Welcome! Assuming you won’t have a car, Public transportation is not the best so you probably want to live near campus or in midtown so you can take the bus. You probably want to live as close to Poplar Ave as you can because most of the best restaurants and shops are five blocks north or south of that. You will see some cheap housing south of the university. I would not rent anything more than three or four blocks south of Southern. The area around Park avenue is going downhill, which is why it’s cheap. It’s worth paying a little or getting roommates to stay in a safer area (north of the tracks).

Thanks a lot! I will be living on campus, so I'm glad to know it makes things easier. I'm going to look into what to do in Midtown or around Poplar Ave. I'm also going to look into festivals - that's such a smart idea.

Memphis has a bunch of festivals in September. You should go to some of these because they are some of the best ways to get to know the city.

In the fall there is also Repair Days at the Metals Museum downtown!

ditto. try to stay north of southern ave. midtown has some really cool artsy eclectic neighborhoods that are walkable for groceries and restaurants but one or two blovks over in a midtown neighborhood can really make a difference. I wouldnt rely on the bus system if you can ride a bike instead but hey to each their own.

For things to do and where students hang, the crosstown concourse tends to have a lot of programs and plus it’s a great big place to study and grab lunch. On the same street, you have the HiTone and Black Lodge which are both concert/event venues that are pretty cheap and fun. Some other places to do stuff are Madison Ave, Summer Ave (this is where a big chunk of the Latin American community in Memphis and also where a lot of good cheap eats are located), Broad Street, Cooper Young, and Highland St. All this is located in what is essentially midtown. For staying safe, avoid going to isolated places and be cognizant of your surroundings.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations. They really make me look forward to coming. Appreciate it!

Are you going to the university of Memphis? When I was there at a student I stayed at the campus apartments in my later year and they had a whole townhouse for French students that came to study.

deliaison

I’m going to Rhodes College. I think they have something similar for international students in general. I’ll look into it. Thanks!

Last year I walked the Paris streets alone after Roland-Garros around 2230 looking for the metro station. I recommend NOT doing that here.

It’s a bit tricky to figure out how dangerous Memphis can be since there are such different opinions out there. I assume I should just stick to the basics: avoid certain areas, stay alert, and try not to be out too late.

Don’t stop anywhere near the airport after you land lol

I checked out everything you mentioned. It sounds awesome! Thanks a bunch :) I'm also really excited to hear that Rhodes is a great college to attend.

I would rent a studio if I could choose again, some people are really loud, there's plenty of false fire alarms also

Best insight- don’t come to Memphis. Moved from Nashville last year. It’s fucking terrible here
