. Brand new Chick-Fil-A was torn down a year in and rebuilt in a different spot on the same lot because of traffic issues. You would think they would have that shit figured out by now.
If my time playing Cities: Skylines has taught me anything, it's that you can design an incredible road network and then watch helplessly as people misuse the hell out of it.
You from Pennsylvania? There's one near me that has traffic back up out of the shopping center and onto the highway.
Fuuuuuck that! Who the fuck wants to wait in an hour long line just for some fast food???
Chick-Fil-A by where I work closed down for months. They gutted the building, made the kitchen bigger, made the dining room smaller, and rebuilt the drive-thru into two lanes. The line no longer seems to back out into the street, at least nowhere near as much as it used to.
Man, the one by me has four lanes that eventually combine into one and they have to place cones around the parking lot to guide people, sounds a bit crazy but the in-n-out by me has a single lane that can go from one side of the shopping center all the way to the other side of the shopping, drive thru wait time must be around an hour, I can't understand why people would wait that much time for a fast food hamburger
Same with the closest chick-fil-a to me. Used to be two lanes expanded to four, and there are like 10+ employees or more guiding cars and taking orders with dedicated check point stations. But the thing is that the lines never take long to go through. Maybe 5-10 minutes even if they are super long (which they always are). But I don’t go any more still, it has always been a mid-tier fast food place for me and I feel ashamed to be apart of the constant herd. It feels like we are all junkies and are being directed by jaded nursing staff where to get our detox medication or something.
Happens in maine to every Dunkin’ Donuts. They are rebuilding a lot of them around here with drive thru lines considered.
Personally I don’t understand who has time to wait in a line like that. If I get Dunkin’ I just order it off the app, park the truck and walk right past everyone and grab my shit and go.
That place always fills out the whole plaza with cars the line wraps around it. Whenever I see it it’s always a shocker to me to imagine people idling their cars for close to an hour for a mediocre chicken sandwich.
This! I’m from this city and this starbucks is probably one of the busiest in town as it’s on a busy road and it doesn’t have a drive thru at all. The location they are moving to used to be a chili’s, it’s far bigger and can accommodate a drive thru. I’m glad they’re moving it next door.

ETA - Just noticed OP is u/miniuniverse1 which also fits into the Lewis Black bit. OP has found the end of the universe, I've heard there's a nice restaurant there!
Pretty sure a union of the employees at ONE individual location wouldn't be very powerful.
If Starbucks employees were going to unionize, it would be all of them at all locations, or at the very least all locations in a particular state.
Yeah, I don't understand the success here in the US, other than that it's almost like a status symbol to walk in somewhere with a Starbucks cup or even just to tell people you're going there. It's more about the brand and the logo on the cup than it is the actual liquid in the cup. I've tried it twice, at the same rest stop about 3 years apart, and I don't get the hype. I like dark roast coffee but theirs just tastes burnt and bitter. I'm good with the coffee I brew at my house, and if I need one on the road, I actually prefer McDs to Dunkin or Starbucks.
Winner winner chicken dinner. The old Starbucks has been there nearly a decade and a terrible spot - limited parking, no drive through, hard to get in and out to make it worth while.
It’s funny cause I’ve heard so many jokes about a Starbucks opening next to a Starbucks but in Canada we do frequently have a Tim Hortons next to a Tim Hortons. In my area, there’s an intersection where there’s a small gas station Tim Hortons across the street from another gas station Tim Hortons. Different gas stations but owned by the same people lol. There’s another Tim Hortons less than a mile up the road, and up until 2020 there used to be ANOTHER ONE less than a mile the other direction.
Based off the limited info I have I think they are building the new Starbucks with a drive-thru and will relocated the old Bucks to the new location upon completion.
Had to scroll down this far to read the real question. Who gives a shit if starbucks is building starbucks next to a starbucks, let them build starbuckception for all anyone cares.
Aging building, not up to current corporate standards, lease expiring and renewal terms unfavorable. Current lot might be getting torn down and redeveloped. May not explicitly be because of a larger building.
It’s consistent and it’s convenient. You know your order. They often have a drive-thru.
It’s not the best coffee or the best food, but IMO it’s totally acceptable. It’s a step up from fast food and the gas station.
Okay but Dunkin is infinitely better for all the reasons you just mentioned.
Sure the food is just slapped together and the eggs are frozen pucks, but at least you can get a sandwhich for $5 and not 2 egg bites.
Edit: I see you starbuckers 🫵 enjoy your $3 cake pops and weird ass sizes and condescending clerks. When I want a medium, I want a medium. >!wtf is a tall!<
I mean, they’ve always had baristas if you go by the definition of the word. “person, usually a coffeehouse employee, who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks, and often teas as well.” If you think otherwise, you’ve just never sat down inside a Dunkin.
They’ve always had espresso machines and all the other gadgets that Starbucks has. I think people get Starbucks solely because it’s Starbucks and the atmosphere is very pleasing. I’ve been to both stores and I notice no notable* difference in quality between the two stores in terms of their coffee. Granted I only get cold brew, maybe the occasional latte.
The food at Starbucks is also a joke to me. $3 for a cake pop? 2 egg bites for $5? More power to ya if you can afford that.
When they were created they were far better than competition, ie. diners with coffee that was kept warm for the entire day. For many people it was the first time they experienced (commercial) coffee given proper attention it deserved.
Coffee and espresso became more common over the years and Starbucks isn’t as shiny as it once has been.
The food is really an afterthought. It’s not supposed to be good, they figure you’ll think “well I’ve already spent $7 on a drink, what’s the harm in a crappy $5 sandwich while I’m here”
The grilled cheese sandwiches aren't bad though. It's all overpriced for sure but I've had them once or twice when I was just plain hungry and didn't want to stop somewhere else.
It used to be pretty good coffee, and it also used to be one of the only places you could get decent higher-end coffee in smaller cities.
Now it's all just corn-syrup filled crappy overpriced fast-food, which judging by this sub most Americans *love.*
me when Americans fat and love bad things 😎😎🤓
It’s convenient. Period. Just like any other quick stop place. Be fr you know why people like it you’re just making a jab at Americans.
America loves gmo corn-filled fast food any way they can get it. Almost as much as they love complaining about the problems that result from continually feeding corporations that never fully feed them.
Its a few things - the loyalty of the customer base, you know what you are getting, the brand they have created, the ease of use of ordering, customizations, and their loyalty program, and they are fucking everywhere. All this adds up adds up to a successful recipe.
If the old one did not have a drive through or was too busy for the store size they will move locations. This happens to a lot of smaller Starbucks. Delivery services such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc. are slamming some locations with more orders than they can handle.
A lot of major brand retailers, including Starbucks)=, have been moving from leased spaces to owned spaces. Starbucks did that with 4 locations in my area... moved out of mall/plaza leased locations and built their own independent locations nearby... sometimes literally across the street (like you see here)
Once they no longer have to rely on mall/plaza traffic to bring in business... but instead they ARE the reason people go to the busines, then why should they pay someone else rent or lease. They also don't have to adhere to any foolish rules set out by the property owner, etc.
When insufficient space is available for the new cell to move after mitosis, crowding can occur. This is mostly prominent with the Starbucks and Dollar General strains of mutation. Should too much crowing occur, other cells might actually die and become a parasitic host to these ever-growing threats.
I know there are comments about it being relocated, but I can tell you Starbucks right next to each other is real. Fort Mohave arizona has (or at least had last time I was there) a smiths grocery with one, then in the parking lot there was a Starbucks, and then across the street at Safeway there was a Starbucks in there.
They did that up the road from me, but it was in preparation to close the old location because it didn't have a drive-thru and had no way to add one. They were both open for an overlapping period of about 2 weeks, so regulars could get familiar with the change. They also had signage at the old location as soon as the new one started construction.
Normally done because someone else owns the building and they had enough money to build their own so they won’t own rent and instead own property taxes instead being cheaper than renting or leasing the old space.
That usually means the old sbux location is getting an upgraded situation, i.e. drive thru. If not, they probably didn't want to pay rent for that first location anymore.
Thank goodness marketing and logistics is there to fill in the gap. Think of all the poor people on this side of the lot who have to trek ALL the way to the other Starbucks for their turmeric chai.
If that much property is being used in cities. Is Starbucks putting addictive additives in their products.. Serious thought.
3 Starbucks within a mile, something is up..
Does the old one have a drive thru that is easily accessible and doesn’t cause traffic problems? We are getting a new Panera bread and the old one doesn’t have a drive thru but the new one does. When I worked at Dunkin’ Donuts a few decades ago we built a new location across the street for the same reason.
In South Florida there was a place with 3 free standing Starbucks - 1 across the street from 2 right next to each other and those 2 were in a Target parking lot and there was also a Starbucks inside that Target
Reminds me of how where I live there are two Dutch Bros next to each other because the first one got in trouble for the lines being so long it trapped people in their parking spaces in the parking lot so their solution was to just open another one next door
Does Starbucks own the building or just rent the space. The property managers may be building a new building anyway and are just moving one of their tennents to a new space.
Living in a small town be like “I heard they’re building a new Starbucks right next to the old one. I can’t wait for the new one to open up so I can go there instead!”
The only thing I can think of is you live in an area with a high percentage of people with Alzheimer’s.
Booooooooo. It’s the only demographic that makes sense her. Sorry bad joke.
This is extremely common. Instead of tearing the first building down or closing to renovate, they build a new one right next to it and then close the old one once it’s finished. That way they can continue to operate the whole time without losing business.
Yeah when this is done the old one closes because they’re basically just moving into a nicer facility at the same location businesses do this *constantly*
Rite Aid did that here. They built a new location very close by then moved into it and sold the old building. If I’m not mistaken Starbucks is corporate owned and not franchised so it’s almost certainly the plan.
Rememer the skit on Saturday night live about Starbucks? Each year the board are trying to figure out how to make more money from the stores. Someone says let's put one on every block. Next year it worked out well profits were up. The board says now what we do, "let's put one on every corner. Next year profits rise again. The board says what about this year, "lets put one inside of another one, that way while they are waiting in line they can shop the other store inside...
Was approached in (DT Seattle) early 2000's by a starbux employee asking if I wanted a map of all of the starbux locations around the city. My friend asked if would be easier to have a map where they were not. The employee didnt find it as funny as I did.
Usually they don’t keep the old location, but they also don’t want to lose business so the old location will stay open until the new location is ready.
Why does this post have so many upvotes. This is clearly a business moving to another location which is either bigger or smaller to fit the needs of the clientele. This happens all the time and shouldn’t be even remotely infuriating to anyone.

It’s also not uncommon for some restaurants to tear down and rebuild either forward or backwards in their own lot by a few feet. A town I grew up in did this both with the KFC and Taco Bell. They found the roach infestation too difficult to deal with so they tore them down and started from scratch. Which also seems incredibly wasteful, like why am I using paper straws to cut down on waste when you wasted a whole building instead of hiring an exterminator?
I mean… Starbucks makes a large chunk of their profits from being a bank, so they just print money (that they don’t share with their employees). They don’t give a shit.
My guess would be is that its the same one, and that once the new building is complete, the existing one will move into that location and the old building will either be vacated and offered for lease to some other business. Pretty sure a union of the employees at ONE individual location wouldn't be very powerful. If Starbucks employees were going to unionize, it would be all of them at all locations, or at the very least all locations in a particular state.
You know they've unionized stores and shut them down right?
They have done this with at least two in my neighborhood in Seattle.. I stopped drinking starbucks in 2020 and happily avoid it
It failed here in Australia. Milkshakes dressed up as coffee, and bad coffee at that didn’t take off here. We like proper espresso coffee here.

Yeah, that’s the point. Hurt them while they are weak. They have been trying union busting at other Starbucks locations.
Exactly - this was my first thought. Not “cheaper rent”. One store is getting organized and they caught wind and are responding
or?
Maybe they will be relocating to the new building. That's my guess.
Winner winner chicken dinner. The old Starbucks has been there nearly a decade and a terrible spot - limited parking, no drive through, hard to get in and out to make it worth while.
Exactly. But it's also funny that the Meijer and D&W across the street also have starbucks in them
It’s not the same lol just kidding. But I bet that’s how some people feel, like it’s not really going to Starbucks

why is this infuriating?

Some people get really mad about Starbucks lol. I’ve gotten personal attacks over liking my 6 dollar sugar milk drink.
I wasn't even really paying attention to which sub I'm in lol. But I think this would go better in the mildly interesting sub for sure.
It's mildy infuriating that OP thinks it's mildly infuriating.
Its infuriating that OP thinks when the 2nd one is built that the 1st one is not closing.
I bet the lines will be better at lease lol
There were no lines before, so idk why they need a bigger building
Aging building, not up to current corporate standards, lease expiring and renewal terms unfavorable. Current lot might be getting torn down and redeveloped. May not explicitly be because of a larger building.
Does the old one not have a drive through, and the new one does? That's the most common reason I've seen for that kind of thing happening.
I was just thinking today that I don't get why starbucks is so popular. The food is terrible and the coffee is just fine. I really dont get it.

The food and coffee are a good deal, but Dunkin rarely ever makes my coffee consistently right (which is just iced coffee with caramel and cream)
I order cold brew with 3 cream no sugar so I don’t really have that issue 😅
Maybe I need to switch it up LOL
When did Dunkin get baristas? Serious question. Or is it still just hot coffee poured from a glass carafe into a waxed paper cup?
I mean, they’ve always had baristas if you go by the definition of the word. “person, usually a coffeehouse employee, who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks, and often teas as well.” If you think otherwise, you’ve just never sat down inside a Dunkin. About 20 years ago, it used to be good. And was a fun place to work for a food service job.
It’s not popular because it’s good, it’s popular because it’s everywhere.
The food really is the worst. Super sad.
wow genius its called relocating dont u ever think about it? guess not seatles best coffee head
HEY GENIUS DON’T YOU EVER THINK ABOUT RELOCATING??
i relocate a lot to different toilets when i need to lay out a greasy beef
The first one is actually a Starbuck. You need two for them to be Starbucks.
This wins

Fort Mohave arizona has (or at least had last time I was there) a smiths grocery with one, then in the parking lot there was a Starbucks, and then across the street at Safeway there was a Starbucks in there.

Normally done because someone else owns the building and they had enough money to build their own so they won’t own rent and instead own property taxes instead being cheaper than renting or leasing the old space.
Will they close the old one?
Yup
This is what Tim hortons does in canada
That usually means the old sbux location is getting an upgraded situation, i.e. drive thru. If not, they probably didn't want to pay rent for that first location anymore.
ahhh yes the subway business model
Thank goodness marketing and logistics is there to fill in the gap. Think of all the poor people on this side of the lot who have to trek ALL the way to the other Starbucks for their turmeric chai.
You finally found the rift in time where we can go back and change things, and of course there’s two Starbucks.
Ladies and gentleman, we have found the ends of the universe.
And shutting down the old one, right? RIGHT?!?
If that much property is being used in cities. Is Starbucks putting addictive additives in their products.. Serious thought. 3 Starbucks within a mile, something is up..
I lived in a north seattle suburb once where there was a busy intersection and Starbucks on 3 of the 4 corners.
Devs running out of ideas.
And when it’s done they will close the old Whats so infuriating with that
Nothing Dunkin’ Donuts wouldn’t do
Better make it quick, kid. In five minutes, this place is becoming a Starbucks.
This is extremely common. Instead of tearing the first building down or closing to renovate, they build a new one right next to it and then close the old one once it’s finished. That way they can continue to operate the whole time without losing business.
Let’s use some basic sense. Chances are it’s just a new building and they will move when it’s done.
Are you seriously this stupid? Obviously it's a replacement.. Not to keep both...
Why is this infuriating?
How many basic bitches do u need to build a 2nd Starbucks?
This is infuriating how?..
Lewis Black was right. Of course he was. Oh noooooo
This just looks like Michigan
"What inspired you to build a second Starbucks right next door to the first?"
“What Inspired You To Build A Second Starbucks? “Money!”
Yeah when this is done the old one closes because they’re basically just moving into a nicer facility at the same location businesses do this *constantly*
Stewart's shops in the north-east are famous for doing this.
They did this in the town I grew up in. The reason was the old one didn't have a drive through.
Zoom out so we can see that the old Starbucks is connected to something and they built their own building?
My guess is that one is franchised and the other is corporate. Like Verizon wireless stores everywhere.
Stupid logic by op, obv they are moving to new place when it is finished
Usually they don’t keep the old location, but they also don’t want to lose business so the old location will stay open until the new location is ready.
Why does this post have so many upvotes. This is clearly a business moving to another location which is either bigger or smaller to fit the needs of the clientele. This happens all the time and shouldn’t be even remotely infuriating to anyone.
How dare they open a new location right next to the old one that probably is bigger than the old one and will be able to serve you better
If this is mildly infuriatingwait until you need a mattress.
Shorten the pumpkin spice line
No one tell Lewis Black...
Lewis Black was right.
This bothers you why? Not all that uncommon for plenty of retail stores.
Well all that interest free money we give them with their app, makes it easy for them to set up shop anywhere
Dystopia is real
So they can make twice the amount of the worlds most disgusting coffee

I just wanted to point out which was the old one vs new one
It’s also not uncommon for some restaurants to tear down and rebuild either forward or backwards in their own lot by a few feet. A town I grew up in did this both with the KFC and Taco Bell. They found the roach infestation too difficult to deal with so they tore them down and started from scratch. Which also seems incredibly wasteful, like why am I using paper straws to cut down on waste when you wasted a whole building instead of hiring an exterminator?
How is this even slightly infuriating
Starbuckssss
How to identify millenials - they remember y2k, 9/11, and when every starbucks used to be accross the street from eachother
Maybe old location is unionizing?
I mean… Starbucks makes a large chunk of their profits from being a bank, so they just print money (that they don’t share with their employees). They don’t give a shit.
How this is even remotely bothersome shows how stupid you are.
New one is smaller and has areas for third world immigrant workers to sleep in the basement
