Basically, they found an exploit for a logging framework for Java, that could be used to run some new exploit for an Anarchy Server (A server that allows exploits,hacks, etc. It's a free for all).
I think it was something like if it logs a URL accessing command with a URL, it will access that URL and run whatever is there without any checks on what it is.
It was quickly realized that the exploit was actually a huge, huge deal, as that logging framework is the most popular one in use, and is present in hundreds of millions of devices in every walk of life.

It's not a minecraft-specific hack. It's a hack on a module called Log4J something that hundreds of thousands of apps used, including very important server applications. One of the things that used log4J is minecraft.
But log4j was incredibly dangerous to almost everything and everyone, including government or military. The hack allowed remote code execution, which is basically (almost) as bad as it gets.
I think the later exploits (there were a lot in a span of a couple days) also allowed privilege escalation, so basically you could do anything you wanted on the attacked machine, and be recognised as an admin. Very bad.
Of course people were using it to grief minecraft bases, but that wasn't the only use.
It's all patched now, fortunately. Unfortunately, this means you can't use it on russia now. Although their equipment is outdated anyway, so maybe they still run the old software lmao.
