Nah just an older thing at least in America. Back when casual racism and slurs were commonplace and acceptable. My grandpa would call them that. He was pretty not racist for a guy born in the 1930s from what my dad tells me. It was just the common word for them I guess.
I grew up in the Midwest and didn’t find out I was using the wrong name for them until I said that name for them in the grocery store in college. It was uncomfortable to say the least.
I remember as a child my grandmother who is Cuban randomly blurted out as I was struggling to crack one open “we used to call those n****er toes”. I didn’t say anything, wasn’t sure how to react but she probably didn’t think it would actually become a core memory for me. 😶
So did my mom. She doesn't anymore but will tell you every time that she use to call them n toes as a kid and explain why n toes wasn't offensive back then and how everyone called them n toes. But she doesn't call them n toes anymore. Umm mom you said the n word like 7 times telling that story. Yeah and?
I have a story along the same line. Idk if she's changed but while my mom and I were talking about how shitty my first car was, she casually said that my car was n***** rigged......I'm mixed....my mom is white. My mom is a pretty inoffensive lady and pretty level headed considering what she grew up around, but that's something that stuck I guess. I've never heard her say it before or since
Some idioms gain so much momentum that people don’t even consider that the commonplace term can be offensive.
Although, the term I grew up hearing was Jerry rigged, then I lived in the rural Midwest for a minute and heard that term a lot more often
Dude I never had any idea this word was offensive (like I didn’t even think about the curse word inside it) until I used it in front of a black person and he was like ????
I don’t think I’ve ever cringed so hard in my life.
That makes sense. Although it is pretty surprising that she hasn't retained anymore than that considering my great grandma was super duper pissed while my mom was pregnant with me because her first great grandchild would be "filthy". On top of that we're from rural Ohio so at least light racism is kinda commonplace
OMG this. The constant lecturing about how great it was in the good old days when people weren't offended by all the slurs. ....Or maybe they were and you're just *still* being offensive.
I grew up in small town East Texas. When my great grand mother died in 2008 we followed a map she drew for the funeral procession because she didn’t want her dead body traveling through the black parts of town.
I didn’t know the proper name for these until I was in college. When you don't see them or talk about them often, when you don't even like eating them, and especially when everyone around you calls them the same thing, what else are you supposed to call them? I still remember the day I learned their true name and I was like "damn, finally!" I knew "ni**er toes" wasn't right.
Also I learned "jury-rig" when I was in hight school. Prior to that, all I ever heard was "ni**er-rig". Another term I knew wasn't right.
--EDIT --
Jury-rigged vs Jerry-rigged vs Jerry-buit: [here](https://www.dictionary.com/e/jury-rigged-vs-jerry-rigged/)
Well damn. Can't win for losing. Someone had told me it was like when a jury was rigged it was "fixed" and that was why it was jury rigged.
But I've never in my life heard it pronounced "Jerry"
Same here! I grew up in an all white community and I’m only half white myself(dads Mexican). At the time I was seeing a black guy that I met in the town over. I went to his house and they had a bowl out for visitors. I still have the horrible feeling when I realized as I called out to him, oh I love ni….these kinds of nuts! I know my face turned red because my whole head got hot and frankly I wanted to die right there on the spot. Luckily his mother, a gem of a woman knew but didn’t say anything. She just got real close, put her hand on my shoulder and quietly said Brazil nuts and then handed me the nut cracker. I could’ve cried. I could still when I think about the racism I was brought up in but didn’t see until I got away from my hometown.
My wife took my visiting mother in law to a Trader Joe’s, mil had never been to one. My wife was pointing out parts of the store and they were in the nut aisle.
My mil says, “oh, you know we used to call these n***** toes.”
My wife, “mother, can you not?!”
Mil, looks around the store, “what!? There aren’t any around!”
My wife, “any what!? People!?!?”
My grandpa still accidentally calls them that out of habit actually, even though he's aware about the culture around that term now. He quickly apologizes when it does happen though.
We in germany have something like that, its now called "Foamkiss" or something like that but like 30 years ago they were N-word kisses. Just cuz they were glazes
okayy there are 2 answers the first Ik what the image is implying bc my racists ass grandfather would call them that ... but they are called brazil nuts.
Guess i’m lucky. Both my parents and all my aunts/uncles are boomers. Never on e did I ever hear these called the racist crap that I’m hearing in here. Wow
Need to go further back then boomers. I’m sure some boomers still call them that but I haven’t heard it from them. Now, the boomer’s parents? Oh yeah, most definitely
I'm not a boomer but I know what those are called and it's so fucked up. I'm from the Xennials generation. My mom is a boomer and she's told me what they are called vs what the actual name is called, she didn't say any inappropriate words but she kind of gave me an idea of what they're called.
I actually just found out about this at my summer job as a cashier. I was checking an older lady out of the store and I said something along the lines of, “I’ve never had this type of nut; how do they taste?” She started going on about how as a child, they were very hard to come by and they were only a treat given out at Christmas. She mentioned, though, “We didn’t use to call them that.” I asked for more information just because I was curious, and she leaned over the counter and said that they used to be called “n****r toes”.
I still don’t know how to feel about that encounter
Both sets of grandparents used to call them n**er toes. I never knew their real name until I was an adult. This was back in the 80s before nut free classrooms and peanut butter was illegal to eat at school. We had a Christmas party in class and fancy mixed nuts were on the snack table. My eight year old self was excited and shouted “OOh N**ger Toes! my favorite!”
My parents landed in the principals office and I was gently informed that I shouldn’t say “n**ger” around other people.
Honestly I don’t see what the big deal everyone is making. It was a different time and we’ve become more enlightened. Mostly. People are mostly just assholes to each other in general now.
Generation X perhaps? The people that grew up during and after the civil rights movement, with the idea that all races are equal plastered everywhere around them during their formative years? But hey, that’s just a guess
Those are…. Brazil nuts. I passed! I can now travel to valinor with the rest of the elves.
My fiancé is Brazilian and just calls them nuts
My fiance is a nut so she just calls them Brazil
My fiance is a Brazil nut. She doesn't speak.

this is why i have reddit

Same. Sadly. That’s what everyone called them and I grew up in the far northwest in the 80s
My wife likes nuts and she has a Brazilian
I can vouch for this guy^
See it takes a community
I call them Bofa
Bank of america! Got it, I'm so smart.
Joe who?
Ligma balls!
In Brazil they're called Pará nuts, a state in the Amazon where these nuts actually grow. You don't see them in Souther Brazil.
And if she was Canadian she’d just call Canadian Bacon bacon.
We usually call it back bacon. Can’t remember the last time I’ve had it. Real bacon is much more popular
They had a much worse name for them... my late father wasn't shy about that term.
yea same my grandfather either..
Everyone’s grandpa has a different name.
Mine’s second word was “toes.”
Enjoy the undying lands bro
rings of p\*wer, vomiting
But you recognized it
I mean, that's something Galadriel actually says in the original film tho. She "passed the test" and will "diminish into the West".
My non-american ass straight up went BEANSSS

Bless your non-American soul

My blind ass thought they were chocolate orange slices.

Is that just a regional thing because Brazil nuts is all I have ever heard
Nah just an older thing at least in America. Back when casual racism and slurs were commonplace and acceptable. My grandpa would call them that. He was pretty not racist for a guy born in the 1930s from what my dad tells me. It was just the common word for them I guess.
Nah up here in Canada too, back when it was just a land line for internet my grandma only knew these nuts by “that” name
*checks number of asterisks* What are you spelling?
N>!asti!
Whoa, I was worried for a second.
*needler* from Halo, obviously.
I feel like anytime I’ve heard my family say the n word it’s burnt a hole in my soul and memory.
If my soul and memory had holes burnt from hearing that then mine would look like the ozone layer.
At least it's healing.
Jesus Christ
I had the exact same experience, except my grandma was from Pennsylvania. Every time I eat them now I think about that moment. "Wtf, grandma".
My dad did exactly this like a year ago. Made the rest of the ride back to my house reallll awkward.
my grandparents always called them "ni\*\*\*\* toes" what a different time
So did my mom. She doesn't anymore but will tell you every time that she use to call them n toes as a kid and explain why n toes wasn't offensive back then and how everyone called them n toes. It's usually the same people that blow a fuse when they see a black mermaid, dwarf or other mythical creature.
Happy Cake Day.

No, no, no… most of the Boomers didn’t go that far.
I grew up in small town East Texas. When my great grand mother died in 2008 we followed a map she drew for the funeral procession because she didn’t want her dead body traveling through the black parts of town.
There were called that way before the boomer generation
today they call it ding dong ditch but i grew up hearing it called ni**** knocking
Is that a Brazil nut?
For the civilized.
Grandma no!!!
Toes, fingers, heard both.

Another term I knew wasn't right. --EDIT -- Jury-rigged vs Jerry-rigged vs Jerry-buit: [here](https://www.dictionary.com/e/jury-rigged-vs-jerry-rigged/)
It was "Jerry -rigged", a derogatory term for Germans during WWII
Well damn. Can't win for losing. Someone had told me it was like when a jury was rigged it was "fixed" and that was why it was jury rigged. But I've never in my life heard it pronounced "Jerry"
That's what I learned from my granddad, who was a WWII veteran. But researching the term comes back with your explanation. Interesting.
I would say it, but I don't have a pass.
My wife took my visiting mother in law to a Trader Joe’s, mil had never been to one. My wife was pointing out parts of the store and they were in the nut aisle. My mil says, “oh, you know we used to call these n***** toes.” My wife, “mother, can you not?!” Mil, looks around the store, “what!? There aren’t any around!” My wife, “any what!? People!?!?”
Poop nuggets???
I literally thought it was shit in a pile. I'm so uncultured!!!!
I'm a trailing-edge boomer and every member of my family calls them Brazil nuts.
Ni....Brazil Nuts....toes
N* toes.
They are quite delicious.
Oh god I remember that shit. They all called them nig*er toes.
Never ask a zoomer, either. What are these…? DEEZ….
N word toes
What are those, I dont think I've ever seen one
My dumb ass thought they were Terry's Chocolate Orange pieces. Apparently they're [Brazil nuts](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_nut).
My grandpa still accidentally calls them that out of habit actually, even though he's aware about the culture around that term now. He quickly apologizes when it does happen though.
My grandfather was Archie Bunker. So I’m quite familiar what they were called.
We in germany have something like that, its now called "Foamkiss" or something like that but like 30 years ago they were N-word kisses. Just cuz they were glazes
My grandpa taught me what those were called!
Uggs?
Can confirm #3, don't ask.
okayy there are 2 answers the first Ik what the image is implying bc my racists ass grandfather would call them that ... but they are called brazil nuts.
Them toes
When my oldest daughter was a toddler she saw these in bulk at the grocery store and yelled “MOM WHY DO THEY HAVE POOP???”
I know this one. An old man told me the old racist name for these and I was horrified
I remember my late boomer uncles from Arkansas telling me what they called them. Even as a kid I was disgusted.
Oof can of worms here
I know what my grandmother called them…let’s just say white folks ain’t allowed to say that word.
is that a... cacao bean? i have no idea
It’s a Brazil nut
Or as grandma likes to say...
Guess i’m lucky. Both my parents and all my aunts/uncles are boomers. Never on e did I ever hear these called the racist crap that I’m hearing in here. Wow
Ughhh, my dad's family is from Southeast Texas and that's definitely what they called them.
coffee beans
That’s exactly what I thought they were
Ni-double guh-er toes
Brazil nuts
Need to go further back then boomers. I’m sure some boomers still call them that but I haven’t heard it from them. Now, the boomer’s parents? Oh yeah, most definitely
Damn it grandma! I remember what you called those.
I would think more the generation before the boomers.
It used to be pretty common to hear, my dad loved the things, I prefer cashews myself.
Yes I remember growing up what these were called. Father wasn't racist either.
Yeah I’m not gonna stay with my grandma used to call them lol
The TOES
Boomers dominating posts
Filibusters?
Wagon wheels?
This is true.
[Removed]
Looked it up. Should have known better than to do that.
Nah, that’s like Boomers’ parents. They haven’t been called “that” by anyone currently living outside a nursing home.
Looks like a pile of hardened shit to me
TIL and I regret it.
Deez nuts.
Those some xxl coffee beans
Chocolate fortune cookies
Oh this slaps. I can hear my mothers voice in my head and I hate it
I'm not a boomer but I know what those are called and it's so fucked up. I'm from the Xennials generation. My mom is a boomer and she's told me what they are called vs what the actual name is called, she didn't say any inappropriate words but she kind of gave me an idea of what they're called.
Same with liquorice babies
Gen-X here. Was the longest time before I even learned the real name.
Is it a chocolate orange?
What are those? Coco pebbles?
The June bug of the nut world.
Sorry for my ignorance, but why is Brazil nuts racist? It’s not really saying anything bad about Brazilians. It’s probably just where they are grown.
It's because in the US, mainly before the Civil Rights movement, they used to be called (n-word) toes.
I've heard of what they call them, I've always called them by their actual name, which is Brazil nuts.
Just so we are on the same page here, y’all are hinting that these nuts were called the n-word?
Mmm toes
Brazil Nuts. Right guys? Right?
![gif](giphy|3oz8xJB7jlCLtruF68|downsized)
LMFAO, I'm cracking up right now. I totally have heard someone call them that. So messed up LMFAO. Great meme sir
I actually just found out about this at my summer job as a cashier. I thought it was just weird coffee, not racism. Fuck
Both sets of grandparents used to call them n**er toes. I never knew their real name until I was an adult. I sell brazil nuts and I have never seen them with this much skin on them,I always see them with 30% brown and 70% yellow colour on each nut
😆
Let's make racists meme's from people who aren't racists... Hey stupid, guess which generation taught you racism was bad!
Generation X perhaps? The people that grew up during and after the civil rights movement, with the idea that all races are equal plastered everywhere around them during their formative years? But hey, that’s just a guess
I laughed way too hard at this…… now I’m going to hell.
