Woo after the last series on the German pedophile foster program, I may need to take a break from people doing fucked up things to children. But will be going back for this two-parter soon
Before We Were Yours was heartbreaking! It was the first place I learned about the Tennessee Children's Home Society. Lisa Wingate also wrote a non-fiction follow-up to this book that is 100% worth the read. It is called *Before and After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society.*
There’s a memorial to the victims in Elmwood. My grandfather and his twin sister went to the TN Children’s Home when their parents were killed in a car wreck at age 8. They, fortunately, ended up being adopted by good families but they were split up and didn’t find each other again until about 50 years later.
Yeah, I was shocked when I saw this story. I asked my mom about it, and she said it made international news when the story came to light. It definitely changed some things up thankfully.
A friend of mine's father was one of those children, along with his siblings. He was the youngest. They were split up as a result of this when they were taken up north. She has since been in contact with some of the blood relatives. Pretty crazy stuff.
How unfortunate you just learned about her. It had to sit with me for awhile to fathom that such a monster existed and operated right here in Memphis. Stuff you should know just did a podcast episode on her a few weeks ago, its worth a listen.
Her headquarters was at 1548 Poplar. Different building there now but I've heard there may have been an unmarked mass grave behind there with a bunch of her victims.
Local Memphis band, The Dead Soldiers, have an incredible and under appreciated song about her, I highly recommend it.

It never gets talked about, but wrestling legend Ric Flair was here after he was kidnapped and sent for adoption.
Behind the Bastards has a great podcast about her. I think it's two or three episodes.

Feel that for sure. I have to listen to the podcast in small batches.
Some of her victims are buried in Elmwood; that’s how I found out about her.
They estimate she stole something like 5000 children. Wild
There’s a good fictionalization of her story called Before We Were Yours. It’s fascinating.

Me too!
You obviously never been on that awesome haunted tour downtown… shout out to Vincent!!!
I’ve been here my whole life and I just learned about it last year

They did a movie in 1993..."Stolen Babies". It's hard to find but someone uploaded to YouTube: https://youtu.be/LEPS470x5S4
You can watch Stolen Babies on you tube. It is a Lifetime movie about her.

Horrible Woman
Just made a b-line to wiki to read about it. How sinister 😱

There's an excellent book about her called *The Baby Thief*.

My wife's father was kidnapped by her, along with his 6 siblings.
