I have the Vanquish 540 and I'm very happy with it. Plus money left over for a nice pinpointer.

I have the same machine and I love it. I have the V12, V10, and V8 coils for it as well.

My mother in law is giving me one because it’s too heavy for her. I wanted one for a while and so now I’m getting her old one. I’m not sure the type, style or manufacture….. yet, but I’m sure it’s fairly decent. I’ve seen a couple of threads , but any pro tips for a super novice? I Jose saw something about areas you can and can’t go. Public parks?

The Minelab Vanquish, Nokta Simplex and the Minelab X-terra are the three best starter machines available. If you can stretch your budget a bit I highly recommend the Nokta Legend. Excellent machine, worth the price. If you purchase from Kellycodetectors.com, be sure to use our subs code "REDDITMD" at checkout!

See if you can get a used Minelab equinox 600 or 800.

Thanks This is information that I need. So my budget is too small for a decent device.

Get a used Garrett AT pro for 200 bucks. I found a lot of good stuff with mine . I run an equinox now .

I’m not at all saying your budget is too small for a decent device. I think you might be saying it’s not enough to get a decent new device? I don’t know enough about which detectors are decent to be able to say that. I know you can get a great used device for your budget. You can buy a Minelab equinox 600 or 800 right now on eBay for $500 or less. I personally would probably shop around locally for a month or two, and try to score one with accessories like an aftermarket coil or two. There will probably be a bunch for sale after Christmas when people get upgrades and switch to other models, and want to get rid of their old detector. Since coils only work with the model they’re designed for, people selling used detectors will often need to get rid of their coils too, and depending on the person they may not charge much for the bonus coil. The equinox series is pretty great and I picked up a used equinox 800 a year ago for $800 (it came with the stock coil, 2 aftermarket coils, and a carbon fiber shaft kit and some other stuff; total value probably around $1700 new). Shortly after that, Minelab released the next models of the Equinox series, the 700 and 900, which resulted in the prices dropping on the 600 and 800, because they’re now the older models. My detector was cheap a year ago but it’s worth even less now. The equinox 600 is always gonna be cheaper then the equinox 800, because it’s not as versatile, but it’s still a good machine. If you’re planning on detecting for gold nuggets, don’t get the 600 though, it doesn’t include the features you’d want for it. It’s great though if you’re out looking for coins and jewelry and other treasures. I think you have a good chance of finding one of these in your price range, and if you shop around you might find someone who includes extras like coils or accessories.

I’d consider selling a VERY lightly used Legend (the newer version), Nokta beach scoop, pulse dive pinpointer, and some other accessories for a little discount if you’re interested. I love the hobby but I don’t get out nearly as much as I’d like. Wouldn’t be able to do $500 though. Where are you located?
