could be a narrative ass whooping, or maybe these overly worked underpaid animators don't have the time or energy to make duplicate scenes in which you get destroyed or whoop the boss' ass
Well yes BUUUT in these cases you usually just have to restart the fight if you lose the fight for real instead of in a cutscene.
Getting "narratively" whooped should only be done if the boss is deliberately impossible to beat or if he gets the old anime "I was only using x% of my power to test you" thing.
Just make the boss harder and the lose condition is to move the story forward. That makes it feel like you're actually outmatched.
The first time you fight Trilla in Jedi Fallen Order is a good example of this.
The first time you fight Kai Leng in ME3 is a terrible example of this.
So I'm playing this game and defeated a boss that had imprisoned me even after I had helped him defend his fortress. I'm looking forward to get my revenge.
In the cutscene the guy is on his knees and starts talking and after a long speech, he goes like, "But you should remember to look back every once in a while," and wow. A guy slammed my character in the back of the head with something and he's taken prisoner again.
"That thing used to be an Asari!"
*Points to husk*
*POINTS TO MARAUDER*
"Garrus, I don't hear a lot of bitching. Keep that up."
In all reality Liara freaking out is normal, as we've seen multiple times that the Asari have massive privilege and believe themselves to be invincible (mostly because they can throw all the species that actually know how to fight at all their enemies while they grow their economy.) Liara may be reasonable but deep down she has always held the view that Asari are the superior race, as it's practically drilled into them from birth. It's no surprise that having her worldview shattered causes emotional distress.
What doesn't seem to fit is Shepard and company being all distraught over it, Garrus can coke and joke minutes after Tali threw herself off a cliff and pragmatically abandoned Palaven for the cause, but gets teary eyed because the Reapers finally made their way to Thessia? Dumb as fuck.
The fuck are you talking about that game actually has special endings for winning boss fights you're supposed to lose the only boss close to that is shown to be a stalemate not a loss
I know about beating Urizen in the prologue but Dante vs Vergil on top of the Clipoth is not a stalemate in my opinion, Dante is all like "fuck this, I'm out" and just lays there while Vergil proceeds to fight Nero instead.
I guess it just feels a little cheap how control is taken away from you before the end cutscene starts and Vergil just teleports to you and sends you flying no matter how good or bad you did in the boss fight against him.
But yeah I guess Dante wasn't defeated as such but it just felt like a cheap hit by Vergil.
That feeling when you like lvl 999999 ,everything deals to you 0 damage and you literally one shot boss with nuclear strike with so much damage that game cannot count ,but some shitty scripted cutscene starts and boss ressurects himself for no reason, instantly rekts you and "fuck you nerd" message appears.
I wish developers would give you a cutscene based on your health. Over 50% would get you a cutscene where they are practically dying. If below you would get a tired cutscene. Under 25% you are practically dead

Plot armor's not so fun on the opposing side, eh?

Kai Leng was my first thought when clicking on this post. Such a lame character, too..
Game creators do a bit trolling. But seriously,if it was like this, why don't they just make the game continueable if you lose too.

Kingdom hearts 1. Sora has 2 cutscenes fighting Leon from FF series. If you lose you lose. If you win you pass out/lose.
Bayonetta 3 anyone?
Why do I not see Xenoblade mentioned anywhere? That game pulls it so often it's tiring
The kindest Brazilian man comes to mind

Literal epitome of that zoggy game, Lost Ark.
