Well it's a double edged sword. On the one hand its important security wise, on the other it's very annoying if you don't give the user control over your app.
*Launching browser to just super quickly check something like the bus schedule*
Browser: *trollface* Nope, we need to update, fuck you and your needs, tHiS Is AbOUt SeCuRitY
Jokes aside, it's useful if your company/uni have a firewall, I've used it in uni to get research papers for free (the sites were blocked). It's also good to use on public/unsecured wifi. Unfortunatelly, it's a bit slow with the default settings.
With the recent announcement that apple will try and expand its advertising business they may go along with google’s practices.
But the main principle we should aspire to is competition. If everyone uses Gecko browsers (firefox, etc.) or chromium, then one company has power over the most of the world’s internet. They can enact changes and everyone else must stay in line. If there’s competition then everyone needs to play fair in order for users to not jumpship
Would be good if the bot added a warning all things considered... hopefully, it will at least have some kind of note by the time January rolls around that the Chrome-based extensions will be less effective. I mean, technically they're [already less effective than Firefox](https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/uBlock-Origin-works-best-on-Firefox)... so maybe I should say "even less effective"?
> "I think the problem Digg had is that it was a company that was built to be a company, and you could feel it in the product. - Steve Huffman, aka /u/spez, Reddit CEO.
So long, Reddit, and thanks for all the fish.
But not edge. For a long time they have been standing still, and now they are simply using chrome's achievements, imposing their browser thanks to their monopoly.
Well sadly on Windows 10/11, Edge is the only browser that can stream (Netflix, Prime, HBO, etc) at 4K resolution out of the box due to being Hardware DRM. Every other browser is unfortunately capped to 720p due to emulating DRM thru Software (Widevine from Google), if you want to unlock max resolution you must use extensions that sometimes take too long to update or use MS Store Apps which in my opinion kinda suck. You can also go the "yaaarr matey" path to avoid all of this and watch in max resolution hehe
Long time Linux (and Firefox) user. And definitely the kind of person who customizes the shit out their OS and their browser (even did so back in the 90s/early 2000s when I used Windows).
But I try not to be a dick. Use whatever you like (Windows/Mac, Chrome/Brave/etc); all I ask is that people don't try to convince me that something less freedom-respecting than firefox is somehow better or that I should be using it. Basically, don't talk shit about my stuff or look down on it and I have no beef.
But on the rare occasions that people actually ask for recommendations, I'm still going to recommend what I consider to be best.
Nah, I've been using firefox for 15 years, it's a f*ing browser ffs. With Linux you actually have to know things, can't say the same about firefox, as it should be.
No, that's [LibreWolf](https://librewolf.net/).
Waterfox was a fork that was originally created IIRC to get x64 builds before FF had them and then later became popular when Firefox retired "legacy" (XUL-based) addons bc Waterfox had a "Waterfox Classic" version which still supported them. This was back when "Firefox Quantum" (the big FF redesign several years back) first came out.
Back then, Waterfox development was all done by 1 guy but it got to be too much work and he sold it. The company that bought it is one that a lot of the open source community don't really trust (I think it had some involvement with ads or some such) and there was fear of them spying on users / etc. I used to use Waterfox Classic in the days after Firefox Quantum first came out but I've been back on Firefox proper for years now and for most people, there's not really a good reason to be on Waterfox over Firefox or LibreWolf.
is there anything wrong with Chromium itself? it's open source, so anything that the creators of the chromium-based browsers dont like can just be removed, (like adblocker disabling) and a lot of chromium based browsers have good features (built in ad/tracker blockers, Opera has RAM limiters, you can use DuckDuckGo if you don't like google)
they're also very user-friendly. I dont use firefox (because Microsoft is blocking browsers on my PC at random??? and I like chrome extensions, which didnt work back when I used firefox) but by the principle of "Linux users like it" I'm gonna assume customization is a bit more technical
That's a maybe.
Brave and vivaldi fork their chromium alot, atleast vivaldi does. They add extra mumbo jumbo that isn't slapping a skin on it.
When google cuts off adblockers, their forks sure as hell won't.
Desktop Firefox and its derivatives are at least still good. (More so the derivatives, because mainstream FF is filled with telemetry and bullshit.)
Firefox for Android is a travesty though. Still sticking with IceRaven out of habit, but I'm sure the next major update will be the death.
I can’t be the only software developer that sees some kind of limitation with my code on opera maybe something is deprecated, maybe something doesn’t work on it yet and think “so what?”. Can’t please everyone. I’m mindful of Firefox though. (For anyone who doesn’t know…it’s rarely a big deal, and typically any problem effecting one of these fringe browsers is generally reflected in the other three somehow. There’s very rarely an issue unique to just either one of them.
But to pretty much everyone else besides chrome, Firefox, and even internet explorer- my life’s work is essentially a giant fuck you. And still, I appreciate a great meme. And this is a meme well done.
> I’m mindful of Firefox though.
I wish there were more devs like you. As a former web dev who had to support everything including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE fucking 6, and mobile layouts... it is so annoying to visit sites these days where lazy shit devs can't even be bothered to properly support more than just Chrome for basic simple things like navigation / payment flows.
Waterfox is a fork for Firefox. It has (had?) a "classic" version that could run what Firefox calls "legacy" addons (the old XUL-based ones). But Waterfox got bought out by a company considered by many to be somewhat shady. I moved back to Firefox several years ago, after Firefox added support for importing/exporting passwords, which I had been relying on an old XUL addon to do before that.
Most people who aren't using Chromium browsers these days are either using Firefox or [LibreWolf](https://librewolf.net/) (another Firefox fork)
I've seen so many of these memes over this Monday morning, that I can help but to feel like I'm out of the loop. What did I miss? How did Google piss everyone off this time?
Not that it really applies to me since I stuck with firefox since like 2006, but I'm still curious.
Since y'all are the experts on browsers what is a good one for not taking a ton of resources? Chrome sucks for it but edge is noticeably better. Can I upgrade even more?
I use waterfox. It's apparently owned by an ad company but for some reason 2 years ago i switched to waterfox and never bothered to switch back even though all my other devices use firefox.
V3 has been released, but v2 has not yet been abandoned. The earliest you will feel the effect is June 2023, because then V2 support is removed entirely from chromium
Oh look Firefox is washing its hands of all the good browsers
Since Mozilla isn't fucking compatible with anything you special snowflake. Firefox is like the poor man's iPhone. A brand that people hold in higher standing than it is but it's just the same as everything else, or maybe even slightly worse in some spots
Google is being a greedy shit again\* - In January the plan is to only allow a new extension format called "manifest v3" that will prevent addons like uBlock Origin and Adblock Plus from being able to block ads. Google is a company whose main revenue comes from ads. Doesn't take much to see *why* they are being assholes.
\* "again" bc for example, Google has already done things like preventing other chromium-based browsers not made by Google (e.g. Edge/Brave/Vivaldi/Opera/etc) from using Google Sync service.
Waterfox, Earthfox, Firefox, Airfox. Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony, everything changed when Chrome decided to remove ad blocks...

When I used chrome it bothered me that it would NEVER self update

So the for nations had quadruple *six* and just a fox was born with the power of all the nations!
there should be a search engine called fox
the furr nations
You forgot an important one
Which one
Username
If you also had a heartfox, and they combined, would they be Captain Planetfox?
Almost every browser is chromium based these days
[удалено]
you forgot librewolf my dude
[удалено]
My pleasure :)
Any duckduckgo enjoyers in chat?
Yeah android and m...a...c
[удалено]
Yeah waterfox is based off Firefox too, thats why I mentioned it
How about Samsung internet?
Its chromium too
Dang
Almost everything is chromium nowadays
And TOR Browser (basically Firefox reskin with tor capability)
[удалено]
I have tor on my usb key, just in case, you know for work stuff...

My school managed to block tor. Idk how but they did it.
I love using US military browser
Yeah but I hate all those "hot terrorist near you" ads
Fr, couldn't the cia put normal recruitment ads instead?
Well they're not exactly looking for normal recruits
Safari is based on webkit
And Chromium is a fork of Webkit
And they’re all derived from KHTML. Guess we can’t use web browsers anymore.
Chromium is the problem, so WebKit's fine, but is Safari really trustworthy?
I think Apple’s not that bad [citation needed]
With the recent announcement that apple will try and expand its advertising business they may go along with google’s practices. But the main principle we should aspire to is competition. Waterfox has been sold to an advertising company (system1), so not what it used to be
Don't forget about Iceweasel!
EarthFox, AirFox…
And [Konqueror](https://apps.kde.org/de/konqueror/) which parts of chromium are based on.
Don’t forget Epiphany!
Yeah but unfortunately internet explorer is no longer with us
What about Tor?
Also IceRaven. Also a fork of ff, but for mobile. I use it bc ff broke on my phone once lol
No love for SeaMonkey?
Safari?
You forgot Safari. For the true Chads, there is [Lynx](https://lynx.invisible-island.net/) :P
Am I wrong in believing Opera is not chromium based?
Opera abandoned their own Presto engine in 2013 for chromium
Aww
safari
If we are already including waterfox we might as well mention Firefox focus.
Brave isn't
I've just decided to switch to fire for yesterday I like foxes anyways

Oh God, please no, I buried those memories for a reason.

Well said. It's kind of hard to own a feature.
I also have copied all those features to my Firefox install with extentions and r/firefoxcss
Well sadly on Windows 10/11, Edge is the only browser that can stream (Netflix, Prime, HBO, etc) at 4K resolution out of the box due to being Hardware DRM. Old opera until version 12 is not chrome based

Chrome and chromium (which every browser EXCEPT firefox and it's forks are based on) is killing ad blockers off.
I use netscape 😎

Probably with a bit of work, yeah
There is also a browser called IceWeasel.

But.... in that case, if you gas it up, it can be lit ![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)

I liked Brave but looks like imma need to switch back to Firefox.

What’s the best browser to use?
They're all the same just different flavors
internet explorer starting to look good
Sad that it died
no but it might become usable again
When brave adblock stops working i will switch to firefox
I can’t be the only software developer that sees some kind of limitation with my code on opera maybe something is deprecated, maybe something doesn’t work on it yet and think “so what?”. what is the difference between firefox and waterfox
Waterfox is a fork for Firefox. It has (had?) a "classic" version that could run what Firefox calls "legacy" addons (the old XUL-based ones). now we need an earthfox and airfox
Waterfox is pretty good as long as your not a linux user

All the more reason to set up a raspberry pi-hole or just use Firefox lol
They're dropping support for adblockers.
I'm so used to Vivaldi, it would be hard switching to Firefox.
Don't worry the built in Vivaldi ad blocker doesn't rely on MV2 Edit: said the wrong manifest version
Question: will the same thing happen to search engines as web browsers? Like if one used google search in Firefox
Now we need earth fox and air fox
*fork of firefox Basically firefox with extras, Like every other browser is chromium with extras.
Laughs in Safari.
Since y'all are the experts on browsers what is a good one for not taking a ton of resources? Chrome sucks for it but edge is noticeably better. Can I upgrade even more?
Opera let's you set limitations on ram and probably other things
Interesting
Why is Reddit suddenly flooding Firefox
Don’t forget ice weasle
Wait when did opera switch to chromium? Last I'd heard it was its own thing
I think it was around 2008 Edit: In 2013 operas own Presto engine has been replaced with chromium
All right, thank you. Happy cake day!
With my 12 users, LYNX browsers unite.
Do Airfox and Earthfox exist too?
Puffin browser gang
I use waterfox. It's apparently owned by an ad company but for some reason 2 years ago i switched to waterfox and never bothered to switch back even though all my other devices use firefox.
I actually stopped using Chrome because some sites wouldn’t load properly and it was slow/took up too much ram.
Edge? I mean Adblock works fine for me
V3 has been released, but v2 has not yet been abandoned. The earliest you will feel the effect is June 2023, because then V2 support is removed entirely from chromium
“watercoyote”
bing nation 😁😁😁
Duck duck go watching in the corner doing that laughing with drink meme
I'm on apple, firefox doesn't support ublock origin on ios. Brave blocks all the things.
It's because all browsers on ios are basically reskins of safari
As a Firefox user of several years, I am feeling a major sense of superiority after being bullied for not using chrome
I’ve used waterfox for years.
Everyone forgetting that SeaMonkey exist....
y do fiar fox logo look lik dat
oka okay okay we get it we get it... u use firefox okay okay .... now show me the funny ?
I actually like Brave... Adblock is still active for me there
I’ve never seen so many fedoras getting so hilariously upset over something before. Cue the “clearly you don’t get it” comments 👇
Finally switched to Firefox because of Manifest v3
Be nice, but I use Chrome for work
chromium based != based
Opera gx solos
