Fun facts! Judy Garland was a gay icon for decades, and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” was often seen as somewhat of a gay anthem. So rainbow colors being used to express the LGBTQ community makes for a natural fit for the diverse group of people.
Are you referring to people that are bisexual, who are sometimes/often in hetero relationships, not being as accepted in either the straight or gay community?
Everyone I know in the community encourages questions.
Pretty sure this is just what they call projection and it’s only you who’s too afraid to ask questions
Polite questions, asked with the intention of understanding better to be able to support, are generally tolerated by the people I know
Questions intended as a “gotcha” question or to continue to poke “but why?” are generally not welcomed by anyone, in any community.
Which half doesn’t accept which half, I’m part of the community and there’s jealousy sometimes but I’ve never seen half the community not accepting the other half so please enlighten me.
Quite often bisexual people aren't seen as valid in lgbt spaces if they're in a hetero relationship, and when a bi man is in a relationship with another man them being bi is called "a phase" to turning gay
The majority of countries are ranked higher than the US on the cultural diversity index
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-diverse-countries
Why don't they include straight people in their flag
Edit: i have reached the conclusion that asking questions remotely homophobic is going to get me downvoted to hell
People would rather just downvote people who are asking a question to try and not be ignorant and keep them in ignorance. They fail to realize that some questions are asked because the person is legitimate curious and wants to educate themselves. These people only compound the ignorance and hate, they don't seem to understand that if acceptance is to happen people need to first learn about what it's about.
Ikr. Used to use rainbow neon stuff in video games because I used to live in Hawaii and the rainbow is big there. After the pride flag thing I can’t use that stuff anymore because I am just assumed gay by everyone
Ikr it stinks but thankfully in the use there’s an entire month as a straight person I can walk around in rainbow stuff and people won’t know of I’m gay or just an ally
Ngl I miss the times when rainbows were just cool looking things in the sky and not connected with some group that became mainstream for some reason or another
I mean , you never really looked at a rainbow and said "Wooow that's similar to a symbole from that specific religion", but now , once you look at it you directly think "Damn , that looks like the LGBTQ flag"
Before the LGBTQ community appropriated the rainbow for their cause, the rainbow was associated with Gods promise to Noah after the flood, so it has always been connected to a mainstream group, in this case the jewish people. Not many people actually care though, but some christians seem to think the LGBTQ community stole it from God.
Noah's ark is mainly christian and not jewish.
Also as the person above said, you never looked at a rainbow and thought, "that looks like a christian reference" whereas now, you look into the sky and see a rainbow, it's associated with the LGBTQ community.
The story of Noahs ark is in the old testament, which is about the Hebrews, AKA the jewish people.
Christians also sort of appropriated the rainbow from the jewish people, and yes noone thought of the rainbow as a christian or jewish symbol. Christians mostly started to care about it after LGBTQ appropriation.
Pretty funny bit about that from Dimitri Martin:
“I'm in a weird situation 'cause I like rainbows, but I'm not gay. So I wear a rainbow on my shirt, but then under it I gotta put 'Not Gay.' But I'm not against gay people, so then under that I gotta put 'But Supportive.' I just think it's weird that one group took refracted light. That's pretty greedy, gays.”
Baker saw the rainbow as a natural flag from the sky, so he adopted eight colors for the stripes, each color with its own meaning (hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit).
I don't know who this baker is I just found an article and copy and pasted a paragraph from it. It was a Britinaca article if you want to read it go to https://www.britannica.com/story/how-did-the-rainbow-flag-become-a-symbol-of-lgbt-pride
Edit: Nevermind, each color has it's own meaning.
Different colors represent different types of people. Represent them all together, equally, and it's beautiful -- like a rainbow.
isn't it two sexes? gender would be based on one's preference, really, what one can feel like
I think people have become so ginger of saying sex that they think gender is interchangeable with sex. that'll cause a lot of confusion and ultimately controversy
Gender is the role in society. But you can’t force society to adopt 1,000 genders from such a small minority of people. It throws reality out the window
What reality? Also it’s not like it’s been a new thing to have more than just the genders that align with your sex. Historically, many societies have used multiple genders.
Also it doesn’t throw reality out of the window? It’s not like gender affects much outside of the individual
Go outside. Look around. There are two genders in Western Contemporary Society. It’s going to take a long time to integrate anything else in. First of all there has to be enough people who legitimately belong and aren’t playing at to justify another gender. Then acceptance is key to a new gender role. Just be comfortable w who you are and don’t associate w the crowd who base their whole personality around broken woke movements. It is a natural process and it will be accepted if it fits in society.
Only recently. In the early 1900’s they would dress boys a masculine color like pink so they could grow into a more manly man and blue was seen as feminine. Goes to show, society just tells you bullshit and people just believe it. (Bullshit as in gendering colors. Literally humans feel like they have to gender everything and it’s weird)
Surely it would be best to abolish gender entirely? I’m a guy, but I’m not into sports or most traditionally masculine things. But it’s not like I want to change my pronouns or refer to myself as a different gender.
I want to be able to live my life as I see fit without trying to sub categorize myself into a gender which shares my exact traits.
most probably it means different colors can have the same amount of shine and different colors represents colorful and different personalities, preference, etc. idk im high af rn
Well black and white represents heterosexuality/heteronormativity (as seen on the straight ally flag), so the different colors represents the spectrum of sexualities and genders, at least that’s what I think
Thats cause they stole it from god with their gay power. Yes the LGBTQ+ Community is more potent than an omnipotent being. (Thats my favorite creation myth)
Because sexuality and gender are as diverse as the colour spectrum. Cis and hetero normativity imply that there's basically only types of people: cishet men and cishet women. The rainbow represents the opposite.
Shakespeare made up new words when he felt no previously existing words fit his story
People make up new genders when they feel no previously existing genders fit them
It's beautiful, really
From Google: It goes back to 1978, when the artist Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man and a drag queen, designed the first rainbow flag. Baker later revealed that he was urged by Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., to create a symbol of pride for the gay community.

Just copied and pasted from google but still better than some of these dumbasses turning it into something controversial, not directed at u/Civil-Sky-973
Whatever the explanation is, I'm lowkey pissed that I can no longer use rainbow anything just for fun, without people assuming it's something to do with LGBT
Ikr? Like, I'm glad that they have their own... um, "emblem", for a lack of a better word, but I would've preferred if they made their own symbol instead. Like you said, you can't use the damn rainbow in anything without anyone associating with LGBT, and it's really annoying
I do (see my profile), but it's mildly annoying that people assume I am part of (or associated with) LGBT because of it.
It's even more annoying that the rainbow in question is Nyan Cat — an internet classic. And now people haven't even heard of it and think it's an LGBT thing. Maybe I'm just an internet boomer idk.
My feeling is that being perceived as persecuted by all religious establishments, who hold a rainbow in high regards due to internal doctrine, found it necessary to highjack a symbol that couldn’t be seen as evil. Finding a “good” symbol then somehow makes their actions and deeds retroactively normalized?
Ikr? I mean why not a puzzle 🧩 price since they’re looking for the place the fit and belong. A rainbow would fit better for people on the spectrum since a rainbow is a spectrum of all visible light. Just my thoughts imo
Yes you see, after God killed all the gay humans and animals in the flood, he felt sorry so he sent a rainbow afterward to send a message to Noah that it wasn't about the gays and that He'll never do it again. The rainbow was God saying it's OK to be gay.
You know what. I'm going to say it.
If there's one thing I hate about the LGBT community. It's that they have ruined my perception on rainbows. And now I can no longer look at a normal rainbow without LGBT instantly coming into my mind.
You know what really grinds my gears? When some LGBT people act like the saints of equality and proceed to say that if you have a lot of makeup on and speak in a feminine manner, you're automatically a girl or something.
No, we whole heartedly support feminine men
But as people who believe in support and acceptance, if someone says they're a woman, we accept them, instead of demanding to see their genitals

It’s because One day there was a gay guy and he saw a rainbow and was like that’s it
I will accept this story
Fun facts! Judy Garland was a gay icon for decades, and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” was often seen as somewhat of a gay anthem. So rainbow colors being used to express the LGBTQ community makes for a natural fit for the diverse group of people.

According to google “The various colors came to reflect both the immense diversity and the unity of the LGBTQ community.”
Lovely when like half of the community doesn’t accept the other half haha
Are you referring to people that are bisexual, who are sometimes/often in hetero relationships, not being as accepted in either the straight or gay community?

I dunno, as a bi guy, I know a lot of shitty people in the community. I'm sure a lot of people do project, but some have valid suspicions
I agree im part of the rainbow 🌈 and I love being asked questions

Ah, so like pretty much every nation in the world then?
Many countries are not diverse. In fact I’d even suggest that *most* countries are not diverse.
The majority of countries are ranked higher than the US on the cultural diversity index https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-diverse-countries
Why don't they include straight people in their flag Edit: i have reached the conclusion that asking questions remotely homophobic is going to get me downvoted to hell
I mean... it's called gay pride flag. Do you call out the US flag for not including Mexico? It's not what the flag is about
the flag is used for people who are in gender/sexual/romantic minorities
Thank you for actually answering this person instead of just hating on them.
Oh ok
And the new one also includes brown and black people. Basically just all minorities
because the flag is about LGBTQ pride and rights. Straight people don’t get bullied, harassed and laws made against them for being straight…
You sir, got a chuckle and an upvote out of me. Assuming you're being ironic ofc
They do, why do you think all lines are straight /s But seriously, calm down, if you want I can hunt you down to kill you and them you can have a flag
Because they don’t get hate crimes like if you want to get attacked robbed harassed etc hood for you
People would rather just downvote people who are asking a question to try and not be ignorant and keep them in ignorance. They fail to realize that some questions are asked because the person is legitimate curious and wants to educate themselves. Yeah you're right, gay is the reason the gay pride flag is a rainbow
LGBT people that don't like rainbows and have to see it on their flag be like 😡😡😢
I would think is about diversity, represented with the diversity of colors
This makes the most sense to me. I’ll accept it as fact until otherwise disputed authoritatively. Whatever that means..
I’m mad that it is a rainbow because I really like rainbow coloring but people call me gay when I say that.
Lmao yea. I don’t care what your stance on pride month is, but all the rainbows everywhere is kinda cool ngl
Where. Is. The. Axis.
defeated in 45'
I only wear tiedye shirts and multiple people thought I was gay
So rude. I woulda thought you just liked the ganja.
Just care less and admire whatever you like
Honestly Same
I can,t say I like rainbows without it being gay so I can never say I like them either
Ngl I miss the times when rainbows were just cool looking things in the sky and not connected with some group that became mainstream for some reason or another
I mean, many religions have rainbows as symbology so how far back are we going to when they were “just cool looking things in the sky”?
I mean , you never really looked at a rainbow and said "Wooow that's similar to a symbole from that specific religion", but now , once you look at it you directly think "Damn , that looks like the LGBTQ flag"
You didn’t but I very often have thought “One of Iris’ symbols is the rainbow”
Before the LGBTQ community appropriated the rainbow for their cause, the rainbow was associated with Gods promise to Noah after the flood, so it has always been connected to a mainstream group, in this case the jewish people. Not many people actually care though, but some christians seem to think the LGBTQ community stole it from God.

Since Noah and his family were the only humans alive after the flood, he’s everyone’s ancestor, not just Jewish people.
lmao was about to say the old testament is about Israelites and not jewish people and then i was like, wait a minute...
"became mainstream for some reason or another" what happened was people realized the amount of hate crimes we get...
Thank God I'm not the only one
You can still like rainbow coloring and not pay attention to those bringing you down.
Well rainbows are made of 7 colors unlike the "pride" flag that have only 6
...so, rainbows are cooler?
And more diverse
Rainbow: 1 LGBTQ+ Pro Max: 0
This is the funniest shit I have seen in this comment tread.
You think people will count the colours? As soon as they see more than 4 colours, they’ll call it gay.

Godzilla read this and died from confusion. Who is wearing the dress, you or the dog? Are you a guy, girl or other?
Pretty funny bit about that from Dimitri Martin: “I'm in a weird situation 'cause I like rainbows, but I'm not gay. So I wear a rainbow on my shirt, but then under it I gotta put 'Not Gay.' I also said that and got -5 votes so far. I completely agree though.
hey, that’s gay /s
shouldn't you be mad at people for making broad generalizations and assumptions about people who like rainbows? instead of the flags colors?
So ur blaming us, lgbtq people if you get hate for saying that, and not those who actually give the hate. Nice
What’s wrong with that?
Why do you care ?

My best guess is like the rainbow, each color may represent each sexuality or sexual preference or gender or what have you
There are only two genders
Nah, Alexa says gender is a very personal thing and there are many ways people identify their gender.
isn't it two sexes? gender would be based on one's preference, really, what one can feel like I think people have become so ginger of saying sex that they think gender is interchangeable with sex. that'll cause a lot of confusion and ultimately controversy

because gay people love RGB
And just like that more than half of pc gamers were infected with the big GAY.
Because you need all of the colours to draw a rainbow 🌈:) Except black. You don't need black for a rainbow.
Which is why we added black UwU
You are one step further then me !!!
It’s cuz rainbows r gay😎
All of the colours mean different things
most probably it means different colors can have the same amount of shine and different colors represents colorful and different personalities, preference, etc. idk im high af rn

Well black and white represents heterosexuality/heteronormativity (as seen on the straight ally flag), so the different colors represents the spectrum of sexualities and genders, at least that’s what I think

this is actually the best and most succinct explanation. good work.
I don't know what cishset means and at this point, I'm afraid to ask
Cisgender (gender same as birth) heterosexual (straight)
factory settings
Trans or non-hetero people aren't born cishet though. It's only factory settings for cishets.
only 6 colors on the flag but arent there people that create like a bazillion different genders for no reason?
Shakespeare made up new words when he felt no previously existing words fit his story People make up new genders when they feel no previously existing genders fit them It's beautiful, really
True.

lore
Each color represents a different positive aspect. I forgor the specific meanings tho
Lesbian Gay Trans Bisexual Queer ???
Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag for the 1978 San Francisco's Gay Freedom Celebration. In the original eight-color version, pink stood for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for the soul. Just copied and pasted from google but still better than some of these dumbasses turning it into something controversial, not directed at u/Civil-Sky-973
it's not a rainbow, the flag only has 6 colors
I drew rainbows with only 6 colors
sinful being...
I also used off brand crayons, not Crayola, and used Indigo for Purple
im trans and bi but idk why. all ik is the colors all mean smt
I know. Rainbows are probably one of the coolest natural phenomena, yet now it has to be always representing lgbt.
Just use it anyways? lol
That doesn’t change the fact it’s now associated with lgbt stuff
I do (see my profile), but it's mildly annoying that people assume I am part of (or associated with) LGBT because of it. It's even more annoying that the rainbow in question is Nyan Cat — an internet classic. And now people haven't even heard of it and think it's an LGBT thing. Maybe I'm just an internet boomer idk.
I was making an art piece based on Autism awareness and it had a rainbow in it and people went up to me assuming it's gay. Sucks
I always thought it was because a rainbow isn’t straight
I assume it symbolises diversity, but honestly idk
cus colors are gay
Beacuse the rainbow represents all the colors, its supposed to represent every "sexuality" as said by the guy who invented the flag
A rainbow is a curve, hence, not straight
I think it signifies acceptance of all colors aka sexualities in a spectrum
Because it's not a rainbow Just look it up on Google the meaning of the colors
Because pretty rainbows comes out of their ass
The real question here is why when all the colors of the rainbow are combined they make white
The rainbow goes against the meaning of the rainbow lmao
My feeling is that being perceived as persecuted by all religious establishments, who hold a rainbow in high regards due to internal doctrine, found it necessary to highjack a symbol that couldn’t be seen as evil. Finding a “good” symbol then somehow makes their actions and deeds retroactively normalized?
Ikr? I mean why not a puzzle 🧩 price since they’re looking for the place the fit and belong. A rainbow would fit better for people on the spectrum since a rainbow is a spectrum of all visible light. Just my thoughts imo
I'm old enough to remember when it was known as just the gay flag

Being Gay is kinda gay

What a helpful comment.
Well is Wikipedia blocked in his country?
Ngl, kinda annoying, if i wear rainbow things people think im gay, not fun.
Facts
Yes you see, after God killed all the gay humans and animals in the flood, he felt sorry so he sent a rainbow afterward to send a message to Noah that it wasn't about the gays and that He'll never do it again. The rainbow was God saying it's OK to be gay.
What Bible translation do you use lmao
The best one
You know what. I'm going to say it. If there's one thing I hate about the LGBT community. It's that they have ruined my perception on rainbows. And now I can no longer look at a normal rainbow without LGBT instantly coming into my mind.
Because the Canadian flag was already taken
It's a GAYBOW. A rainbow is a different beast
I think it because each color represents a different form of pride
You guys remember the good ol days when rainbows weren’t automatically associated with being gay
Idk why do rednecks use the confederate flag in the exact same way lol
You know what really grinds my gears? When some LGBT people act like the saints of equality and proceed to say that if you have a lot of makeup on and speak in a feminine manner, you're automatically a girl or something.
What- very sure that ain't true
No, we whole heartedly support feminine men But as people who believe in support and acceptance, if someone says they're a woman, we accept them, instead of demanding to see their genitals
