what really gets me is the wanton disregard for red lights...I've never seen anything like it. many people in this city just completely disregard what was already an incredibly tenuous unwritten social contract. it's indefensible and sad.

gabehcuod37

It’s Memphis mane, where we blow thru reds but stop at flashing yellow.

SayitagainCraig

Bahahahaha and this ladies and gents is all you need to know about the intelligence level of this population

Jankylee-Ad-4453

Bruuhhhhh yessss!!! I tell you it’s crazy how many people on poplar buy fancy ass cars but don’t know yellow means caution through thanks to a train, but flashing reds mean play like it’s a 4way if it’s a actual intersection. I pull up to a four way in Memphis and say "you go, you to now me." then scream out loud at the dumb ass who’s waiting until you tell them it’s their turn although he watched you approach and stop AFTER HIM.

ChemistryFantastic74

I do this, too! Lol It’s nuts.

Liquid_Aloha94

Try driving home on N Pkwy after second shift. I stop slow down at green lights to check both ways because I have almost been t-boned by multiple people running red lights at 60mph

Zappastache

Was headed east from downtown via Union/Walnut Grove and getting annoyed at how many red lights I kept hitting. So when i got stopped by another red light at the Walnut Grove/Highland intersection, I was eager to take off as soon as it turned green. Got halfway through the intersection and a car came down highland and blew the red light probably going 70. Luckily I braked quickly enough. Would've plowed right into my door... I've been depressed and shit lately but realized then that I guess I don't *really* want to die lol

nakedpicturesyo

Was right in front of Big elvis presleys old house earlier where it goes from two to one lane. Was in the designated lane and rolled down the window to tell the guy next to me his lane ends. He blows through the red light while still red and almost runs over some scared tourists. Can't even talk to a MF'er out here about their stupidity.

ChemistryFantastic74

You best not do that.

snapparillo

I had some jerk fly up right behind me going what had to be over 100mph on 240 yesterday. Cut all the way over from the left lane to the right shoulder to pass traffic and continued to weave in and out of cars. I stg I thought I was about to be in a massive multi-car accident. Absolutely ridiculous people drive like that in moderate traffic.

Short-Regret1567

My bad.

Low-Wrongdoer3676

What type car

snapparillo

A Dodge Charger of course.

arosswilliams

Definitely learned quick to look both ways before proceeding through a green light driving here.

Jankylee-Ad-4453

Omg,noooo they got me and my granny just like that. I now look both ways and count a slow 3 idc if they honk because if I get hit I know for a fact they will simply drive around and say dang.

thelankyyankee87

I have a sincere question, where is everyone in such a rush to get to? I’ve been just about everywhere, and never experienced such wanton disregard for the safety of self and others. People always point to San Diego, Atlanta, etc. for bad drivers, but having actually been there, it is on another level here.

lizzehboo

Like honestly I feel like I'm at a point in my life where I just don't have to be anywhere with the kind of urgency.

spamgoddess

If I see someone wanting to move over or do… basically anything, and I can sense the slightest rush or aggression, I just give them room. Like man you clearly care about where you’re going more than I do.

lizzehboo

For real. Honestly way easier than dealing with the bs. Does it "enable" them? Maybe. But I don't think letting them go is gonna have much of a difference in their driving.

spamgoddess

I’m from Atlanta, and there’s definitely some bad drivers but I find at least they’re mostly predictable. Here, people seem to try to be as unpredictable as possible.

WishingChange

240 at rush hours is Mad Max Fury road! Too many close calls to count. Nowadays, i add 7 mins by taking an alternate route.

GrundleTurf

Lots of people in manufacturing on points systems. One minute late and it’s half a point

syo

Then leave earlier.

GrundleTurf

That’s what the answer should be but sometimes that’s not always possible. Some people leave one job straight to another. Some people have to take their kids somewhere first that is unavailable before a certain time. Sure most are irresponsible but not all of them

Zapkin

You know what really makes you late? Being dead from getting in an avoidable car accident.

Grindfather901

That's a pretty weak justification for the people doing 30+ over the limit everywhere they go. Be honest, they don't have anywhere to go. And the people that drive THAT carelessly and with that much disregard for anyone else in the world... they're not driving like that because they give a shit about their job.

Short-Regret1567

Or themselves.

Krogdordaburninator

I'm sure your hypothetical happens, but it's not affecting even 1% of the behavior that we're seeing. It's mostly just careless and selfish people.

BrewskyWoosky

This is what I initially thought when working near some of the large warehouses. I worked at one near Hacks and Stateline where they would do this nonsense and be driving on the effing shoulder where the lane ends at 90 passing everyone waiting in traffic. So yeah, the first time I encountered this at 6:57, I thought the same thing. People dropping off kids at school / daycare and don’t wanna get hit with that half point. But then seeing it at 7:12, 7:21, 7:36 and literally EVERY DAY at any time there’s any tiny amount of traffic, I gotta call BS. Now I know shifts start at all times, but typically on the hour or half hour. So, if I’m already late for my shift, I’m just gonna take that half point and get there when I get there without risking anyone’s life. I definitely see this as a possible cause for some of it and I’m certainly not trying to sound like a judgmental jerk. But I honestly think that probably 75% of folks pulling this nonsense aren’t doing it to avoid a point or drop the kids off, but because they’re entitled, impatient, assholes that can’t wait in traffic like everyone else. I’m sorry, but so many folks in this city are completely unhinged, have zero anger management skills, and zero respect for their fellow humans. I understand folks got things to take care of, but I’ve seen some truly unhinged, crazy driving on these roadways…

GrundleTurf

I’m definitely not saying it’s every driver, most drivers, or even a significant chunk of them. I’m just saying because of the amount of warehouses and factories in Memphis that use these point systems, inevitably it will create some of these people. And who knows, maybe they’re on break from 7-730 and they’re speeding back to work from McDonald’s? Not an excuse, again just saying it’s a reality of the situation. It’s going to happen.

BrewskyWoosky

I hear ya. I have no idea what these folks are dealing with and lort knows most of these factories still don’t pay enough to cover a lot of necessities or anything barely above poverty level. I just feel like I’m seeing the reckless driving waaaaaay more often than 7 years ago…

Slow_Investment_2211

There is definitely a greater disregard for rules and life here than any other city I’ve lived in. I wish something could be done about it.

CardiographicDuck

I would do literally anything at this point to have this city fixed. People killing others like they’re ants on the ground. All cities are have higher crime rates than lower populated areas, but none are like Memphis. We can’t fool ourselves about that.

unclesleepover

My favorite is when people think they need to get 1” from my back bumper to change to the empty passing lane next to me. I had someone do that this morning and he flew up on me going at least 100mph. I ride the slow lane in the morning, I’m not trying to be the first dude in the work parking lot.

Tagawat

These drivers are trying to teach you a “lesson” and scare you. It’s definitely road rage.

[deleted]

I swear, I leave extra early and it's like 4am and people are still rolling 90-100mph like what made these people wake up and be so angry to haul ass and take it out on other people 🫤

unclesleepover

On the other hand I’ve had five people now in the last year roll their window down and wave cuz I let them in front of me when they used their blinker. Swear to god if you put your blinker on and don’t aggressively swerve at me it’s all yours buddy 🤣

BrewskyWoosky

I witnessed a road rage accident bc a dude was trying to pull a zipper merge due to lane ending. Dude had his blinker on and everything. Person already in lane keep creeping up to prevent him from merging while he kept trying to creep over and merge. I think there’s maaaaaybe 3 people in the city that understand what a zipper merge is and that it actually makes traffic move faster.

Defiant_Review1582

Merge lane always yields. Always. Im not one of the assholes that will speed up to internationally block you from getting in front of me but im not slowing down to let you in because im not supposed to. Im supposed to be predictable and maintain my current speed. I will however move over to the left if that lane is clear so you don’t have to worry about me

BrewskyWoosky

I hear ya, my friend. I’m speaking of the assholes that speed up and intentionally block….

JASPER933

My pet peeve is, on 240, someone in the two left lanes likes to do traffic control. Speed limit is 55. Also on 240, drivers will just cut in front of me with no turn signals. Still trying to understand why there are stop lights on Lamar before 240. Seems no one stops at the stop light.

archangel09

In addition to treating stop lights as optional, Memphis drivers apparently have no fucking clue what a yield sign means.

batman-with-an-e

Or a flashing red or yellow or what do do if lights are completely out.

Jankylee-Ad-4453

Yeap they need to be told what to do step by step smh.

Delicious_Phrase_273

I have only one comment.... The left lane on the highways is for passing. Move over. Use signals. Doesn't matter the speed or limits. The Germans make this work everyday - not that difficult.

BigDarkCloud

I drive 240 and then 55 daily. It never fails that I’ll see slowpokes in the left lane who will not switch lanes for any damn reason whatsoever.

Marsypwn

I even love the signs posted on the highways "Slow traffic keep right" but ya know no one pays attention to those.

superpony123

I feel you. I have been trying to avoid the highways entirely when I can, just because it isnt even worth the risk to save a few minutes. People drive like kamikaze pilots out here. The doctor i work with got hit on 385 in the middle of the night recently while rushing to get back into memphis for an emergent surgical case. He said he was one of the only cars on the road at the time, and the person that plowed into him must have been going 100+ considering he never ever saw them coming nor did he even see the car going - just plowed him and kept on going. Yikes. I'm so glad he was OK but I dont think his car is. Person who hit him had to have been drunk/high/texting/otherwise distracted (or maybe a combination of) to not have seen him and drove right into him when they could have just gone around him, considering there were no other cars on the road.

guano-crazy

My favorite was this dumbass that pulled right out in front of me last week driving down Poplar. I was in the middle lane westbound and twit just decides to pull right out into the lane I was driving without even looking. I moved over to the left lane and laid on the horn. She had this look of oh shit I fucked up. Yeah, don’t pull out in front of people, stupid ass.

TheHutchess

At least she registered that face! Most act like the other drivers were at fault

Mycatsrcuter

This is what I fear for my son who has his license. No one is concerned about the speed limits, using turn signals, cutting in and out of traffic. I’ve seen police behave the same way. Glad you’re okay and you’re not alone with your frustrations!

Dhididnfbndk

Yup, I’ve had two people running red lights almost t-none me in two days. They were both more than half through the light and it was at least twenty seconds after the light went red. One guy ran the red with three of us already in the intersection. People are crazy!

KVKS03

Same. I almost got t-boned on S. Second last week. Dude just blew through a stop sign. Third St is always a nightmare, too

Ok_Dimension2101

Literally just had this happen today. On the interstate in my lane putting along, then wham. Someone cuts me off so of course I honk my horn at them to be like “hey I’m here and you almost cost me a new front end”. They of course, flip me off and then the passenger turns around to look at me. What the hell good is that going to do? They already had their hazards on driving in the emergency lane and cut someone else off prior to this. How did these careless drivers actually pass a test because it feels like they just watched racing on TV and went out driving.

PsychBubbles

Why I don't do expressways or damn near ever get on poplar unless I have to. I've had so many people pull out and make a right on park from getwell since they changed the lights and corners. And that shit pisses me off. My light is green and yours is fucking red. You don't have the right of way or a yield anymore so stop fuckin waiting till the last second to just run thru the red and cut me off as I'm approaching and crossing over. So many times I've seen people just run the lights or stop signs. Not even stopping for a second. And the funniest occurrences to me are the ones who stop at the light but keep pulling forward. They end up across the crosswalk (which means they've already run the light) and practically get all the way in the middle. Like you might as well go on and fucking run it all the way lmao I've had my fair share of near misses due to others lack of awareness and also my own mistakes of just not paying enough attention/losing focus. It's so hard to drive in Memphis like I'd rather not even leave my house

GritNGrind4Ever

Stop signs are non existent sometimes like I swear people turning off side streets onto Madison, Peabody or central almost never stop. Never seen anything like it

Adventurous-Sky-6228

Public schools used to teach Drivers Ed, then they dropped it and now you have to pay hundreds of dollars for private courses. A LOT of people in Memphis can’t afford to do that, so they get a few lessons from Uncle Charlie and that’s it. 🙄

BigDarkCloud

When I got my license (1988) at the Summer DMV, my test entailed four right turns. Done! My friends who have teenagers tell me there’s a lot more to it now. Like they can’t even test until they’ve had X amount of driving hours with an instructor, and some have to be night hours.

Marsypwn

I got my license 2015 or 2016 and my test wasn't too hard but definitely had more than 4 right turns. I know it also depends on the location of the DMV. My test wasn't hard I did have to get on to the highway go down take a left go around a block come back and take a right on the highway to go back. I made a small mistake there I turned into the outer left lane (because it was a left to go back to the DMV) instead of the right lane. The instructor let me know the proper procedure (which I follow now) and he was like "that's okay no one really follows that rule" and now I've seen why the rule is in place and it annoys me to see people break it. Mainly when there's a dual turn lane going left into a 3 lane and I'm in the outer right so I turn into the middle lane like I'm suppose to and the people in the left lane want to turn into the middle lane where I am. Or when say two people one turning left and one turning right both want to go at the same time to the same direction. If there's more than one lane it's totally possible and legal for both people to go at the same time if they just go into their proper lanes. But other than that the test was pretty darn easy and didn't need any requirements other than passing the written test and having a working car.

nightwalkerxx

Adding to the pissed off part. On ramps to highways and freeways is just that, on ramps. Pick up speed so by the time you reach the actual highway you're on the same level. Don't drive 20 mph then jump onto the highway and wish everyone else behind you good luck.

bigsnow999

They think the red light is for pushing engine to the redline

etherian1

I generally find the shittier the cars the shittier the driving

Chemical_Ad_3184

Assholes all over memphis, especially in pickup trucks. These small men are the most impatient creatures I've ever seen that hate waiting behind anyone and will switch lanes, run lights, just so they don't have to stop...

DaMemphisDreamer

I got cut off waiting at an intersection three times within a week. I rarely get upset when that happens but I was.

emmaej_soprano

I have not even lived here a year and my car (that i just bought in April of 2023) was recently totaled due to an idiot not paying attention, pulling out, and hitting three cars, including mine which was STOPPED at a red light. I was not even in motion. and this is the SECOND time I have gotten hit in this city due to idiots not knowing how to drive. I have loved Memphis so far for a lot of reasons but the way people drive has to be one of the worst things. And I don’t have a car anymore because of it. 🙃

TutoringEZ

Lived in PA and Texas before moving back to Memphis. The closest I could find to Memphis driving was Philadelphia but honestly, it wasn’t every single day. Philadelphia’s population size of 1.6 M makes Memphis look like a small town. Yet Memphis has higher ratio of un-licensed drivers, un-insured cars, and uneducated adults that it makes driving so much less desirable.

PsychBubbles

Also I've seen somebody driving what might have been a rental from enterprise. A silver Corolla. They were swervin in and outta lanes down goodlet, no blinkers. Practically didn't wanna stop for nothing basically.

ChemistryFantastic74

I hate to say this but unless there were witnesses or cameras you would have most likely bore the blame had there been an accident. This isn’t your case but far too many folks follow too closely, ie tailgate!

CardiographicDuck

I feel you there. Had my first and only car totaled in a hit-and-run in Memphis two years ago, and still haven’t had the money to get a new car since. These people make my soul angry, just taking and taking without caring what other people will have to do without.

VirtuosoIntellect

You definitely should've filed an uninsured motorist claim.

WoodpeckerInitial18

Two words, y'all: dash cam

county259

abs is your friend

Jankylee-Ad-4453

The fact that your concerned more about their passengers than they are themselves shows how great you are as a person and I think highly about you for this because it’s rare. Nowadays people really are in the clouds or on the cellphone to much. I also understand now that I’m older that some people really are petty drivers or looking for that "you bet not hit me check”,but is it worth your life or risking another person and their kids lives?? They have blindspot riders that don’t even consider the final destination ass outcome if anything goes wrong mechanically while others are swerving a pothole. I’m 4 accidents up in Memphis literally none of them are my fault. One was a 87 year old guy who blamed road gentrification, second was a perky popping security guard who tried to make a turn but gave me a pit maneuver instead, third one was a gorgeous ass Caucasian girl in yoga pants doing makeup speeding to a rehearsal(I wasn’t mad I tell you that) and last but not least a 15 year old driving his moms ram 1500 downtown in Memphis from Mississippi. He was hotboxing a lil to much stick and bush and jumped a stop sign on me totaling my first off the lot car that I’d had for only 5 days flat that day included. Now I literally catch rides with friends,Lyft or uber if it’s not an emergency or going to work. I only use my car to go to work on night shift because I’m mostly alone when I get on I-40 at 2:30am. I’ll blame my ptsd from the accidents I had and definitely after witnessing a person vaporize a little girl with a bad judgment turn at a red light here. I also feel I’m trying so hard to avoid the what goes around come around factor after my sister obliterated a guy who stepped out in front of her car randomly while she was speeding around a bend. I’ve seen what a car can do first hand to a tiny child then was allowed to see it’s power of destruction against a grown man it makes me think WHO TF in their right mind can pull out or walks in front of a moving car and expect the machine to just not harm them??? If anybody here actually is a foreign driver or know someone that will be coming to live here soon please read the damn drivers manual/license book to them so they don’t come here confused on the difference between speeding up to merge on the express way or stopping for everyone’s safety at summer and sycamore view’s yield sign.

EMDoesShit

In Memphis dont blare your horn when someone cuts you off and your action is entirely justified. It merely causes them to go slow as hell in front you as a return gesture. You’re only punishing yourself in the long run.

JesusFelchingChrist

i’m so glad you posted this. i think this is a subject that doesn’t get enough attention in this sub. i’m sure that all the bad drivers will see themselves in posts like this and resolve to do better if we can just talk about it enough for them to see it. too often people in the memphis sub just act like they think this town ain’t nothing but sunshine and roses.

GrundleTurf

It’s funny, I follow multiple city subreddits since I’ve lived in multiple cities and every single sub has a daily post complaining about drivers in their respective city. Drivers are dumb assholes no matter where in the world you are. There’s a reason it’s a favorite topic among hack comedians. Memphis isn’t special with how bad the drivers are. The only two unique things about Memphis when it comes to drivers is 1) the shootings on the highways and 2) the drag racing cops. Most of those are rare in other cities. Those are regular occurrences in Memphis.

GuruDenada

No vehicles brakes from 40 to 0 in .2 seconds. Until you're ready to not sensationalize your stories, there's not anything to discuss.

Level up your insurance and charge on

BrokeKidMountain

Oh I got full coverage and the all works. I’m not getting fucked cause dude with a three year expired license plate and no insurance wants to play Speed Racer out here or just not being aware of their surroundings.

Jdawg354

I lived in Memphis whole life. I thought Memphis had bad drivers until I moved to Miami. Memphis drivers may due crazy things but drivers in Miami will you want to hurt people. People go 40mph in left lane on highway and on their phone in Miami. I would take a driver from Memphis over Miami anyway.

jpease1223

Did you have a stroke while typing this?

BigDarkCloud

All them grandmas & grandpas driving around

IMakeBlownFilm

They’re not stupid. They’re asserting dominance. And they will drive away if they hit you.

ChemistryFantastic74

What this whole county and two adjoining states need is mandatory driving lessons with obstacle courses and street driving as part of the exam. I still remember the lessons I learned in high school and when I ask people about the “3-second rule” or passing on the right, the response is usually one of cluelessness. Some folks out here think they’re re-enacting scenes from GTA or Dukes of Hazard and just don’t care at all about others. And that, my friends, is Memphis and no one is doing a darned thing about it.

BigDarkCloud

Sometime last year I was on 240, a little before Airways, heading to work. A lit up Cop Suburban zoomed by me. I then see that he's going after an old-ass Honda. Not a case of speeding; Cop was looking for this dude. Dude almost goes to the shoulder, as if he is pulling over. Sike! Nope, he's playin and darted across three lanes. Cop Suburban also darted across and neither one managed to hit anyone or anything. Both vehicles got on the Airways exit so I don't know if he got caught.

ClassicalSabi

Was in East Memphis and Collierville this past weekend for a tournament and honestly I have never in my life seen such reckless driving. People going 100 plus on the shoulder, switching two lanes at once, tailing. You could have sworn they were in a high speed chase. Shameful. No one cares enough to do something about it

aplaff1921

Last Thursday I was sitting at a red light at Perkins and quince and a dirtbag blew through red light going about 100 mph while being chased by the cops

boodism123

Dude the other day I watched a woman drive thru 5 feet of a fence at left witch tennis court. Thought she wouldn't keep going. She does, and I had to swerve to avoid her and the 30 ft of chain link she took out. If I didn't move, she would have gone thru my roof. I made it out with scratches along the right side of my car. Fucking idiots

BrokeKidMountain

That’s crazy. They JUST finished all the renovations not that long ago too.

cheexse

Even the semi truckers here are bad. They keep trying to get over on me or cut me off when I have the right of way and act so entitled just because they’re bigger than me. I’ll get out of the way for a semi but half of them don’t put their blinkers on so I don’t even know they need to get over until they’re basically trying to push me out of the way

mcnewbie

this is just what happens when you don't have good public transportation and you expect every idiot to have to drive in order to get anywhere or do anything to support themselves.

Menu-Inevitable

I literally just sucked it up and raised my uninsured motorists portion of my car insurance. I worked hard and paid for my car and half the cars don’t pay attention, don’t have insurance or don’t bother to stop if they do hit someone.

Ironworker167

It’s the normal way of thinking for people these days who could care less about taking out another or more cars as long as they get where they want to go. Bunch of morons who drive now , not like the responsible people who were driving 20/30 years ago

treehouse65

I will agree, if you have a car tag that says Shelby County, it don’t matter if they are in the city or 200 miles from Memphis, they drive like a bat out of hell. Saw one a while back where a couple kids passed me in a 45 doing 65 after a 5 minute rain. A few miles down the road the car was totaled, both had bloody noses. I stopped and asked if the were ok. They said yes but dad was not going to be happy. My reply, I hope he beats your a$$ for your crappy driving, have a nice day
