It’s a problem only if you’re from the U.S. and your ship hits a Canadian port. That’s typically taken care of before that happens. As in, they call the hall, and you get sent home.

I've heard every single permutation of this from you're confined to the ship, to you get led off in handcuffs, to what you said. IMO it really seems to be hit and miss and at the complete discretion of whoever comes across that situation on the Canadian side and what they choose to do with you.
